On The Libyan Oil Tank "Time Bomb"

Tyler Durden's picture

Three weeks ago we first mused about the irrational endgame of it all when we asked: "When Hussein left Kuwait he set the oil wells on fire. Will Ghaddafi?" It now appears that this could well be the endgame, after Al Jazeera reports that "desperate Gaddafi might hit oil facilities in an attempt to fend off encroaching rebels, sparking a human catastrophe." And obviously in order to prevent this, the US will be "forced" to institute a no fly zone, thereby commencing a full blown invasion of the country, and eventually destabilizing the region completely.

From Al Jazeera:

The oil producing town of Ras Lanuf in Libya has seen some of the worst fighting in the last few days.

Home to a huge facility at the very heart of Libya’s massive oil and gas industry, the plant could become a new target.

For now, opposition forces control this and virtually every other natural energy facility in the country.

But as this conflict wears on, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi will need oil. He will have to try and take it by force or, as many fear, he could bomb oil and gas complexes to prevent anyone else from using them

“ We expect that he will destroy everything because he is crazy," Fahad Kheri, superintendent in Libya's oil and gas Industry, told Al Jazeera.

The installation is only a few hundred kilometres away from Gadaffi’s hometown and stronghold of Sirte.

Al Jazeera has found that the frontlines are fluid and that the rebel fighters lack organisation. As a result, the natural gas plant here is a potential time bomb waiting to go off.

For now Libyan capacity is off line temporarily. But if Gaddafi makes sure that this becomes a semi permanent feature, then kiss double digit WTI prices goodbye (and Europe can look forward to $10/gallon gas within a month).

God Damn it!! Why can't everyone just get along?

Don't count on O to do anything but run his teleprompter--he is still voting "present."

Why should Obama do anything?   What can he (WE) do anyway?

Exactly how many billions of dollars, that we don't have, are we willing to spend?   How many American lives is this worth?

I vote $0 and 0 lives.  Stay out of it and praise Obama for having more sense than his predecessor.

What is this mighty star, guiding the evil eye of Sauron called, Ori? You sound very Gandalfian to me!

Oh regional Indian's picture

Perhaps falak. That star is the HydroCa, about to go Super Nova on us.

falak pema's picture

Well as long as it's not our Sun, which does not have the Chandrasekhar mass to go supernova, we still have hope. Take care Gandalf, as Khadaffi is saying on TV at this moment that this star is the rising star of arab freedom threatened by western forces linked to Al-Qaida. Sauron is showing the world his oil ring knowing it mesmerises them. I hope you have your magic staff ready to neutralize this hanky-panky.

Oh regional Indian's picture

:-) The universe never gives you problem without the tools to take care of it (Paraphrasing Richard Bach).

I would be far more interested in what happens 3/11 in K.S.A.!

Those would be uprisings!

Robslob's picture

"Whatcha talking about Landrew"... 3/11 is when the new iPad comes out in the K.S.A.

Oops...wait...I think I meant to say U.S.A.

Meme Iamfurst's picture

KSA ? oh, I get it.

3/11 is not like Christmas, it may have an 'official date', but the effects have already affected people or what you see would not have such unifying power on the diverse minds of all involved.

Should DC be concerned, who knows?  But don't you find it interesting the we now have a new call to arms in the last few days over  that boogie man in the closet next door, USA citizen be damned.

All you ZH folks who don't know what "C" Street is, need to do homework.  More than your pocketbook is involved.

Saxxon's picture

Like most pre-set dates of great augur and anticipation, that one turn out to be a non-event.

Have NO doubts about it! It is the evil Khazar tribe that is behind it all! The Tribe of Satan has LOTS of payback coming!

add this to the soup:

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Moammar Gadhafi said in an interview broadcast Wednesday that Libyans would fight back if Western nations impose a no-fly zone to prevent the regime from using its air force to bomb government opponents staging a rebellion.

and what you have is a classic recipe for a complete clusterfuck.

falak pema's picture

If Q blows oil dumps he will make Russia and Venezuela and Iran very happy. They'll all be running to the bank like the Canacks.  Quack quacking gold backs, not green backs!! 'Cos that's Uncle Sam's toasted roast when oil hits the post of 200/bbl.

scatterbrains's picture

Who's to say we aren't secretly backing Daffy?

Maybe that British commando unit was meant to disorient the rebels by feeding them false intelligence and send them into the jaws of death.

Should we be asking ourselves what would the Saudi King want and then maybe assume we are doing his bidding ?

Perhaps all of this official concern for the civilians is just theater.

EscapeKey's picture

Oh, we absolutely are. We constantly sell weapons to whoever is on the losing side - government forces AND the rebels.

Once all their energy has been tapped, we'll roll our tanks in and secure strategic sites (ie, oil infrastructure).

Classic divide and conquer.

falak pema's picture

You sound like you are pounding a key of Appassionata. Like playing ringa-ringa-roses, pocket full of posies; going round the globe selling lovely passion flowers of venomous malice. By the way, repeat performance of Appassionata having been played in Baghdad/Afghanistan, now scheduled for Libya-Iran-KSA et al. will be very costly; especially with a green back that looks, feels, like toilet paper. Being distributed by young US soldiers on food-stamp rations.Tall order for ongoing NWO. When you have a new generation of barbarians with nothing to lose on their backs except their bare bones. From Pakistan to Mauritania...What was that Marines song we heard the other day...? Play it again Sam!

Confused's picture

The concern for the civilians might just be that. As TPTB always seem to pick and choose when and where to get involved. Their illusion of morals is never applied consistently. There may be a motive other than oil. Who knows. But it would be safe to assume they don't care about the people.

alien-IQ's picture

if the US really gives a shit about what happens to the people...then why did they demand immunity from prosecution for the mercenaries in Libya?

for the answer to that (and many more revealing insights regarding our intentions) you may want to inquire as to just whom is paying for these mercenaries.

According to the Mail, the SAS were captured with the following equipment:

1. Guns and ammunition. (Check)

2. Maps (Check)

3. Fake passports (What?)

4. Explosives (What?)

There's no way this was a "diplomatic mission", when a British destroyer is moored 15 minutes stroll away from the Rebel HQ in Benghazi. Things just get weirder and weirder every time there's a conflict.

aerojet's picture

Obviously not, and nobody said it was.  The "diplomat" was MI6, and the mission was a classic special forces operation--help stand up the rebellion.

BigJim's picture

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Our governments are only 'worried' about civilian deaths when it benefits them to worry.

It's tempting to wonder whether the SAS team were sent in to kill the rebel leaders, rather than help them.

Saxxon's picture

All concern for civilians, expressed officially by our Magisters, is theatre.  They just want the oil train to stay on track.

youngman's picture

These "leaders" all think they are Gods for some reason.....steal billions..and when they find out no one likes them....they want to steal the ball and destroy the playing field...what a bunch of babies actually....Libya is going down along with the other Muslim countries....the radicals want to go back to the 7th century way of life...they really do....and they will kill you to do it...so they will fight themselves for a long time..and no westerners will want to be their because we like our heads attached to our bodies...prepare for very expensive gas.....

Meme Iamfurst's picture

I assure you that the Muslims around this world know who and what "C" Street is and has done.

The plans of the righteous are unraveling and the gold goal maybe be lost to that arrogance.  Not so easy to repeat Indonesia these days is it?

The behind the scenes story here is all about who's God is best.  Their God, your God, or the no god of communists...the work is never done.

Meme Iamfurst's picture

We bombed his home when we 'thought' he did the Lockerbe Plane, now we know HE did it.

I am the last person to say go in, but this time we have good reason.  And the people have ASKED for our help this time.

No we will wait until half the rebel forces have been murdered before we do something ( haven't gotten all those commission and royality contracts in place yet).

cossack55's picture

Wow. Good Plan.  Why don't we just kill everyone and be done with it. What a NeoCon moron.

alien-IQ's picture

"but this time we have good reason. And the people have ASKED for our help this time."

Isn't it a tad early in the day to be tripping on acid?

Pants McPants's picture

Actually you're not the last person to say "we" should go in.  I for one think the US government should stay out of the conflict altogether.

And I'm sure there are plenty of other people on this site who feel the same way.

YOU, on the other hand, are free to sign up or volunteer to fight.  No one is stopping you.  Become a mercenary already...and stop signing other people's death warrants.

You do not have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in
foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like.  However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.

BigJim's picture

We will wait until most of the rebels are killed, because then it will be much easier to roll in and make the oil, oops, sorry, Libya, safe for democracy, as most of the people with sufficient balls to object will have been killed already.

youngman's picture

For the US to enforce a no fly zone...and don´t be fooled...... the US is still the only country that can enforce a no fly zone...Obama will have to order it...put his name on the line....he won´t do that..he will want the UN to order it..and they never will ......period

Lol, WB7 hilarious! The summum of US, WH, diplomacy in action!

i was trying to post a couple pictures i took along the highway of death in 1991

dont know why they wont post

but for you folks calling for us to go to war again, until you've seen the bodies, smelled the burning flesh, or had someone die beneath your hands while you desperately tried to give first aid to an E-6 missing a quater of his skull, i'd kindly like to ask you to:

SHUT the FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EscapeKey's picture

Calm the *beep* down, alright? I doubt there's many who wants to see war, but realise it will happen regardless of what we think. Call it geopolitical awareness.
