London Rioters Attack Ritz Hotel, Fail To Dent Reinforced Glass

Tyler Durden's picture

Just your typical London protest. The Telegraph has recorded the attempted break and entry into a bank, which however proves too much for scattered "anarchists" courtesy of reinforced glass. The same can not be said for the Ritz hotel unfortunately.

And the latest timeline from The Telegraph:

19.15 Scotland Yard says: "Although the TUC march has passed
peacefully there remain pockets of disruption by breakaway groups in the
West End."

19.00 A Large bonfire lit by protesters in the eastern end of Jermyn
Street appears to be getting out of control, says reporter David Barrett,
with buildings now looking at risk.

18.55 Projectiles known as "Thunderflashes" - fireworks
containing coins - are understood to have been thrown at police in
Piccadilly Circus. Some riot police appear to be removing reflective bibs,
to reduce the risk of being set alight.

18.30 Amid clashes between police and protestors, a police
officer appears badly hurt, reports Michael Howie from Piccadilly. Half a
dozen police medics treat him before he is dispatched to an ambulance,
wearing a neck brace.

Meanwhile, protesters are being allowed out of the kettle, but those who do
not want to move on are involved in clashes near Piccadilly Circus.

Opinion
17:59 Daniel Hannan, Telegraph blogger and MEP, questions the
negativity of the protest, in the post: 'March
for the Alternative'? WHAT alternative?

17.35 Lloyds TSB bank on Piccadilly is under attack from protesters, at
least one large plate glass window has been smashed, with banner poles now
being used as weapons, while red paint bombs have been thrown. Nearby a
protester is being treated for a head wound by police medics.

Quote
17.30 Reporter Michael Howie is among a crowd of thousands of people
contained within the police kettle surrounding Fortnum & Mason. He sends
this report:

"Skirmishes have broken out as police block off the exits to
Piccadilly, with protesters charging either end. Shop windows have been
smashed as terrified demonstrators and shoppers got caught up in the
violence

One father sheltered her distraught little girl in a doorway as missiles
were flung at riot police who hit back, striking some with their shield.

Peter and Elizabeth Davies, both 73, from Guernsey, were desperate to
escape the clashes.

'I came here to see my mother in a nursing home and we just wanted to find
a nice place to eat," said Mr Davies, taking refuge with his wife in a
close.

'It's terrifying,' said Mrs Davies. 'I've never seen anything like it
before.'"

Protesters
attack Topshop in Oxford Street

Quote
17.10 In Oxford Circus, many shops are now closed, though shoppers
continue to stroll among activists, with the main troublemakers dressed in
black, says reporter Ben Leach:

"Many of the shops around Oxford Circus are now closed as hundreds of
activists continue to protest outside Topshop. Dozens of police officers are
lining the entrance and seven riot vans are parked nearby.

Banners reading 'Keep warm, burn out the rich' are draped from traffic
lights, and flags depicting Che Guevara are being carried by the remaining
hardcore of protesters.

Shoppers continue to stroll through the area, which is filled mainly with
activists, most of whom seem to be either teenagers or in their twenties or
early thirties. The main trouble makers are dressed head to toe in black,
some wearing face masks, scarves to cover their faces and helmets."

Funny you should put it that way, it's exactly how it struck me.  It looked like a scrimmage rather than a scored match, however, with a lotta boys out there surfing the waves for their first time--many men acting like they'd just gotten up on the board against those radiating waves of social interaction.  That's no small thing . . . I saw a whole lot of energy and crowd awareness getting its bearings there. It looked like talent--I saw some athletes out there.

I think they're gonna be a lot more organized, especially in smaller bands of sypaticos, next go round.

Lord have mercy...what is Britain coming to...from the playing fields of Eton...to anarchist mayhem... Is this the England that was? Or is this the England that will be? Time for the people to ask themselves...how are we different from those who suffer...in Tahrir square..or in Bahrein?....That question WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE ASKED...AS LONG AS BRITANNIA RULED THE WAVES...The very fact that we ask this question...means something has changed in the fabric of Britain...oh my, cricket will never be the same again...But who won that boat race?...Lets go back to basics...

At least they are protesting. Here in America the biggest protest you get is a bunch of fat old white people in 1700's clothes screaming about the government taking away their medicare. Also anyone else find it interesting how some commenters say every protest is filled with "agent provacteurs" or "george soros funded it", like protesting is some new thing that is only happening because some socialist oligarch is paying them. Learn your history, protests have been going of for centuries, and they happen when the common man is pissed off at the robber class(usually happens to be politicians, bankers, and coporate execs)

Why does a blog like Zero Hedge quote a newspaper like the British Telegraph, or use quotes form the Telegraph to update and inform, overseas readers ( non UK) on the event in the UK. ?

the Telegraph is a very right wing and anti Union newspaper with a bias and agenda of it's own, is it the intent here to promote theTelegraph and it's editorial policy and political agenda ?

You know why peaceful protests to get something resolved do not work anymore? Because the elite bankers, politicians, and other crooks just laugh in people's faces. Even as the crowd is amassed, the crooks are still doing business as usual. When the crowed disperses, they ante up even more.

Nothing is going to change anywhere in the world, until the people start removing these crooks from their sense of security. Physically!!!!! Tired of being taken to the cleaners by Wall Street bankers, then tear down Wall St. and all the banks there.  Physically remove these people, don't expect your Congress to do it for you, because they are part of what needs to be removed also.

We would all love for peaceful protests to work, and many years ago they did, but times have changed and call for harsher measures, because the crooks fail to release their hold on the little guy.

The last time there was a protest this large in London was when people marched in opposition to the Iraq war:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/2765041.stm

I marched in my own country with a few hundred thousand others but it had zero effect. I do mark that moment as when I became more interested in finance than politics. Around that time I realized that democracy was bought and paid for.

You make a good point.  Black is trite, plus it connotes the tired, unavailing and useless era of beatniks and hipsters -- followers of Sartre.  It's an anachronism.  Justifiable anger lashing out at the plutocracy that has its greedy hands clenched around the throat of what once was a thriving middle class, choking it off from existence needs no uniform.

I am not pro-union - at ALL, and I originally hail from Michigan, seeing the peak of union power in the U.S. at its high water mark in the 80s and early 90s.

However, all of us, IMO, would be far better of to agree that when comparing and contrasting the inefficiencies and problems posed by either the financial 'sector' or the unions, that the problems, crises and theft caused by financial sector actors have caused roughly 20x the capital losses that unions ever have.

Before anyone accuses me of errant math, let me proffer forth just one example:

The 2008 financial crisis, which I argue was not only brought about by the inner sanctum amongst many of the large banks, brokerage houses, mortgage lenders, bond brokers, ratings agencies, and others on Wall Street, but was exploited (with those plans in laid in advance - just look at Goldman Sachs and John Paulson and their Abacus scam) for additional gain by the very same bad actors that created the crisis.

Approximations of taxpayer born and general economic losses (shifted to the taxpayers by Bernankincide & Co.) range from 12 trillion to 20 trillion, before all wil be said and done, from the 2008 financial crisis, and there's the real possibility that we'll see a large aftershock if not new earthquake soon, as a result of it (as the economy remains vulnerable and banks remain undercapitalized and stressed).

In the game of 'lets implode the nation,' unions, as much as dislike the way they distort wage and price equilibrium, have NOTHING on the financial sector, which is far and away the biggest parasite of American (and global) financial resources.

And remember, parasites keep taking and taking until their host becomes seriously ill or dies.

Ah yes, the tantrums of the ignorant. Glorious, no?

IMHO greed comes in two forms:

1. When any affluent person uses any and all manner of unscrupulous means to secure a higher and higher profit for themselves.

2. When a person of little means has been dependent on entitlements for so long that they have absolutely no appreciation for the source of the largesse. In the absence of public shame for continuously relying on these government hand-outs to survive, they become violent when anything threatens their freebies.

Actually the Venetians did...when they raped Constantinople for the price of paying the Crusaders a trip to that city. Best fractional reserve deal ever made. The ratio of debt incurred with the crusaders subsequently was 100/1 to their initial investment amount, thanks to their ill gotten gains at the behest of the greeks, the true mother of all TARP/QE deals to this day. The Venetian Mark/ducat reigned supreme for two and a half centuries over the Mediterranean until Constantinople fell to the Turks.

While USA has a tea party alternative, europe riots to suck on the government teat of more debt.

That is why europe is screwed, as much as its demographics.

Hate to tell you, our US is now a case of people living in glass houses where the entire economy feeds at the teat. That's what happens sooner or later after 4 decades of spending more than you take in. THe twin deficits just run on forever, even though somebody proved that deficits don't matter.

Without the teat the stock market would be in the crapper, 3/4 of Wall Street firms would have folded and half the S&P 500 companies would have folded, unable to roll their massive operating debt into frozen capital markets.

Riots = more police overtime and bigger budgets.

Great. (sarcasm)

i know the uk reasonably well and most of the 'anarchists' are toffee nosed 'right on' rich kid students who love the worker now and go off and join goldman sachs after their degree.

You can look it up - Charley Gilmour, son of pink floyd twat and Otis ferry son of bryan ferry have been arrested at these events.  Scum , not because they riot but because they are phoney.

India Inc leaders learn tricks about doing biz from Buffett

NEW DELHI: Select leaders of corporate India kept their date with an unusual visitor on Thursday- a sagely American who created unimaginable wealth and gave it all away, and is now travelling the world to promote a culture of giving.

Leading CEOs, technocrats, venture capitalistsand others who made it to a carefully curated list of invitees, met 80-year-old Warren Buffett through the day in multiple sessions, listening, talking about doing business in India, and learning first hand why the world hangs on to everything this man has to say.

See? It doesn't matter if you strike, riot, or destoy. Others will find new employment opportunities somewhere else on this globe.

Personally I have no sympathy for these "activists" and "anarchists" they are just narcissistic truants who live off their parents money and the taxes of those few Europeans who still actually do any work, money that is left after paying for the welfare of muslim immigrants the EU is shipping in by the plane load every day. And as for those few who do still work, like at our architectural design office in Spain, here is just one example of why we have pulled out and are pulling everything out of euro zone. Important client with potential large contract wishes to see the offices at 10 a.m. but that is the first official coffee break time. We first ask the staff to take the break a little later so the client can see how busy and successful they are, NO! Then we offer to pay them, NO! The client comes and sees an empty office and is unsure about us as a result. Unbelievable. Now, these are white collar workers with advanced degrees so you can imagine what it must be like for companies in manufacturing, etc. Here in Asia we sometimes have to order our staff to take a break or go home they are so competitive. So let the Europeans have their coffee breaks and riots. They are a dead culture, in ten or 20 years it will be Arab suzerainty anyway. They can enjoy a few more years of techno and drugs before their lights go out. Nobody needs them anymore, anyway. We have Asia and South America still has many many good years ahead of it. Oh, and please spare me the “bankers stole out country” excuse. These people allowed this financial crisis to happen to them by letting the euro union get formed and take control of their lives and sovereignty, they are not victims.
