I can answer that question. The reason you don't want to take down things in cyberspace is becuase if you show that there is a backdoor in hardware or software by say... uploading a virus to shut down the Siemens centerfuges in Iran (which worked by the way, Stuxnet) You shortly have people picking out the weakness and using it (ie sony beingnattacked.) This is all theory of course. I for one think that Stuxnet had revealed a govt backdoor in hardware, and I think this new wave of vulnerabilities is what happens whe you teach other people what it is. No facts, just suspicions.
The main reason I have for this suspicion is that I am seeing software take out hardware. That is VERY hard to do, only a few ways it can KIND of work as I understand it. Sony didn't just go down... they had to rebuild the servers. The first time I saw that in the world was stuxnet in Iran.
Stuxnet code was recovered and re-engineered and is available on the black market.
What Ying-Yang says following me is correct, of course, as there were shortly over 100,000 copies around once they released it.
That Stuxnet code is truly beautiful with 10 really nifty phases (I coded something similar to just one of those phase back in the '80s, so I have an idea as to its wonderful complexity).
But most importantly, it is far easier to code something to take down a clearinghouse or exchange, than a uranium enrichment centrifuge involving four different corporate tech specs.
