Mark and Erin on together were definitley one of the best parts of CNBC.
I liked his direct questions and cutting through the BS when some senior fund manager or politican was on talking nonsense.
He called the top in 2000 and the 'Haines Bottom' in 2009 too so he had a good feel for markets.
RIP and best wishes to his family.
Erin is a moron.
You, at a minimum, are a sociopath.
sadness
Sad. I was interviewed by Mark many years ago before he joined NBC on an international trade issue , and remember him as very jovial off camera which made you relax and enjoy being with him.
Mark had a finely tuned Bullshit Detector--Vaya con Dios!
he didn't have a scooby about gold... and the whole 'live from the financial capital of the universe' was a ballache... i didn't think he was all that bright and i find it hard to respect anyone with a comb over
probably a heart attack. Maybe the fat purple dinosaur is next.
That interview was fake as hell.
I remember first watching Mark back in the days of FNN.
You could tell right away that he was a good one
That video is amazing. Barney Frank, the one who advocated limits on cash compensation to executives, and forced companies to go with stock options and other compensation packages is SHOCKED, SHOCKED, that this led to them taking risky strategies on behalf of the company to boost share price.
We are led by idiots.
Very sad. Will miss him. God's blessings on the family.
You were a great guy Mark. My thoughts are with your family.
Mark was the only reason to have CNBC on the tele, well, that and Mandy's amazing rack.
The world needs more common sense types like Mark. Seems he had a pretty awesome life, good for him.
My condolences to his family. Mark will be missed.
Interesting as they recount stories talk about CEO calling to complain about M/H. Gives you a little insight into the media process. Little like the meeting over in Europe yesterday to manage the internet better
Mark was the only anchor I could stand to watch. He will be missed. RIP
RIP
I used to watch Haines when he anchored the morning slot with Kernen and Keetenia and he kept things on the straight and narrow, but when they moved him to mid-morning and further humiliated him by giving him Erin as a co-host I turned off CNBC for good.
I cannot believe the number here on Zero Hedge that watch CNBC, very disappointing.
Some of us watch CNBC for its entertainment value.
some of us don't even own a tv
beats fox biz net.
Did not like him. Will not miss him.
Consider this my dance on his grave.
For the moralists who feel they have something meaningful to share with me because of that, fuck you in advance.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Here's to pissing on your grave in advance. Cheers!
Catch only just discovered ZH last month.... nuff said!
You'll see me in hell Mr Thorne
Why wait?
you are a douche, wish catch edge ghost would have replaced him...the world would have been better off
RIP Mark Haines.
Total, total class guy.
Wow, I never thought I would say I would miss anyone from CNBC,
But Mr Haines, I will miss your hard hitting questions.
Didn't really care for the guy, but still, 65 is young. May he rest in peace. Just found out that Joe Battipaglia died just a month ago. Joe was one of the uber-bulls during the dotcom era, but seemed to have down down to earth (no pun intended) recently.
Died April 14, at 55. Now, that's WAAAAAYYY too young. Heck, I've got two years on that.
Wow, no idea Joe B died. Thanks for the update. May Joe B. RIP.
Humbling, be prepared.
Affable, but like most Media people, had no clue of markets. No clue of the real issues. RIP.
Godspeed, and RIP.
RIP Mark. But he was all wrong in that vidcap. Pompous and interrupting. No respect for his guest. Good on Frank to walk out.
RIP Mark. I'll miss the M*A*S*H helmet during the next great crash.
I am stunned by this. I always liked Mark Haines. I remember him announcing that there was a report of an explosion in Oklahoma City, and providing the first coverage of that. CNBC had been squeezing him more and more out of the picture, and it seemed like he was going to be replaced by the whiny voiced twit, Simon. I only watched CNBC when he was on. I have no reason to now. RIP Mark.
so now cnbc are only going to talk about him all day? please. sad for his family, and yes, may he rest in peace, but quite frankly, does anyone else care. People die all the time. Did you know him, no, he was a talking head. Just proves how self indulgent the people on that channel are.
And the way you people are carrying on is hilarious. The other 364 days of the year you criticise them no end! Today you're all feeling teary eyed. Pathetic.
here, here........
hug off.
you people really can't take any criticism can you. Buy a mirror and take a good hard look at yourselves. Pathetic.
Haines had more skepticism than most of the talking necklines on financial TV.
When Barney Frank dies we will lose a much more dedicated fighter for the middle class though.
"talking necklines" good one. thanks for a little humor on an otherwise sad day.
Are you kidding me? Bawney Fwank is as guilty as the rest of them for the mess we are in. He is as useless as tits on a bore hog and needs to be put out to pasture.
Just saw Art Cashin talking about Mark passing at 65.
Art looks like the Reaper just visited him.
He's got this weird thousand yard stare now - sizing up his whole life and the time he has left.
Kind of looks like he just eff'ed the neighbor's cat or killed a French prostitute with his bare hands at his family's cabin by the lake.
Art. You are one of the good guys too.
If you exit soon, try to say something on behalf of the little guy who gave so much to let your industry do so well.
Well said. Mark and Art were the two best components of CNBC.
don't worry about art. he is a good catholic. if he misses the cut, he believes he will go to purgatory. now, i realize that purgatory is talked about in apocryphal books , books, that were not included in the Canon. so one might deduce that the story about purgatory is not true. but , to make sure catholics everywhere know for sure. i mean, purgatory is a real place, isn't it?????
It figures. The only non-bootlicker on the show.
Mark Haines was one of the few bright spots on CNBC which made it worth watching. He spoke elequently and was a straight shooter. Erin and Mark made a great team that was funny and smart. The rest of the CNBC team could learn a thing or two from this guy. RIP.
On a human note I will not miss him but agree that 65 is too young, surely there were people who knew and loved the guy so it is a shame for them. I am totally indifferent as to the network, I only tune in because they flash commodity prices and interest rates whereas you can die of old age waiting for the Bloomberg ticker to show them. CNBC has a political agenda that is far right of my tastes, and I have never watched an hour of their programming without hearing someone express in one way or the other "let them eat cake." MH was among the worst of these elites for that, the only personality on that network to express any concern for the average person is Santelli.
x
Funny I thought over the last 6 months or so they have taken a Left turn. That is the problem. They shouldn't lean one way or the other. They should just report and inform.
Mark was excellent to watch take apart liberal guests like Arianna Huffington, etc. RIP my friend. You will be missed
CNBC needs to get Dylan Ratigan back now....someone that can and will ask a tough, thoughtful question
Good call.
+100
Dylan Ratigan is totally in the tank for TPTB ! He had a thin veneer of an independent reporter ! As thin as the one day crust on a cow pie ! He would have made Barney Frank look good ! Monedas 2011
I liked Mark. This is way too soon. RIP, Mr. Haines.
A true class act. RIP Mr. Haines
RIP bro. There ain't a body at that clown college who can fill your shoes.
Very sad news. May he rest in peace.
RIP Mark Haines. In the midst of the meltdown in 2009 I remember him suggesting that it might be time to bury your money and coins in the yard. He was the only real guy on CNBC. He of course died before he could use any of his retirement assets. There is no justice.
Hope you made your friends laugh, and your family love you.
RIP
RIP Mark - my thoughts go out to his family.
RIP mark, he was one of the good guys.
I always looked forward to hearing him every morning.
So sad.
Agree or disagree with his style, Haynes was the real deal. I wish he could be alive to see the tribute and recognition he is getting. About one in ten of the abov commenters are sociopaths or worse. Must indicate the general composition of Wall Street in general. As for you sociopaths, even your families will likely say good riddance when you day comes...
So hold on a second, did you not think that Barney Frank not bring up a valid point regarding natural cozyness between the members of the boards of directors and the CEOs due to the process of direct appointment? I think it was a fairly good point, and one cannot simply say "well, there is a sufficiently smart proxy between the owner of the shares and the agent that does the purchase" as a justification for shareholder inactivity. Mr. Frank also brought up another point about the absurd nature of the view that execs have on the shareholders. Somehow, execs don't get that they are the employees of the shareholders.
Mr. Haines was fairly impolite here as to not let him speak.
We should be more concerned about the "natural coziness" of the politicians like Barney Frank with certain corporate execs, Country Wide, Wall Street, Pharmacuticals. It was Barney Frank that championed "everyone deserves to own a home no matter what" and yet when called on the carpet for it he changed his tune to saying he meant "decent rental homes" until CNBC pulled out Youtube of Frank in 2002 using the bully pulpit to pound the table on everyone being able to get a loan for housing regardless of their ability to pay the loan. So please your supporting the wrong guy in this instance. How much are you getting paid to be Barney Franks PR guy? Or are yo really Barney Frank and trying to state your own case. Plus Frank and his ilk should have a more cozy relationship with the truth and the people, not the rich fat cats that can raise the most money for their re election consequences be damned. To make him out as some beacon for the little guy is just being intellectually dishonest. Haines was treating him with as much respect as Frank deserved. Frank, as a SERVANT of the AMERICAN PEOPLE has a duty to listen and respond honestly. Not huff and puff and cowardly walk away from the hard questions nor with revisionist history that suits his needs.
+100
Barney (and Dodd) are about a guilty as they get in enabling this rip off of all rip offs. The "I am outraged" act is just to cover their own tracks, and I think Mark saw this and lacked any respect for Franks at all.
Frank's revisionist history does a wonderful job of whitewashing his significant other relationship with Herb Moses all through the Clinton Administration who was at the time developing the very Fannie Mae Affordable Housing Programs that exploded with the innovations in the CDS market a few years later.
"...did you not think that Barney Frank not bring up a valid point regarding natural cozyness between the members of the boards of directors and the CEOs due to the process of direct appointment?"
Yes, of course. But his solution is to insert a politician - through some type of regulatory agency - between the two. Now, an new regulatory and payola suckhole are added to the task of creating goods and services, ala Countrywide w/Dodd and Frank. What will that cost the economy vs. the benefits delivered to the economy? Will this be as efficient as the SEC catching Madoff?
Frank is simply attempting to insert a cash spigot into every public company; he is not Mother Theresa.
"well, there is a sufficiently smart proxy between the owner of the shares and the agent that does the purchase"
Obviously not in all cases, AND in the marketplace the rule is, always has been, and always will be: caveat emptor. What exactly is Frank - who had oversight on the housing sector of the economy - promising will be the benefits delivered to the economy if this oversight burden gets created: nothing concrete.
"Mr. Haines was fairly impolite here as to not let him speak."
My interpretation of that point in the interview was that Haines was making a point while building up to a question. Frank cut him off by telling Haines what his question was, and then proceeding to answer his own fabrication. Haines refused to be cut off, and insisted on pressing his point. Frank claimed he was interrupted during his answer, but Haines had never asked the question - Frank was insisting on answering his own fabrication.
So, Frank cut off Haines - who refused to become roadkill. The rudeness was Frank's alone.
Mark "Whiskey-Bacon-Marlboro Reds" Haines takes it to a whole new level....
...and calls in DEAD
Another one scratched off the death pool
Many more to go
65 and still working for "da man"
Pathetic
He always looked like he was chewing on something.
Is this bullish? Ahhh fuck it, never mind. Obviously it is. Look at the Dow soaring while the Dixie tumbles yet again. 76.27 down to 75.75 in a few hours.
Haines was just alright...Santelli is my favorite by far, Haines was too swept up by the whole 9/11 bullshit for my liking. I guess if you live close to ground zero it's hard not to get caught up in it but still he was over the top. Even called Osama a son of a bitch on the air a few weeks back when "we" caught him. Whatever.
@votewithabullet~People like you...trying awfully hard to be a badass (comment and handle). Funny thing is, it's people like you that end up being made into ass bitches first, so enjoy.
Well said.
I was about the fifth person to comment on the CNBC site, and made a nice comment about Mark. I didn't make glowing comments about Simon or other twits on their. Someone else even commented on my post with similar sentiment. My post was removed. RIP Mark Haines. CNBC no longer exists.
I'm so sad. I've been waking up to Mark for three years now. His wit, humor, and hard-hitting interviews made the show what it was. He'll be greatly missed. No one could fill his shoes. Rest in peace, my friend.
Rot in hell, you fat bastard. One less apologist for the Banker-Gangsters selling snake oil and bailouts for Immelt.
I’m going to take a stab at this and guess your life has not been a resounding success?
You're an ass with no class.
Bingo! Exactly.
Ahhhhhh, does someone need a hug?
Now that you got that out of your system you can go back to playing with yourself.
As much as that ending was awesome-- nothing is worth listening to the dribble drabble of that idiot Barney Frank.
RIP to one of few who seemed to still report.
Watched him for many years.
Problem is...he was part of the problem.
Part of the global elite...part of the game.
If he was that close to the power, he must accept responsibility.
He was just part of the advertorial.
very true...he pimped the same dribble they all preach on that channel, save santelli.
Smoking will catch you every time. Too bad. I always thought he had been drinking the way he stammered through some interviews. Funny, nice guy. Sorry for his family
Interesting example of Mark "telling it like it is"... imo he was on the wrong side of the debate on this one... but of course it'll play well with the homophobic ZH element (showing your stripes as usual Tyler... waiting for the come back that the "Diva" comment was based on the congressman's decision to push back for being repeatedly interrupted, and had nothing to do with his sexual preference).
Good to see the majority of comments were respectful (for a change)... r.i.p. Mark, you will be missed by many.
Seeing Erin Burnett's face when he talks was always priceless.
The thing I loved about Mark Haines is that he was never afraid to call bullshit on anybody, Democrat or Republican. He was a tremendous asset to CNBC and a friend to investors everywhere.
After working for five years with Erin Burnett, I know he was pretty broken up that she left CNBC. Watch their last show together and try not to get choked up.
I'm really sad that he's gone.
It is so sad. May his soul rest in peace. He looked to me like a father figure, taking care of those two chicks.
HOW did he die? Why doesn't anyone ask that question?
CCould he have been killed? Was he going to leak something?
No one had to ask Mark Haines if he wore "boxers or briefs" ! If they had....he would have had a great belly laugh ! He wouldn't have taken it with the phony, flattered modesty of Bill Clinton ! Monedas 2011 We all knew Mark had a pair ! RIP
Mark was the best. I am so very sad today. I think my fondest memory was when Erin told him that some lady from Belgium (or Denmark?) didn't like him calling NY the Financial Capital of the World. He sarcastically replied with, "Well what are they the capital of? Butter cookies?"
Or, when he referred to Chinese imports as "crap." Erin asked if he meant "goods," and he clarified, "No, I meant crap."
CNBC and my mornings will never be the same. Mark will be surely missed. RIP, my friend.
Ouch! My heart hurts and my eyes are salty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Gd5SXN-YDc&feature=related
Nice fellow, but haven't watched the station in about 8 years.
Just heard one of his quotes "Anything beats being a lawyer"
Mighty Mark. So many memories. His distinctive, resonant voice perked everyone up when he announced everyday "L-I-V-E from the heart of Wall Street...".
"building block"?
So what did he do to wake up the world like Bob chapman, Dr. Paul Graig Roberts, Peter Schiff and the like? Not to mention Zero Hedge.
In fact Peter Schiff was laughed at at CNBC so .... frankly I don't give damn!
He did have a quick wit..the remark on Danish butter cookies was great. I like those butter cookies.
Of all the people who pimp the system, Mark gave them a human face and a likeable personality ! His fatal mistake was dissing that cock sucker around town....Barney Frank ! I think the circumstances of his death should be thoroughly investigated ! At least he will join Sonny Bono in the long list of people who have fallen from the grace of TPTB ? Monedas 2011
