Matt Simmons Tells Bloomberg Only Way To Contain Oil Leak Is With Small Nuclear Bombs, "Top Kill" Is Just A Distraction
In his May 28th interview with Bloomberg's Mark Crumpton and Lori Rothman, Matt Simmons of energy investment bank Simmons & Company, provides some stunning revelations on what is really occurring in the Gulf of Mexico, and proposes that the only effective way to contain the leak is to relieve BP, bring in the military, and do what the Russians have done on comparable occasions, namely explode nuclear weapons within the wellbore. Simmons knows what he is talking about. As Jim Bianco points out: "Matt Simmons gained fame with his book 2005 Twilight in the Desert where he claimed that the Saudis were overstating their oil output because they hit “peak oil.” Right or wrong Simmons claimed the price of oil was going to skyrocket and three years after the book’s release the crude oil hit $147/Barrel. In January 2009 the WSJ called Simmons one of the five most important voices in the oil industry. Simmons has been wrong in the past and his views are non-conventional and often correct. Simmons is also highly connected within the oil industry so he knows who to talk to verify his claims." In addition to his radical solution, Simmons also points out that "Top Kill" is a sideshow and the real problem is 5 to 7 miles away, where a second fissure is "releasing a plume the size of Delaware and Maryland combined." If Simmons is indeed right, and the only recourse left to Obama is to nuke the seabed, the repercussions for his already shaky political situation will be tremendous.

That it was anything but, is an illusion we all need to shake off. Nice song.
Stuff the hole with Treasuries.
Go ahead and call me crazy, but a couple weeks after this occurred I stumbled across some 'conspiracy' website (I wish I could remember which one) but they were saying that it was NK that blew up the rig. But get this....they claimed that it was done because the only way it could be stopped was with a nuclear bomb! And it was done to discredit Obama during his Nuclear Proliferation get-together in DC a few weeks ago. They wanted to embarrass Obama so they could point at us and say "They use nukes, why can't we?" I dismissed this theory but after hearing this, I'm starting to wonder.....
I read somewhere that Obama was an alien and the oil spill was a precursor to large scale alien invasion.

Thank you fuu, that isn't the site I saw but it's similar. Thanks for the link!
No problem. I am pretty sure that was the original article.
almost one month back ...i read an article in rense.com ...by n experienced engineer.....he also stated there that NUKE is the only way out....
... The government failed to properly ensure that BP used adequate safety measures, BP and their contractors were criminally ... at any repairs at 5k feet is mind boggling. And Korea. And Korea............ If the diagram is correct then the BP ... piece of the puzzle that he ignores is the attack of that North Korean mini sub that really set it off. It should be noted ...

I don't see how any bomb, nuclear or otherwise, could withstand the pressure at 1 mile down. There are no submarines that can go to that depth and a special casing would have to be built for any bomb or it would be crushed long before it reached 5,000 feet.
That is not something you keep on the backshelf of a closet for a rainy day. It would take an engineering feat, and a damn quick one at that. Bathyscathes like the Trieste have gone much deeper, so the construction is technically feasible, but how long would it take?
First, you have to drill the hole (as the Russians did) at an angle and then build a bomb casing to withstand the pressure at that depth. Then the bomb has to be delivered to the new shaft 5,000 feet below the surface of the GOM, and then down the shaft to the right location. Then it has to be detonated. They are still working on relief wells and it will be August (I have read) before those are ready. How deep would they have to drill to place an A-Bomb?
Has this even been attempted before? Underground testing has certainly been done and shallow depth underwater explosions have also been done, but to my knowledge there is no device currently available that is capable of descending to that depth and then down a well hole to a precise depth and successfully detonated.
shill baby shill
For what it's worth here's a discussion:

This guys says that the reason that a nuke wouldn't work (nor a battleship for that matter) is that the sandy ground is too porous and that the pressure is much, much higher than expected. Even if the topkill worked, chances are it would start to force up thru the porous earth elsewhere nearby. There is another underwater plume 5 miles away.
They are either doing a poor job of communicating with us, or covering up something horrible. There are no other choices. Good communications would make it such that we (and Matt) would not be speculating so wildly.
Either there is no leadership, or the leadership is corrupt.
It may be the case that they have no fucking clue and don't know how to break that news to us.
It may well be that they are just trying to keep us from panicking and that it is, quite frankly, all over.
Panic? Now why in the world would anyone panic? What, me worry?

I am getting the distinct impression that it's a fake it 'til you make it scenario, except without the 'make it' part. Who is to know the oil won't sink into a canyon on the sea floor? Or be carrried out, diluted, via the various current streams? We might see a 'successful' stoppage of the leak, only to have a second, tailor-made disaster erase all of the hard-won gains a few days later.
But for now, the PTB have decided the population is on a need-to-know basis (to an even greater extent than usually), and that to me means bad, bad news indeed.
PS: While Alice was cute, good to see you back to your darker self (again)
Hey CD,
Towering inferno at least had a probable finish you could see in sight, eh? Overwhelming but not impossible. I agree with your take whole heartedly, Schrodinger's cat is both dead and alive until you open the box.
I whipped out Alice when I suggested I felt like Alice in Wonderland on this site, and Mr. Lennon Hendrix suggested a costume party and showed up as the Cheshire cat (it was an awesome avatar). I think this Fem Fatale is it for me, but that I reserve the right to change it up and come back from time to time. FWIW, posting as the innocent looking Alice was quite a dark thing to be doing. Alice said the naughtiest, darkest things. I was posting as Lloyd for a while and it was just good old funny to be posting the things I was saying next to that picture. I would read old posts, and crack up at the idea of Lloyd saying them. Alice had the same effect for a different reason.
I was an art nerd in highschool, early college, the kid that painted murals and drew all over everything. Can't help it that my brain does more with it than it should. Like seeing you around.

Sorry, haven't read all the comments, so someone else may have made this observation. In late April/early May, the Russians were the source of a theory/observation that the well was blown up by the N. Koreans. Why? Because the N. Koreans knew the only way to stop the leak was with a nuke. And the US using a nuke would change the playing field, so to speak, with regards to nuclear weapons. What this guy is proposing (nuke option) is not news. The Russians already suggested the nuclear option a month ago. (I'm sure BP is aware of the nuke option as well.) But, the Russians incorporated the nuclear option into a N. Korea sabotage angle. Is the N. Korean story true? If not, those Russians really know how to take advantage of a situation. The Russian story may explain dispatching Swat teams to the existing offshore platforms. The Russian story may explain the rush into gold earlier in the month of May.
"And the US using a nuke would change the playing field, so to speak, with regards to nuclear weapons."
Why? Russians have done it five times in the past. Countries who have nukes test them from time to time. This isn't much different.
This IS Obummer's Katrina
The Wall Street puppet, corporate "health" insurance welfare lovin', Amerikan public screwin', one term Carter... is goin' down like a biatch on this one....
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy... "Yes we can!"
Cant we just use Michael Moore as the junkshot.
An upside down funnel with a long hose to the surface wouldn't work? Ask all our OPEC friends to cut production for a while and divert their tankers to the GOM. Start filling them up.
Ocean Currents: working on anything 5,000 feet below the ocean surface is as close to impossible as it gets on the planet. If there is a second substantial fissure then job one should be confirming if that's true because it makes a difference on what you'll do at the BP site.
This will now slowly develop into an Atlantic Basin problem as the oil moves into the Gulf Stream and then works it's way up the east coast then across to the English Channel and down the coasts of Western Europe as it slowly bends back to the Caribbean. Are there any oceanographers among the ZH learned crew? Oil on the surface is know to "calm the seas" and that effects oxygen exchange - the oil sheen also warms the water below it so what are the consequences over the next year or two of this gigantic oil slick?

Engineering question?
If I was a piece of rebar say 5/8" dia what would be my needed weight to reach downward movement at the well head against the outflow of the oil now flowing? Is it 9" drill pipe size and ? 2300psi.
What super weight of 5/8" dia would achieve terminal +velocity in that medium? And last lets put a 60 degree point nose on it.
Okay, let's think the impossible. How about a world where governments are run for the people and not corporations/elite? How about the people rise up and lynch said leaders and elite?
On an unrelated note, I met Simmons' daughter in a Chelsea (London) bar about 8 years ago while she was studying in the UK for a year. A very friendly and totally stunning hot Texan babe.
What do you trade the dudes for?
Okay (chiming in here as an Engineer),
So we dig deeper than ever we have ever for oil in the nusery for cod, tuna, shrimp, dolphins, most of the fish we eat that take a cyclic route in the atlantic as a spawning ground.
We've poisoned it with oil in year we'll be drinking as CH4H20 back wash in our produce and drinking water. The entire world is pretending like there is a hollywood ending to this mess. Now nuking the situation, underwater, deeper than ANYONE has tested a nuke on an oil field comparible to Saudi containing not only oil, but methane, butane and all sort of fun shit like solid NG (that caused the problem inthe first place).
Here's the set up in natural terms. You decide to drill a hole in you propane tank and insert an ever widening straw below sealevel. To stop the leak you put paper mache in the tip a couple of times because you assume if you jam enough paper in the hole it will make it better. It blow the wad of gummed up paper out four times and fails publically. So some whack job says the best way to deal with the situation is to attach a grenade to the END of the straw and pull the pin.
So you've got this whack job and the people that don't know how big or where the propane tank lies, telling the public to pull the pin. The tank could be right underneath oreleans at it's farther point or it could be Jamacia or it could be Mexico.
If the pin is pulled, how fast does the war start in every Major American city? Last i looked lots of Mexican and Jamacian gangs in all cities in the US.
This is not just a US problem and people should STFU and understand this is in the range of moon landing without a rocket or a plan. Again, nobody has dug this deep in the past (versus the idea the russians did it...yeah on land, to cap a couple of siberian wells for practice to see if it could be done).
Cannot believe this asshole is getting airtime.
First of all it would be like shooting a nuke at jello.
Second the pipe would most likely fracture a mile down under the crust we drilled into for oil. Then we would have a bigger mess.
Third. They should be dragging in the other platforms (that are going to be doing nothing anyways) to drill and tap the existing line to subdue pressure. But they won't because why would you want to save the universe with the tool you need if it's pumping oil.
Goddamn it. This is getting really stupid. Now they are going to cut the top off pipe and "fit" it while the oil it coming out at 4000 psi. Total insanity. What has enough wieght to do that and again it's never been done.
People, guess what. We are the alpha test, not even the beta test at this time. We're hosed.
So as everyone sits around and blames the oil companies why don't we spend a minute on us - the true villains.
Yes sprts fans as you pound away on your iphones at starbucks just thank yourself for buying a plastic device made from gulf oil. Yes people, it is a marvel isn't it. As you blast away at the evil oilers you deflect the blame from where it belongs.
Laptops, blackberries, tv's, cars, blah, blah, blah guess what they are made of? Yes gulf of mexico crude baby.
On us. Enjoy
Have a great day. Watch that spewing video on your iphone why don't ya. I have taken it upon myslef and my family to dramticaly reduce plastic useage. I suggest you do the same.
Dude, the Star Wars is cracking me up. Thanks for the great post, these are my fav so far. xbox 360 slim
