McDonalds Hires 62,000, Turns Away Over 938,000 Applicants For Minimum Wage, Part-Time Jobs
This is what the US economy has been reduced to: McDonalds reports that as part of its employment event to hire 50,000 minimum wage, part-time (mostly) workers, subsequently raised to 62,000 it received a whopping 1 million applications, or a Tim Geithner jealousy inducing 6.2% hit rate (h/t X. Kurt. OSis). Alas, the US economy is now so pathetic that the bulk of the population will settle for anything. Literally anything. And the saddest part: over 938,000 applicants were turned away. Here's hoping to Burger King needs a few million janitors in the immediate future too. And yes, aside from reality, things in America are really recovering quite nicely.

McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.
The April 19 national hiring day was the company’s first, said Danya Proud, a McDonald’s spokeswoman. She declined to disclose how many of the jobs were full- versus part-time. McDonald’s employed 400,000 workers worldwide at company-owned stores at the end of 2010, according to a company filing.
Earlier this month, McDonald’s said sales at stores open at least 13 months climbed 2.9 percent in the U.S. after it attracted more diners with items such as beverages and the Chipotle BBQ Bacon Angus burger. The fast-food chain has about 14,000 stores in the U.S. and more than 18,000 abroad. About 80 percent of all McDonald’s stores are franchised.

Offset it with lower overall rates if you want, but a tax code stuffed with tax breaks as thick as five phone books doesn't add up to "less goverment".

On one of the daily talk radio shows a representative of Centra ( Irish equivalent of 7 eleven ) was talking about the launch of a new store in Dublin city centre . He went on to tell how they had recieved hundreds ( possibly thousands ) of applications for this one ( relatively small ) shop , from the likes of lawyers , accountants and college graduates . They were queuing up ( quite literally ) for interviews outside for a minimum wage job . That's the sort of environment we're dealing with .

I think someone already mentioned it.. but it's probably the result of cutting full time spots and putting in more part timers. A savings move on whatever benefits costs are due to full time employees. So those lucky new employees are probably going to get like 15 to 25 hrs per week - sans benefits.

My looking-for-her-first-job teenage daughter applied at two different locations, and has heard nothing from either. While she was saddened at first, I'm thinking she will get a bit of solace being 1 of 938,000 rejectees. Now she's thinking about being a cookie-baking entrepreneur.
Entry-level jobs working for the city here have been getting 200-300 applicants each (low pay, but nearly fire-proof (you have a legal property right to your job once off of probation) with bennies).
I think I feel worst for the teenagers just trying to get their first simple job.
Just read an anecdote from a law-school grad who was deferred by his hiring firm for 18 months, so his firm hooked him up to work for non-profit for free. So his classmates who wanted to use their law degrees for community work now can't get those jobs, etc. down the line.
My first job, at age 15, was as a part-time dishwasher. Good luck to any teen who tries to get that job now; the Mexican adults seem to have kitchen work monopolized.
Things are starting to get scarey. I suppose when politicians and IRS agents are shot in the street, I will be asking myself "What country should I move to now".

When I first heard about the hiring blitz, I thought it was good news, until I talked with someone who works for minimum wage with no benefits. She thought it was terrible because it means that everyone currently working at McDonalds will get even fewer hours per week than usual. So, will all these new workers working 10 hrs a week for $7.25/hr be counted against the unemployment rate?
Remember when working at mc'donalds was transitory. Like once you graduated high school you found a real job or went to college, with fond memories of playing in the ball pit and handing out free breakfast burritos like they were breadsticks at fazzoli's.
when I was in high school a job at McDonalds was a great paying job and was still only a couple bucks above minimum wage. But that was 30 years ago.
I got though undergrad at SUNY Stony Brook without student loans packing out shelves at a Pathmark on LI part time in the mid 80's.
The jobs right now are paying only a couple dollars more than what I was making 25-30 years ago.
I wouldn't even waste my time getting out of bed to go to these jobs. It's better to go on welfare and sit around. After transportation, etc. one of these workers nets basically nothing.
I think these people are panicking and don't know what to do. So they apply for a hell job, because that is what they are told to do.
