McDonalds Hires 62,000, Turns Away Over 938,000 Applicants For Minimum Wage, Part-Time Jobs

Tyler Durden's picture

This is what the US economy has been reduced to: McDonalds reports that as part of its employment event to hire 50,000 minimum wage, part-time (mostly) workers, subsequently raised to 62,000 it received a whopping 1 million applications, or a Tim Geithner jealousy inducing 6.2% hit rate (h/t X. Kurt. OSis). Alas, the US economy is now so pathetic that the bulk of the population will settle for anything. Literally anything. And the saddest part: over 938,000 applicants were turned away. Here's hoping to Burger King needs a few million janitors in the immediate future too. And yes, aside from reality, things in America are really recovering quite nicely.

From Bloomberg:

McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.

The April 19 national hiring day was the company’s first, said Danya Proud, a McDonald’s spokeswoman. She declined to disclose how many of the jobs were full- versus part-time. McDonald’s employed 400,000 workers worldwide at company-owned stores at the end of 2010, according to a company filing.

Earlier this month, McDonald’s said sales at stores open at least 13 months climbed 2.9 percent in the U.S. after it attracted more diners with items such as beverages and the Chipotle BBQ Bacon Angus burger. The fast-food chain has about 14,000 stores in the U.S. and more than 18,000 abroad. About 80 percent of all McDonald’s stores are franchised.

Oh yeah, and try to develope a skill when your working several shit house jobs to make ends meet because you got laid off of a job that paid good enough for you and your family to survive.

You have completely missed the fact that you recieved an opportunity that most never get and yet you throw it in other peoples faces as though everyone who didnt receive the same is just lazy.

My only wisdom to offer in these times is the lyrics to this song.

PULLING HARD AGAINST THE STREAM
Composed by Mr. BOOT.

In the world I've gained my knowledge,
And for it I've had to pay,
Though I never went to college
I've heard the poets say,
Life is a mighty river,
Rolling on from day to day,
Men are vessels launch'd upon it,
Sometimes wreck'd and cast away.

CHORUS: So then do your best for one another,
Making life a pleasant dream,
Help a worn and weary brother,
Pulling hard against the stream.

Many a bright good-hearted fellow,
Many a noble minded man,
Finds himself in water shallow,
Then assist him if you can,
Some succeed at ev'ry turning,
Fortune favours ev'ry scheme
Not a friend and not a shilling,
Pulling hard against the stream.

If the wind is in your favour,
And you've weather'd every squall,
Think of those who luckless labour,
Never get fair winds at all;
Working hard, contented, willing,
Struggling through life's ocean wide,
Not a friend and not a shilling,
Pulling hard against the tide.

Don't give way to foolish sorrow,
Let this keep you in good cheer,
Brighter days may come to-morrow,
If you try to persevere,
Darkest nights will have a morning,
Though the sky be overcast,
Longest lanes must have a turning,
And the side will turn at last.

Somebody has got to say this.

There is no free market for labor in the USA.

The minimum wage laws have killed it.

I am not trying to put a value judgment on this fact.  I'm just pointing it out.

What if those applicants had to submit a bid as to what they would accept as a rate of pay?  The hirees would be the ones willing to work for $1.00 per hour, if that.

So you are really talking about one million people whose time and whose labor is not worth $7.25/hr.

They are the tip of the iceberg.

This is the "structural unemployment" the wags talk about in vague terms.  If you are unskilled, or if your skills are not in demand, this is your fate.  The wage rates of unskilled labor worldwide have come to America.  It is actually a major problem that it is unlawful to hire folks at those rates.  Ergo, they remain unemployed.

Yes, we are more fucked than all the above posters have been willing to realize.

As pathetic as the facts may be, it still makes less sense to force unemployment on the unskilled via legislation.  The minimum wage laws do not help the unskilled.  They were passed to create a base for union contract negotiations.  Politicians did not get big contributions from the unskilled, young people in order to pass these laws in the first place, or to raise the floor over the years.

Ignore reality at your peril.

At least the Bernanke is trying to fix this problem via inflation.

There are plenty of countries around the world employing this approach.  There was a brief period when people might've thought that the USA, being the single "wealthiest" country on Earth by any per-capita measurement, could do better for its citizens than Mexico or Chad.

But maybe you're right.  We wake up to the fact that we can't, and most Americans should expect to sleep outdoors and die before 60.

Although what I don't understand is: if that's the society you want to live in, why not just go to Mexico or Chad NOW?  It'd be a lot easier than waiting around for the USA to age into that shit.

And you'll live like a king!

Yes, I am.  It's the only world we have, and I don't plan on leaving it anytime soon.

Putting aside all of the economist and theoretical bullshit I have to wade through in the comment section, the #1 tragedy of any "slump", "depression" or "recession", or "natural disaster" is that people who have something, anything, to offer society are left sitting on the couch watching the idiot tube.

If they have little to offer, they should still be allowed by law to offer it, and if a contract can be formed, we as a society will be better off for it.  It has someting to do with that "accumulation of wealth" discussed above in this thread.

To the degree that we, as Americans, find a low prevailing wage to be deplorable, we have an ethical duty to take the steps necessary to raise it, which is basically to accumulate enough capital so that a man can leverage his labor up to a higher value.

That would include doing whatever it takes to end the oligarchy's efforts to divert all capital to their useless hoards of wealth.

Thu, 04/28/2011 - 20:45 | 1218635 buzzard

The "minimum" wage should be that wage below which one can not sustain life and limb. Now ask yourself if you can sustain yourself on $7.50 per hour for a 40 hour week. Then we can talk about "minimum wage".

McDonalds continues to do big business because it is a heck of a cheap place to fill up on food.  Food prices are pretty high and climbing, it is a fact that taking the wife and two kids to McDonalds and choosing from the cheaper items can result in a feed family at a reasonable price. It is know that the poorer classes eat at McDonalds in very high numbers.

The son-in-law worked at a McDonalds after High School before joing the army and heading for Iraq. He told me that the food is not particularly well handeled by the workers. Like that sauce they put on burgers sits out at room temperature for a long time.  Very bad idea! The beef patty is a god awful mixture of beef products ground up and laced with chemicals that give a well tested beef like taste to the chopped beef byproducts that form the patty.

He will not eat at a McDonalds after having experienced working there. Apparently war is dangerous, but eating at McDonalds is still something even a combat veteran prefers to avoid if possible.

But like I said, poorer people can fill the kids up for a cheap price there. That these jobs are so highly sought after in today's economy is a sign that all the government manipulation of economic statistics can not hide or cover up. Think about for a moment. 1 million people trying to land burger flipper jobs!

This ain't like graduating high school, going in the army for four years, coming home and landing a factory job at middle class wages with health care and 4 weeks vacation and a defined benefit pension plan. Now it is work at McDonalds, get so feed up that 4 years of wartime army commitment is far preferable.

If the wars end, then our kids will not even have that option to gain a living wage at.

A true reflection of things to come. When you turn into a service based society this is the final result. When people are poorly trained and lack a quality education then this is the only options available to them. You take it because you need to eat and you need food on the table when your unemployment expires.

I believe that society has hit a turning point where we need to advance as a society and the only way to do this is to create products the world needs. Unfortunately there are not that many who can do this. In this period of re-tooling a society we need to make sure that people are trained in the right areas to be contributing members of society. When you let things go as long as we have and pretend that wealth created when in essence it was not then this is the end result. When the financial clowns could no longer pull rabits out of a hat or find suckers then you have an epiphany that "hey what have we really done for the past twenty or thirty years?" With the erosion of life style these jobs will create little to no REAL wealth in the society at all exacerbating an already growing problem in the creation of real wealth.

No, the "Death Grip" is the always ascending property taxes in proportion to the ever decreasing property values.

A mortgage can be paid off but property taxes are recurring no matter the underlying asset value..!

We are all sour now, Capone rules Chicago.

we are tears in our grandfathers eyes,

The dishonesy of those we have elected is beyond a normel humans ability to comprehend.

The governmet we have elected to represent our better path have abandoned us, for a shiney new Cadillac and a beach house in Spain.

Wherefore might anyone think that progress is possible without the failed and bankrupt failing,

The monster must die,so the new monster can be borne.

What a foul excuse for humanity are these money and power hungry, Fonzie hair having dickweeds doing, running the market.

What a bunch of shitweeds.

Mcdonalds and stores like Walmart are the future economic base of America.  As I've stated a while ago: pretty soon, you'll be living in a 'walmart' type ecosystem; schools, businesses, education, housing, entertainment, and more—all contained and managed by walmart type businesses. You'll be born at walmart hospitals; educated in wal-schools, work at 'em, live in their housing, you'll only learn and live in a way that's acceptable to the business.

And that isn't any kind of culture or identity to be proud of.

Take a note from the nihilists and just toss this crap away; we've fucked up big time, so just reset it and build something that's more resilient to unfettered greed and the pursuit of profit, and build something actually values proper ethics and morality: because even though our abstractions of "self" and "identity" are relative, we need some kind of proper ethical base to exist upon.

Ah, No.  Walmart is completely based on a nearly zero shipping costs framework ... ie  "Global Economy" .

Very soon(notice YOUR gas pump bill) the economics for the Global Economy (ie 1000 miles away for everything you buy, even your lettuce) will be a memory.

Walmart has to sell a LOT of shit PER DAY or they are toast.

Notice the CEO's message today on ZH.   They are nearly Toast already.  You will see mass Walmart store closings.

And there will be no Mom and Pop stores to replace them for a while(Walmart put them all out of business on the way up).

On the way down, there will be a vacuum for a good while.

PEAK OIL bitches.

Globalism is SOOOOO last century.

The McDonad's campaign was a bit disingenuous.  The typical McDonald's would hire 4-5 people a month anyway.  Turnover is 100% or better annually in most stores, and a store employs 50-60 or more part time people.  So they would need to hire that many people simply to maintain normal levels.  Seems to be mostly for publicity, which McDonald's does very well.

"Last week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that it was going to hold nations accountable for their economic decisions and publish quarterly yardsticks to measure their success in adopting “appropriate” policies. Who decides what’s appropriate? The European central bankers who run the IMF. The United States will have to meekly comply. The next step? Sanctions against nations that beg to differ with the IMF — our new global Czar."

-- From Dick Morris.com, April 21, 2011

We knew this, but Dick Morris puts some political flesh (facade) on the economic infrastructure bones that has already been put in place by the European central bankers.

Our central bankers and planners are purposely destroying the current system to roll us up into the new system which will be run by unelected, unaccountable, bureaucrats. Our Fed is destroying the current US monetary system on schedule so there will be no going back, at least, in their minds.

Obama's only significant piece of legislation as Senator was a yearly tax on Americans of 2.5% of GDP, about $250 billion per year at the time, to be paid to the IMF through the UN. You never heard of it because it didn't go anywhere -- but it was called the "Global Poverty Act".

No doubt Obama is totally on board to sell out his own country and is already running to be the first Imperial Czar of the NWO with his piece of legislation to show his good intentions to the NWO. Perhaps that's why he always sounds like a haughty finger pointer sent from the UN instead of an advocate for the interests of the American people. It also might explain why he felt he had to campaign in Europe during the 2008 primaries and why he has a Turrette-like need to diss America and Western allies for the Islamacists and former Soviets.

He's was/is running for president of the world, just like he was always running for president before he was even elected senator.  As president he's already signed EOs allowing foreign troops on American soil and for Interpol to operate against American citizens without regard to our constitutional protections. He's stepwise delivering us to the wolves.

Why so socialist, Barack?
