Meet The KGB 2.0: Cold War Espionage Is Back, As Spies In The US Serve To Determine Russian Gold Policy, And Much More

Tyler Durden's picture

The KGB is back, and it's leaner and meaner than ever. In a dramatic bust, the FBI has arrested 10 Russian individuals for allegedly carrying out long-term, deep cover assignments in the United
States on behalf of Russia. The 37 page indictment from the Southern District of New York reads like a John LeCarre-cum-Ian Flemming espionage thriller and has everything including conspiracies, brush passes, handlers, money exchanges, code words, flash memory cards, covert meetings in Central Park, cracked secret codes, infiltration of strategic US organizations, and last but not least, Russia's apparent interest "about prospects for the global gold market", whereby espionage conducted by one of the group of rounded-up spies served to at least partially determine Russian policy vis-a-vis gold.

Meet the "Illegals"

The FBI's complaint begins with an overview of the Russian espionage program:

The FBI has conducted a multi-year investigation of a network of United States-based agents of the foreign intelligence organ of the Russian Federation (the "SVR"). The targets of the FBI's investigation include covert SVR agents who assume false identities, and who are living in the United States on long-term, "deep-cover" assignments. These Russian secret agents work to hide all connections between themselves and Russia, even as they act at the direction and under the control of the SVR; these secret agents are typically called "illegals."

"Illegal" agents of the SVR generall receive extensive training before coming to the United States. This training has typically focused on, among other things: foreign languages; agent-to-agent communications, including the use of brush-passes; short-wave radio operation and invisible writing; the use of codes and ciphers, including the use of encrypted Morse code messages; the creation and use of a cover profession; counter-surveillance measures; concealment and destruction of equipment and materials used in connection with their work as agents; and the avoidance of detection during their work as agents.

The FBI's investigation has revealed that a network of Illegals is now living and operating in the United States in the service of one primary, long-term goal: to become sufficiently "Americanized" such that they can gather information about the United States for Russia, and can successfully recruit sources who are in, or are able to infiltrate, United States policy-making circles.

Each Illegal has a specific purpose, as spelled out by the following message from the Moscow Center of the SVR, which has been decrypted by the FBI:

You were sent to USA for long-term service trip. Your education, bank accounts, car, house etc. - all these serve one goal: fulfill your main mission, i.e. to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US and send [intelligence reports] to C[enter].

The complaint goes into detail describing various acts of the "conspiracy" to commit espionage. As can be seen from the list below, this is not your garden variety, amateur hour operation:

Additionally, the FBI list out the various means and methods to effectuate the conspiracy, including various forms of Secret communications, including steganography, radiograms; secret payments to the conspirators, detailing the various means of compensation of the Illegals by Moscow Center; foreign payments to the conspirator; use of false identities and travel documents.

The ringleader of the group, is allegedly one "Christopher R. Metsos", "a secret SVR agent who is based abroad, and who has repeatedly entered the United States to meet with certain Illegals and, among other things, to pay them on behalf of Moscow Center. On four separate occasions during the period from on or about February 24, 2001 through on or about April 17, 2005, Metsos and Richard Murphy, the defendant, met together at a restaurant in Sunnyside, NY." The narrative goes into excruciating detail describing Metsos actions, which the FBI appears had been observing for many years up until today's bust.

And while the indictment goes to list various nests of conspiratorial activity among the 10 arrests, including the "Boston conspirators", as well as those from Yonkers and Seattle, it is the New Jersey conspirators that are most interesting, and particularly one Cynthia Murphy of Mont Clair, NJ. The government proceeds to highlight the following key information which Ms. Murhpy was responsible for:

In an "infotask" from the spring of 2009, in advance of "Obama's visit to [Russia]," the SVR requested information on the U.S. position with respect to a new Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, Afghanistan, and Iran's nuclear program. Moscow Center indicated that it "needs intels" which should reflect approaches and ideas of "[Russia] policy team members:" [four names of sub-cabinet US foreign policy officials, omitted]. Try to outline their views and most important Obama's goals which he expects to achieve during summit in July and how does his team plan to do it (arguments, provisions, means of persuasion to 'lure' Russia into cooperation in US interest).

and this particular tidbit, which seems of most interest:

On a number of other occasions, the SVR specifically indicated that information collected and conveyed by the New Jersey Conspirators was especially valuable. Thus, for example, during the summer and fall of 2009, CYNTHIA MURPHY, the defendant, using contacts she had met in New York, conveyed a number of reports to Center about prospects for the global gold market. In October of 2009, the SVR responded: "Info: on gold - v. usefull [sic], it was sent directly (after due adaptation) to Min of Finance, Ministry of Economic Development.

Well, at least we now know where Russia is getting its gold hoarding ideas from.

What is most interesting, is to find out just how the Wall Street financier is who is about to get pinched for interacting with Ms. Murphy:

In a message dated "Feb 3 09" the New Jersey Conspirators reported that, through her work, CYNTHIA MURPHY, the defendant, "had several work-related personal meetings with [a prominent New York-based financier, name omitted] and was assigned his account"; the message accurately described the financier as "prominent in politics," "an active fundraiser for [a major political party, name omitted]." A response from Moscow Center indicated that the financier "is checked in C's database-he is clean. Of course he is very interesting 'target'. Try to build up a little by little relations with him moving beyond just [work] framework. Maybe he can provide [Murphy] with remarks re US foreign policy, "roumors" [sic] about White house internal 'kicthen', invite her to venues (to [major political party HQ in NYC, for instance).... etc. In short, consider carefully all options in regard to [financier]."

It appears Mr. "Murphy" is quite the out-of-the-box thinker when it comes to luring prominent New Yorkers "beyond just 'work' framework." We are confident the prominent NY-financier's wife will be ecstatic to find out her husband was having a potential affair with a Russian spy. And a Zero Hedge hat to the first to uncover just who this mysterious person is.

All in all, this will provide countless hours of entertainment for the US counterespionage population. In the meantime, we are curious how the President will present this interesting break from the monotone of the summer doldrums to the US population, and just what diplomatic escalation he will demand vis-a-vis a suddenly very strategically (and commoditally) important Russia.

Also, if readers have access to Ms. Murphy's picture, we would be quite interested in finding out just what this individual, who has apparently shaped Russian gold policy to no little extent, looks like.

JimiJohn: I clicked the link, read the text and watched the video. Is this supposed to imply that these 4 dudes somehow planted explosives in Tower1 that brought the thing down? I hope not because that's really a stretch.

I used to believe a conspiracy killed JFK. I've read the books and watched the documentaries. I believed in the conspiracy until 9/11. I've now heard almost 9 years of utter nonsense conspiracy theories regarding the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They are so full of revisionist history and bullshit that I've come to the conclusion that the various JFK conspiracies are of the same ilk.

As hard as it might be to comprehend: 19 assholes in airplanes amazingly succeeeded in destroying the WTC and setting fire to The Pentagon. Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, got off a single, lucky shot and killed JFK.

Nothing against JFK, I really think he was our last good man as President (thanks mostly to brother Bobby), but he should have stopped the motorcade, and yes he should have noticed.  Hindsight is 20/20 though.

While I am at it, JFK, jr should have noticed something was up before his last flight.  For anyone that doesn't know about it, this may be the most fascinating cover up of all.  For example, he took meticulous flight records, but he did not that night.  Also, he always flew with a co-pilot, and that night, he was given a pilot he was not familiar with.  This among many other things.

No, shit, I hear ya. The book "On The Trail of The Assassins", by Jim Garrison is quite compelling and reasonable. I'd suggest you read it. "High Treason" by H.E. Livingstone is excellent, as well.

My point is: It was easy for me to assume conspiracy because I didn't live through the moment. I was born in 1966. I don't have eyes, ears and a memory to fill in the blanks. 9/11 is the same way. I lived it. I saw what happened. I recall it vividly. It seems to me that many of the videos and theories re 9/11 have been made by college and high school students who were only upset on that actual day because the news coverage pre-empted their cartoons. Now, 5-9 years on, their imaginations run wild with conspiracy theories, just like my imagination used to run wild with theories re JFK.

Really. I saw an interview with an architech of the WTC and he said he knew the tower was done for once he saw the persistance and intensity of the fire. The vertical steel core structural steel beams lost some of their strength in the fire, the exterior floor pins gave way, and once a floor gave way it set in motion a chair reaction whereby the entire structure pancaked.

I've watched movies on how the towers were constructed, and the design flaw is obvious. The strength of the building was in the outer steel and the inner steel. But the fatal flaw was how weakly the floors were anchored to the exterior steel skeleton on the buildings. Once the interior steel core vertical elements began sagging in the fire, the floors pancaked down.

I love a good conspiracy but there's plenty of film footage showing each plane hitting the towers. And JFK was shot from the front. Every doctor who examined the body in Dallas saw an exit wound in the back of the head, plus some brain tissue extruding out. Exit wound in the back of the head, head facing forward, means shot from the front, not the back. Also a neat entrance wound in the front of the throat.

+1 for the head shot.  Tis true.  He was shot in the neck too, that is why he grabbed his neck, he was choking, and a Dr. cut open the shot through the throat right away to hide the evidence.

Well, I am no architect; once again I will claim not to know what the hell happened that day but I will stick with my quote that it doesn't add up.  As for the buildings, it just seems impossible that they fell that way.  NIST recinded the pancake theory by the way.  And while I am at it, no plane hit building 7, the only skyscraper to ever fall due to office fires.  Thanks for the tip about the architect; I will look into what he has to say.  From what I heard, the planes were built to withstand an airplane.  This next reference is a strawman, I know, but the Empire State Building was hit by a plane.  Just sayin'....

Y'all may have heard this quote before, but Ben Franklin said "two people can keep a secret if one of them is dead." Conspiracies of the scale of a JFK assassination or an insider 9/11 attack would involve scores, hundreds or thousands of people. By now, none of them would come forward with definitive proof for the fame, the money or out of guilt? No way. Conspiracy bullshit is just noise to distract us...

I'm surely not an expert on these types of things Nanny, but it depends on the scale of the conspiracy. If it started in the WH, we have those folks and advisers. If explosives were planted in the towers it would require lots of people to plan that and carry it out. If the hijackers were not involved and are still alive, how many people were involved in their capture and release. See, depending on the level a person takes it there could be countless people involved. Even at the lowest level of conspiracy it would take dozens of people.

Sorry, Lennon. I have a close friend,(an FBI agent) who was assigned to help with the post-crash evidence collection and cleanup at the Pentagon. According to him, the evidence there was consistent with a high speed crash of a passenger jet into the building. There was plenty of evidence at the scene, not "zero". An eyewitness told me. Yet truthers will always find a way to discount evidence which doesn't support their point. It's a no-win game.

Turdman,

I am implying that there is something fishy about the fact that these people with connections to Israeli intelligence were allowed to live in a storage unit for a month with acess to the entire building.  I am merely putting it out there for you to draw your own conclusion.

I will add this though; half of the said hijackers are still very much alive, and the half that were aboard the planes, the hijackers, they failed flight school and were never given air time.  Then they piloted aircraft and did areal maneuvers that Air Force pilots could only do quote, "1 in 20 tries."

You know what is important?  That you tried to see if there was a conspiracy behind both cases.  Really, thats all I care about.  That people are open to the suggestion instead of mindlessly sitting idle while oilgarchs lead us into wars, manipulate the markets, and collapse the world economies.

Oh, and Lee Harvey got eight shots off in as many seconds, but who's counting ;)

I am sick of you people throwing insults as a first and last resort.  If you wish to retort, please, do so.  Offer evidence to debunk, I will consider it.  But your name calling is a waste of time and space.  Just troll and junk if you must, that is obviously why the button is there, so for you to feel important and included.

Seriously though, I am sick of all this name calling!  This site is bigger than you and I; it is for us to exchange our ideas.  You not only disrespect me (I care not, who are you anyway?) you disrespect yourself (obviously you do not care about that, or else you would not be slanderous) but YOU DISRESPECT THIS SITE.

Indeed. People here are willing to bash the statists at every other goddam opportunity, yet refuse to consider any alternatives to 9/11 other than the monkey shit flinging at the congressional circle jerk, because it might alter their fucking realities of we=good, them=evil, and that gas they put in their Ford Extinction is no reason to feel guilty. If we don't see the people dying for cheap oil, it did not happen, right? That shit went out the window with the tooth-fucking-fairy.

Meatime, somebody please explain WTC. Compare and contrast to buildings in former Yugoslavia, which were actually bombed/burned in the wars after the Iron Curtain fell, yet they still stand today, or the many steel buildings have burned up the world over, (Spain, LA, Taiwan, Las  Vegas) none of which collapsed. In fact, most still stand...save for these three.

Let's hear the explanations? I am "listening."

Rant -off. Flame the fuck away.

I just go with the facts. Faux News reported that the DEA and FBI captured close to 200 Israelis who were surveiling the DEA, US military, large corporations and a number of the 9/11 hijackers. Some of the Israelis had such Hudzpa they were showing up at the homes of Generals and DEA officials where they were captured. A few were captured after infiltrating US military bases. The FBI was trailing multiple groups of Israelis. A few of the Israeli groups were living near and monitoring some of the 9/11 hijackers.

The DEA report that Faux News cited was later leaked to the internet. It stated the Israelis were feeding information on the DEA to the Israeli government. The Israeli government then fed that information to Israeli drug gangs so they could avoid capture. The Israelis also were collecting military and industrial secrets to send back to help Israeli companies.

I have seen many of these Israeli "students" in Florida malls and shops. Many pretended to be art students selling original art. In reality they were selling junk to American Jews who thought they were helping them pay for college in Israel. Others were selling stupid Zoom Copters. No idea how many were selling extasy and drugs but there was no way they were selling enough junk to pay their bills. It was funny how many booked it out of town after 9/11. The kiosks and store fronts they had in the Malls were empty.

When the art students appeared on Israeli TV, they said their purpose was to document the event. You can find the video here.

And the FOX report.

Turd Ferguson's picture

OK, I've watched all four videos. Some conclusions:

1) The last 9 years have aged Carl Cameron a lot.

2) These reports would never have appeared on ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN. They are a great example of the terrific, unbiased reporting that FOX often does. Enough with the FAUX News bullshit, OK.

3) I have no doubt that Israel aggressively conducts espionage in the US and everywhere. The reason is accurately summed up by the Defense Intelligence Report in video #1. "The Israelis are motivated by strong survival instincts which dictate every facet of their political and economic policies". Since the US changes leadership every 4-8 years and our leaders seem to vacillate in their support of Israel, can you blame them for spying on us?

4) To go from admitted espionage of everything from technology to Arab terrorists to assigning blame for 9/11 is a gigantic, incongruent leap. Why would Israel covertly kill 3000 Americans? Would they not expect our full wrath in retaliation? It would be a death sentence and completely inconsistent with their behavior of the previous 53 years.

5) The scrolling news at the bottom of the screen from December of 2001 is pretty sad to read, too. Anthrax attacks. UBL pinned down in the Tora Bora. Brings back a lot of memories.

What is completely plausible is that Mossad, because they are good at what they do, knew about the 9/11 plot while American intelligence agencies acted like a bunch of ass-clowns and killed, red-taped or ignored a bunch of good leads and evidence that could have prevented the whole thing. The former is extremely likely especially since the later is a cold fact.

It's even possible that Mossad shared their good info with the US government who still did nothing worthwhile with it.

So whaddya gonna do if your Israel?  Maybe get some of your folks the hell out of the way and try somehow to turn various aspects of the situation to your advantage - that's what.  Many Israelis probably were happy that America was finally mugged by the reality of Muslim terrorism.  Can't say I blame them and I knew a lot of people in the towers.

Never try and attribute conspiracy where incompetence (especially by US government) and fuck-up is a better fit, and even if it isn't resist the urge.  I mean , how is it that just about the only thing the government is any good at is pulling off conspiracies and keeping them secret perpetually?  It don't add up.

Well then that's settled. You're welcome and all that. Let nary a further ZH post be sullied by wacky 9/11 jibber-jabber again.

Cool video. The using planes as missiles scenario was no surprise. The warnings to the government turned out to be true, but I bet there are thousands of such warnings which don't pan out. So the question is, did the signal get lost in the noise, or, did the government purposely allow 9-11 to occur having been specifically warned? I prefer to believe it was incompetence rather than calculated. People have been having the same debate about Pearl Harbor, and even about the USS Maine.

JJ: The 9/11 Commission was a political cover, plain and simple, just like every other Congressional commission.

Just last week, the fucking criminal politicians in Congress used their bullshit deficit "commission" as an excuse to operate the government without a budget until after the mid-term elections. Again, unadulterated political cover bullshit.

Just because the 9/11 Commission and the Warren Commission, as political cover tools, provided incomplete and, at times nonsense, conclusions does not make their aims nefarious in nature. Again, they provided cover for politicians who were seeking their ultimate goal: re-election. Nothing more, nothing less.

Again, many on here claim they have all the answers. Good for them. I'm just a caveman, living in my bunker in Kansas. I have my opinions but I'll be the first to admit that I do NOT know everything.

I suppose that everything is relative. "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".

But the key word is "theory". Like the theory of global warming or the theory of evolution. They are theories because they can not be proven scientifically.

9/11 guilt cannot be "proven" either, I guess, but at some point you have to believe in a few things otherwise you become spineless like a jellyfish, hopelessly adrift on the prevailing current.

Chesterton said it best but I must paraphrase: A man who believes in nothing will believe in anything.

Btw, Chesterton also said "The people who are the most bigoted are the people who have no convictions at all." This is certainly true of some of the regular contributors here at ZH.

Tell me the trajectory of that bullet is in a direct line to hit both these people.  Not even close.  A shot from that window to the "X" is almost straight down, not a flatter plane where the bullet would have hit both people.  A shot in that trajectory would have went in Kennedy's neck and down through his abdomen, not out the front of his neck and then into the Gov.

According to official Dallas Police sources Oswald's fingerprints were not on the murder weapon, Oswald was not on the sixth floor at the time of the shooting (he was seen on the second floor, drinking a Coke, by Officer Marion Baker less than 2 minutes after the shooting) and Oswald did not fire a rifle that day, as determined by paraffin tests.

Strategy Session: Energy-Efficient Government Data Centers

Government agencies face new requirements for increasing energy efficiency and lowering their carbon footprints. The path to success involves a combination of virtualization, server consolidation, cooling systems and other technologies that provide fine-grained control over data center resources

http://govdatacenters.informationweek.com/?k=axxe&cid=article_axxe

"The Obama administration is set to propose a new system for authenticating people, organizations and infrastructure on the Web. The online authentication and identity management system would be targeted at the transactional level -- for example, when someone logs into their banking website or completes an online e-commerce purchase.

Making such a system effective, however, will require creating an "identity ecosystem," backed by extensive public/private cooperation, said White House cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt, delivering the opening keynote speech at the Symantec Government Symposium 2010 in Washington on Tuesday.

Here is a quick video tour of the Motorola Droid X, the newest Android handset for Verizon Wireless.

"This strategy cannot exist in isolation," he said. "It's going to take all of us working together." Furthermore, "we should not have to dramatically change the way we do business -- this should be a natural path forward," he said.

That path forward will hinge on a new draft of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, due to be released Friday for the first time to the public, for a three-week comment period. Formerly known as the National Strategy for Secure Online Transactions, the report offers specific strategy and implementation recommendations, and may also recommend more sweeping policy and privacy changes.

The report builds on the Obama-commissioned Cyberspace Policy Review, which analyzed the government's information and communications infrastructure defensive capabilities. One of the report's recommendations was to "build a cybersecurity-based identity management vision and strategy that addresses privacy and civil liberties interests, leveraging privacy-enhancing technologies for the nation."

Simply issuing a Web-friendly biometric identification card to everyone in the country, of course, wouldn't necessarily make anyone or anything more secure, including online transactions. As the report also notes, to be effective, security tools and technology must be complemented by education. "There is always a necessity to do awareness and education of the end user," said Schmidt. "But you're not trying to teach the end user how to be a security expert."

InformationWeek has published an in-depth report on energy-efficient government data centers."

Regarding this ZH report. It reminds me of this.

US Senate committee has approved a wide-ranging cybersecurity bill that some critics have suggested would give the US president the authority to shut down parts of the Internet during a cyberattack.
Senator Joe Lieberman and other bill sponsors have refuted the charges that the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act gives the president an Internet "kill switch." Instead, the bill puts limits on the powers the president already has to cause "the closing of any facility or stations for wire communication" in a time of war, as described in the Communications Act of 1934, they said in a breakdown of the bill published on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee website.

It's its good enough for Communist China...  After all this is the USA, why should we be treated different then the Communist Chinese?

The sad thing is this is supported both both sides of the one party system.  After all they are united in their hatred of us, and their desire to vampire us dry.

Did anyone else notice that the Treasury cancelled it's 5 and 7 year auctions today? There were 85B in auctions that just got cancelled. I've been shorting the S&P on days when there's nearly 100B in treasury auctions scheduled because for the last 3 months that's coincided with huge S&P drops. (Flash Crash was on a 143B auction day) They seem to have replaced all the longer term auctions with shorter ones, mostly 56day auctions. Cant the bastards follow their own schedules so I can make money off them?

Why should they follow schedules when we are going to fly without a budget?

Exactly! Why even have auctions when you don't have to manage a balance sheet?

How were these "spies" not "lobbyists"?

I'm seriously asking.

I don't think the geniuses on Capitol Hill have created a spies registry database yet.

Barney Frank will get right on that.
