Mid-Term Election Open Thread

Tyler Durden's picture

Since political commentary is most certainly not our strong suit, and since the Zero Hedge staff really couldn't care less about the outcome of this particular election, we leave it up to our proactive and interested readers to discuss, if they so desire, the evening's political developments.

Here is some interactive map thingy for those who care about being kept up to the millisecond, and thus not being frontrun by Johnny 5 in the short massacre currently raging in the Globex.

But, Gov. Moonbeam?

It'll all end in tears.

My father-in-law had a major stroke and lost his ability to speak and read. In Franklin County Florida the assistant supervisor of elections brought an absentee ballot to the nursing home where he resides and recorded his vote for him (along with other residents). My wife called the supervisor of elections to voice a formal complaint. My wife was subjected to 10 minutes of excuses and finally told by the supervisor of elections that she would call her back with the proper channels to file a complaint. While waiting for the return call, she received a call from her sister about this matter. It turns out that my wifes sister is married to a distant relative of the assistant supervisor of elections.

From my perspective, election fraud was committed. A vote was recorded by a man who can not speak, has no idea of who the candidates are and is unable to read to verify what vote was taken. Furthermore, it is a gross violation of privacy by a government official to relay a conversation of one person to the family member of another.

This is a micro example of a macro problem with elections in this country. It is tantamount to stuffing the ballot box. My wife intends to follow through with the formal complaint including the breach of privacy.

John Wagner, the oldest man in Buffalo--one hundred and four years old --recently walked a mile and a half in two weeks.

He is as cheerful and bright as any of these other old men that charge around so persistently and tiresomely in the newspapers, and in every way as remarkable.

Last November he walked five blocks in a rainstorm, without any shelter but an umbrella, and cast his vote for Grant, remarking that he had voted for forty-seven presidents--which was a lie.

His "second crop" of rich brown hair arrived from New York yesterday, and he has a new set of teeth coming from Philadelphia.

He is to be married next week to a girl one hundred and two years old, who still takes in washing.

They have been engaged eighty years, but their parents persistently refused their consent until three days ago.

John Wagner is two years older than the Rhode Island veteran, and yet has never tasted a drop of liquor in his life--unless-unless you count whisky.

Meanwhile the MSNBC media just spun a story with Larry O'donell for Rand Pauls Speech:

"If Rand Paul does not vote to raise the debt ceiling he can cause a financial collapse and global depression"

There you have it. Already spinning the plates. If Rand Paul filibusters than we would cause a world wide depression and Rand Paul will be the cause as MSNBC quoted.

Newsflash..There is no FUCKING CHANCE Rand will raise the debt ceiling you tax coffer thieving pieces of garbage.

And now Rand Paul was just called an anarchist by Olbermann if he goes that path. So I ask you Zero Hedge...Who is our enemy and the propagaters of this ponzi?

And now Ed Schulz just called him a "dictator" for imposing his beliefs and is claiming Rand Paul hangs out with birthers..

I have this to say to you ZH..It is game on

Now MSNBC is crying about potential impeachments for Obama and Bachman subpeonas for the financial criminals. Claiming Reid has been outgunned by the "Massive tea party" donations LOL

From the Daily Bell.

I am so proud Ron is from my district 14

http://www.thedailybell.com/1496/Libertarian-Wave.html

In 2008, Congressman Ron Paul sparked a libertarian revolution (and began the Tea Party) with his run for the presidency as a libertarian Republican. Since then almost every one of Ron Paul's economic perspectives have found fertile soil. For those who don't believe a real classical-liberal realignment is coming, we have a simple question: Why should the intellectual and sociopolitical ferment reflected in the Internet suddenly cease? In our humble opinion, the "enlightenment" continues, driven by the economic crisis itself and the free-market thinking to be found on the Internet.

The truth-telling of the Internet combined with the economic downturn, has begun to make the political discourse increasingly schizophrenic in our view. The changes between right and left are coming faster and faster. This is not because people are seeking answers but is symptomatic of a frustrated – increasingly enraged – electorate. People are looking for the one party that is not being offered – the Libertarian party. Sounds weird? Let us make the case ...

The Libertarian party is tarred as a party for drug addicts and other "far out" ideas that make it somewhat unpalatable to hard-core US conservatives. But in actuality the largest swath of American voters are small-L libertarians as a result of American cultural leanings and Constitutional antecedents. Probably a vast slice of the electorate would settle for less government meddling at this point in both the bedroom and the economy.

Voters have simply not coalesced yet around this idea – have not fully realized it – but we think it is coming. What is going to happen is that – once Republicans are empowered again – the debate over spending will increase alongside criticism regarding America's serial wars, overlapping intelligence agencies and generally the cost of maintaining the welfare/warfare state. It is "gridlock" most likely that will spark this further conversation, and we would expect that it will be an increasingly vocal one over the next two years.

We are at a point now where the political structure of the US will begin to change in our view. There is no more love for Republicans within the electorate at this point than for Democrats. The good will is all used up. We note, for instance, that President George Bush has begun to make more appearances and that his biography of his presidential years is coming out. Obviously Republicans and Bush himself hope to capitalize on the sweeping repudiation of Obama's policies and governing philosophy.

State bailouts have already begun?

"What this panel and so many other investors fail to appreciate is that state bailouts have already begun. Over 20% of California's debt issuance during 2009 and over 30% of its debt issuance in 2010 to date has been subsidized by the federal government in a program known as Build America Bonds. Under the program, the U.S. Treasury covers 35% of the interest paid by the bonds. Arguably, without this program the interest cost of bonds for some states would have reached prohibitive levels.

California is not alone: Over 30% of Illinois's debt and over 40% of Nevada's debt issued since 2009 has also been subsidized with these bonds. These states might have already reached some type of tipping point had the federal program not been in place."

I have tried to watch MSNBC to get the other side of things but it's like Chinese water torture for me. They could've worked for Pravda.

Having said that, I understand why many here want to opt out of the process or even punt to various conspiracy theories. I cannot do that...yet. Here is the intellectual problem I see with that. It is IF you really truly believe that both major American parties are simply two faces of the same ruling party, i.e. there's no real idealogical difference; or you believe there's a shadow ruling organization behind them then there are only two possibilities for you. Option1: You can and should revolt. The system is broken or coopted and we have an illegitimate government. Option 2: You flee. Head to Costa Rica, Tahiti, wherever you think you can survive. I suppose there's a limited third option which is keep your head down and hope you can survive long enough to die in your old age...but things will certainly keep getting worse. That's a crap option. I actually don't think most of you believe that, at least not fully, not yet. You're like the budding socialists who wear Che' Guevera t-shirts or commie berets, yet never move to Cuba or the old Soviet Union. Hollywood folks claim to admire Castro yet, they never go there to be one of the common folks. I never saw John Lenin go to China and get his blue denim and bicycle. Likewise, the people who claim to truly believe that 9/11 was an inside job never revolt. They should if they believe our own government purposely murdered our own citizens...and would do so again.

I am going to guess that despite your surface indifference which is a form of assuming some sort of superior world view, you do hope, even if its only a glimmer..for a positive change. For most here on zerohedge, I would say it tilts toward some libertarian type world with minimal government and maximum freedom. Not everyone, of course.  Here is how I think it breaks out in the U.S. and why I have a small amount of hope myself.

I believe there are only two real parties anywhere in the world including the United States. There is the Communist Party which is the honest socialist party. They say essentially that the State owns everything including you and that some wise ruling elite will direct everyone toward the collective good. The other party is the Libertarian Party which says that everyone owns themselves and no one can force you to serve another. They (and I) also believe the collective is a fiction and just a cover for an autocratic government. All other parties are some combination of these two parties. American Democrats are in truth democratic socialists. American Republicans are conflicted. The Tea Party is a reaction to not only Obama but to a large extent, Bush and RINO's. They want a contrasting party to the ever leftward Democrats. The reason that Republicans are only inconsistent opponents to the same direction as the Dems is that their ideology is so bad. You find Arlen Specter, Cassel, Crist and McCain in the same party with Ron Paul, DeMint and others. The first group are in my mind conservative democrats, ideologically speaking. They actually accept the idea that the population is to be ruled and large amounts of income are to be redistributed and government power is fairly unlimited. They just differ on the colors and furniture arrangement in the same house the Dems would build. Dems are doing what comes natural which is to gather power and develop constituencies based on that power that will sell out their fellow man. They will and are building an official party of the state. Their unofficial motto is "Come to us and we will give you other peoples' stuff and grant you favors...as long as you give us your money and votes." Unions are a great example. The preferred economic system is at least Keynes up to Marx.

My hope is that the natural traditional American aversion to being ruled will surface and first change the Republican party. They will have to become practical libertarians with Austrian economics. They have to do this or there will be no alternative when the democrat-socialist ideas fail(and they will). There must be someone to stand up and say, "I have a different solution and direction we can go." Failing to do that, they are the party most likely to disappear just like the Whigs which preceded them.

The other thing that gives me hope is that there is a great cosmic balancing act that occurs. While the Dems and socialists in general can build powerful long lasting constituents from welfare recipients (who don't vote) to unions to corporate favorites, their ideas do not work in the long run. The fiat currency, redistributive, collectivist centralized state always fails and always will. It conflicts with human nature. Eventually, the electorate may realize this and go back to the American libertarian roots which is what allowed this country to surpass all others in economic might, military might and general wellbeing without grand military conquest, a.k.a. Mongols, Romans, etc.

So, I still vote, speak to individuals and small groups on the superiority of liberty and voluntary relationships and hope for the best over time. I'm not ready to opt out or give up at this point...even as my industry is being destroyed by the State. I will hope that the Tea Party will salt the Republican Party with ideologically strong candidates, especially with their pitchforks and torches at their backs, lol. It will take time and maybe the economic catastrophe/s that are regularly predicted on this site. But I feel it is possible.

Yes, amazing, impeachment of Clinton for sexual indiscretion but not Bush for starting a war, lying to the nation and congress.  Now the Repùblicans should be happy as pigs in shit because they have been shitting all over the constutution for years, stealing elections, sucking elite cock, obstructing everything they can indiscriminately to gain an electoral advantage in which they have succeeded, and so ignorant that many don´t realize that that the whole two party system is a sham.  Maybe the only difference is that Republicans are more likely to blame immigrants, the poor and fly American flags.  At least the Dems are not generally so mean spirited.  But neither really have balls, paid puppets they are.  Re. I guess the Obanksters won't feel it was a total loss tonight.

Sad.  Civil liberties have just loss a crucial defender.

Yeah that is right. The d-bag also voted for a lot of the bailouts and health care so, he got what he deserved. I voted third party but whatever. He lost a lot of my respect recently.

Also the Dems knew he was in trouble and let him vote against them because they already had the votes. It's a joke.

I was very happy he voted against the Patriot Act but what have you done for us lately?

The fact that Obama and his crew (an extension of Bush and his crew) was nowhere to provide support is a telling indicator of Feingold's credibility.

How many of these new reps will have the foresight, courage and vigilance he has already demonstrated?  Deeds speak.  His words and votes were a loud voice for liberty when it was truly needed:

http://www.archipelago.org/vol6-2/feingold.htm

(as previously linked)

Ultimately he was a strong constitutionalist. Not sure how many of those are left, tho Rand Paul is a good sign.  Hope he doesn't disappoint.

I would have voted for him had he not voted as he did for the bailouts and healthcare.

Can't belive that asshole Harry Reid is actually going to pull it out.  Apparently he fixed it with the casinos to bus all their workers to the voting booths .  I thought that was supposed to be illegal.

I think you got it right. Probably bussed in union hacks from CA to vote in Nevada. I love Vegas but I think I am done with a state stupid enough to reelect a guy that will destroy it. It's like WV electing greenie Dems that will destroy the coal industry. Morons.

Indian casinos for me from now on. I like to call my losses, "war reparations", lol.

Years ago I came to the realization that our country was doomed by the corrupt politician puppets and the ruling elite.  After seeing genuine anger arise over the ever more outrageously criminal behavior of Washington and Wall Street I made the mistake of thinking maybe this election we would see a change... how can I continue to be so stupid?  Despite the gains of the Republicans (I'm NOT a Republican, but getting rid of the Democratic monopoly can't be bad) the great unwashed still returned such great statesmen as Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Barney Frank to office.  Unemployment in Las Vegas is 15+% and they re-elect Reid?  What the fuck am I missing?  At least I can now get back to looking out for my family and friends and forgetting about such worthless diversions as dreaming that we'd start moving back towards the rule of law and respect for the Constitution.  Another sad (election) day in America...

I had a similar reaction when I saw those three reelected. Barney Frank (with the retiring Chris Dodd) was front and center in the mortgage debacle. And his local morons reelected him.

I actually think the Democrats got a moral victory tonight. If you can't throw out the ruling party in the worst economy since the Great Depression...especially the key players, then maybe there's no hope.

There is a theory that we get the government we deserve.

it's not the vote it's who counts the votes that has control..elites fix races in the more corrupt states..Mass, NV, Washinton st, seems they are all long term Dem strongholds..not that having a R next to your name makes you an angel.

vote but expect corruption to call the close races.

I'm with ZH, who cares, same shit different day.  All politicians are scum.

Wed, 11/03/2010 - 05:08 | 695280 ricksventures
ricksventures's picture

i think ZH is trying to stay neutral but not caring hmmm ???

they care how much or if any worthless dollars will be printed in next days

they care if private gold and mines will be confiscated or not within next few years

they care if 500mil buys u a politician or a loaf of bread

they would care if US was hunting down their servers, wherever they are and trying to shut them down for whatever reason

you would care if your dad's farm land was confiscated by michelle obama for her personal organic garden and your dad was shot for refusing to give it away

don't think any of that can't happen in your lifetime ??? you are a fool

just ask eastern european retirees how they feel about receiving 150euros a month as a pension for working their whole lives and how they didnt care in 1948 when commies took over and how they feel about "socialists" politicians today riding audi a8 and preaching about "justing for all poor people".....

I care about those things too but I don't think that these elections will have any significant effect on the eventuality of the events you mentioned.  Perhaps they might shift the timeline and perhaps not but I don't think you could say that definitively unless you are a fortune teller.  I think this chart they posted yesterday sums it up pretty damn well.  Republican, Democrat, either way the trend is the same.  Now if a bunch of libertarians had taken a significant number of the races - that might be something to get excited about. http://www.johnwpalmer.com/100/100.pdf

And for the record I think a lot of what you're talking about is VERY likely to happen not just in my lifetime but in the near future.

Wed, 11/03/2010 - 06:40 | 695313 bobboberson

Also for the record I know all of that about Eastern Europe - I've lived there.  I'm with you I just don't think the election matters that much in the grand scheme of things.  99% of the politicians are just about as crooked as they come.  Bernanke's announcement in a few hours is a different story.  I'm much more interested in that.  Just for fun though I love it when someone that identifies themselves as a "liberal" gets crushed in an election, but the other part of me knows it's not going to change anything.

Wed, 11/03/2010 - 07:18 | 695329 ricksventures

well, it will be seen how much these elections matter in the grand scheme, perhaps obama gets reelected (if elections happen :) ) but he doesnt have a real opponent who is smart, sharp and wants to fight him till the end but stands for usa which is almost impossible in todays climate since you say usa and you are white, you already are labeled as rasists, mean whatever

lets see these issues:

bush tax cuts = more money for state to waste

immigration reform = all mexicans legal in usa

health care = see what comes out of it

but before all that, lets see the value of $ in next 12 months

lets see what chinese say to a collapsed dollar

average american starts caring when a loaf of bread will cost 100 or 1000usd

or when the gas will cost 20usd per gallon i guarantee you

I think all that bad stuff is basically inevitable... it's a question of when.  I have come to terms with the fact that the US as I knew it is doomed as a nation.  It's in the death throws.

Same shit.

Different piles.

Waste of money unless your into freak shows at the circus.

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again

Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that's all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
