More Americans Believe The Country Is In A Depression Than Growing

Tyler Durden's picture

Probably the only piece of economic news that matters today, and possibly all year, no scratch that, since the "End Of The Recession" (NBER TM) - according to Reuters: "The April 20-23 Gallup survey of 1,013 U.S. adults found that only 27 percent said the economy is growing. 29 percent said the economy is in a depression and 26 percent said it is in a recession, with another 16 percent saying it is "slowing down," Gallup said." That means that more Americans think the country is in a Depression, let alone recession, than growing. Cue crickets and a Bernanke press conference where he discusses alien abductions and 8 toed mutant Madagascar lemurs.

Said otherwise, a combined 71% believe the economy is deteriorating two years after the stock market more than doubled. That can't be right...

The health of the U.S. economy is expected to be a major issue as President Barack Obama, a Democrat, seeks re-election in 2012.

The government reported on Thursday that U.S. economic growth slowed more than expected to 1.8 percent in the first quarter of the year, as soaring food and gasoline prices drained consumer spending power.

A slowdown in first-quarter growth was acknowledged on Wednesday by the Federal Reserve, which described the U.S. economic recovery as proceeding at a "moderate pace." That was a step back from the "firmer footing" that Fed officials cited for the recovery in March.

The Gallup poll found that Democrats are the most likely to say the economy is growing. Forty-three percent of Democrats said the economy is in a recession or depression, 13 percent said it is slowing down and 42 percent said it is growing.

In other news, Welcome to the Recovery (GeithnerTM)

Ooooh, sorry but that troll only scores 3 out of 10.

Gonna have to dock you some style points for being too contrived.

I do appreciate the effort though. Next time, however, try to resist the urge to push so many buttons at once, as most zealots have a tighter focus (that's what replies are for). You also might try misspelling a few words, and use more sentence fragments. It will help you to appear legit.

I love your closing line though, that is comedy gold.

Actually America was founded of the principles of freedom of religion. All the suppressed religions fled to America to avoid suppression in Europe.

The second wave was poverty, America was a new chance to build a new life. Land of opportunity.

Any religion is dangerous, even ours. I'm a christian to, I go to church every week...

But whenever somebody does anything FOR his religion that goes against another religion they should be put under the ground.

"The great Revelation is coming"? FOR GOD SAKE MAN!! YOU'RE FREAKING ME OUT HERE!!

You should only look to christianity for the good values it contains. NOT TO REVELATIONS OR GENESIS!!

I know where people like you are going. And for that I'll give you one good advice: NEVER PICK UP THE SOAP! IT'S A TRAP!

I have no quarrel with religion of any kind.  Until it decides to quarrel with me or tell me how to live my life.  I can appreciate the benefits of religion - and I respect the qualities and disciplines of the truly religious (note I said TRULY religious).  However, there are many in the US who CLAIM to be religious but are not.  They sow the seeds of disrespect, hate, and support the killing or abolition of those they disagree with.  The last I checked, these are NOT the hallmarks of Christianity, Buddhism, or Judaism.  Islamo-fascism, perhaps.....but I know many good Muslims, too.  Not a horrible religion if (like Christianity) it is kept from the hands of those who seek to twist it toward their nefarious ends.

We are a nation founded on respect for religion, on the right to believe what you choose.  We were not founded on the principles of Christianity, though these principles were expounded upon by many of the founders.  Indeed, Publius states in the Federalist Papers that if men were angels, there would be no need for government.  How true.  Unfortunately, Publius recognized that even the truly religious were FAR from angels.  No, the nation was founded on the basis of Locke and Rousseau's teachings - those which espouse Natural Law and the Rights of Man.  These have a small basis in Western Religious thought, but were clearly NOT steeped in religion.  In fact, they sought to keep religion separate from politics.  Per Wikipedia:   Locke, writing his Letters Concerning Toleration (1689–92) in the aftermath of the European wars of religion, formulated a classic reasoning for religious tolerance. Three arguments are central: (1) Earthly judges, the state in particular, and human beings generally, cannot dependably evaluate the truth-claims of competing religious standpoints; (2) Even if they could, enforcing a single "true religion" would not have the desired effect, because belief cannot be compelled by violence; (3) Coercing religious uniformity would lead to more social disorder than allowing diversity.

So, let's get past the religious intolerance and focus on the key point.  That point is simple: we have politicians who say they are "for us" even while they take every step to be against us.  They say that they are "helping us" by extorting our money, debasing our currency, and spending on things they say we "need" without stopping to think they are things we WANT.

Just what IS it with Southerners and the warmongering mentality, anyway?

Has anyone ever noticed how disproportionate the representation of Southerners is within any branch of the US military?

I will damn that tyrant Lincoln forever --- it would have been infinitely better to have let the South secede, and let them be the festering fascist, Bible-thumping, militaristic backwater that they surely would have ended up as, instead of being the breeding ground for all those pathologies and infecting the rest of the USA with them.

Yes we still do.

"This is a sizable group outside the limelight."

Yes we are.

And unlike certain inbred populations (think the Manhattan/Conn hedge fund axis) who feed off the labor of others for their livelihood, we prefer to labor for ourselves and share any excess through charity for the less fortunate...instead of having greater and greater proportions of labor confiscated through taxation and told it is for "charity" by a central government, to be doled out to who it pleases and promotes.

Its really about keeping some portion of the population on the "plantation" is it not?...as charity cannot come through force or it ceases to be charity.

We are used to the stereotypes of the unknowing and the ignorant, but frankly I'm a little surprised that so many here were taken in by Republicants newest ID manufactured to stir this particular pot.

You don't get out much...

You're characterizing an entire region based on TV shows and other MSM negative projections. The socialist democrats never get criticized for faking their Christianity. No doubt because their core constituents naturally just assume they're atheist liars, like them. That's way more pathetic, and two bong hits shy of a valid belief system.

Turn your question around and ask why atheist blue states and blue cities are disproportionately broke and overly represented among government crime statistics and government largess. Our prisons aren't full of evangelicals. Our prisons are full of semi-feral atheists. And why, exactly, aren't blue states contributing a lot more to the national defense since they're the ones doing the most mooching anyway?

The fascists are the socialist democrats and the usual professional grievance groups are all suddenly quiet about civil liberties now that Obama is randomly patting down 6 year old girls' vaginas and routinely spying on American e-mails. Did you miss the 2009 June exitement when Obama helped Chavez in the attempted marxist overthrow of Honduras?  The liberals are classically fascist even if the complicit MSM, desperate for billions in government bailouts, won't touch these stories.

Gwar, I actually don't fundamentally disagree with you at all --- although I would take issue, perhaps, with singling out "liberals" (so-called) as being any worse than the proto-fascist, pro-big-government, warmongering Neanderthals who so often pass as "conservatives" today.

I was merely addressing the very real fact that Southerners disproportionately tend to support the US military, and militarism in general, more so than others elsewhere in the country.  Does that mean that ALL Southerners do so, or that NOBODY from other parts of the country do not?  Of course not --- that is a strawman argument.  I simply wonder why it is that a (I would say vastly) disproportionate amount of kneejerk militaristic sentiment seems to prevail south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

We have a military that is stretched thin, correct. But to say that ANY country in the world would "eat our lunch" is laughable! China just made a big deal about launching their first (refurbished) aircraft carrier; the US has 13 full nuclear carrier combat groups. Sure, the F 22 fighter was/is complete overkill, but to say it rules the skies is the understatement of the decade; the trillions we have spent on having the most sophisticated military in the world...by a large margin...is going to definitely pay off. Hell, we could sit off their coast and lob 500 cruise missles and send in 100+ drones, and not even worry about our pilots in their stealth aircraft being shot down.

Whoa whoa whoa.  I did not capitulate.  Just noted the possibility of an even larger parabola forming that could even hit 60 and would likely top in the next 5-8 trading days.

Of course this may not come to pass.  Still holding my puts.  If it does hit 60, I may go all in.  Depending on other factors of course.

In the video above he says if the world wanted to go back to a gold standard "Gold would have to be revalued to 1,000,000 per/oz".

Faber has recently said if the US wanted to go back to a gold standard they would have to revalue to 7,500/oz (I have heard this number several times before).

The $1,000,000 per oz must be predicated on the possibility all outstanding derivatives in the world economy would be put on an exchange and readjusted in relation to gold. Could be wrong, would love to hear him explain this a bit further

AM Rule #1

After World War 2, our blessed leaders, impressed by German 'organizational' skills crafted a policy of manufacture of consent. Over time these techniques moved to the economic realm in an attempt to manufacture content. Federales now risk the manufacture of contempt, for it is only a Great Depression if they say it is.

Top ten list from the archives...
