The Republican chamber will vote against the government shutdown, using a a "patriotic" excuse such as "A US government shut down would harm the security of our troops, the public image of the USA, and our finances on the long term".

So rednecks will be satisfied and thus continue to vote for the Republicans, AND the government shutdown doesn't happen, so Republican congressmen can continue to get their fat paychecks from Wall St.

Heads they win, tails you lose.

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2011 –

61 Percent of TX Immigrant Households with Children Use Welfare

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Census Bureau data show that the share of immigrant-headed households (legal and illegal) with children (under age 18) using at least one welfare program continues to be very high both in Texas and the nation as a whole.  This is partly due to the large share of immigrants with low levels of education and their resulting low incomes.  The welfare programs examined in this report are SSI (Supplemental Security Income for low income elderly and disabled), TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), WIC (Women, Infants, and Children food program), free/reduced school lunch, food stamps, Medicaid (health insurance for those with low incomes), public housing, and rent subsidies.

1995-1996: Two government shutdowns beginning on November 14, 1995, idled different functions of the federal government for various lengths of time until April of 1996. The most serious government shutdowns in the nation's history resulted from a budget impasse between Democratic President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over funding for Medicare, education, the environment and public health.

The tail risk is really skewing things right now.  There are two days worth of food in New York at any point in time.  There are at least annecdotal incidents of cannibalism in every recorded famine in human history.  Not to say that is a likely outcome, but it shows how depraved we become in a crisis.  The initial reaction to a crisis is community.  If the crisis persists it shifts entirely to self-preservation no matter what that requires.  The downside risk scenario to any disruption in densely populated areas is not pretty and its getting worse every day.

Love to see it shut down on April 15th.  No one to collect all of those Income Tax Checks.

Assuming anyone is working or makes enough to pay taxes.

And all those aircraft carriers in foreign seas? Will they return to the US harbours, and the crew sent home?

No.  They will have to do the job, the military personnel and families will just have to wait to get paid for services rendered.

A marked Poltical shift could occur just because the Gvt shutdown not because of why.

Especially if the middle class is told that they will be paying for all of the bailouts and lack of Corporate Entitlement Reform.

The GOP is serving up the "high heat" right over the plate (Nolan Ryan style) but the danger is if Obama gets wood on it the result would be a game changer.

FoxNews viewership is the best gauge for middle class voter tendencies - it already looks bad.

All the spin in the world does not fix a short or missing paycheck or the dog and pony show to ensue...

Think of all of the displaced Fireman, Policeman, Teachers and Realtors that have nothing to do now except rail against the GOP all day long...

What a perfect plan. In the month they get locked out stocks will go up coz QE3 assured and everyone will explain bad data on shutdown. Then when they all come back stole can rally like crazy coz so many jobs were created and the economy is rebounding!

Can't wait for the pitiful shutdown-charade to be ended by a real speech by Mr. Market; Au up $50 some morning, PIIGS bonds bidless, 10 yr and 30 yr yields up 3% to 1 and 2 year highs, market-trigger-closings.

But I've been looking for a speech since 2007 and the partisan credit-crowd-braniacs have created ever-clever ways to quiet him.

How could anyone care whether there's a gummit shutdown or not?

Lots of posters sound excited at the prospect, but this has happened before and not a damn thing ever changed.

Why would anyone think it's different this time?

As FZ once said, "Politics is the entertainment branch of the military-industrial complex."

This is just theatre, and although it may seem more surreal, it remains as irrelevant as ever.

This may be a fantasy, but what if the House refuses to pass any spending bills in excess of revenues?   Everything not funded gets shut down.  The worst case is people vote out the Republicans in November 2012.  Best case is that by November 2012 people see that the world did not end, that long term rates have declined due to the return of fiscal sanity in Washington, and that the private market has created more jobs than were lost in the government.  Since Republicans believe that the best case will occur, what are they waiting for?

If the government shuts down then new regulations by the agencies can not be published.  If they promised not to ropen the damn thing long enough (2020?) the business community might even consider investing again and creating jobs.

sure.  as long as you qualify, you get the check.  ask tyler!  many of these bennies are paid by the states.  with federal green stamps.  plus, goobermint employees don't qualify, i don't think.

can you imagine the up-surge in re-electability when prez0 looks right into the teleprompter and says, "No! We've already given them enough!  Food stamps only for them! *snap*!" ???

after the election, he can do any fukin thing he wants to, again, of course...

Tough questions nobody is asking.

1) If the govt shuts down, can they still award no-bid military contracts so contractors can hire Afghan dancing boys?

2) If we cut military spending, how will we be able to successfully fashion body-part trophies from civilians' mangled bodies in Afghanistan?

3) If we don't continue the War on Drugs, how else are we going to keep our privatized prisons full in order to create shareholder value?

4) If we give the Federal Reserve less control, how will we be able to buoy the international wealth-siphoning banking cartel?

locally, much of our stuff goes to feed animals, especially 1-3 hog "operations" on small farmettes, and goats, and whatever else works.

i have personally spent more than one evening helping friends separate hostess sno-balls, cup cakes, & the whole damned line from the plastic and packaging and tossing the goodies into the pig pen, while upwind, of course.  entire pick-up loads at a time!

those animals were happier than pigs in shit!  trust me.

actually,... they were pigs in shit...

Maybe a gridlock is a good thing as incompetents doing nothing is better than they doing something and making the situation worse.

The increase in debt ceiling will encourage the U.S. to borrow more money from the world which the likes of Geithner and Bernanke will then distribute it to their buddies, the bankers and the rich corporations / individuals.

They would turn around and use the money to gamble in stocks, commodities and currencies resulting in millions of people pushed below the poverty line as they would not be able to afford even the basic necessities of live needed to exist.
