More Embarrassment For Congressional Black Caucus After Maxine Waters Joins Rangel In Alleged Ethics Breaches

Tyler Durden's picture

After Charlie Rangel was humiliated recently by the Congressional Ethics Panel, and faces ethics charges that included failure to disclose assets and income, nonpayment
of taxes and doing legislative favors for donors to a college center
named after him, today we learn that another democrat, prominent member of the Financial Services Committee, and the funniest Ben and Tim interrogator by a mile, Maxine Waters, is about to face an ethics trial herself, dealing a huge reputational blow to the Congressional Black Caucus, where it now appears pretty much everyone in a position of power had been allegedly abusing their privilege for years. Of course, this means the other 358 members of Congress are perfectly honest and clean. Then again, perhaps it is not a bad thing that Maxine will soon be gone from the FSA, as her repeated questioning of Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke was a farce of such moronic magnitude, that it actually made the Fed chairman look good during Q&A (we dare you to watch the clip below with a straight face). Either way, it will be amusing to watch all of Maxine's faux indignation now that she will be on the receiving end of questioning that should be at least a little smarter than her own.

More from NPR:

A second House Democrat, Rep. Maxine Waters of California, could be facing an ethics trial this fall, further complicating the midterm election outlook for the party as it battles to hold onto its majority.

People familiar with the investigation, who were not authorized to be quoted about unannounced charges, say the allegations could be announced next week. The House ethics committee declined Friday to make any public statement on the matter.

Waters, 71, has been under investigation for a possible conflict of interest involving a bank that was seeking federal aid. Her husband owned stock in the bank and had served on its board.

Both Waters and Rangel are prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the trials would be an embarrassment for the group. Dual ethics trials would also be a major political liability for Democrats, forcing them to defend their party's ethical conduct while trying to hold on to their House majority.

While Rangel is a former chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, Waters is a prominent member of the Financial Services Committee.

Waters came under scrutiny after former Treasury Department officials said she helped arrange a meeting between regulators and executives at Boston-based OneUnited Bank without mentioning her husband's financial ties to the institution.

Her husband, Sidney Williams, held at least $250,000 in the bank's stock and previously had served on its board. Waters' spokesman has said Williams was no longer on the board when the meeting was arranged.

Waters has said the National Bankers Association, a trade group, requested the meeting. She defended her role in assisting minority-owned banks in the midst of the nation's financial meltdown and dismissed suggestions she used her influence to steer government aid to the bank.

she's 71 ...?

Just watched Greenspan, Bloomberg and Rendell on Meet the Press.

Bloomberg: solution to immigration is biometric ID cards for all and citizenship for current undocumented workers if they learn english and history...financial reform is a lobbyist's and lawyer's dream.

Greenspan: If house prices go down we'll get a double dip...Best thing for the economy is higher equity prices, people underestimate how important the Dow is. Just below current house price levels is a large pool of home owners who will be pushed into foreclosure if prices continue to fall.

Rendell: We'll hold the House and the Senate...the GOP are pro BP .

This comment from Greenspan is very important and is akin to President Obama making the call that stocks look cheap and should be bought. That's all you need to know folks, you are being tangentially asked to go long; 'they' will try everything humanly possible to see higher equity prices. Barring a catastrophe of some nature, this market is headed higher. Go short at your own risk; you'll probably get decimated. However, go long at your own risk, too, because a black swan event will not come with an advanced notice.

When the DOW underperforms, change the composition. AIG anyone? I have a hard time not barking insults when it is mentioned to be that the DOW is 10k. It is a distraction. Anyways, the ologopoly own the equities. How the fuck does that impact some 8$/hr family?

Agreed, it doesn't matter to the $8/hr family. But it is a good way to massage the psychology of the masses. I keep on hearing, ad nauseam, the "look the market is rising; hence, the economy must be improving" meme from my friends. That's all that matters to most of them and thus the DOW has to move higher. Without that there will be restlessness among the masses, which has to be avoided at all costs. That's the goal and attempts will be made to reach that goal, come hell or high water.

Riddle me this, Einstein....if what you say is true, why is the Dow 4,000 points below it's high and not at 20K or 25K?

I'll tell you why.  Because even though the plan may be to pump equities, they HAVE FAILED to do so.  Nobody is buying stocks.  It's just a matter of time before they give up.  Why?  Because the bond market will MAKE THEM GIVE UP.  Back to school chief.  I don't make decisions based on what they're saying on CNBS.

Who said anything about they will be successful with their attempts. Of course, they will fail, eventually, because of the bond market or otherwise. All I am saying is multiple attempts will be made to take the market higher, either just to placate the masses or until their agenda has been met. When will they finally give up? Nobody knows. It could be years from now or tomorrow. Play it at your own risk. I will only join the party when there is blood on the streets - to use an overly used cliche. And there will be blood on the streets, but I can wait. I have enough patience to wait.

Sorry to disappoint you Nikki, but the white skinned congressmen, especially the hebrew subspecies, steals larger.  No self respecting whitey would stoop to steal less than millions and in any event, they would have bought off the ethics (sic) panel. Think Madoff and friends...

ruskki, I'm not disappointed or under any delusion that fair skinned politicians are less corrupt. The visible majority are brazenly corrupt, the rest in denial of how corrupted they are by their silent acceptance.

Madoff was a cannibal and as such had to be banished.

Refering to the Jewish people as a subspecies was uncalled for. They are the farmers and we are the hand licking cows, our dark skinned brothers too. Their 2% of the population pulls all the strings of finance, justice, media, and government agencies. Nothing can be done about it as almost all are in denial that a conspiracy exists in plain site.

Again and again I will rant that these Congressional Ethnic Caucuses are illegal and discriminatory.....violating the very anti-discrimination laws the government created decades ago. The black and hispanic caucuses use these bureaucratic legislative inventions as an ethnically divisive bully pulpit. Both the subprime lending disaster and the lack of any immigration reform sanity can be directly attributed to the work of both. The members of these groups never have to defend their illegal existence because they simply go unchallenged.

Dear Maxine,

Blasphemy against Goldman Sachs, er,...against God is a mortal sin that must be punished. God works in mysterious ways. We do God's work.

No hard feelings. If you repent and grovel before Goldman Sachs, er,...before God, we could find a place for you in our Ethics office or our new FinReg Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.

Sincerely,

The Almighty Lord Blankfein

Going to join me Thursday August 12 to pull $500 from the ATM?

Other ideas to VI's call to arms are welcome.

Time for each of us to do something.

I'll hand that to the Tea Party, it organized itself, at least the April 15th 2009 one I went to.

"Going to join me Thursday August 12 to pull $500 from the ATM?"

Yes.  DoChen, some thoughts regarding getting something organized were posted on the "crop circle" thread.  We need a dedicated forum, and bulletin board. Need to track participant numbers and be able to communicate with each other.  where is the incubation room.

"keep it rolling"

PS - if you have time, read through the thread.  some good stuff added after you left.

Betcha after such exemplary questioning of Bennie the Red, Timmy Two Hands, et.al, she'll now answer the questions posed to her; "I forgot."
No, it'll be; "I never knew that!"
And when confronted with; "But you asked..."
She'll respond, "Yeah, but I didn't know anything about it."
