Umm, so in other words it's probably a full melt down on #2, 3 and 4 but they're going to break it to us gently?

What's important here is that the disclosure isn't coming from the Japanese. I wonder how much of this is Japan's way of saving face by not forcing them to initially disclose what might be considered the worst case scenario. And how much of it is the EU trying to clue in their own citizens and ex-pats who live in Japan that they might wish to beat a hasty retreat to say.....err....home?

Don't forget to take those PMs with you folks when you leave Japan. Don't worry about the fiat, we can always print more.

So sad if instead of just telling how it is, they're taking it as a backdoor way to spread the bad news.

If this is truly is the disaster it's shaping up to be it's so sad that saving face is more important than saving lives. I thought saving face was about pride and honor, how much pride will there be after the fact if a cloud of secrecy made the situation that much worse.

Correction to my comment above. I meant to type US instead of EU. My bad.

I'm only speculating about saving face. But the practice of saving face has a long tradition in Japan and the US for that matter.

Thats BS. there is no way that the US government wasn't assessing the situation and the satellite imagery from the get go. I don't even remotely have a degree in this shit, but when you compare the tsumani wave height data for that area alone, with where and what was hit, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see this is going to go very wrong, its only a matter of how badly it will go wrong.

Of course, I live about 30 mi from a nuclear plant that nearly went red over mere lawn clippings, cattails and weeds that got smushed into some cooling vents, so maybe i'm a bit sensitive.

It really is ashame, the whole thing.

Actually, the blackout started yesterday - Article 15 bitches.  Most of the 'new' information seems to be coming from other governments' officials and private nuclear companies that are not located in Japan.

Is it true there are seven fuel pools, a spent fuel pool for each reactor and a 7th in a different building?

Is it possible the 7th pool, if it exists, is used for an inventory of fresh fuel rods destined for eventual placement in the reactors?

Wed, 03/16/2011 - 11:34 | 1060804 Cognitive Dissonance
Cognitive Dissonance's picture

The 7th spent fuel pool is a "common" pool that is used as overflow for the other 6 and also possibly as a staging area. Reportedly the 7th pool is twice the size of any of the other 6 spent fuel pools. It is/was located at ground level and was inundated by the tsunami. It is reportedly damaged, but we have heard nothing about it to this point. I suspect we eventually will if or when that potential problem is realized.

BIG pool/separate bldg - can be found on slide # (can't remember) here:

http://www-ns.iaea.org/downloads/rw/conferences/spentfuel2010/sessions/s...

It might be one of those buildings off to the left of the reactors as one views the site from the ocean ... don't know for certain.

I asked that in another thread and the answer seems to be as you surmise.

I still wonder how the H2 explosions in 1 and - was it 3 - would have affected those spent pools well before those we heard about in 4.

Looks like events on the ground are about to overtake accurate summaries.

I am not one to pray much, but this seems to be an exception.

What's with the flight to safety run to the Japanese Yen?

Wed, 03/16/2011 - 11:38 | 1060829 reachsb
reachsb's picture

I was really perplexed by the flight to safety into the yen last week (at the onset of this crisis). If the current crisis escalates, the entire island may need to be evacuated. What's not being discussed in the MSM is the fact that one of the reactors (#3) at Fukushima uses MOX fuel (MOX fuel emits higher gamma radiation and much higher neutron radiation than uranium fuel).

"This power plant meltdown can be 2 MILLION times Worse than Chernobyl!  This could make the whole country of Japan uninhabitable, besides being carried around the world!"

I Wonder why the US isn't getting its NEST agency involved in this super-critical emergency?

we're told when King Edward III defaulted on his loan to the bankstes in Venice, it caused the collapse of the global financial system in 1345.

historians say the banks were bankrupt since the 1330's but were zombie banks.  The Vencian banks rigged the price of gold and silver to take out the Florentine Banks.

Am wondering now if Japan defaults on any of it's debts, will that be cause of global financial collapse.  Sort of a King Edward III moment.

"What happens in a meltdown?  Any nuke scientists here?"

Only a BA in physics so not a scientist but it is my understanding that in a meltdown the fuel rods lose their position, fuse together, the increased mass starts to develop heat at about 700 degrees C, the pile of fusing metal burns its way through the containment and if it ever gets to water the water turning to steam at those temperatures is explosive and can cause a rather large explosion blowing the pile of fused metal all over the place in small enough chunks where it doesn't have the mass to develop heat as fast but it just poisions everything for a very long time.  The first 24 days are the worst as the iodine isotopes burn off.  I hope they are talking about some form of minor disaster and not a full meltdown.
