Must See: TEPCO Releases Video From Unmanned Helicopter Drones Above Fukushima As Robots Are Finally Used In Restoration Effort

Tyler Durden's picture

On Friday, April 15, TEPCO released what is the most conclusive video of the devastation at Fukushima. After watching these three clips we fail to see how even the most optimistic of individuals see the situation as resolving with anything but entombment, which however judging by the urgency in Japan's actions will be the first even on the agenda...in 2015. In other Fukushima news, we learn that after declining for a few days, the seawater around the reactor has once again seen a surge in radioactivity (Kyodo), that fuel rods have melted through not one, not two, but all three active reactors at Fukushima, but not to panic: all is well as long as these are cooled down, by the same water that will eventually seep into the ocean of into the groundwater considering the cooling system is destroyed beyond repair (Japan Times), that TEPCO itself, following weeks of denials, will not only be nationalized but most likely bankrupted eventually as a push to complete the liberalization of Japan's power industry (Asahi), but this won't happen before TEPCO drags down the Nikkei: Reuters reports that as part of funding its reconstruction efforts, the virtually insolvent utility will be forced to liquidate up to its entire stake ($2.2 billion) in telecom giant KDDI, potentially setting off a selling waterfall across various asset classes. Elsewhere, now that Japan will have no choice but to contend with rolling blackouts indefinitely, the country's energy needs will be increasingly reliant on Russia's goodwill, which now is the white knight "energetic" protector of not only Europe, but Japan (Yomiuri). Lastly, also from Yomiuri is this brief summary of just how majorly impacted Q2 GDP will be (read inventory liquidations following supply chain disruptions) following the Japan earthquake.

And exactly a month after we asked why on earth is Fukushima not "crawling with iRobots armed with cameras", the powers that be finally enacted this most glaringly obvious fix to prevent the gratuitous waste of human life.

Nah, some spackle and a fresh coat of paint and it'll be gooder than new! Some new landscaping might help with curb appeal for resale value...

Here is some good info on the reliability of information released about TMI. After listening to how the TMI data was manipulated/skewed/modified/changed/hidden (take your pick), then make your own assesment on what they are telling you about Fukushima.

Now here is what Tepco is saying about the radiation inside the reactor buildings.

10 to 49 millisieverts per hour in the No.1 building

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/18_13.html?play

or do we believe this reading

between the double doors of those reactor buildings was 270 millisieverts in the Number One reactor

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/18_03.html

Mr. Gundersen has clearly shown how the location of radiation monitors just slightly off center from the main flow of radiation can have a drastic affect on the level of detection. The two reports from NHK, on the same day, certainly back this clain by Mr. Gundersen.

So the question we all want to know is how much is actually escaping and not the readings inside the buildings. I personally do not believe those readings from inside the reactor building anyway, but you can take that with a grain of salt. The data so far released does not support readings that low and water leaking has readings higher.

Are we to assume radiation levels have dropped that much due to heli drops and fire/concrete truck pumps? They claim radiation monitoring equipment burning out and in almost the same paragraph clain lowering levels? Sorry Tepco but I'm calling bullshit. Show me your hand and show us all the real data.

I lived 15 miles south of TMI during all this and the old man worked at Harrisburg Int'l. We thought he was overreacting because he shipped us off to a relative's even though the TV was saying 'No big deal...everything's fine...". Guess he knew that you couldn't trust people in charge. Took me into my 30's to start paying attention to how screwed up gov't and corporations were.  Watched the TMI presentation by Gunderson and my skin started to crawl...

We believe whatever reading is high enough to absolutely preclude a human running in there with a camera and counter, taking a one minute look around, and running out again. Because if that was possible within the 250 milliSv current exposure 'safety' limit, they'd have done it. Rather than wait weeks to obtain some robots that can't even cope with a bit of rubble on the floor.

Which means I don't believe EITHER figure quoted. Both are way too low. That '270 milliSv' is presumably 'per hour', which means a few minutes would be acceptable. Did they leave off the time units in the original story? I can't recall. If they did, it's a bit like TEPCO's other favorite trick of 'misplacing' the decimal point. 270 mSv per WHAT? Per second maybe?

FUBARshima...and noone I associate with is even remotely aware that this is still a major disaster playing out daily. Of course most of those same people fish, swim, and eat GOM seafood thinking that all's well. When I mention the incident where a freighter spilled oil into Tampa Bay and we were told everything was A-OK only to have a storm push more oil up on shore the following year, I just get blank stares...I wonder if the Japanese fish will pass the 'sniff' test?

I might believe they have the best interests of the taxpayers at heart.  Currently, it just looks like a bank arb play on their litigation expense which the politicians are employing to prolong the debt ponzi.

same position experienced with a dour sailor's chord as living thread feels like insult being added to injury... there lies man's illusion of freedom. If we die grasping for gold we feel life was exciting while it lasted. If we die retching from cold we feel cheated before and after...to the same extent, double whammied.

I am not totally clueless but it is pretty complex. The issues I see discussed in almost every thread are: inflation/hyperinflation/deflation, the fed, Goldmann Sachs, Silver and Gold, other commodities, the EU and the default of Portugal at the hands of the Finns, the crisis in Japan, JP Morgan, something that I think starts.
