The New Model?

Tyler Durden's picture

It seems 1-2's and Marla's post earlier could not have come at a more opportune time. In a presentation by Andrew Gluck of Advisor Products, the author touches on some starkly comparable points (and, usefully, those with acute ADHD may find this presentation a tad more palatable, hehe, just kidding Marla) in the context of the epic paradigm shift occurring in the media world. Zero Hedge explicitly agrees that while the course of new media is still very much uncharted, the inherent conflicts of interest at the nexus of mainstream media and its providers of funding (not to mention bloated leverage and CDS levels in the 20pts upfront even in these artificially tight times), will make the survival of legacy media products increasingly more impossible.

Ok, today has convinced me to register.  I was really impressed with 1-2 and Marla's post earlier.  I'm hooked again.

On one hand, the product being sold here is kind of weird, but it is a victory for ZH to be considered a prime example of the new media.

I sort of know this guy and know his target customer a lot better.  Glucks firm serves independent Financial Advisors... folks who are with Broker Dealers and Registered Investment Advisors unaffiliated with investment banks.

These folks have taken the red pill and been unplugged from the product wire, and the bullshit "research" that supports it, but now they've got to figure out their own way to learn about the way things really are.  They are free to learn the truth, but a lot of them need a bit of help organizing the data that's available.  Trying to run an independent financial services firm in competition with giants is sort of time consuming, especially when the giants are trying to burn down the whole world.

Many Financial Advisors aren't terribly web savvy and are just now learning that MSM can't be trusted.  The idea that these crazy "web people" wearing the skins of movie characters might have something useful to say is horrifyingly new.

I have to admit it's a bit of a paradox, this is the exact same reason I stopped trusting/using/believing the BS advisors/brokers pushed on me.  Shouldn't we be buying the book, not the press when it comes to companies/commodities?  It may be argued that the MSM can push prices how they see fit, but it cannot be denied the temporary repreive that it provides....

I can happily say the skills I've learned perhaps by ignoring MSM and pursuing logical constructs has benefitted me immensely.  I'm glad to see ZI, is being recongnized for it's pursuit of the truth, but I do have some issues with the organic ZI reporting mechanism.

*shrug*

A lot of folks need the help.  Like any service providers, results may vary.  However, many do a good job.  Particularly in the independent space a lot of them offer services such as financial planning in conjunction with their securities work.  This can help people with education, tax, and estate issues along with the regular portfolio building service.

I tend to agree with Nick Murray on one key point - the real value of a financial advisor is behavioral modification.  Most people can't be good traders because they can't stay in the right psychological mode.  Financial Advisors take this burden from people by creating an investing discipline... and it's not always the old "it only goes up"  discipline.  (Though Murray himself espouses it, generally on the payroll of annuity providers.)

Several problems with the crop of financial advisors:

1. Ethics, or lack thereof.

2. Not the experts you think they are.

But, hey, to each his own.

It is just a matter of time before the 'big hammer' comes down on the blogosphere. They won't outright kill it: they'll just fill it with so much bs, like the msm, that it will be hard to distinguish reality from fiction. It is hard, and yet very easy, to understand how the real movers and shakers missed the power of the internet.

Btw, how have you not gotten a cease and desist from 20th Century Fox?

Reading the report I just realized how blatantly you're misappropriating.

Should you get that C&D though I would get in touch with Palahniuk. He's just maybe cool enough to let you have the character for this limited purpose.

If sued he'd be pretty easy to catch.

Parody's not really applicable (it's usually a defense to slander and libel) and he can't claim fair use because he's wholly misappropriating the character(s). Plus, the fact that there are ads on the site would cut very strongly against him.

Indeed, you're missing the point. Probably there was a reason why the guy chose Tyler Durden as a nickname. Project Mayhem can be executed even without Tyler or with Tyler opposing Project Mayhem, and that's what it is for MSM - one step closer to the informational equilibrium. Watch the film if you didn't.

Listen, this is huge. Blog sites currently are frequented by first adopters, ahead of the curve. If the "device" proves to be a winner, a hit, the first adopters spread the word. But, first adopters are generally small in number, word gets around slowly. But ( and I hate to use the term, but will, )there comes a tipping point where all of a sudden word gets out to the masses.

In this case, the tipping point was recognition by the media that is being replaced, they spread the word, what irony. Newspapers are already dead and buried; Facebook et al are fine and dandy, but have no useful content.

With MSM, they talk their book, ad nauseum, under the guise of impartial news. The sheeple may slowly be waking up, since finally there are alternatives. And alternatives that are so much better, beyond content:

- real-time and past-time ( archives )

- content that is researchable, verifiable, and interactive and hence arguable. This is of course the best aspect. And of course we get to say fuck.

- many, many sites and sources, and growing daily. And, these sources provide links ot each other, quote each other- instead of slicing and berating the competition, its embraced. Unless it's bullshit, then it is called out as such.

Anyway, great job, the bastards are getting scared, the cockroachs are dashing for cover, the light came on.

Diller Calls Free Web Content a ‘Myth, Joins Refrain (Update1)

By Brett Pulley and Andy Fixmer

July 24 (Bloomberg) -- Barry Diller, chairman and chief executive officer of IAC/InterActiveCorp, said Web users will have to pay for what they watch and use, joining the refrain of media moguls who say an era of free Internet content is ending.

“It is not free, and is not going to be,” Diller said today at the Fortune Brainstorm conference in Pasadena, California.
