Nigaz: The Return

We know this is the one you have all been waiting for. Ever since we first reported on the Nigaz JV, our proverbial phones would have been ringing off the hook, of course, if we had any listed phone numbers. The upside - many sleepless nights at the NSA...

So we are considering it. In the meantime, some late morning amusement courtesy of the Daily Mail. Little commentary is needed... suffice it to say "Nigerians No Nigaz" is likely soon to eclipse "Dennis Kneale Idiot" as the most popular rising term in Google:

When a $2.5billion international venture is being planned you might expect there to be hours of debate over what to call it.

Yet branding is not the forte of some companies, it seems.

Russian Energy giant Gazprom has inadvertently walked into a racism row with the announcement of its joint venture in Nigeria - Nigaz.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Nigerian counterpart Umaru Yar'Adua last week agreed the deal to build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations in Africa's most populous nation.

The name is meant to be an amalgamation of 'Nigeria' and 'Gazprom', pronounced 'nye-gaz', but it can be read phonetically as an offensive term for those of black African origin.

'How more derogatory can it be. Let's join forces in making our government rename this,' said the creator of 'Nigerians No Nigaz', a group on Facebook.

Many comments on the blunder were from white bloggers.

But others mocked the mistake - one African-American suggested a playlist of songs from U.S. hip-hop artists for the Nigaz launch party.

One Nigerian in Lagos said: 'White people are making too much of this.

'As long as the Russians pay us, they can call it what they like.'

No, having had an ex-Mother-in-law from Georgia (the US Georgia), I can tell you straight away that the true racist version of the term is spelled N-I-G-G-U-Z-Z and is pronounced phonetically.

Nigaz should not be considered offensive.

Not that real g-stars bother with things like spelling and/or grammar, does anyone else appreciate the humorosity of this thread? Overeducated people with too much time trying to pin the correct spelling on an obvious misspelling that is causing controvery because of the choice of name for a Russian-African petroleum deal that was named by someone who might not even speak English??? :D

In Mandarin, the word for "that" is EXACTLY *phonetically* pronounced "nigga" and it is used all the time in daily conversation. Believe me, I know firsthand that has caused problems for Chinese people in the US, but I don't think anyone is going to change the Chinese language anytime soon.

BTW - this is in jest, I like this thread enough to detract from all of the things I should be doing right now

Why does anyone actually care about this? What a waste of time. Let the Russians and the Nigerians have their fun! Sure, I had a chuckle thinking of a company called Nigaz. But like that commenter on the BBC said, are we going to change the name of PADI now out of consideration for the Irish? Nigeria + Gazprom. End of Story. :-)
