Nikkei Flash Crash - Futures Plummet 16% As All Hell Breaks Loose In Japan

Tyler Durden's picture

All hell is currently breaking loose following an explosion at reactor #2 and a another hydrogen explosion at reactor #4 per Kyodo, leading to a 16% drop in Nikkei futures as blind panic grips Japan. Kyodo essentially confirms there was a reactor meltdown as radiation levels at Fukushima 3 are now 400 times legal levels. And topping it all Japan's warning that all people within 30 kilometers from Fukushima should stay indoors and that the radioactive winds may reach Tokyo in as little as 8-10 hours. The BOJ has just intervened to prevent the yen from surging, as the following chart shows. Our prayers are with the people of Japan.

Tepco was down 24%, or 500 points, before a circuit breaker was invoked.

We hope our Japanese readers took our advice earlier to evacuate. If not, this is the area that needs to be vacated right now.

The absolutely worst news: NHK saying radiation up to 400mSv at Reactor #3, 100mSv at Reactor #1...That's milli... not micro, or 250 times the maximum reported prior number. Alas, we believe this means the cores have melted.

Why all this cohesion now?  Wasn't too many articles ago that I was being reamed for chastising a comment about the inanity of "making money on this disaster".   I guess it finally had to come to this stage of stress.   Finally.  Sadly.

[Yea I guess im not understanding why the PM's are diving too??]---AZSovreign

Hi Sovreign. I'm not a pro, but I'll give you my take on it.

This happens a lot. When stocks are tumbling, investors who bought/hold stock on margin(borrowing $ from their broker) are required by their brokers to either sell their plummeting stocks or put up more of their own money to keep their stocks (a "margin call").

Many of these same investors also own PM stocks/ETFs, an out-performing asset class of late. What happens? The investor decides to sell off some of their profitable PM investments in order to raise money to keep their plummeting stocks.

In a nutshell, you take profits from your hot assets in order to keep the ones that suck. (Believing, of course, that your sucky assets today are worth keeping in the long run.)

Hence, PMs are under selling pressure.

Hope that helps.

AZ, keep this in mind. This is very important. The stockmarket is so completely manipulated by the Fed that determining cause/affect is now impossible. The "market" in stockmarket is gone.

Judging from market movement, I'd venture to say the Fed is controlling 70-80% of market action. 20-30% of the time, the market slips out of the Fed's control.

I've noticed a lot of posters with "AZ" in their ZHedge name. Reporting in from Arizona?

Well not really. It's just that now the 'cause' mostly relates to the motivations of the FED - or rather the people the FED works for. Which have nothing to do with economics. Someone should run a course 'Psychology of the Elites 101'.

And so we arrive at the door of "the worst possible case".

I will repeat what I said yesterday : I believe this will be the worst nuclear disaster in the history of mankind. And it still may not be over yet, more reactors may blow in Japan, and the radiation may spew for days, weeks or even months, years.

Think GoM : the leak is just the start, capping it is the hard part. It killed many Russians at Chernobyl, and I think it'll kill a lot of Japanese too before the end. I have not heard of a credible estimated spread of radiation, worldwide, but I doubt it's pretty.

Judging the safety of nuclear power by this accident is like judging car safety by a single accident by a drunk person driving his pre-Castro car while drunk and after having a seizure.

That reactor is from the old design that the US, Japan, and others have been stuck with due to overbearing regulation that has prevented newer, much safer designs from coming on line (like pebble bed reactors, which are literally impossible to have a melt down with, even when piled up in a big pile with no water).

We will have unrestricted nuclear power, or we will have systemic collapse.

I enjoy your postings, T, but the problem is that we've already been promised no more Chernobyls.

It couldn't happen here, etc, it was the fault of the Russian designs, etc.

In retrospect, it was obvious that a tsunami would follow a major quake. But apparently the Fukushima engineers didn't consider that 'remote' possibility.

Hats off to engineers in general, but frankly they've screwed the pooch on nuclear too many times now. No earthquake-prone country with democracy is going to be able to commission more of these things. The pols who signed the deals would be lynched.

I think his point was that we are in this situation because the industry has generally not been allowed to advance/upgrade because of previous accidents. I have no doubt there is a fair bit of stupid involved in this one as well. There is always politics. If purely science/engineering, we would be on thorium MSRs by now, have electrified highways, and oil dependancy would be in the rear view mirror.

But that is not our present reality.

Regardless, if nuclear is removed from the energy picture, folks might want to get used to the whole concept of horse drawn buggies, as energy is the basis for modern society. Without nuclear, we are just left with fossil fuels which already provide far too much of the energy pie and already threaten to blow the wheels off the economy. If you you just wish to run on renewables, which mankind did pretty much until the industrial revolution, I suggest you get an axe and start on that tree over there. It will be cold soon, so don't piss around.

Oh, come on.  You either increase output (no longer looks possible, forget the quibbling over source) or you reduce consumption.

As a species we start trying to reduce consumption or we see a massive die-off.  Biological systems presented with new inputs tend to overshoot sustainable population levels.  Always.  It balances out through catastrophe.  We have brains and have a chance of out-thinking the biology, but it hasn't looked good over the past 50 years.

Nukes?  Oil?  Somehow we're going to find a way to provide similar energy levels to the other 90% of the global population that've been exhausting our output when provided to 10% of the global population?

Yeah, sure.  Deus ex machina, babe.  It's ALL good.

One magnitude 9 quake, and all the nuclear feelgood hype is in ruins.

But we still haven't had a major meteorite strike, or supervolcano eruption. Give it time. This is the key point with nuclear fission power plants. Even assuming humanly impossible engineering perfection, The Universe is going to fuck them right up now and then.

So it's taken 30 years before the first natural disaster induced nuclear nightmare. So what? 30 years is nothing compared to many of the really horrible radionucleotide half-lives. It's only been hubris that allowed the nuclear industry to claim 30 years of (not so) 'cheap' electricity was worth the risk of hundreds of thousands of years of human death and misery.

But now that stupidity is over, because now we have videos of exploding nuclear plants. Plants plural, going off like popcorn one after another. Just to underline the point.

Also, I suspect the fat red pen underlining we are to be given has barely begun.

1.  That sounds like BS.

2.  So you're saying that no reactors should be allowed except on bedrock.  That part I am OK with.  If there are any more.

I vote for emtombment and whatever else helps.

But the Chernobyl fire was exposed to the sky after the explosion so they could drop that material right on the contents of the destroyed reactor and fire. That might not be the case here, at least (hopefully) not yet.

About 1,500 tons of spent fuel may be in the fuel storage basins on the top floor of the reactors, exposed to the atmosphere when the pool boils dry.

The helicopter crashed because the crew inside recieved a leathal dose of radiation when they were hovering over it.  I heard they recieved the Order of Lenin for it.

They were cooked in the helicopter and were dead before they hit the ground.

No, you're combining two different stories. One heli clipped crane cables with it's blades, and crashed. I have a copy of the film of it. Other crews were indeed killed rapidly by high radiation, as were most of the initial responding firefighters.

There are fields near Chernobyl full of the fire trucks, armored vehicles, helicopters an so on, that are too hot to go anywhere near, even today. Pictures of those too.

Read up on the new sarcophagus that will, in 2013 entomb the ruined reactor at Chernobyl. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Safe_Confinement

Admittedly, I know little about nuclear diaster containment, but I do hope that someone is attempting to think middle-term on this, whatever that entails. I may be naive on the subject, but it seems to me that the seawater solution is a temporary fix that is slowing (every minute is precious in a potential evac scenario) a quickly worsening situation.

No, entombment is the word.  One entombs in a sarcophogus.  That goes back to ancient Egypt.  There are other reactors besides Chernobyl that have used this technique.

In hindsight absolutely.  Just like we should be closing down any West coast ocean exposed Nuke stations here until the back-up generators are made waterproof.  Will we???  It's a travesty what happened.  Everythig did well through the quake everything performed according to plan.  But the tsunami killed the back-up power and that did it.  They hadn't planned for the combination punch.

Do you mean travesty or trajedy? A travesty is "a literary or artistic burlesque of a serious work or subject, characterized by grotesque or ludicrous incongruity of style, treatment or subject matter." Although this is stranger than fiction, and uglier than some art I have seen, it is neither. The definition of a tragedy.

Everyone is selling equities and flooding into JGB's driving yields even further down than many thought possible. Kyle Bass has got to be crying in his beer tonight as 10 year yields hit 1.18 in the midst of massive intervention by the BOJ to prevent a run-up in the Yen.

But I think a huge whipsaw is coming to the Yen that will blow people's minds.  I hope the BOJ is buying lots of dollars because they're going to need them as hedgies and other foreign investors begin to liquidate their JGB's.  Just watch as yields and the Yen start running the other way.

Why are you angry? I merely suggest (in a colorful fashion) that you help redress the balance by ceasing to be part of the problem. I think you'd be better off, seeing as you have the emotional capacity of a carrot in even suggesting that this was something that was inflicted upon the Japanese people because they deserved it. If you truly care about how all life and consciousness is connected, you would have a different response towards those who have already died, and those who may yet die from the events now transpiring.

Otherwise, you're just a sanctimonious little prick of a troll.
