Nikkei Flash Crash - Futures Plummet 16% As All Hell Breaks Loose In Japan
All hell is currently breaking loose following an explosion at reactor #2 and a another hydrogen explosion at reactor #4 per Kyodo, leading to a 16% drop in Nikkei futures as blind panic grips Japan. Kyodo essentially confirms there was a reactor meltdown as radiation levels at Fukushima 3 are now 400 times legal levels. And topping it all Japan's warning that all people within 30 kilometers from Fukushima should stay indoors and that the radioactive winds may reach Tokyo in as little as 8-10 hours. The BOJ has just intervened to prevent the yen from surging, as the following chart shows. Our prayers are with the people of Japan.

Tepco was down 24%, or 500 points, before a circuit breaker was invoked.

We hope our Japanese readers took our advice earlier to evacuate. If not, this is the area that needs to be vacated right now.
The absolutely worst news: NHK saying radiation up to 400mSv at Reactor #3, 100mSv at Reactor #1...That's milli... not micro, or 250 times the maximum reported prior number. Alas, we believe this means the cores have melted.

I doubt anyone will be doing skits like that for a while.
That was funny. I think they bought the Fukn Dip. Yup.
Japan is in my thoughts and prayers, no one deserves what is coming if this is all true.
Surreal.
I hope and pray for the best.
I often jest to keep a positive frame of mind but this is something different.
My prayers are with the people of Japan.
+ 1000
My prayers are too.
Why all this cohesion now? Wasn't too many articles ago that I was being reamed for chastising a comment about the inanity of "making money on this disaster". I guess it finally had to come to this stage of stress. Finally. Sadly.
Morality and greed get all jumbled up until Oh My God fear comes in and straightens everything out. Perspective is a fine art acquired, usually through severe stress, rather than developed or possessed from birth.
WOW!
As an atheist, sending my prayers does not mean much, but I do sincerely send my best wishes and hope japan has a speedy recovery with as little damage as possible.
MachoMan--the ancient Greek word for "prayer" is like our word "attention" --so in my belief, good wishes and hope are prayers!!!
we can concur on this

shit. this is the darkest black swan event.
Statistically just has to be near the biggest cities in the world that the most incredibly fucked up shit happens. Damn here's hoping for a lucky break from the weather. I know the NYC banksters lucked out after 9/11 a decade back. Most of the dust cloud headed for Brooklyn.
The japan Airports will be busy flying people out of there... a mad rush...
yes, there were interviews at chicago airports and folks mentioned leaving cos of the radiation.
So who stays in Tokyo? Fuck that! Sayonara...

may the lord god who made this great planet have mercies on the japanese....
Gold down even in Yen, that's seriously fucked up.
Margin calls. I've been waiting for something like it. Never would have guessed this. Strong hands.
Sure, but running from gold into government bonds and other assorted bank credit?
Completely fucked up, though it would be interesting to see how close Yen gold futures are to backwardation.
Yea I guess im not understanding why the PM's are diving too?? I am a noob when it comes to all of the financials.
Nevermind feel like an idiot, PM's selling off to cover margins duh I get it.
Yeah but whosever is margin account is getting the proceeds isn't buying gold. Rather the 'safe' debt of the government or bank deposits, which are probably invested in government debt anyhow.
Shows how unhinged from reality things are, or is everyone just incredibly patriotic? Rushing to lend their gold & silver to the government?
OT Just wanted to mention that I approve of the magnificent boobs avatar trend here on ZH. Ta ta, HEZ :-p
[Yea I guess im not understanding why the PM's are diving too??]---AZSovreign
Hi Sovreign. I'm not a pro, but I'll give you my take on it.
This happens a lot. When stocks are tumbling, investors who bought/hold stock on margin(borrowing $ from their broker) are required by their brokers to either sell their plummeting stocks or put up more of their own money to keep their stocks (a "margin call").
Many of these same investors also own PM stocks/ETFs, an out-performing asset class of late. What happens? The investor decides to sell off some of their profitable PM investments in order to raise money to keep their plummeting stocks.
In a nutshell, you take profits from your hot assets in order to keep the ones that suck. (Believing, of course, that your sucky assets today are worth keeping in the long run.)
Hence, PMs are under selling pressure.
Hope that helps.
That's great appreciate the info ;)
AZ, keep this in mind. This is very important. The stockmarket is so completely manipulated by the Fed that determining cause/affect is now impossible. The "market" in stockmarket is gone.
Judging from market movement, I'd venture to say the Fed is controlling 70-80% of market action. 20-30% of the time, the market slips out of the Fed's control.
I've noticed a lot of posters with "AZ" in their ZHedge name. Reporting in from Arizona?
"The stockmarket is so completely manipulated by the Fed that determining cause/affect is now impossible."
Well not really. It's just that now the 'cause' mostly relates to the motivations of the FED - or rather the people the FED works for. Which have nothing to do with economics. Someone should run a course 'Psychology of the Elites 101'.
Brokers are called brokers for good reason.
Well, it appears that gold is acting like money. Imagine that.
They say "Morgan died peacefully." This is why....
Being sold off like the commodities though not nearly as much. I wonder when that Golden day will come when people run towards Gold and away from fiat?
Not too long now.
That is seriously fucked up. Doesn't make sense at all.
the bernank prattles on about something tomorrow... thus pm's down.
Maybe Japanese holders sold to raise cash? Or maybe other gold holders sold to go short Topix, etc? Or both, plus various unknowns?
Before this event is over, gold and silver are going to go off the charts. Anybody selling PMs in the midst of this must be do so because of margin calls on other shit, and I do mean shit.
May God help them.
The mother of all black swans.
Is that Bob Ross? if so, +1 for that happy little squirrel fucker. I used to watch him daily after coming home from school. Sorry for the tangent.. everyone is in "OMG" mode, I couldn't help but try to inject some funneh.
All news agencies evacuating area around reactors .....
Reported that the 50 workers on site are also being evacuated. So Daichi 1 to 4 are left unattended, the water stops going in and the situation continues to degrade.
And so we arrive at the door of "the worst possible case".
I will repeat what I said yesterday : I believe this will be the worst nuclear disaster in the history of mankind. And it still may not be over yet, more reactors may blow in Japan, and the radiation may spew for days, weeks or even months, years.
Think GoM : the leak is just the start, capping it is the hard part. It killed many Russians at Chernobyl, and I think it'll kill a lot of Japanese too before the end. I have not heard of a credible estimated spread of radiation, worldwide, but I doubt it's pretty.
going to need some type of catstrophic explosion plus fire for that to occur, where the core itself is part of the blaze.
Chernobyl was pretty bad as far as reactor accidents go...it blew up and then burnt. Graphite fires are insanely problematic
I'm thinking that the burning pool of "spent" fuel might be a candidate . . .
At least Obama improved his golf game today!

Who could have imagined this scenario just a week ago?
On March 4th:
I’m always reminded of Master Daichi to Samurai Kikushi, in the snow…. and I’ll just quote the relevant part:
The sky disintegrates and turns to dust,
The great earth becomes peaceful, no one can see it.
Abruptly, the dry tree opens it’s one flower.
Calling to another spring, beyond history.

Fuck, big time. Oh my God this is worse than a disaster its a nightmare come true. Just when I was starting to weaken towards nuke power if they put it in the middle of nowhere. Unforeseen consequences. I'm seeing black swans gathering and picking up speed. "Good night and good luck".
Judging the safety of nuclear power by this accident is like judging car safety by a single accident by a drunk person driving his pre-Castro car while drunk and after having a seizure.
That reactor is from the old design that the US, Japan, and others have been stuck with due to overbearing regulation that has prevented newer, much safer designs from coming on line (like pebble bed reactors, which are literally impossible to have a melt down with, even when piled up in a big pile with no water).
We will have unrestricted nuclear power, or we will have systemic collapse.
I enjoy your postings, T, but the problem is that we've already been promised no more Chernobyls.
It couldn't happen here, etc, it was the fault of the Russian designs, etc.
In retrospect, it was obvious that a tsunami would follow a major quake. But apparently the Fukushima engineers didn't consider that 'remote' possibility.
Hats off to engineers in general, but frankly they've screwed the pooch on nuclear too many times now. No earthquake-prone country with democracy is going to be able to commission more of these things. The pols who signed the deals would be lynched.
I think his point was that we are in this situation because the industry has generally not been allowed to advance/upgrade because of previous accidents. I have no doubt there is a fair bit of stupid involved in this one as well. There is always politics. If purely science/engineering, we would be on thorium MSRs by now, have electrified highways, and oil dependancy would be in the rear view mirror.
But that is not our present reality.
Regardless, if nuclear is removed from the energy picture, folks might want to get used to the whole concept of horse drawn buggies, as energy is the basis for modern society. Without nuclear, we are just left with fossil fuels which already provide far too much of the energy pie and already threaten to blow the wheels off the economy. If you you just wish to run on renewables, which mankind did pretty much until the industrial revolution, I suggest you get an axe and start on that tree over there. It will be cold soon, so don't piss around.
Cooter
Oh, come on. You either increase output (no longer looks possible, forget the quibbling over source) or you reduce consumption.
As a species we start trying to reduce consumption or we see a massive die-off. Biological systems presented with new inputs tend to overshoot sustainable population levels. Always. It balances out through catastrophe. We have brains and have a chance of out-thinking the biology, but it hasn't looked good over the past 50 years.
Nukes? Oil? Somehow we're going to find a way to provide similar energy levels to the other 90% of the global population that've been exhausting our output when provided to 10% of the global population?
Yeah, sure. Deus ex machina, babe. It's ALL good.
I'll take systemic collapse for $400, Alex.
One magnitude 9 quake, and all the nuclear feelgood hype is in ruins.
But we still haven't had a major meteorite strike, or supervolcano eruption. Give it time. This is the key point with nuclear fission power plants. Even assuming humanly impossible engineering perfection, The Universe is going to fuck them right up now and then.
So it's taken 30 years before the first natural disaster induced nuclear nightmare. So what? 30 years is nothing compared to many of the really horrible radionucleotide half-lives. It's only been hubris that allowed the nuclear industry to claim 30 years of (not so) 'cheap' electricity was worth the risk of hundreds of thousands of years of human death and misery.
But now that stupidity is over, because now we have videos of exploding nuclear plants. Plants plural, going off like popcorn one after another. Just to underline the point.
Also, I suspect the fat red pen underlining we are to be given has barely begun.
Makes you think. There has been increased seismic activity in the lower Appalachia. And, I wonder how the Yellowstone caldera is holding up. With a super volcano, who needs nukes.
Oh lord. Worrying about the Yellowstone Caldera is like worrying about what the ground will feel like after falling 5000ft.
That thing unzips and it's lights out for everyone, a true ELE (extinction-level event).
I'm about 250 miles away from Yellowstone; cancelled the earthquake insurance when I saw the T.V. special and about 6 months later my insurance company told me that "the government" was requiring that my premium go up by 150%.
Of course, I had just refinanced my house to a 15 year from a 30 year and the roulette wheel of shit, lemons, and a cherry or two landed on GMAC. Coincidence? Don't think so.
Fuck 'em. If that thing blows I won't care about my house or anything else. That is verbatim what I said to the insurance company. "Cancel it. I'm not going to eat their risk after me and my kids bailed out their sorry asses."

It is time to get focused on exactly one thing (besides getting the information analyzed and snarky comments):
ENTOMBMENT.
These assholes have been way behind. They need to get ahead of this thing. Entombment is the way to do it.
All forces and resources in the world should be trained on this.
Hey you media types reading this: Ask about entombment. Then ask some more.
Significant contamination of the Kanto Plain simply cannot be allowed.
good point...helicopters/crains and shit
shouldn't a meteor fall down about now and seal them up to balance out all this karma?
Its right next to the coast. Youre telling me we cant just blast the whole plant back into the sea?
That would be kind of difficult being how they're currently in meltdown. The only thing to do now is pray to God.
From the Chernobyl crisis:
"The fire was extinguished by a combined effort of helicopters dropping over 5,000 metric tons of materials like sand, lead, clay, and boron onto the burning reactor and injection of liquid nitrogen. Ukrainian filmmaker Vladimir Shevchenko captured film footage of a Mi-8 helicopter as it collided with a nearby construction crane, causing the helicopter to fall near the damaged reactor building and kill its four-man crew."
You don't wait.
Entomb the things.
Entombment is impossible. They are not built on bedrock like Cherynoble. They are bilt on compacted fill and the bottom won't hold.
1. That sounds like BS.
2. So you're saying that no reactors should be allowed except on bedrock. That part I am OK with. If there are any more.
And hundreds died trying to put it out. Would you like to volunteer?
2nd firefighting crew: 'we are ready - where is the hose?'
Soviet Command: 'it will be waiting for you'
I vote for emtombment and whatever else helps.
But the Chernobyl fire was exposed to the sky after the explosion so they could drop that material right on the contents of the destroyed reactor and fire. That might not be the case here, at least (hopefully) not yet.
About 1,500 tons of spent fuel may be in the fuel storage basins on the top floor of the reactors, exposed to the atmosphere when the pool boils dry.
good point, I hadn't thought of that. So maybe dumping would help there.
Again, I vote for any and everything that would help.
The helicopter crashed because the crew inside recieved a leathal dose of radiation when they were hovering over it. I heard they recieved the Order of Lenin for it.
They were cooked in the helicopter and were dead before they hit the ground.
No, you're combining two different stories. One heli clipped crane cables with it's blades, and crashed. I have a copy of the film of it. Other crews were indeed killed rapidly by high radiation, as were most of the initial responding firefighters.
There are fields near Chernobyl full of the fire trucks, armored vehicles, helicopters an so on, that are too hot to go anywhere near, even today. Pictures of those too.
Read up on the new sarcophagus that will, in 2013 entomb the ruined reactor at Chernobyl. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Safe_Confinement
Admittedly, I know little about nuclear diaster containment, but I do hope that someone is attempting to think middle-term on this, whatever that entails. I may be naive on the subject, but it seems to me that the seawater solution is a temporary fix that is slowing (every minute is precious in a potential evac scenario) a quickly worsening situation.
This is taken from the link you provided. Wow.
<<< It has been estimated that up to 95% of the original radioactive inventory of reactor unit 4 still remains inside the ruins of the reactor building. >>>
They need to build 6 large Sarcophaguses like for Chernobyl RIGHT NOW !!!
"sarcophogus" is the word, not "entombment." and "these are multiple reactors and MULTIPLE facilities" now.
No, entombment is the word. One entombs in a sarcophogus. That goes back to ancient Egypt. There are other reactors besides Chernobyl that have used this technique.

Shouldn't the Japanese have put the nuke plants on the OTHER side of their island, away from the tsunami-causing subduction zone?
No shit! But it was cheaper to build on the other side....until now.
In hindsight absolutely. Just like we should be closing down any West coast ocean exposed Nuke stations here until the back-up generators are made waterproof. Will we??? It's a travesty what happened. Everythig did well through the quake everything performed according to plan. But the tsunami killed the back-up power and that did it. They hadn't planned for the combination punch.
Do you mean travesty or trajedy? A travesty is "a literary or artistic burlesque of a serious work or subject, characterized by grotesque or ludicrous incongruity of style, treatment or subject matter." Although this is stranger than fiction, and uglier than some art I have seen, it is neither. The definition of a tragedy.

Everyone is selling equities and flooding into JGB's driving yields even further down than many thought possible. Kyle Bass has got to be crying in his beer tonight as 10 year yields hit 1.18 in the midst of massive intervention by the BOJ to prevent a run-up in the Yen.
But I think a huge whipsaw is coming to the Yen that will blow people's minds. I hope the BOJ is buying lots of dollars because they're going to need them as hedgies and other foreign investors begin to liquidate their JGB's. Just watch as yields and the Yen start running the other way.

I rarely post anything of value here, but pointing out that you are an ignorant fuckwit that should be dismembered and used for shark chum to appease the personification of your 'angry god' will be considered by some ZH FNG's to be a public service announcement.
So, get out of mom's basement, change out of those undies with the Cheetos stains on the crotch and asscrack, and report to the nearest troller for chum duty. And I hope it has a Japanese crew with very dull knives.
your arrogance and vitriol speak more to your ignorance regarding the interconnectivity all things and summarizes more than anyone needs to point out.
reading what you type as if you're an expert about things any of us have very little understanding of is revolting.
How omniscient of you to determine my knowledge and mindset from a post wherein I discussed neither. So I take it that you agree with ruffian that the Japanese deserved this tragedy?
Remove the log in your own eye, brother.
first, i merely responded to your misplaced hate filled rhetoric proffering that those like ruffian bringing up this possibility of retribution?
from what i gathered from ruffian's posts is not wishing ill on innocent people. it's less about anyone deserving tragedy and more about a disrupted balance.
one can only imagine the correction that needs to (and will) happen on this continent.
is there a point somewhere in the obscenity? again more typical zerohedge retort. I can accept things like" there is no retribution in nature" thats fine. But because you are angry that 10k people have died and you dont shed a tear or even give a passing thought for any veal crate makes YOU above most, responsible for the sick society we've found ourselves in. You pretend to have a conscience for a week a year during a tradegy and then go back to reruns of greys anatomy the rest of the time
Why are you angry? I merely suggest (in a colorful fashion) that you help redress the balance by ceasing to be part of the problem. I think you'd be better off, seeing as you have the emotional capacity of a carrot in even suggesting that this was something that was inflicted upon the Japanese people because they deserved it. If you truly care about how all life and consciousness is connected, you would have a different response towards those who have already died, and those who may yet die from the events now transpiring.
Otherwise, you're just a sanctimonious little prick of a troll.
