No Detente: China-Japan Foreign Row Escalates
Is the world about to see a new Chinese export ban? Is it time to buy assorted new bubble ETFs all over again? Looks like China just refuses to let things go, and Japan is not going to get access to those rare earths any time soon.
- Japan "damaged atmosphere" with China at summit by raising disputed islands - Chinese official
- Japan "released untrue information" that Japanese, Chinese Premiers would meet - Chinese official

I couldn't put it any better than that. I'm kind of surprised mainstream media hasn't picked up on the rare earth metal export ban because that is pretty much a red flag to hybrid cars as well as some other nice technologies were getting into.

Due to environmental and safety concerns, silver-oxide batteries are beginning to replace lithium-ion batteries in mobile phones and laptop computers. Silver-zinc batteries feature a water-based chemistry and contain no lithium or flammable liquids. c'mon man!

Japan & China situation is very ominous.
Either they will kiss up (very unlikely since China starts to feel its economic, military and geopolitical power it intends to use) or an escalation confrontation will follow all across the board.
Japan must realize that it cannot any more depend on an American defensive umbrella any more. Consequently, re-militarization of Japan will follow very soon. Nuclear weapon capabilities are must for Japan to defend itself from numerous neighbours with long inflamed memories.

As for the USA, its geopolitical situation deteriorate quite fast to due to
caconhma,
Interesting to see the use of the word "treasonous" because (IMO) it could be defined as applicable for the more egregious actions of some of the people in banking and even high government office.
The Merriam-Webster definition of treason:
"1. "the betrayal of a trust. TREACHERY"
" 2: the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family."So the first definition applys. For the actionable second definition to apply, intent would have to be proven.
But it is certainly a useful word when considering the actions of many of the people in positions of responsibility.
hbjork1,
The Merriam-Webster second definition of treason is deliberately defined as a loyalty to a presiding government regardless of the government legitimacy and/or its criminal activities regarding to the state laws and constitution.
An example: actions to overthrow a puppet government of the state installed by an invading force and/or by foreign subversion cannot be qualified as a treason but rather it is the people civic duty.
Error.
All a part of the co-ordinated shrillification. Looks like "release" time is approaching.
The current state of the world sounds like an orgy gone all wrong, horribly wrong!

It's the real "Japan Scenario." China uses its dollar forex reserves to subjugate Japan, build and deploy submarines and elbow the U.S. out of the Pacific. Doesn't anyone play chess anymore?
Sugjugate Japan? Read a little history or just travel to either Japan or China. The Japanese and Chinese hate each other on a visceral level. The Chinese have not forgotten WWII. Ironically, one of the reasons American tourists are popular amongst the locals in China is the fact that the U.S. fought the Japanese in WWII. There is no way the Japanese will let themselves be subjugated by China because of currency manipulations.
People forget about the Chinese still being communists and spreaders of their propaganda. I wouldn't put much faith into their whining.
Yeah because you know capitalist tell the truth...
Kabuki
Long time China watchers will notice this anti-Japanese rhetoric and anticipate some bad domestic economic news coming out soon. Japan-bashing has long been a favorite diversionary tactic of the State's puppet-masters. First, the "official" jabber, then street rallies and then the finale: eggs and paint being tossed at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing and Consular Offices in other cities. There's been no better way to let off steam in China.
The real "test" of China-Japan relations--the annual pilgrimmage by Japanese officials to the Yakasuni Shrine (memorializing World War II "heroes")--has already passed. They did not go.
Japanese Kabuki is based entirely on Peking Opera.
It's all about the ownership of Diaoyu islands. The history of Second Sino-Japanese War still haunts. "Defer the Disputes, Explore Together" is proved to be a BIG JOKE by which Chinese leaders have fooled their people for a long time. Japanese, however, never forget to seize others' land territory.
Actually it's all about the massacre at Nanking. The Japanese are one of the most ruthless races in the world, bar none. They have the eskimo's detachment to slaughter.
And it was recent enough (in the larger picture) for it to fresh enough and easily invokable. Plus, stories like the Japanese executive Hotel Sex parties.... on it's own, Japan is like Israel, no friends around. Their WWII excesses ensured that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasukuni_Shrine
...Yasukuni is a shrine to house the actual souls of the dead as kami, or "spirits/souls" as loosely defined in English. It is believed that all negative or evil acts committed are absolved when enshrinement occurs....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre
...The massacre remains a contentious political issue, as various aspects of it have been disputed by some historical revisionists and Japanese nationalists,[3] who have claimed that the massacre has been either exaggerated or wholly fabricated for propaganda purposes. As a result of the nationalist efforts to deny or rationalize the war crimes, the controversy created surrounding the massacre remains a stumbling block in Sino-Japanese relations, as well as Japanese relations with other Asia-Pacific nations such as South Korea and the Philippines.
An accurate estimation of the death toll in the massacre is never achieved because most of the Japanese military records on the killings were deliberately destroyed or kept secret shortly after the surrender of Japan in 1945....
Yeah, I mean, if the Japanese had invaded mainland US, massacred 200k people, raped countless civilians, and then dismissed it as unimportant, we would forgive and forget, right? No hard feelings, right?
Gramps found a way to deal with them tenacious little buggers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD89Z0_Rav8
It would make it much harder to label the tea party racists.
In WWII, while the Germans made killing an industry, the Japanese truly made torture and death an art form that they celebrated everywhere they set foot. The press has largely been quiet on this.
I doubt that it is a matter of cultural identity or genetics, but it is an indelible fact of history . . . one that the Chinese suffered deeply and unforgettably.
Bob, if you spend enough time with them (I have), the Japanese show a side that is rarely suspected under their flat demeanor.
One interesting thing, that few know, is that Japanese people do not get hangovers. That's genetic. I've had days when I've been nursing a terrible Sake induced hangover and my Japanese partners would be outside the door, 6:30 in the AM, in their suits, having out drunk me the previous night 3:1.
They are very very different as people. Goes with the territory of having been isolated for all those years.

If you take a close look, as I have, at humanity on either a micro or macro scale, you will find murderous cruelty everywhere. That is what the structure and conventions of civility are meant to control. Freud had that much right:

Even mommy, who is universally lauded as the epitome of selfless love, has her other side that we are not free to confront. But that doesn't change the facts.

Good Points, Bob and below.
The particular observation was just germane to the topic at hand.
But yes, there is an inherent barbarism in us all. Prisoner abuse is the best/worst exemplar of that. And women do it too.
What a stunning indictment of the human stain, eh?
Sad!

"In WWII, while the Germans made killing an industry". It is not true. Soviets and Americans were real criminals responsible for the WWII.
Remember that even British PM Chamberlain stated that it was America who forces the British Empire into the WWII. It was FDR who did not want to negotiate with Germans. He wanted "a regime change" in Germany. Sounds familiar?
Back in early 1940s, the war with Japan was called by American people "the FDR's war" and the war with Germany was called "the Jewish war".
You Americans are brainwashed imbeciles!
PS
Hitler was a totalitarian dictator. The National Socialist Germany was an evil place but it was not as murderous as Jewish Bolshevik/Stalinist Soviet Union. Soviets were more like the Khmer Rouge.
So before making stupid and false statements, it is better to learn the real history instead of one portrayed by the American Zionist controlled mass media and its lackeys.
Don't let me get in the way of a good rant.
Yet, consider the topic here: Japan-China relations. I used the Germans--who did practice industrial genocide--as a measure of crimes against humanity relevant to the time period of my thesis: WWII. During this time, the Japanese perpetrated massive war crimes against the Chinese, as well as the Koreans and American POW's. Just a simple, but not widely known fact.
Not to say that your other examples are not true. They are simply irrelevant to the issue at hand.
Good luck with the "Zionists" and their lackeys.
Hm, last time I checked, I thing it was the Great Leader Mao who killed the most people with his Great Leap Backward. But I forgot where he came from...
And no, it doesn't matter whether the killer is of the same "race" or not - we are all equal humans after all.
Tis not the only escalation......,

You Americans don't understand Chinese at all.
Losing face is THE WORST thing that can happen to them.
Admitting you are wrong is a serious loss of face.
Accepting responsibility is such an admission of error.
Any Chinese I know - including my own wife - would rather insist that black is white and have the entire Rest-of-the-World laughing at them than admit to being wrong and...LOSE FACE.
This is called Childishness 101 ~ cutting off your nose to punish your face ~ to we westerners but to them something like admitting Diaoyutai Islands belong to Japan would be UNTHINKABLE....!
Really though Kredit? You think if Puerto Rico/Guam/Diego Garcia said set us free or Russia said give us back Alaska, westerners would just shrug and say "Okay"!
Wait, why not look at Japan and Okinawa....
That is not realistic. Remember the Falklands? I could go on.

All cultures have great difficulty (to put it mildly) admitting mistakes, much less wrongdoing. As for your wife, I've heard a few other husbands make similar complaints of their wives. Perhaps this is not legitimately a cultural distinction?
Hey Kred, kind of like how America, after 10 years, can't admit it was wrong in Iraq and Afghanistan, right? Talk about the rest of the world laughing...
Yeah, still looks childish to me. Point is, Japan also has a very strong claim to Diaoyutai and to blanket deny that is akin to calling black white even as the titters and laughter go on behind their backs. Even to this day the Chinese claim Manchuria, Tibet, Taiwan, and numerous islands as THEIRS without ever once admitting to the legitimacy of others' claims. It just looks silly.
This is 2010, isn't it? - Not 1810. We SHOULD be above such nonsense, shouldn't we? Gunboat diplomacy IS dead, isn't it? Obviously NOT.
The Americans doing this? Yes, but Americans aren't concerned with losing face. They just utter baldfaced lies and fraud because they know a)they won't be found out, b)they won't be prosecuted and c)no one is likely to care anyway...and some guy once said the best lie is the biggest one, didn't he?
My wife? (Chinese). Will kneejerk defend her useless, twice-divorced, adulterous and nitwit thieving brother against either of his former wives - AUTOMATICALLY. Something like the home country...
Well said. The Chinese policy just seems to backwardish, like 100 years too late.
I guess this is a phase an emerging power house has to go through to mature.
But the Japanese are to blame, too, for them not being able to openly come to terms with their past plus being the pet of the USA in terms of foreign policy.
If China would just try to become the respected new leader in east asia... that would greatly contribute to the rebalancing of the world.
Even to this day the Chinese claim Manchuria, Tibet, Taiwan, and numerous islands as THEIRS without ever once admitting to the legitimacy of others' claims. It just looks silly.
Sounds like Russia's claim to Chechnya... Israel's claim to Palestine... India's claim to Kashmir... UK's claim to Falklands... Mexico's claim to California, New Mexico, Arizona... The U.S' claim to well, the entire US... Australia's claim to, well, Australia (against the wishes of the aborigines)... and so on and so forth. Your desire to single out one ethnicity is the weakness in your entire argument.
Well, I'm sure you'd have to agree that the ability to recognize the reasonable claims of others as having some legitimacy - instead of just putting one's head in the sand - is a sign of maturity that China hasn't shown yet.
Poor South Korea, it will be collateral damage.
I hear silver and gold make good substitutes for some rare earth metals (:-)
Central Eurasia and Africa are outside China's control and have huge mineral resources, so it would be natural of Japan to begin to work with governments in those locations to develop mining and refining capacity and markets.
Time for a good ol'fashioned war
Its alot more fun to watch this kind of conflict than to participate.
The best party in town is always the communist party, because those bitches never sleep ...

Give this person a cigar, though the more well known name is Senkaku Islands. And before I go on, let me present a headline that got no attention on ZH despite it being THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS OF ABOUT 40 YEARS.
http://articles.cnn.com/2010-10-27/us/alaska.oil.reserves_1_undiscovered-oil-national-petroleum-reserve-exploration-wells?_s=PM:US
Understand the Japanese psyche. They have no oil, no coal and no natural gas. In their perspective THIS is what got them nuked 60 years ago. FDR embargoed oil from them in August 1941 and they had to go to war to secure a supply from Indonesia. In that time frame the USA was the Saudi Arabia of the world. The USA was the big oil exporter.
There is alleged to be natural gas and maybe some oil offshore of the Senkaku Islands. This is the location of World War III's flashpoint -- and it will be all about oil as oil production globally peaks.
It's all downhill from here, folks. Forever.
Everybody ignores the salient fact that within China there exists Tyranny. Japan is a democracy. It has reformed its system of government, (albeit through defeat in World War II). No such luck in China, (and I would not be holding your breath for it to change). The West's gambit in "giving away the store" in order to make them "more like us" has FAILED.
Adjust now to these increasingly obvious circumstances or be assimilated by the new Rising Sun.
There is NO moral equivalence between the Chinese government and the Japanese government, (and invoking past actions by other entities is SOPHISTRY).
The West must support its allies in East Asia, the ones who support its values.
Care to enumerate said "Values" gnomon? I'd say the western "value" system is looking pretty tattered right now. On every imaginable metric.
Sorry, but your comment reminded me of "hating your fredumbs" and "freedom fries".

Unfortunately, There really is no real democracy in Japan as we in the US have no real democracy. Take a 1000 yen note and fold it in half. Looking at the summit of Mt Fuji and holding it up to the light the eye of the person on the front is right in the middle of the summit. Eye in a triangle hmmm....
And look they have the same crappy central bank system as we do hmmm...
Nowhere in the world is never going to be free until we overthrow the tyrannical oligarchical eyeball triangle cult.
Oh, and just look at the reflection of Mt. Fuji on the water of the 1000 JPY bill.
What you see is... not Mt. Fuji... but MT. SINAI!!
The Illuminati are their own separate religion/empire. They always try and blame others for their evil deeds.
and...and...and if you fold a 10K JPY into a crane, dip it in soy sauce and look at the rising sun thru a laser you can see hank paulsen winking at you from a bowl of rice...
The West's gambit in "giving away the store" in order to make them "more like us" has FAILED.
Seriously, do you think that was the goal of the US-based multinational corporations that financed the industrialization of China or the American government that encouraged it?!
Bob, It was a bit of both. They thought they could make out like bandits, and ALSO co-opt the PRC. As has been speculated here and there, the PRC will be "the last man standing" in the just-beginning Resource Wars, (if we don't WAKE UP and stop them), not the multi-national corporations.
The multi-national corporations were/are "useful tools/idiots" for the PRC/PLA and were (and are) increasingly being penetrated and compromised by PRC operatives, (who have multi-national identities).
China has played the Great Game very well, and they have almost Check-mated The West without firing a shot.

That one sentence from gnomon "might" have a valid point. If TPTB could have gotten all those Asians to start carrying personal debt, the credit bubble could still be expanding. I'm thinking I even remember the Bush administration making note of this at one time.
"Is the world about to see a new Chinese export ban?" -
Is the world about to see a nuclear-armed Japan? As the only (so far) victim of nuclear arms, Japan has more rights than any other country how have nukes.
And, how about nuclear-armed Taiwan? Wouldn't that piss off the commie Chinks?
Okay you naysayers, go to China and harshly criticize their government about any of their policies and see where you end up.
Your arguments are ridiculous and SOPHISTRY.
And if you happened to be a member of the Falun Gong, you just might end up having your organs harvested for some ageing Politburo member.
No democracy or democratic republic is safe from corruption, and we have seen where we have been led. Let us not throw in the towel and slide into Tyranny, such as they have in China.
Do you think the PRC would allow a site like Zerohedge to exist!
As I said, you naysayers are RIDICULOUS SOPHISTS! Grow up! And fight to preserve what liberty we have left. And then let us expand it. Don't curl up in a ball and suck your thumb and whine about what should have been!
Huh?!? What's the dif?
Here you can "harshly criticize the government" and nobody will turn off their TV or give a damn and nothing will ever change...
Ah, but if you reside within a Tyranny, you get your butt hauled off to jail. YOUR circumstances definitely change.
Remember that old saying, "You don't know what you got until it is gone"?
Well it applies equally to love, money, and FREEDOM.
Again, this is shallow thinking from people who think "it can't happen here", that it can not get worse, (something short of the possible apocalypse that we all speculate about as things get worse).
Treasure what liberty you have left and seek to expand upon it. PUSH BACK!
Baseless. China is not different than any power in this term.
The US has something that no other player has: that is the capacity to mess more efficiently within others' domestic affairs than any other player in the game.
In tyranny as you call, just like in a free country, you can speak against the power as long as you are no threat to it. The day you represent one, it is over.
In the US, people speaking against the government fail to represent any kind of threat to the power apparatus.
Your pictures of tyranny or more exactly despotism is erroneous in this regard.
Power tries to suppress threats. It does not waste time on squashing innocuous actions. You have thousands of examples of this: despots prefer to enjoy life rather than fearing a guy wiping off his ass and speaking against them. Yes, they did fear the guy who could muster the crowd as it could mean the despot's head on a pitch.
If you look at China, most of publicized dissenters are associated with western powers and by such represent a real threat as western powers have the power to topple the chinese government.
Notice by the way the scheme is regular: many dictators accross the world manage to seat on the throne thanks to western powers and got a blank check thanks to that as dissenters could no longer form an alliance with a foreign power enabling them to topple their current government.
You dont even need to moan about what you never knew.
In the western world, we have a tremendously resilient power structure that knows no threat and in the end, is often compelled to fabricate threats in order to expand its power range.
I am sure that you have heard of the Stasi in Old East Germany before the Berlin Wall fell. That is Tyranny on steroids, much like what is operating in China today. No due process, Kangaroo Courts. Really, such preposterous statements as you have made above deserve no more examination by anyone with a critical mind.
Your hate blinds you. When you blithely ignore the notion of degrees of governmental control and the fact that there are NO institutional brakes on governmental behavior in the PRC/PLA you have drifted off into la la land.
I hope that we never see the day when I can say I told you so.
Am I the only one who is kind of happy that there is political dispute in the world that does not directly involve the U.S.
Some years ago and the Author name escapes me there purge in Japan was just as ruthless as the brown shirts in Western Europe. If you had a opinion you lost your head. China and Japan know this at a core level in a cilvilized mind but we would be at error to ignore generational dynamics of individuals. I do not know the fulcrum point of the new normal of todays balance. In the long run it will be about water, and stability in the food supply from mother nature. People seem to linger to stupor on how Lean business practices cause shortages when mother nature seizes the scene.
