North Korea Severs All Relations With South Korea; 50 Bps ECB Rate Cut Rumor
Reuters reports that a government spokesman has announced that North Korea has cut all relations with Seoul. In other completely unfounded rumors, the market allegedly expects that the ECB will cut its 1.00% rate by 50 bps. Because JCT can't wait to tell his favorite investment bank just what and when he will be doing.

SK is using loudspeakers along the border, broadcasting stuff like pop music? That's amazing. NK soldiers have orders to shoot the speakers.
great, another war. Our peace prize winning leader could turn out to be responsible for the most American military deaths since Lyndon Johnson.
I'm more concerned about the civilians of other nations than our own hired mercs.
Well, if there is no war, it will be because KIJ gets what he wants with the incident (sinking of SK ship).
Maybe our Dear Leader will offer him money, help with building nuc bombs, or an apology for the Korean War to mollify him.
The SK govt is in a hard place. Do they ignore act of war and look weak or do they stand up to NK and risk war. So far they stand up (US also) but talk is cheap.
I suspect US is working behind scenes to buy off NK and this will blow over (except for the 46 sailors).
Same happens to US military. We are expendable but we are not worthless pawns whose death means nothing. It is everything to us and our families and should be treated as a big deal, not given one minute of lip service and back to business as usual. But Dear Leader would not care if US military are killed, don't see him getting riled up over SK military deaths. (Same with US media, as long as the President is Demo--notice no body counts on national TV, no faces shown or hometowns mentioned. Dying for Dear Leader is an honor. Dying for Bush was stupid--in media's mind. Soldiers really die for country and unit, IMH opinion.)
Not war is always better than war, but letting NK kill those sailors with no consequences must be a tough thing to swallow for SK people. It should be. Fine line for SK to walk, deterrence important but war disastrous. God help them with NK as neighbor. No good way out.
I think that you have pointed to the only solution for the South: Preemptive war with the North.
Given the large amount of artillery near Seoul, waiting for a first strike from the North is suicide. At least with a preemptive war, a large number of the guns could be knocked out and the rest taken out quickly. Letting North Korea get the first round in would be a disaster. Preemptive attack, would be nowhere near as catastrophic.
The point to look for now, is if the South perceives that the North will want to go to war. Cross that imaginary line, and the engagement begins.
NK knows this
I think a war in that region will be a no-win situation. The only way to stem the tide of hundreds of thousands of advancing NKtroops would be to use battlefield nukes. You think the Gulf is an ecological disaster, wait till Korea glows in the dark. I feel bad about the US soldiers stationed on the line. I don't think the odds are particularly in their favor. US military is more advanced in that region, but the sheer manpower behind the NK army is staggering. NK soldiers are better trained than the combatants encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Does someone have details: how many US combat troops are on that line, and what are their standing orders?
How long can NK make war without receiving a substantial aid from an ally? Not that long I'm guessing, so is their goal to capture Seoul and open negotiations?
Invisible Hand,
I guess you don't watch PBS NewsHour with Judy Wooodruff and Jim Lehrer. Each and every week, they list the soldiers who have died with their names, pictures, age, and hometown. It is on PUBLIC television, which is largely funded by the "Evil" U.S. Government. Just thought you might like to know that in case you were to wake up from your paranoid fantasyland. By the way, Republican Congressmen have tried to kill funding for PBS multiple times, most nearly when the twice divorced Catholic Newt Gingrich was running the show in the House of Representatives for the Republicans.
He's worse than Johnson and Nixon combined.
But thank god we have a new administration and Bush is out of office. Good riddance.

I wonder if this is a diversion. Perhaps hostility breaks out in Korea-the fleet and other military assets are repositioned and then Syria and friends pounce on Israel. It is no secret that North Korea sells arms to Iran and Syria. Hope this is all wrong.
Obama will not get involved in this without China approval, IMO. Hu could end this in a minute if he wanted. High stakes poker and Obama is only holding Clinton and Geithner in his hand. Despite the military occupation of S Korea and Japan, the US is weak in Asia. Save an act of desperation or insanity, the US will do little more than stand on the sidelines and cheer on the ROK and use this situation to scare the Japanese.
China ordered the sinking with an eye towards its move on Taiwan. Low risk opportunity to gauge the response of the U.S.A. towards an ally.
The only real issue with Taiwan are covert arm sales. The new Taiwanese government and China are on good terms and there is increasing capital flows between the two. With patience, China will have another Hong Kong in Taiwan within the decade with no blood spilled. It is more an issue for the US to stir up a need for their presence in Asia.
The strong-arming over the relocation of the US Marine base in Okinawa despite massive protests by the Japanese people is an example that these scare tactics are working.
ahh, the smell of fear and the sounds of sabers rattling... blood sent rushing and testosterone flying... feel the pride in the air! stand with our dear leaders!

Biden was right when he said Obama would be tested early by foreign powers. (a little late on the call, but right) Obama is getting pushed around by NK, Iran, Afghanistan, and domestic politics. He is good, but not this good. I don't trust anyone in Washington to guide us through the events currently unfolding. The way I see it we are being ganged up on. NK and Iran don't think we can hold down the fort in so many different places at one time and they may be right. The west is crumbling and appeasement, Neville Chamberlain style, is on the menu.
Has anyone noticed that NK is blank on Google maps? Not Google Earth, but Google maps. There are maps of Iran, but nothing on NK at all. I mean satellites can photograph NK and there's nothing they can do about it but Google has chosen to leave it blank.
That is not a coincidence.
On a separate note. I'm in Mountain View, CA which is across 101 from Moffett Field, home of NASA and other clandestine operations. The base was closed for Naval operation in the '90s but has remained in Use for NASA and "Special Operations"
The base is generally very quiet these days. But when international events get serious the air traffic over Moffett escalates.
Yesterday was the busiest it's been in years.
You have officially be designated as the ZH military traffic spotter in Mountain, CA. Which means the NSA has suddenly taken a very special interest in you. :>)
OH S***...LOL
Relax, it's just the blimp, er, airship.

Why is everyone overthinking this?
Simply send "Slick Willy C" over with a box of cigars, and the world will be returned to order. He's got proven diplomatic relations with the North, and he's one hell of a ninja with the cigar.
Kinda gross, though, to think of him asking KJI to drop trou so they can play hide the cigar, like he did with Monica.
And, besides, if Willy one-upped the Missus, she'd be super pissed.
hmmm looks like it was actually a german torpedo. who just got some free german submarines as part of the holohoax reparations deal?

You anti-semitic Jew-bashers who insist that every evil on Earth is due to Israel can all line up and blow me.
That is the most inane and baseless statement I have ever read on the internet.
Use your brain or someone else will use it.
It reminds me video once I watched. Big herd of Chimps with the boss in the middle of the pack of females taking care of his needs. Young males at the fringe roaming around and teasing young females, big guy doesn’t like it because all of females belong to him. When he looks right, young males pretend they scratching their heads or they are busy chewing on something. At the same time youngsters on the left are fucking girls as fast as possible. When big old guy turns left he sees the same picture but on the right young guys are at the fast job. It was repeating for some time until big guy got pissed and attacked one of the braver, laws of herd breaking one. At this time all those youngsters attacked him and new boss was chosen.
What channel was this, it doesn't sound like Discovery. (Well maybe after midnight.)
I think that was a documentary made by Max Keiser.
Meet the new boss,

Wars and Rumors of Wars.
With the provocative title of "ECB rate cut anybody????" Citibank foreign exchange analysts put out a research note Tuesday answering that question in the affirmative. They noted that yields on two-year German bonds are now a quarter-point beneath the ECB's benchmark refinancing rate of 1%, a scenario similar to past occasions when "the ECB capitulated."

U.S. Is Said to Expand Secret Actions in Mideast
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/25/world/25military.html?scp=1&sq=special...
The secret directive, signed in September by Gen. David H. Petraeus, authorizes the sending of American Special Operations troops to both friendly and hostile nations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa to gather intelligence and build ties with local forces. Officials said the order also permits reconnaissance that could pave the way for possible military strikes in Iran if tensions over its nuclear ambitions escalate.
Historically, the only way to recover from these levels is to start a war. Just sayin'...

I know this is from the area of tinfoil type conspiracy theories, but...
Could this be just a sleight of hand to keep everybody's eyes averted from what's boiling in the Middle East? You know, the active war mongering by a small country that has a deep and cosy relationship with the US. Hint: no, it's not Iran.
