With Now Daily Margin Hikes In Silver, Is The SLV ETF Itself Next?

Tyler Durden's picture

Following relentless margin hikes in silver on various exchanges, here are some thoughts on what may happen as the "regulators" do everything in their power to bring down commodity prices down as the broader population increasingly creates their own gold (and as the case may be silver) standard.

From Shortetflist

Could FINRA raise the margin requirement on the Silver ETF (NYSE: SLV)?

Absolutely.

After trading 200 MM shares per day, along with outpacing the daily
volume in the SPY, it is safe to say that the Silver ETF is leading the
futures at this point so here is the question I pose.

When is Finra going to raise the margin on the SLV ETF like it did on all the leveraged and inverse products a couple of years ago?

Right now to buy the SLV etf eats up about 22K in margin buying power,  imagine if this were doubled?

FINRA and other folks are keenly aware of this trading vehicle,
particularly when an unhealthy market exists.  Now if the Silver ETF
trading settles down to normal levels, probably not much will happen but
if it keeps this crazy pace up,  it is very difficult to rule this out.

Just some food for thought on where this thing could go.

Factor in the margin hikes as well.  CME helping JPM.

Cheats and liars.

Wait till silver gets below 40, then we'll see.

PS. - shorted PSLV premarket, not going to sit through another 10% loss.  Will close EOD and sit tight for a few days.

Buying PSLV here.

crushed just like your prediction of silver toppin' out at 34 for the longest time... just give it a rest meth man. You're hoping to recover while most folks on ZH are just wondering how much they'll profit. The only way silver goes down is if the institutions do what they can to limit the buying of silver (e.g. - raising margin requirements).

How are those oil equities treating you?

Awww, is dey down too?

Too bad you can't own physical oil like I own physical silver.  1% of my physical silver could have been had at a lower price, if I had waited.  But 99% of it would have been had at a much worse price if I had waited.  All the other owners of physical silver are in the same boat.

You're just a timeframe picking douchebag, just like all those morons who told us for DECADES how shitty an investment in silver was because everyone bought above $50 in 1980.

Funny how all the "hard, sound money" advocates are now watching the Hi-Fi Robots bit-flipping SLV, PSLV, etc. like maniacs.

My guess is that 20 years of annual mine production has been "flipped and flopped" back and forth between PSLV, SLV, and the silver contract.....

In just a few days.

Who would have thought that the coin-shillers would see their own favored proxy instrument program-traded by huge robots using electronic digits.

More proof that "Paper" rules over "Things"...LOL...

No it doesn't.  When the FRN goes, all paper goes with it.  Not necessarily immediately, but eventually and completely.

I literally don't know ANYONE who thought SLV was a good proxy instrument.  A very few who were chained to paper through their pensions like PSLV as the best of a bunch of bad options.

My physical silver looks fine to me.

the whole point of the naked shorting is to force the weak hands to give up their silver to stronger hands.

the fact remains the usa government is bankrupt. the dollar is hanging by a thread. oil is strong. gold is barely down. sure i don't like the drop. but the deficits remain. and nobody ever said tptb would go easily into the night.

clearly you are projecting your thoughts on others. sure silver is down and you can gloat. however, there are millions of folks the world over that understand the end game of devaluation, printing and hyperinflation to fund the welfare state. you'll be a buyer of silver at some point. then my hunch is you'll be the biggest silver cheerleader on the board.

actually, no. many of us see silver and gold as do greenspan, volcker and others throughout history. it is the enemy of central banking since it speaks to monetary management. it is seen as one of the few ways for the average guy to protect himself from debasement, devaluation and loss of purchasing power through debauchery of a currency. you're projecting your thoughts yet again with false accusations of silver and gold being God to holders.

you're making a directional bet on the price of silver over a short time span. i'm making a calculated bet on a historical inflection point. big difference in philosophies and approaches. i've made the bet that the center will not hold.

If you plan to take delivery

margin costs don't have any

impact. There are big buyers that

want to take delivery.

The action taken by the

exchanges only will only

allow the large buyers to buy

more for their money. This

shakes out the weak hands

and makes it harder for

manipulation to continue.

Buy physical gold and silver

because fiat currencies are dead.
