NZ Employment Continues To Deteriorate

Cornelius's picture

A release of New Zealand's unemployment information is an interesting experience in reconciling medium-term price action, the general market view and what we are saying in reality.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, we are seeing a 20% increase in unemployment QoQ (the 6th straight quarter of job losses). Curiously, in this case it has been a loss of female vs. male jobs at a clip of roughly 2:1. While New Zealand is still not as bad as the US at 6% overall unemployment, the number is sobering when we look at the kiwi's ~35% appreciation against the dollar. To be sure, some of it is a result of the relative strength of the kiwi (especially after the steep decline from mid-2008) and a bounce off the unrealistically low 0.5 level but we have to wonder if the current price fully accounts for the fundamental view.

Watch the 4 pillar banks of NZ (same 4 banks in Australia). NZ and Australia are not immune from crashing house prices both NZ and here in Australia house prices are 8 times average income, prices have doubled in 6 years. Prices have been stable to date but rising unemployment could change the landscape down under very quickly.

Opefully, despite the wretched USD, the exchange rate will continue to be jolly and someday I'll move to NZ...would love to ski those Southern Alps.

Yes NZ is a nice place if you can get work. IMHO Australia and NZ will be towed along by Asia for many years to come. However our housing situation looks very bubbled to me.

The New Zealand Dollar is one of the 8 most actively traded currency pairs. I'm not sure it has anything to do with Goldman, rather clarifying the global macro picture.

p.s. Thanks from NZ. Really enjoying the ZH Team.

My GS comments were tongue-in-cheek.  Hopefully, they stay the hell away from your pristine country down under, for the most part.

As per GS in NZ...

Very much here. In all three major centres, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Anyone see "Once Were Warriors"?  LOL

Jake Heke: "I bought seafood today - bloody everything! Just wanted to put a smile on her face. Think she'd let me? Not a chance. All I said was that I got laid off. Anybody would've thought I'd told her my prick had dropped off!"
