Obama Confirms Leadership Failure, Pulls Out Mother Of All Mutual Assured Nukes: "Raise Debt Ceiling Or Risk Global Recession"

Tyler Durden's picture

And people made fun of Hank Paulson for threatening with eternal damnation if congress didn't stamp his multi-trillion blank check to bail out his former co-workers from Goldman. In a step that makes the Kashkari-Paulson threat seem like amateur hour, the teleprompter just received its latest high frequency directive from the Wall Street superiors, promptly delivering the latest MAD message to what continues to be perceived as an idiot audience: "Failure by Congress to raise the U.S. debt limit "could plunge the world economy back into recession," President Barack Obama declared Friday, and he acknowledged that he must compromise on spending with Republicans who control the House to avoid such a crisis. Obama urged swift action, saying he doesn't want the United States to get close to a deadline that would destabilize financial markets. He said he was confident Congress ultimately would raise the limit. "We always have. We will do it again," said Obama, who voted against raising the debt limit as a freshman senator from Illinois."

For those keeping score of the President's numerous accolades, this merely underscores that the president is now in contention for the Nobel Prize in hypocrisy: after all compare this statement to Obama's now supremely ironic remark from March 20, 2006: "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better." They sure do. And in order to replace the current failed leadership, they will gladly start with a new president.

From AP:

"I'm the person who is best prepared for us to finish the job so that we're on track to succeed in the 21st century," Obama said. That's the heart of his argument for voters to give him a second term over more than a half dozen Republicans seeking the White House.

As the 2012 campaign gets under way, it's being shaped by a deep disagreement over federal spending in Washington between Republicans who control the House and Democrats in power in the Senate and White House. Obama and Republicans compromised a week ago on a spending bill to avert a government shutdown, a preview of the debate that's certain to dominate the coming months on deficits and the ceiling on money the nation can borrow.

The president said that he doesn't expect either side to get everything it wants in negotiations and that he's pushing for "a smart compromise that's serious."

He warned of dire consequences if the debt ceiling is not raised before it hits its limit of $14.3 trillion; the administration says the latest Congress could possibly act is by early July. But Obama said some longer-term questions about where the government trims its operations will have to be left until after the 2012 presidential election.

"I'm confident that the withdrawal will be significant," he said. "People will say this is a real process of transition, this is not just a token gesture."

So we're going to pin the eventual raise in the debt ceiling on the empty suit Obama and not instead on the hypocritical Congressional Republicans who raised the debt ceiling SIX FUCKING TIMES under Bush?

The only that has happened between Dems and Repubs is that the roles have reversed. They are two sides of the same coin. If you are upset about it now (as you can see by all the supposed "conservative" monaing and wailing) but were cool with it from 2001-2008 then you are just a flaming hypocrite.

Tea Partiers renege on the debts?  That paid for their farmer welfare?

[I want to see Congressman Gospel Singer from Frog Fuck, TN get cut off first and that little bitch from MO get "picked on" with a pitchfork.]

While the majority of American farmers receive no government money at all, at least 23 current members of congress or their families have received government money for their farms -- combining for more than $12 million since 1995 according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group.

The biggest recipient was Rep. Stephen Fincher, a Republican from Frog Jump, Tenn.

While the self-described Tea Party patriot lists his occupation as "farmer" and "gospel singer" in the Congressional Directory, he doesn't mention that his family has received more than $3 million in farm subsidies from 1995 to 2009, according to the Environmental Working Group.

When asked whether he would be willing to see all his subsidies go away, Fincher would not directly say he would no longer take any more subsidies.

"We need a good, better, we need a better farm program and we need to streamline it," he said. "We need to look at many many options. And that's a long way off."

Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo., who also was swept into office with the Tea Party movement, received $774,489 in farm subsidies over the same period, according to the EWG's numbers.

According to the EWG report, Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., received almost $180,000 between 1997 and 2009.

ABC News' Diane Sawyer grilled the lawmakers on the subject in January during her exclusive Tea Party interview with 10 freshmen members of the House and Senate.

"Are you ready to vote against all farm subsidies? That's $20 billion by one estimate, at least," Sawyer asked.

"Well, I think everything should be on the table," Hartzler said. "And, yes, there's a lot of us farmers that have participated in the program."

Sawyer then asked Rep. Stutzman about the more than $100,000 in farm subsidies he received and whether he would vote to cut them.

Stutzman told ABC News that he is in favor of eliminating farm subsidies, including his own.

"Yes, I would vote to eliminate farm subsidies. It manipulates the market," he said.

"And that's the problem here in Washington: The adult conversation, I think, has to be, 'no.'"

Hartzler said she was open to "starting the discussion and look at it."

But she added, "I think we need to make sure that everything is looked at before we just pick on the farmers."

Well,

Senator Burr gave me his word in a letter I received yesterday he is voting "No" to raising the debt ceiling, and he states that is not the answer to our problems, and raising it makes things way worse.  I will hold him to his word. He has voted "No" in the past.

Kay Hagan on the other hand, no response. I guess she doesn't want anyone's vote when elections roll around. I imagine, since she is a Dem anyway, she will support the failed Obma policies and administration.

If you haven't written your Senators yet, there is still time. Tell them to vote "NO" on raising the debt ceiling. Explain why it should not be raised like the 80 previous times.

Not all politicans are bad people, there are some in the Congress that are trying, and want to make the right changes. The problem is there are more crooks than there are good honest people. One more good tea party election, and the game changes severely.

And yes, as much as no one wants to believe it, and I have my doubts too, they are 'your Senators'.  You elected them.  And if you didn't vote, then you have no reason to speak.

Elections don't change anything, unless the right people are put in office. We have been killing ourselves as a nation for the past 8 elections.

Teaparty almost highjacked by social crazys too. It's typical politics get winning party and jump on like a leach.

I wasn't calling you a coward for your opinion. It seems to me many here post and get themselves riled up, but that's it, it stops there. A way to make a difference is to get involved. If you don't like the system, then work to change it. Not whine all day on a financial blog.

The GOP are definitely scared. The teaparty scares the establishment. The first thing they did was adopt it to suppress it.

The community here could create a strong political movement and really create change. The people of the US are ready for change, they voted for change, but the power brokers aren't, they want things to stay the same. If you guys would get off your ass and quit whining, you could make it happen. Now's the time of any time in history besides maybe the original Boston Tea Party.

This community is mostly smart and could make a difference if they wanted to, but from what I've read here for the last couple of years, most people just want to vent. It's easier, you know? That's why you're a coward.

Since it's OK and morally legitimate to steal $14 x 10^12  from and enslave hundreds of millions of people, then surely it's OK to steal an even greater amount.

I recommend enshrining the following definitions in law and then raising the debt ceiling to 999.99 gazillion dollars:

1 zillion = 1 googol plex *  1.39822×10^316 (Skewes number) * 6.022×10^23 (Avogadro's number )

1 bajillion = 1 zillion ^ 1 zillion (exponentation)

1 gajillion = 1 bajillion! (factorial)

1 brazillion = 1 gajillion ↑↑ 1 gajillion (Knuth's up-arrow notation)

1 bazillion = 1 brazillion + Graham's number

1 gazillion = 1 bazillion# (primorial)

Because if it's the latter, that's stupid... Anyone you put in that spot isn't going to "fix" things. If it makes you feel better to blame Obama - which kind of makes sense now that I think about it... by all means. DOWN WITH OBAMA. This line of thinking tells me that:

If..we don't take on more debt,

then...we enter a recession.

What does that tell you about economic "growth?"

Fri, 04/15/2011 - 16:20 | 1173932 Dr. Acula
Dr. Acula's picture

Here's all you need to know about economic growth:

"It is possible to determine in terms of money prices the sum of the income or the wealth of a number of people. But it is nonsensical to reckon national income or national wealth. As soon as we embark upon considerations foreign to the reasoning of a man operating within the pale of a market society, we are no longer helped by monetary calculation methods. The attempts to determine in money the wealth of a nation or of the whole of mankind are as childish as the mystic efforts to solve the riddles of the universe by worrying about the dimensions of the pyramid of Cheops. If a business calculation values a supply of potatoes at $100, the idea is that it will be possible to sell it or to replace it against this sum. If a whole entrepreneurial unit is estimated $1,000,000, it means that one expects to sell it for this amount. But what is the meaning of the items in a statement of a nation’s total wealth? What is the meaning of the computation’s final result? What must be entered into it and what is to be left outside? Is it correct or not to enclose the “value” of the country’s climate and the people’s innate abilities and acquired skill? The businessman can convert his property into money, but a nation cannot." - Ludwig von Mises in Human Action

Finite planet, finite resources.  What you gonna do.  Bring on the recession, crash the system.  We will all still be here.  I can promise you that at least compensation will return to those that are actually worth a shit.  Remember back when people who actually brought real value to the economy (value that other countries wanted) were properly paid.  We have become a land of bankers (paper printers), financial experts (selling paper) and attorneys.  None of which the rest of the world wants to be sold anymore.  We can either take this who clown house down now under our terms, or let the central planners do it under theirs.

Not sure whether its funny, comic or tragic to see the vitriol directed towards Obama. Its not that things would have much different if a Republican was in power. They weren't before 2009. Remember ?

The realy problem is campaign finance. The next person winning will need 1 billion dollars to even have a chance. And when you need that huge purse you have to please a lot of people.

And thats why it does not matter who is in charge things will essentially remain the same. Our cuts in budgets will be for segments of society that do not contribute to campaign finance. So too bad if an impoverished family needs heating oil in winter. On the other hand segments of society that contribute will continue to get away with anything and everything under the sun.

That is the reality. So if you are holding hopes high that a new president comes into office in 2012 and all will be well, think again. Hopefully this gets through to the rational people.

And we should do this because other evil men also exist?

Would you argue that we shouldn't arrest and prosecute child molestors, becuase serial killers exist? And we shouldn't arrest serial killers because there are also rapists in the world?

Its not that there should be no criticism of whats going on. Its all well deserved. But its nothing constructive. More of the cheerleading version you hear at tea party rallies. Its purely on party, idealogue lines. And not based on anything else.

Whereas if you take politics out of it, its crystal clear that no matter who is in power the special interests get what they want and people end up getting screwed. The masses have been taken on a ride with the biggest scam in the history of mankind And that scam  has been systematically carried out during a period of time when both parties have been in power.

The problem is people are divided along party lines. Probably more so than at any other point in our nations history. And that too at a time when people should be united and see what is really ailing the country and what needs to be done to get us out of it. A change of leadership to another party will do nothing. Maybe it will just give a different set of cheerleaders fodder for criticism like when Bush was the President. But at the end of the day it does not solve anything. Ignorance and that too almost half a decade after the economic problems crept into the mainstream is just mind boggling.

And when i see this on ZH (where i attribute the people too be above mainstream intelligence) its even more mind boggling.

If even now the people over here are in the partisan state of mind i can only wonder whats happning on Main Street. And just wonder how much more time will it take before people can awaken and see no matter who is in power they are screwed unless they are on the inside.

The banksters obviously control the US and, most probably, most "developed" countries.  They have the wealth and power to do anything they choose.  If a president decided to turn on them, then he or she would see the same fate as John and Bobby Kennedy.  They are too powerful, but they must be stopped.  The only way to do this, in my view, is for the military to turn on its own government for its own good and expunge the corporatacracy.  They have the might to turn things around.  Or perhaps 4 million second amendment believers.  Is there another way?
