Obama Says NATO Considering Military Options Against Libya

Oops.

From Reuters:

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that NATO was considering military options in response to the situation in Libya.

Obama, speaking after talks with visiting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, said the two countries agreed that violence by the Libyan government against its people was unacceptable.

And some more "insights" from Robert Gates:

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates cautioned on Monday that any foreign military intervention in the crisis in Libya would require international backing.

"I think we will have to monitor the situation very closely," Gates, on a visit to Afghanistan, said when asked about the possibility of an international military response in Libya.

"But I think at this point there is a sense that any action should be the result of international sanction," he told a news conference.

The comments came as government forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi struck at rebels in the east and concern mounted over civilian suffering and a growing exodus of refugees.

Gates said developments in the Middle East had further damaged the image of Iran, where the opposition says at least 79 people were arrested at protest rallies last week that the government denied had even taken place.

"I think where Iran is the loser ... is the contrast between militaries and security authorities in places like Tunisia and Egypt standing aside while people protest against their government, while security services of the Iranian government ruthlessly suppress and kill those who would criticise or protest."

"They (Iran) are losers already in this image across the world," he said.

Gates did not mention Bahrain, where seven people died last month when security forces moved to break up protests in Manama.

Nor did he criticise Saudi Arabia, where activists say security forces on Sunday moved to keep the wave of Arab unrest outside Saudi borders by detaining at least 22 minority Shi'ites who protested last week against discrimination.

I guess Obama will have to consider the fate of the world while eyeing a 12 foot, left to right breaking putt for par. Where does he find the time? http://thecivillibertarian.blogspot.com/2011/03/obama-is-golfing-today-h...

he never plays with woman, playing golf i mean with woman. and some of his female staffers are pretty good. golf is compelling, but it is a good thing to be able to do something better then play golf. i don't think he is very good, so he is compelled because of his ego, to try and try and try harder. he doesn't play zen golf at all†

..and that's how you provide more defenses, cover and tribute for Isreal, without tipping your hand to the people who are paying for it.

Nice move, Bamster.

They are probably thinking the Kosovo model, just bomb them from 10,000'.  No boots on the ground, no real casualties, but keep the Libyan air force off the rebels back.

If they decide to send in troops, then they are dumber than we think.

Why not consider military options against Egypt, Tunisia, Iran, Yemen, Bahrain and most of the Middle East too.  WTF ever happened to respecting a country's sovereignty.  Let them fight it out on their own.  Hell, if NATO wants to clean up a real shithole, go invade Somalia.  I think the whole world is tired of the piracy.  But, they can't go there: the US got there butts handed to them by a bunch of half-starved locals with AK-47s.  No natural resources/too difficult/waste of time/why bother.

So, what's the real agenda here?  That's rhetorical btw.

Only because Clintoon would not allow them to have any armor, and I would add that the number of Somali casualties in 1993 was probably in the thousands.  Only policy via ROE kept the ass kickers from kicking ass.

When shit goes down in Yemen,Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia we will see what Odumbo will do next. If they bomb Liby they will hurt the oppositions movement. Kaddafi is not leaving and the nation is in civil war now and it will be long and bloody. I guess what they are likely to do is have the CIA traffic arms to the Libyan rebels for the years to come. Hoever Yemen looks like its going to explod ein a couple of weeks, and Saudi Arabia will be facing days of rage soon and there will be alot of bloodshed in that nation. The big one is China, they are facing hyperinflation, real estate neutron bomb bubble. Will their be a revolution/civil war in China soon?

China Sends Military to Libya

“FOR a fast rising power, China remains unusually shy about military deployment beyond its shores. But its decision to dispatch four military transport aircraft to Libya and a guided-missile frigate to waters nearby suggests that it might be rethinking its posture. The Ilyushin-76 aircraft took off from the far western region of Xinjiang on February 28th bound for the Libyan city of Sabha. The ship, Xuzhou, which had been engaged in anti-piracy duties in the Gulf of Aden, set sail for the north African coast on February 24th.”
