Obama Seeking Emergency Camp David Meeting, Boehner Just Says No

Tyler Durden's picture

In the most dramatic example of someone give the teleprompter the finger on the debt target (f/k/a debt ceiling, in the pre Federal Reserve days), after earlier it was announced that Obama, so willing to continue the charade, was pushing for a Camp David meeting where the debt ceiling issue would be resolved, bunch-of-fat-old-men-locked-up-in-a-room-nobody-leaving-until-solution-is-reached style, Reuters reports that Boehner has politely refused this latest farcical denouement, and told the White House "that he sees no need to move the negotiations on debt and deficits to Camp David." In other news, it is now 7 days and counting until July 22.

From Reuters:

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, the top U.S. Republican, has told the White House that he sees no need to move the negotiations on debt and deficits to Camp David.

"The speaker has told the White House he sees no need to go to Camp David this weekend," Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said on Thursday.

The White House had been weighing the idea of Camp David talks but no decision had been made and White House aides said there were "currently no plans for that."

Can anyone explain the significance of July 22nd versus August 2nd?  I was under the impression that August 2nd was the date that Geithner runs out of funds to steal from pensions.  So what then what is the relevance of the 22nd?  Is it some sort of drop dead date for giving notice to Federal workers who will be unemployed on a government shutdown?

Game theory would suggest that the U.S. is holding a gun to it's own head on this one. I suppose Russian roulette is entertaining, but what is interesting is that suicide has become a team sport.

all this crap is just WWF Raw without the actual matches, just the interviews with Mean Gene.   how bout this brilliant idea: bring the cameras in and hash it out on live TV.      charge $29.99 for pay-per-view to help reduce the defecit.    i for one would gladly contribute with glee, even though i know that somewhere on the net, i could get it for free.

guess that's too much transparency....oh well...maybe next constitution...

As we approach financial apocalypse, does anyone have an opinion on whether it's better, when the SHTF, to max out a variable rate credit card, or pay it off, cut it up and live on what you can buy with fiat/ PM/ barter?

Update: I ask because I've prepared, but never feel like I've done enough. If the CC becomes meaningless, I'm inclined to leverage it if the time is right.

Unless you can time it perfectly, I'd say it's a moot point.  That is, if you wait until the SHTF, I don't think you're going to find too many places willing to sell you something on credit.  One the other hand, if you're too early (and the SDHTF) you've put yourself in a position of personal financial ruin.  Just my opinion.

Yeah, timing would be crucial. I'm hoping Tyler has a "leverage your personal credit now" article when the time comes, but I don't hold my breath; "if" is not so much a question as "when", and if we all knew that we'd wouldn't need to read ZH.

It's your decision, and the temptation is certainly there to use the plastic near SHTF 'go-time'. Problem is you'll likely have no real advance notice in terms of sufficient time to make the most of your plastic.

Additionally, you will create a trail which the banksters can potentially use to send Xe jackboots to your doorstep if things get bad enough. I guess the way I see it is the best option is the one which allows you to sever as many ties as possible to anything related to the bankstah mafia.

Don't worry about never feeling like you've done enough preparation. Be more worried if you ever feel like you are totally ready, because at that point you're probably half-way there.

Personally, I only feel like I'm OK for a few months after the ballon goes up...which means I could probably make it for 4-6 weeks in reality. Preparation is a never-ending process, particularly this deep into the endgame. There are no easy answers, and unfortunately there are way too few of us.

Great thoughts. Thanks. I do agree that severing ties with the banksta douche-bags is likely a better option--less likely to see jack boots, but more importantly, I think my soul will feel more intact.

I don't want to hijack these negotiations.  However, I'd recommend that we'd be best served by taking the talks down to Sesame Street.  No way we don't get a deal done there...

Can someone tell me how to get to Sesame Street?

They are playing out this little drama against a background of increasing REAL loss of confidence in the currency -- I'm not sure they give much credence to the actual real environment.  Reminds me of the Tropic Thunder premise, where a bunch of war movie actors find themselves in real combat -- but without the laughs or happy ending.

I'd be willing to bet that daytime soaps are better scripted than this government nonsense.

[debt] ceiling raised, or not, the structure's still burning down.

Let's get to the millions in the streets with pitchforks and transporting guillotines to washington part, then it'll be a bit more interesting.

Tell me again why we have a debt limit? According to the Congressional Research Service, since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times. 74! What's the point if having one? Lets just do away with it and let the market decide what our debt limit should be. In the end thats what will happen.

Small possibility of default event, I put it at 5%. The congress critters know the risks of a politically driven default event. In fact, the Bernanke was discussing the topic of "political risk" in his testimony today. The reality is that this drama will pass whether it happens before or after August 2nd. However, the larger story coming out of this is the crumbling US finances and the political disarry coming out of DC. If this debt ceiling raise was difficult, imagine the next one and the one after that. The days of US political and financial stability are slowly coming to an end.

In my opinion, this will take a lot longer to play out then some of the hardcore doomers believe. Remember, treasury debt is close to 70% of GDP. The intragovernmental holdings (debt owed to social security and medicare) is already being defaulted on by way of CPI cooking and other data fudgery.

I think there is a reason for going to camp david, they (meaning everyone except Obama) can't leave or go as easily as they could from the whitehouse.  Also I think it's a technique to intimidate others into doing what he wants by having them on ground that they can't leave easily and/or talk to the press easily.  So in essence he can come out and say things first before they can and make it look like they are the ones messing things up.  I don't like Boehner, but I think he knows the game Obama is playing.
