Obama's Advice To Those Complaining About Surging Gas Prices: Suck It In And Cope

Tyler Durden's picture

As gasoline prices continue to surge day after day (and with WTI touching $109 today this will continue for a long time), the peasantry is getting restless. Not only that but it is getting nosy. In fact today some plebs had the temerity to seek answers from the teleprompter over the festering question of just how long will Bernanke, pardon, UK stagflation, pardon, default Portugal, pardon, healthy worldwide demand keep pushing gas prices to $4, then $5, then $6, and eventually to the price paid in Europe: about $9. The response was straight out of Charlie Munger's (non-frontrunning) playbook: "I'm just going to be honest with you. There's not much we can do next week or two weeks from now," the president told workers at a wind turbine plant (one operated by Spanish company Gamesa). "Gas prices? They're going to still fluctuate until we can start making
these broader changes, and that's going to take a couple of years to
have serious effect." And we doubt Obama's hard core union electorate will be happy at the following stab at Channel Stuffing Motors: "If you're complaining about the price of gas and you're only getting 8
miles a gallon, you know," Obama said laughingly. "You might want to
think about a trade-in.
" Let's hope the people don't get the same idea about the presidential office two years from now, even after the $1 billion spent on TV ads. As to the core question, we were surprised Bill Dudley was not present at Obama's side explaining how deluded complainers should just have a chilled glass of unleaded 98 Octane with their main course of deflationary iPad 2.

More from AP:

The president spoke at a town hall meeting at Gamesa Technology Corp., a Spanish company that makes giant turbines that use wind to generate electricity. According to the White House, it is the first overseas company of its kind to set up shop in the U.S.

Back in Washington, negotiations continued on a budget deal to avert a government shutdown Friday and Obama urged lawmakers to get it done. The president said he wants to cut spending, but not at the expense of cutting priorities like energy and education.

As fuel prices rise because of growing demand worldwide and political
unrest in oil-producing nations in North Africa and the Middle East,
drivers are feeling pinched at the pump. Republicans blame Obama and his
policies and he, in turn, is striving to show the public that he gets
it.

In the meantime, if the middle class repeats "Inflation is transitory" three times while starting in the mirror, a genocidal Chairsatan will appear behind it and slice its throat.

Gasoline prices rose another 2 cents Tuesday to a new national average
of just over $3.68 a gallon, according to AAA and other sources. Obama's
visit to Gamesa was his fourth energy event since March 11. He's
scheduled a fifth for Friday in Indianapolis.

It's not all bad news. By the looks of things, er, promises, the gas situation will normalize... some time in 2025.

Obama said he wants to move toward "a future where America is less
dependent on foreign oil, more reliant on clean energy produced by
workers like you." That will happen by reducing oil imports, tapping
domestic energy sources and shifting the nation to renewable and less
polluting sources of energy, such as wind, the president says. He has
set a goal of reducing oil imports by one-third by 2025.

And following tomorrow's ECB hike, and following Europe's subsequent economic deterioration, the only bank that continues to be uber-loose will be stuck in that mode as it seeks to remain the "dynamo" of ponzi growth, meaning Obama voters who complain about gas prices at $3.70 will soon have even more fun complaining when the gas price ends being an anagram of those three numbers in a a year or so.

Tyler - for a guy who professes that the American political system is broken, your commentary is fairly chock full of partisan talking points.

Here in America, only one political party at a time is in the oval office -- The Republicons (if by some miracle they get to the oval office in 2012), will receive every bit of cynicism and snark that the Decepticrats are now getting -- deal with it!

Right. Because in your world, calling out hypocrisy is partisan. I think not. Continue spinning that how you like - you convince no one but your peers.

Business Insider - ( Tmosley )

@kryptic

Sort of like the cost of gold in Zimbabwe dollars has now reached infinite. That's a bubble waiting to burst right there.

OR its a symptom of an irreversible trend, that is, those who have the power of the printing press are unable to stop printing money, because if they do, the whole system will collapse. This is somewhat like a case where a man has an arrow in his heart. If you don't get it out, he'll die slowly (ie leaving the status quo will kill the economy). If you pull it out, he'll bleed out in a second (raise rates high enough to stop inflation, ie 10-20%). If you push it further in so it goes out the back (printing more money), you'll do more damage, and he'll probably still wind up dead.

Seeking Alpha - ( Tmosley )

I have noticed that wheat is incredibly undervalued as well. I sometimes buy supplies for my mother's bakery, and I have been surprised at the persistently low price of flour, only ~6.50 for a 25 pound bag. This is now half the price of sugar (which has gone up recently). Observing this, I recommended that she stock up now, before the price starts adjusting with rising inflation.

Mining stocks tend to blow up at the end of a bubble, not the beginning.

The central banks and the Feds have done a good job talking down gold, though. I'm using this pullback to increase my positions across the whole industry, both in terms of miners and bullion.

What the fuck are you talking about? I'm the senior manager of a chemistry firm. I have a safe completely filled with silver bullion, along with a small folder of gold bullion. I have a metal building on a bit of bailout property filled with enough food to last two years, and seed to last forever. I'm not hurting for money, either in gold, or in FRNs.

You're a bloody coward is what you are. This isn't spinning the wheel, this is a calculated economic decision. You would be making an agreement to sell me a coin at an agreed upon price on a certain day. This is not gambling. All it is is me proving that you are full of nothing but empty words. You are worthless. Enjoy your USD fired stove and rat meat.

Slashdot - ( Tmosley )

The common people lived as slaves well before the industrial revolution. The new jobs gave the people more choices, just as it is doing now in China. As their industrial output increases, and more and more positions become available to skilled and unskilled laborers, the pay will go up, and the conditions will get better. Even now, the conditions are far better than the lives they would lead without those jobs, as rural laborers (think cotton slaves from the American south, only without the actual ownership of the people by the masters (so there is no incentive for the masters to look out after their investments). One false move in that field, and your whole family is dead. Things get better as their economy develops, with or without reforms being shoved down the throats of industrialists by big government. In fact, such regulation only slows development. When you are forced to pay more, you have to fire some people (or shut down altogether), costing the workers their jobs. If conditions were so bad, they could have left and went back to their lives in the country. They stay because they are getting paid more.

Also, the yuan is artificially low against the dollar. Once the Chinese let their currency float, that salary will start to look a lot better, especially as we start to lose more and more jobs in THIS country (due in no small part to our onerous regulations that drive companies overseas to places like China).

http://news.slashdot.org/story/09/02/15/2020200/High-Tech-Misery-In-Chin...

If that's the case, then they are actually encouraging businesses to not come to their state, lest their internet operations be subjected to a costly tax. Large businesses like Apple or Amazon, which do such a large amount of online business, will probably end up stopping all operations in that state.

If you tax something, you get less of it. This is kindergarden economics.

Says the guy who has done literally WEEKS of research on me.  This isn't the first time you've done this, kid.  You think I forgot?

How DARE someone be prepared for trouble, using simple and low cost methods like storing seed, or profitable, like owning gold or silver.

Funny that you go to such lengths because of your own failings.  I don't chase down your comments across the internet.  Hell, I rarely even look at past comments by people on this very board.  I tangle with you because you are wrong ALL the time, while trying to pass yourself off as some sort of expert.  You cherry pick your stocks, and tell us all about how super smart you are, yet you are still driving.  Why would a hot shot trader like you be driving?  You should be on the internet, doing research, and, you know, TRADING.  If your trades are as good as you claim, and your income over the past year is as good as you claim, you should have hundreds of thousands of dollars saved up, and you should be making 10% a week with your stellar calls.

But you aren't, because you are a lying sack of shit.  I called you on it, and now you are pissed off enough to spend weeks trying to find something from my past to attack me with, but you can find NOTHING, so you resort to puerile insults, random cut and pastes, and attacking whole schools of thought, which happen to have been proven right over and OVER again, and are being proven right now.

tldr: Spalding is a butthurt faggot who needs to spend more time delivering furniture and less time pretending to be a super trader on the internet.

Lol' .........

More assertions with no proof. I have friends in high places which afforded me the luxury of starting a trucking business. Ninety percent of my business comes from two of the largest machine shops in the midwest. I also billed out two grand in printing all the work done from my cell phone subbing out the print ( banners and a backlit sign - double sided ) the rest of the work was done in adobe illustrator at night. Total billing this week $3200.00 not bad for a delivery boy. What do you want to talk about dollar denominated debt, money velocity, securitization, inter bank lending, manufacturing, printing cmyk - prepress - digital - offset - packaging, religion, equities - trading  ???? What ever you want, I forgot more than you know on most topics ....

All my stock picks are early.  I have been posting about GLUU for 12 weeks now, everyone on ZH is sick of seeing GLUU in my post. But guess what dumb fuck its up 100% in that time .... Same with MPEL up big. Almost every stock I posted about in the last five months went on a twenty percent run. XOM at $59, Rimm at $44, X at $44, Aig at $46, NVDA at $14, ZEUS at $21, a new one for you from two weeks ago TTM at $25 .... Runners all mover 30% and Tata will do the same.

Same thing I ask every other big mouth, you pick five stocks ( miners whatever ) I pick five, loser hits the road. You man or mouse ..... ? And before you ask, no, I'm not picking a sector, I have more skill than that .... I pick five, you pick five .....

Also, I thought you never posted on Business Insider ? Lol' .... Blog Whore, weeks of searching nope, type in ( tmosley comments ) into google, thousands of your bullshit post to choose from .... Lol

lol, and now you're trying to tell us that you make $2000 a week doing printing from your PHONE!?  Christ, I've heard some whoppers in my day, but that takes the FUCKING CAKE.  Like any fucking business has never heard of KINKOS.  And all of that is beside the point.  If you're a super trader, you shouldn't need to be doing that crap.  Your ass should be spending your time stacking paper to the ceiling off all those 100% trades you've been making.

Look, I know drivers.  There is a saying in the shipping industry--the easiest way to tell when a driver is lying is to watch his lips.  When they move, he's lying.  Well, your lips are flapping at maximum velocity, driver.

You are so stupid you can't understand that I don't play stocks.  Fuck your little games.  Lets hear about your portfolio.  Give it to us, complete.  Put it on the record, then we will see how well you do.  I've been on the record for ages.  95% silver, 5% gold.  You don't have to give amounts, which I know you are embarrassed about--just give percentages.  Or hell, give your five little stocks.  Whatever.  There isn't shit that is going to beat my portfolio for long, save perhaps out of sheer dumb luck.

You really need to move your lips less, driver.

Well, one little problem is that Europe is geographically close together so trains make a lot of sense. The U.S. is spread out, so reproducing the European train system means laying a lot of track. That being said, the European Metro systems within major cities are excellent, and it would be a great thing if we could reproduce that in our cities.

For once I agree with Obama. Rising gasoline prices reflect the reality of peaking oil production and growing demand from development countries with huge populations. This is free market at work. Government should not attempt to suppress the price artificially. People need to learn to live within our means, not try to continue the lavish and wasteful life style by driving gas gazzler SUVs.

If the free market were really working we'd be drilling offshore and at Anwar and we'd be processing oil shale...the drilling permits have been slow to come because Obama has a different vision of the world...he loves the high price of gas because it furthers his cause, to do anything which would lower the price of gas goes against his vision.  Fuck his vision!  He is a self righteous egotistical prick.

No criticism intended, but you guys should read The Long Emergency by Kunstler and undersand what peak oil is all about.  The entire American economy is premised on high quality, cheap oil. No apologies needed there, but that particular commodity is in short supply as compared to growing world demnd (India, China).

But the current spike in oil prices is not only demand but the devaluation of the dollar which is the intention of QE.  Obama does not control that - Wall Street does.

I strongly disagree with your assessment X - The price of oil is being driven by banks that are speculating by virtue of Central Bank largesse - long spec oil is more than 400 million barrels per the CFTC's CoT report - Gasoline demand peaked in September 2009 - Conservation is a good thing & we should all be good stewards of our environment, however, with the Cushing, Oklahoma PADD 2 oil inventories at an all-time high of 41.9 million barrels how is that indicative of a 'FREE MARKET'?

Looks like the reality based community junked your wanton fact usage. When the fiat bubble bursts oil will be cheaper again as consumption drops along with the speculative dollar. Those that wail But China! ignore the bubble driving their demand as well. The poster above calling for $9 gas isn't going to like it when the "fatties" replace the ball in his mouth with a bit and ride him to work.

Here is the conspiratorial and suspicious provenance of Obama's Social Security number as laid out in the US District Court suit filed under the FOIA against the Social Security Administration.

It's great reading by itself but it lends credibility to the birth certificate cover up. Obama hiding is something critical to his character:

this is stupid and detracts from the real problems with Obama as president.  Do you not think that the McCain campaign sifted through everything, VETTING Obama.  Well, maybe that's wrong, cause McCain had as his running mate someone who wasn't properly vetted.  But my pt. is that to beat this dead horse about Obama's birth certificate is a waste of time.  His lack of leadership and Bush-Siamese twin agenda is the problem. I'm sure he and his handlers love it that so many people are pounding away at something this stupid while he gets away with bailing out the bankers, expanding war, using more drone power than Bush did, among other things.  He's done nothing but out neo-Con the neo-Cons.

quite right lynnybee, you hit the nail on the head!

MR [Wayne Madsen Report] has discovered CIA files that document the agency’s connections to institutions and individuals figuring prominently in the lives of Barack Obama and his mother, father, grandmother, and stepfather.

President Obama’s own work in 1983 for Business International Corporation, a CIA front that conducted seminars with the world’s most powerful leaders and used journalists as agents abroad, dovetails with CIA espionage activities conducted by his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham in 1960s post-coup Indonesia on behalf of a number of CIA front operations, including the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Ford Foundation. Dunham met and married Lolo Soetoro, Obama’s stepfather, at the East-West Center in 1965. Soetoro was recalled to Indonesia in 1965 to serve as a senior army officer and assist General Suharto and the CIA in the bloody overthrow of President Sukarno.

Well back in the days ... when banks were solvent and not sucking at the government teat, it was a business deal pure and simple. You lent the banks money (via savings account) and they took a portion of that money and invested it and made money for themselves - a portion of which was returned to the depositor in the form of interest.

If a bank no longer has the ability to do this without the discount window, then they should be declared insolvent and shut down.

no, sir.   my mom in the 1950's & 60's never had to work.    the typical family (dad, mom & children) earned enough with one wage earner to pay their bills.   During that time of history, the average family's income was enough to pay bills & still have HALF THEIR WAGES left over as discretionary to either save in a bank, or put towards an appliance purchase or vacation.    It was after NIXON broke the ties to gold that the average family just could not make it anymore on Dad's wages alone & good ol' Mom had to now find work.

Yes, that's my story & I'm sticking to it !    All of society's ills today can be directly attributed to the monetary system & Wall St. policy of driving wages down.

Sincerely ...........

The Fed, by inflating the money supply, transferred wealth to those at the top of the money supply... at the expense of everyone else via inflation.

So unless your Mom is married to one of the stakeholders in a PD or other MIC corporation... then the Fed definitely made her family poorer, making it difficult to make ends meet unless she took a job too.

Of course.  When you inflate away, people's standard of living falls.  When two work instead of one, it goes back up.

Then inflation eats away at that.

So, people maintain the standard of living through the use of credit.

Then that cannot keep pace and guess what?

We arrive at today.

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day....

That's right, they didn't have the green thing in her day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back her day......

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she's right. They didn't have the green thing in her day......

Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts, "wind and solar power" really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day......

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.....

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then......

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then......

Back then, people took the streetcar and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus, instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint......

But that old lady is right. They didn't have the green thing back in her day.......

Lynnybee,

I agree with you on some points but not all. I'm not sure all women wanted to stay at home during the 50's and 60's and maybe wouldn't want to do so now. That being said, I absolutely agree with your observation that families used to be able to make it on one income.

But ... when my mom was stay-at-home she made most of our meals from scratch (except for Kraft Dinner). I also remember her making jam and jellies and pickeling (not sure about spelling on that one) stuff. And she sewed - most of which I hated wearing (but did) and she did make a few knock-out outfits.

Sometimes when I look at how much my siblings' kids have in material goods, I feel sorry for them.

So I guess what I'm suggesting is that is may still be possible to live on one income provided you can do away with many consumer goods and services.

Disclosure: I really like travel, great restaurants and comfort and hope to hire a cleaning person soon.

My wife didn't want kids. Then my wife didn't want to quit her job. Now my wife wants to live in a trailer, stay home and have ten kids. Feminism was all about making being a woman shameful when there is nothing to be ashamed about. Women birth babies and men go to war. You should have equal respect for each but our society is so royally fucked up we want men to act like women or adolescents and women to act like men or cunts. Whatever. It is just like fiat money. Fiat bullshit culture will fail or be replaced sooner or later. Just be careful what it is replaced by. You'll pull my sig sauer from my cold dead hand before I bow my head to moohumpette. Jews and fags are welcome to live in my attic if it comes to that shit.

I suppose it is the thought that counts.

We are really spoiled. I was in Europe a few ago and gas was over $6 a gallon. My advie: learn to save more, drive less back and forth to the malls and stop buying your kids the newest $500 gadget that comes out.

..And just accept that evil forces beyond your control have ultimately made you into a peasant for life.

agreed herman.  i've been living at minimum cost for several years already.  there is no room to cut more out.  screw this invasion of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.  time for rioting in the streets i see, just like the middle east.

I've already decided that, should gas hit $5 or my salary get rolled back, I'll just default on my credit cards.  Let the fucking banks eat a little of the shit sandwich they've created.

Nineteen junks (so far). I'm wondering what exactly you said that offended so much. Was it the horrible truth that we are spoiled. No, that can't be it. It is self evident. Perhaps it was the advice to stop being a mindless consumer? That might have pushed a few buttons. I think that it must have been the observation that we depend too much on a 3,00 pound piece of metal to move our flabby bodies down to Mickey D's. In any case, well done. Ninteen junks for three truthful sentences. I'm impressed.

I'm amazed myself.

There's a great deal of anger about the fact that gasoline is going to continue getting more expensive, and much of it comes from folks who claim to love "free markets."

It won't go both ways.  Free markets aren't going to make gasoline cheaper in the future.  May as well start considering how to deal with the rising price, rather than throwing tantrums at the folks who point it out as a reality.

I'm still amazed that we as a nation have not demanded to start a conversion in our transportation industry to nat gas. If we started in the heavy haul sector that transport's your average carrot 1400 miles to market place. With a conversion to clean energy that actually works, nat gas will power semi's properly. We should be demanding this fuel be used NOW.

But no, instead our congress argues about the EPA preparing to tax Co2 emmissions on farting cow's. You heard it, that is a fact. Farting Cow's, cows that pass gas.

Unreal, while we have companies in the wing's that can get a large number of over the road fleet's on nat gas now.

Look up ticker symbol CLNE, for example. Diesel is a easy conversion to Nat Gas. We have a hug supply of Nat Gas available and we don't have to fight phony war's for it.

I don't blame the folks that are as upset about the gulf spill as I am, then stay on land. Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, North Dakota and Penn> have huge proven safe supplies.

Yes, I'm biased about BP, they fucked our firm out of 3 million on the spill, after working our asses off on the clean up, oh we can't find your P.O. When we shut down our Hopedale facility, it must have been eaten by a flying monkey. Well, here is the copy, well that man that signed that did not have approval to do so, lol.

But, we should as a country demand the fucking senate to finally pass this and atleast buy sometime to get our solar, wind to the point of usefullness.

Some of the pipe structures are in place for a company like CLNE Clean Energy to ramp this up now. Some area's like Fed Ex and US postal are starting but that is a drop in the bucket. We need truck stop's and fueling station's now in place.

If you ever hear that Nat Gas will not power a semi, that is not true at all. It does a very impressive job and is fairly simple to convert. I know there are plan's to give tax credit's etc in place now for conversion, but my arguement is, we have lost 3 year's on this fuel that we as a country do not need to behind the eight ball after the fucking bankster bail out's.

I would ask that we all look at usefull alt fuel's and green powers that actually work and are cost effective to our public now. We also could be creating very high paying jobs in this field as well that we all know are needed badly right now.

Sarc on now/ but not if your a bankster fuck> If you don't think clean energy is a right now alt fuel, then come to my ranch and buy a over price horse to save oil so I can keep BTFD. I'm still light on the physical silver lol.

Thanks for reading my post, if you don't agree I understand, I just personally know this field well and have a passion for clean fuels we don't have to depend on import's for and to keep our troops at home and not give the bankster's a reason to send them off to B.S. war's.
