Obama's Advice To Those Complaining About Surging Gas Prices: Suck It In And Cope

Tyler Durden's picture

As gasoline prices continue to surge day after day (and with WTI touching $109 today this will continue for a long time), the peasantry is getting restless. Not only that but it is getting nosy. In fact today some plebs had the temerity to seek answers from the teleprompter over the festering question of just how long will Bernanke, pardon, UK stagflation, pardon, default Portugal, pardon, healthy worldwide demand keep pushing gas prices to $4, then $5, then $6, and eventually to the price paid in Europe: about $9. The response was straight out of Charlie Munger's (non-frontrunning) playbook: "I'm just going to be honest with you. There's not much we can do next week or two weeks from now," the president told workers at a wind turbine plant (one operated by Spanish company Gamesa). "Gas prices? They're going to still fluctuate until we can start making
these broader changes, and that's going to take a couple of years to
have serious effect." And we doubt Obama's hard core union electorate will be happy at the following stab at Channel Stuffing Motors: "If you're complaining about the price of gas and you're only getting 8
miles a gallon, you know," Obama said laughingly. "You might want to
think about a trade-in.
" Let's hope the people don't get the same idea about the presidential office two years from now, even after the $1 billion spent on TV ads. As to the core question, we were surprised Bill Dudley was not present at Obama's side explaining how deluded complainers should just have a chilled glass of unleaded 98 Octane with their main course of deflationary iPad 2.

More from AP:

The president spoke at a town hall meeting at Gamesa Technology Corp., a Spanish company that makes giant turbines that use wind to generate electricity. According to the White House, it is the first overseas company of its kind to set up shop in the U.S.

Back in Washington, negotiations continued on a budget deal to avert a government shutdown Friday and Obama urged lawmakers to get it done. The president said he wants to cut spending, but not at the expense of cutting priorities like energy and education.

As fuel prices rise because of growing demand worldwide and political
unrest in oil-producing nations in North Africa and the Middle East,
drivers are feeling pinched at the pump. Republicans blame Obama and his
policies and he, in turn, is striving to show the public that he gets
it.

In the meantime, if the middle class repeats "Inflation is transitory" three times while starting in the mirror, a genocidal Chairsatan will appear behind it and slice its throat.

Gasoline prices rose another 2 cents Tuesday to a new national average
of just over $3.68 a gallon, according to AAA and other sources. Obama's
visit to Gamesa was his fourth energy event since March 11. He's
scheduled a fifth for Friday in Indianapolis.

It's not all bad news. By the looks of things, er, promises, the gas situation will normalize... some time in 2025.

Obama said he wants to move toward "a future where America is less
dependent on foreign oil, more reliant on clean energy produced by
workers like you." That will happen by reducing oil imports, tapping
domestic energy sources and shifting the nation to renewable and less
polluting sources of energy, such as wind, the president says. He has
set a goal of reducing oil imports by one-third by 2025.

And following tomorrow's ECB hike, and following Europe's subsequent economic deterioration, the only bank that continues to be uber-loose will be stuck in that mode as it seeks to remain the "dynamo" of ponzi growth, meaning Obama voters who complain about gas prices at $3.70 will soon have even more fun complaining when the gas price ends being an anagram of those three numbers in a a year or so.

Since NG is so great, why should we want to involve the goverment in a conversion?  The technology is out there today.

Just give it a few years.  When gasoline is $8 or $12 a gallon, everyone will figure it out.  There's no benefit in *more* government intervention in these markets.  People will adapt, I'm sure.

I would love to see where the technology is out there today but I won't hold my breath.  Every time some asshole goes on and on about converting a vehicle to CNG, they always forget to mention that they have 1 of the 3 years of the 2 truck models that a kit exists for and oh yeah they also cost $25K.  Yeah, I'll get right on that, let me throw away my perfectly servicable car to buy a pricy used truck and take out another full vehicle loan to have it converted by some fly-by-night outfit 4 states away.  Think of the hundreds of dollars in gas I'll save this year!  Whoopee!

Yep. If free markets had their way, Americans would be paying around $9 a gallon for gas. That cost has been kept artificially low because the US is dollar is the reserve dollar. But that is changing ....

It is kind of like telling kids the free ride is over - hence Libya - but maybe I'm just too cynical.

If gasoline prices had been allowed to rise without intervention then alternative forms of energy would have been supported by the long term rise in non-subsidized gas prices and the cost of those energy sources would be dropping with increases in technology and scale of production.

So you see, the government has screwed us once again while gleefully killing foreign kids and lining the pockets of their cronies. That doesn't happen in a free market.

+10000000.

I am not sure when sacrificing for the nation became an unAmerican thing to do.

And that's when most of the critical resources we consume are found in countries that do not exactly like us. And when you pay that $3.5 to $4 per gallon at the pump that money ends up going to someone that may actually hate us. And this is in April just wait till May.

So why is it so bad to conserve, and be smart out our usage of natural resources.

I am not sure when sacrificing for the nation became an unAmerican thing to do.

It became questionable in 1913, suspect in 1933, unfashionable in 1971, partially unAmerican in 2001, and completely unAmerican to 'sacrifice for the nation' in 2008.

But in theory, deliveries should be cheaper by Tricycle? In UK petrol (gas) is about $9 Imperial gallon which causes more drivers to go slower in the slow lane I've noticed. I also read that Auto Breakdown calls are going up for 'Out of Gas' and indeed, driving off without paying at the pumps is increasing.

But the most proportion of european fuel costs are taxes, of course.

(Bush) is sincere about finding a long-term solution for the cost of energy. "The American people have got to understand that, here in the White House, we're concerned about high gas prices.

"If there was a magic wand to wave, I'd be waving it, of course,'' the president said, standing beneath an overcast sky on a chilly morning outside the Oval Office. "If there was a magic wand, I'd say, 'Drop price...' There is no magic wand right now.''

"If you're complaining about the price of gas and you're only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know," Obama said laughingly. "You might want to think about a trade-in."

Oh great news. Obama is going to give up his 2 mile per gallon armorered cadillac and his 75 gallon per hour armored helicopter and his 600 lbs of fuel per hour 747. Because he's not going to be president hipocrit like every other president hipocrit in history.

Wed, 04/06/2011 - 23:30 | 1144037 chindit13

Fixed wing aircraft might be efficient (even with Michelle's butt on board), but a 747 burning above 4000 gallons per hour of Jet A, at just under 7 pounds per gallon, works out to about 28000 pounds per hour.  Also, Air Force One never travels alone, so one must add in the fuel of the accompanying aircraft.  Same for the helicopter, which always travels with an escort.  Hillary, as well as any other Cabinet level official going international, gets at least a C-17, another thirsty one.  Heck, even full bird Colonels and above get Lears, Citations or Gulfstreams.  Incidentally, a GAO study found that the cost of gas, delivered securely, to the US military in Afghanistan is just under $400/gallon.

Yes, I'm a pedant, but I believe this data further enhances the point in your original comment.  Imperial Presidency indeed.

Obamas problem is, and why he will not be reelected, the situation with gas prices will become gradually but surely worse:

http://saposjoint.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2626&start=0#p30486

At some point during this, people will start to join the dots between Obamas actions and resulting persisting oil price hike gradient. Price during elections will be back to 160-180 USD for Brent (not shown in detail on the chart).

Before that, oil etc will have driven the USA back into a stable recession in q1 2012, which will not increase his chances.

There is plenty of domestic natural gas available. If we only got 60-70 years from that it would give time for renewable energy to mature.
