Oh, I'm quite familiar with the paper. And for what it was, an assessment of the unusualness of the options, it was good. The conclusions, however, were wrong. The option buying in question, let's just start with the aviation puts, were nailed down to two primary sources.
1. A single instution that was using the puts to cover a large stock buy. In otherwords, the went long the stock and bought puts to protect their downside.
2. A newsletter that suggested the investment some days earlier and prompted a number of small, individual investors to buy otherwise suspicious looking puts.
Take off the tin foil hat and poke around for yourself.

Agree with all of the above, though I am willing to argue that some of the movements you mention I see as useful as moments in a language game rather than positions to rest in. For instance, a radical feminist stance might be a good place for a woman to visit to understand and heal from some injustices, but it should, IMV, be seen as a place to visit, not live. In other words a stage of healing that you move on from.
