Onward And Upward

Marla Singer's picture

As you may have noticed last week, we've been tweaking the site for performance.  You guys have been so ravenous that we've gone ahead and added another server to boot.  As usual, we like to try and do these upgrades late on the weekends.  We finished the move last night but some database problems this morning made the site kind of flaky and so we reinstalled to correct the problem this afternoon.  Unfortunately, a good number of recent user comments were axed in the process and if you signed up with a new account today you might have to do it again.

Our apologies.  From our sysadmin:

Last night we attempted a rather foolish/non-tested method for moving the Database across the world, which resulted in the corruption of several columns. This became evident as the day wore on and the http daemon attempted (and failed miserably) to parse php code that was of the wrong byte size – thus causing it to Seg Fault. We worked all day trying to pull the Database out of hell and back into some living, breathing, form but it became entirely too obvious this wasn’t going to happen, so we reverted back to the last stable version and re-imported. As such is the case, the comments section was lost – as were any updates users made to their profiles and to the forums.

Everything is working now (that is to say it’s not completely fucked – we should all take note that “working” is quite open for all manners of sin).  We beg your patience – but that aside, we’ll be updating the backup registrar every two hours until further notice to ensure non-fucked-ness.

Thanks and have a pleasant day.

On the bright side, it appears that this is the last of our major development efforts.  The new server is blazing fast and looks to be able to suit our needs even somewhat beyond the foreseeable future.  You can look forward (we think) to lag free loading, reduced cache times (for our anonymous users) and (excepting perhaps a few breaking in issues that always seem to crop up) smooth sailing for awhile.  Thanks for bearing with us the last two weeks.  Because our development team is small and poor, we were forced to beta a lot of changes right in the open.

As this completes our development timeline, you should also expect to see the old site at blogspot slowly fade.  We will likely leave it up indefinately, but we won't be posting new artciles there after a point.  Probably midweek or so.

Since the heavy lifting is done, we can now concentrate on some of the features you guys have been asking for.

And watch out.  Even now, Tyler Durden, fresh from his Eastern European tour, is speeding this way in a Towncar purloined from JFK's Long Term Parking.

Stay tuned!

My German friend calls everything east of Germany 'the ass of Europe'.

I hope TD comes back with some insights into whether Europe is about to get its ass handed to it.

Easy with seterotypes on the stairs. Your Aryan friend should be reminded that "the ass of Europe" never started world wars, nor they attempted genocide on industrial scale. Not to mention that the western civilization as we know it started in the Balkans, with the ancient Greeks (democracy, anyone?).

Not one product that we seen Billy Mays push on late night TV could match the speed in which Germans cleared their mind of any guilt regarding the WWII and the unspeakable suffering they brought upon other people.

Absolutely fantastic; these sets could become a regular fundraiser source to help with those server costs.

Any word on the full feed for subscribers? I am a big google reader on my iPhone guy when I am out and about and it would be nice to be able to see the full stories instead of just the teaser.

BTW, good job making drupal work for you.  I know it is quite a task to get everything configured the way you want it.

FWIW, there are still a few items that are served up without Expires headers

$ curl -I http://www.zerohedge.com/misc/menu-leaf.png HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Tue, 14 Jul 2009 03:01:57 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) DAV/2 PHP/5.1.6 Last-Modified: Thu, 09 Feb 2006 08:36:01 GMT ETag: "94011c-c2-8098de40" Accept-Ranges: bytes Content-Length: 194 Content-Type: image/png

Also, the Javascript and CSS files aren't being gzip'd; might want to check those mod_deflate settings.

That said, the site seems fast, so, no worries! Sorry to hear about the DB move, those are stressful indeed and no fun when they go bad.

European finance, sounds exiting. I bet EU will bring "wish the problem away" economic policy to the whole new level. : ) The wishing away efforts by our government will surely look amateurish compared to them. What is the average leverage level for a typical EU based bank, 50 to 150? rofl.
