"Operation Payback" Crashes VISA Website In Under One Minute As It Seeks Revenge From Second Credit Card Processor
After taking out MasterCard.com earlier, the hacker organization Anonymous Operation, via its WikiLeaks supporting Operation Payback has just launched its attack on visa.com. And, lo and behold, Visa.com is now down.

As of this posting, the operation has succeeded in under one minute: www.visa.com is down.
For those who haven't figure it out yet - mess with hackers at you own peril.
Also, didn't the New York Fed refuse Assange discount window access or something? This New York Fed: www.newyorkfed.org

Not if youre good enough.
or in russia or china. if the 'leader' of this 'lets crash this thing now' movement in this country, he will be hunted down like a rabbit with dogs after him, starting before now. run rabbit run!
Standard procedure is to have at least 5 levels of cover. You own some network, have that own another, then repeat to 5 levels deep.
You need serious hacking skills to even attempt this but it's almost impossible to break.
The interesting part about anonymous' attack is that it is generally not "malicious", but rather it is simply a very large number of people getting onto the website in question and refreshing constantly, or sending simple requests. This is NOT illegal. Even if it were, they would be unable to tell the difference between a hacker and a regular person sitting there trying to get the page to load. It would be literally impossible to prosecute, even under a totalitarian regime. In addition, the posts advertising the raids are made on /b/, where they can disappear from being accessible in a few minutes, and disappear from being able to forensically trace within hours (as the hard drives are written/overwritten so often).
These "Hack-tivists" are doing God's Work!
Help! i can't log on to visa.com website. why i would want to log on...i dunno..
If they want to hurt Visa, don't take down the main website. Take down whatever IP's the payment processing gateways operate through
They can't. This is the best they can do. Who cares if you take visa.com off line. Rather easy to take down any website. The real issue is getting information. That's virtually impossible.
Much ado, once again, about nothing.
OH now heres Harry to lay down da reel troof about HACKING since he's the foremost expert around here of course...Mr Knowitall who is ALWAYS wrong.
Well, Akak showed yesterday that he is literally a professional troll. He is writing papers on the psychology of "permabears". At least one is available online.
Well Harrys next project should be an introspective look at the psychology of psychopaths.
He will be busy. The poster boy for euthsanasia (Harry) has an incredibly busy speaking engagement schedule these days.
akak was pointing that fact out months ago. there are plenty of us who have known harry's game for a while...unfortunately (or fortunately, if you're harry), continually pointing it out for the benefit of newbies gets tiresome and annoying fast.
I had forgotten about it. However, continuously pointing it out ruins his "experiment", and is the only real way to get him to go away.
Define "they".......
It's not the best some can do or have done.
What what WHAT -- you say I have all your activity logs ah hell, that's the best they can do back to sleep.
Harry you are a funny funny dude.
You think there is not a Bradley Manning working at Visa or MC or any of the national switches/processors. REALLY?
Getting information is virtually impossible. ?????
You are so clueless it hurts to read the gibberish you believe.
Anon don't want ur filez they want ur newsfeedz.
Reuters or GTFO
"The real issue is getting information. That's virtually impossible."
Wrong again Harry, very wrong.
http://www.privacyrights.org/data-breach
++++ One plus for VISA, One for MC, and one for Amazon, and one for PayPal...
Can they please get...
cnbc.com
...go ahead and make that permanent.
First, these are not hackers. They're script kiddies who are expressing their infantile rage at perceived injustice with acts of vandalism. Second, www.visa.com is down? So what. It's not like that will interfere with credit card processing. Screw with that and then watch what happens..
How about making payments to the credit card or checking balance and transactions. Surely you need visa.com for that? Can't imagine they can handle all that traffic via call centers.
Who "makes payment...or checks balances and transactions" at visa.com?? No one. I agree, this is nothing, they're not affecting transactions so what's the point? Oooh, we can take a website off line? Yep, high school "hackers" can do that.
Ur mama!
Ever hear of a warning shot? As in take a shot across the bow? As in fire in the air? As in we don't want to declare war we just want you to know we can kick your ass if that's the road you want to pursue! What noone really cares about at all is your extremely narrow viewpoints or really shitty long term advice.
I don't know how much profanity is allowed at this site as I try not to use it.
That being said, can I just say Fuck off Harry Wanger or not?
"All you've got to do is say earmuffs to him. Then you can say fuck, shit, bitch...whatever you want.
Cock, balls..."
you're cleared hot echo fox 3.
Fuck the fuck off fucking fuckwad. (I'm a tad cranky with big corporations today).
Well, payments on Visa accounts are made to the individual issuing bank (eg., Capital One), not to Visa itself.
The www.visa.com site actually just appears to be a simple front-end to various country-specific websites. http://us.visa.com (Visa USA) still works just fine right now, even with the main site unavailable.
Google cache does not show anything on www.visa.com which looks particularly important anyway. And in general, all the Visa websites look like little more than enhanced online advertisements.
Actually I don't agree with Harry on a lot of things, but he is right.....the processing centers and respective cardholder banks manage the flow. The corporate website plays no roll.....
You are free to agree with the shallow, but the act of taking down the V site is not the nub.
The nub is that it becomes more acceptable to take actions that would have been frowned on.
You know how many peeps look to extract a pound of flesh if they feel they have been wronged by a V or BOFA ,etc.
The pressure is rising. leaking you might say.
BBC was reporting problems with mastercard payments. Quite a lot of problems. I would post a link but I can't get on bbc.co.uk at the moment. Strange. I can get on anything else.
BBC site is error 500. Did they do this too?
It's back, link to mastercard story.

OK, who's next!
I'd suggest http://lieberman.senate.gov/, but who the hell would notice?
the HFT's
the HFT's
WAW! RESPECT!
I didn't think they could do that!
This financial institutions aren't using your basic serverpark. And trashing that is just mindblowing!
It shows a glimps of what they can do.
Beautiful. Next!!!
Now if they could only crash the HFT Computers so we could get rid of them for good.
I sit here reading all this Bullshit and realise just how minuscule we really are. Who give a fuck anymore? Carlin says it best. In the big picture, We are nothing but a surface nuisance. A failed mutation "The planet will shake us off like a bad case of fleas" ..George Carlin

OMG!!!!11!
Welcome back? Either way, hells yeah.
Well well. What do we have here? :)
And here too...
Just In time when fireworks are going to start ??
Unjunk the hunk!
Chumba,
Welcome Back
Chumba, glad to see that the reports of your demise were much exagerated.
Most of them are the aforementioned script kiddies; some are not. As a group, they can actually cause a lot of damage as long as they're willing to live with the risk of getting the book thrown at them.
And most aren't, because getting thrown in jail tends to get in the way of their life's goal of chugging Mountain Dew and smoking weed.
Of course, if the government goes after them first, then all bets are off. Probably start to see them trying to attack infrastructure targets at that point.
Don't be a douche. The only thing hackers have lacked, since the beginning, is a cause. One friggin' cause that everyone could rally around. Hasn't really happened until now. I think this is a significant development and will multiply and focus power. To what end? Nobody knows, and that's the nature of things.
Right, once some of their bud's get disappeared, how willing will those hackers be to engage in this? The problem, as others pointed out, is that this will be the impetus for locking down the internet, which would be a far worse end result.
I'm not sure how they would attack infrastructure. Can you really get at the trunk lines for AT&T et al as an outsider. And are you willing to take the punishment that would go along with getting caught?
insiders always do the most damage.
If lucky they will hide it from you, thus the wiki.
it was back up pretty quickly... not too impressive.
In fact, the main MasterCard site was down for more than a few hours today.
And re whether Anonymous are script kiddies or not - I don't think so.
Ding dong, the Witch is dead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6exm2Hi28Xw
Working again now.
down again.. lol..
up..down.. up .. down.. it's the hackers virtual blow job as in "Suck my cock, you bastards!!"
Hackers FTW!!
Right, then you get everyone reading the news checking out the site to see if it is up. I would love to but do not want to be identified with the attack.
TD, ZH has been great at following mutual fund equity outflows, but I believe mutual fund bond outflows may be very interesting to track.

I can state categorically that I have not felt as hopeful in the last 10 years as I do at this moment.
These guys are laying their necks on the line for all of us. Respect is due.
Amen.
Who needs an Internet kill switch when you can just launch a bunch of DDoS attacks, hmmm ?
...and fuck visa.
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
"It's not just you! http://www.visa.com looks down from here."
it does the heart good to see smug arrogant self-rigtheous corporate goons hit in the shins...
i wish they would take out amazon.com...that asswipe cia agent is the queen of censorship...my guess is that amazon also censors books for approval...
Who knew VISA even had a website?
Exactly. Look, if this were Amazon.com, then you'd have a big deal. Visa? Come on, seriously.
Already fixed.
Who said it was SUPPOSED to be a 'big deal'?
Hairy Wanker - Dont you use Visa to process your Dildo transactions?
hmmmm. Thanks for the suggestion.
Actually saw a posting from Henri that he worked as a partner in a small CRE place but then he posted and said he had his own home decor company?
I actually don't care because he is full of BS - troll yes
Diplomacy by other means;))))
The websites mean nothing. Attack the servers which handle electronic fund transfers. Then you'll make them piss their pants. I doubt the script kiddies know about EFT's.
wrong.
yup
In other news...
More bread!! More circuses!!
The Senate, in a lame-duck session, is set to vote cloture on the Orwellianly named DREAM act.
Im suprised they didnt name it Supercool Red White and Blue Act! Or, If You Disagree With This Act, You Must Be A Communist Act!
No if you disagree you are a HomoPhobe and a Racist.
Oh is that right? So the bill is for gays and 'races'...and what does it entail exactly? Removing money from my pocket and giving it to them? Come on, tell the truth!
If You Disagree With This Act You Must Be A Racist Act. There, I fixed it for you.
The real way is a concerted cable cutting by stolen backhoes across the country on a pre ordained day ( or night)
Now THAT would be a freakin mess.
Don't go that far:)
working again. just was able to connect.
Oops down again.
That's the signature of a DDOS. It fixes itself when they stop. They stop when they get bored.
Tomorrow, try HFT's!
There we have it. Now there is a guy on Dylan Ratigan saying that there is no response to these DOS attacks but to restrict the oneness of the Internet. These guys are not doing anyone any favors by creating potential catalysts and excuses for the elites to create a perfect scenario and excuse for shutting down the Internet that the zombies will consume happily.
Something is not right here. What good is taking down the Visa website? It is not disrupting transactions. Proof and point I literally just walked back from the supermarket and used my Visa card without problem 5 seconds ago.
Fine, I say let them take down the internet. Bring it on.
Part of you does not think that this is being orchestrated to pass new legislation to shut down sites in the near future like Zero Hedge? That is what concerns me Sheep-Dog.
Shutting down Amazon, E-Trade and Youtube would be start though if they really wanted to upset people.
Sure Im quite aware of the ramifications, I like the internet and zerohedge and all but I dont need it. Restrict access to porn and then youll have an actual revolution in this country.
Not to worry. The SEC has proven that Government workers cannot "function" without the lures of the internet.
I think the contingent of people who are paying attention is large enough that any more clampdowns will result in making the situation hotter, not cooler. Just look at the hundreds of mirror sites for the WikiLeaks archives.
And the logic works both ways: if indeed it really doesn't matter that the Visa site is down, then what would be the point in the government doing anything about it?
Dylan Ratigan's is now a hacker site?
I'd like them to explain to me at a protocol and hardware level how the fuck they are going to shut down the internet. With reference to the relevant RFCs. Oh they can't do that? Then they can please STFU.
And this is when viewing Assange (and Wikileaks) as an operative starts making a lot of sense. "Operation Payback" is straight out of the Hegelian dialectic playbook... ferment good old fashion young hackers' dissent and get them to wreck havoc on the net - get yourself a basis for restriction of freedoms associated with the internet. Bravo Langley, bravo. Edward Bernays would be proud...
it's the same play out of the playbook that they've been using for the past centuries, most obviously about 10 years ago.
and here we are falling for it again. rinse and repeat
kristallnacht
i was going more along the lines of 9/11
It looks up to me AND appears to be fully functional...
http://usa.visa.com/index.html
That was a quick boner
I really, really want to know the banking secrets, something tells me time will reveal it all.
Couple of items I'm really hoping for, if it turns out to be BAC:
- That the Fed arm-twisted them to buy Countrywide and Merrill, and what leverage they used for the arm-twisting
- An admission, maybe some arrogant jokes, about how the notes were knowingly never transferred to the trusts so they could securitize the same mortgage umpteen times. It's probably 80% likely to be true anyway. BAC go boom.
Doesn't it seem odd that the Fed is all of a sudden selling their interest in C? Wonder if that is were the dead bodies are.
Money = power. Money is the root of all evil. Evil has the power.
"Money is the root of all evil"
WRONG - the quote is: "For the love of money is the root of all evil!"
First Timothy (not Geithner) 6:10
KJV - full passage: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
To those who disparage this act as a tantrum thrown by over-caffeinated suburban youth, with limited effect on Visa's core business or, indeed, business as usual: you're looking at this wrong. This is more like a few thousand bricks thrown through a few thousand corporate lobby windows, a dozen CTOs kicked in the nuts by a hundred masked assailants -- one very large turd laid upon their coveted brand of reliability.
top-notch imagery there chum, and a great point.
Brand Reliability fooked. Curtain-Twitching Daily Mail Readers will literally be recoiling in fear from the use of plastic and online transactions.
Praise be, the merry vandals!
Futures are rocketing to the HOD on this news.
You will be required to submit to custody searches ("pat downs") and show your papers to access the "new and improved SECURE" internet....
Biometrics or smartcard...
They will want you to send a nude Photo of yourself that they can send to the SEC for verification purposes. Of course. The Photo will be destroyed in due time.
They've been trying to get IPv6 standardized across the board. It's really smart work, much improved over IPv4. Nobody uses it because they don't have to and IPv4 is "good enough".
Nobody is going to support this "rewrite the intarwebs" crap. Anything that starts to smell like "Congress is going to run the Internet" will be shot down by Beltway lobbyists so fast it will make your head spin.
And then, do you know how hard it would be to write a protocol patch to create a wireless peer2peer Internet over ad-hoc networks? With real packet routing? If the need where there it would be on the streets in a week.
Get over it. They can't touch this. Short of confiscating computers and cutting off phone lines to homes, they can't touch this.
Here come the big brother official government data messages courtesy of homeland security at Wal-Mart checkout counters and malls. This shit is surreal. We are living in 1984. Big giant flat screens compelling you to report subversive activity:

Thanks. Reading it like that considering what we are discussing made me laugh. Obviously they do not hate us for our 10 year occupation.

Seriously?
With Big'n'Ugly Sis Napolitano on Walmart check out screens telling you to turn in your neighbor for 'suspicious activites' (carrying a gun case into your house) and shutting down Twitter and porn sites, youd have revolution in the streets quick! Im hoping for it.
Makes me think Terrorists are going to attack Walmart and large Shopping Malls. I do not know if I want to go to either during the Holiday Shopping. I think the Defense Dept. got a tip on a Walmart or large Shopping Mall Attack comming.

That is awesome.....BRAVO!
In the spirit of Project Mayhem?
"Operation Payback" Crashes VISA Website In Under One Minute As It Seeks Revenge From Second Credit Card Processor...
The humorous part is there is a non-zero probability that the wikileaks insurance file, when decrypted, contains the Rick Ashley rickroll video with a message reading "LOL, you got rickrolled. Love, CIA and NSA" and in tiny, nearly undetectable print, "(P.S. while you wait on your one-way ticket to Club FEMA we hope that you enjoy the spyware)".
Modern problems require modern solutions; were I a TBTF PTB, that's how I'd game it.
It's the "hope" you elected, duh. They're miles ahead of you and me. And Ron Paul is no JFK.

Completely off Zaku, completely off
I think Wikileaks sucks, they've demonstrated a firmly anti-American purpose (socialist/leftist variety) while laying false claim to free speech, and this cable 'leak' shenanigans are meant to punish us for trying to stall for time instead of sending up the balloon already.
That being said, USG, through our financial transaction companies (Paypal, Visa, Mastercard), now say I can't donate $20 to those pinkos if I wanted to, but I can still procure the services of as many legislators and commissions as I (or rather, my companies) can afford.
"Monkeyhammer", as in several (tens of) thousands of monkeys hammering on a given website, is a correct response, although I'm surprised Wikileaks haven't simply released the "banking" file in response.
