Osama Bin Laden Killed: Implications First Take

Tyler Durden's picture

From Stratfor

Osama bin Laden Killed

The United States has killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and recovered his body, according to numerous media reports May 1 citing U.S. officials. U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to make an announcement on the subject. It is not clear precisely how bin Laden was killed or how his body was recovered, but the assertion that he is dead is significant.

Bin Laden had become the symbol of al Qaeda, even though the degree to which he commanded the organization was questionable. The symbolic value of his death is obvious. The United States can claim a great victory. Al Qaeda can proclaim his martyrdom.

It is difficult to understand what this means at this moment, but it permits the Obama administration to claim victory, at least partially, over al Qaeda. It also opens the door for the beginning of a withdrawal from Afghanistan, regardless of the practical impact of bin Laden’s death. The mission in Afghanistan was to defeat al Qaeda, and with his death, a plausible claim can be made that the mission is complete. Again speculatively, it will be interesting to see how this affects U.S. strategy there.

Equally possible is that this will trigger action by al Qaeda in bin Laden’s name. We do not know how viable al Qaeda is or how deeply compromised it was. It is clear that bin Laden’s cover had been sufficiently penetrated to kill him. If bin Laden’s cover was penetrated, then the question becomes how much of the rest of the organization’s cover was penetrated. It is unlikely, however, that al Qaeda is so compromised that it cannot take further action.

At this early hour, the only thing possible is speculation on the consequences of bin Laden’s death, and that speculation is inherently flawed. Still, the importance of his death has its consequences. Certainly one consequence will be a sense of triumph in the United States. To others, this will be another false claim by the United States. For others it will be a call to war. We know little beyond what we have been told, but we know it matters.

OBL is dead. It is so convenient. Otherwise, he could talk.

Saddam also was captured and killed but it did not do any good for Americans fighting in Iraq. Remember that America is still fighting in Iraq. America is still a long way from conquering Iraq and controlling their oil.

Prediction: Short to medium term - Increased violence. Long term: Decreased violence. Short term there may be some pre-planned attacks and undisciplined retaliatory attacks. Medium term increased as various bin Laden lieutenants try to jockey for a leadership position in the vacuum. Long term less as loss of the figurehead hurts their position. Regardless a good thing. Well done on military and intel and good on Obama for not backing down even though it required an attack in Pakistan.  Didn't think he had it in him.  Haven't read his transcript yet.  I hope he had the good sense to give the military credit due them, or did he take all the glory himself?
Now if they pull out, it's fine by me.  Nation-building is a loser's game.

This celebration of wrong foreign policy deserves more of a look than just "we got the bad guy."  Why is it that we justify so many american deaths, civilian deaths in iraq&afghanistan, trillions of dollars of shadow money, and so on in a war against a theology?

I take it all back.  Well I take back the kind work I gave to Obama.  Seems that the dog ate his homework they "buried him at sea".  What an idiot.  He certainly managed to spur some conspiracy theories with that brilliant effort.

Unless he is playing rope-a-dope like he did with the birth certificate.  Act suspicious to encourage a conspiracy theory, then let anyone who doesn't buy his line be discredited by everyone while he stands above the fray.

I disagree with Obama's take that justice had been served.  Osama's goal of his attack was to lure the US into an endless war that eventually bankrupts the US, he is still winning.  Justice would have been capturing that rat bastard, bringing him back to DC, and allowing every American the opportunity to spit on him.  Shit charge for the opportunity and lower the deficit while you're at it.

Osama was one of them. Others are Greenspan, Bernanke, Geithner, Bush, Obama, all the banksters and the evil insurance companies that capitalize on human fear. My advice: drop all insurances except auto as they are mandatory. It is cheaper.

True example: Three X-rays were charged at close to $1,100. Our 20% deductible was $220. The price of these X-rays on a self-pay program are $120. Don't believe? Try it. We now shop doctors on the phone. Oh! they hate it. but we tell them no insurance and so on. So far GP's are down to $69 in our area. Just get major medical if you can get it?

Mon, 05/02/2011 - 02:36 | 1228408 Harlequin001

Osama's goal was the ultimate downfall of America, which he has in part achieved with stunning efficiency...

Never before in the history of mankind has so much been given up by so many for so little...

Tell me, do you now feel more 'secure'? Perhaps we can now have a repeal of the Patriot Act and all the Anti Terrorist legislation which curtails so much of our basic liberties in the West...

But then again, perhaps not...

Perhaps Osama was never the real enemy of the State?

I agree. However, it's also proof positive that they felt the need to.

You only need to control something when it's getting out of control.

It's a sign the situation is deteriorating, or accelerating, take your pick. And given the capital they're putting up, both political (they can only kill him once) and financial, I'd say it's close to a panic.

How many more notches does that control knob they have go to? I'd imagine we've got to be around an 8, not much left to turn...

captured, fairly tried, and executed

- all done without invading Iraq causing widespread death and destruction, and without causing widespread death and destruction in Afghanistan.

Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

The Afghan Taliban government repeatedly stated they would hand over Bin Laden if evidence were presented indicating his involvement. There is much reason to believe the Taliban were unhappy with Bin Laden's presence in their country and did not want a US invasion. Bush never tested the Taliban claim. He wanted war and military invasion as a precursor to his intended deliberate attack on Iraq. He never wanted to test the option of negotiation or limited police action as many experts recommended.

Bush and Blair are both ostensible war criminals for launching aggressive war and the deceptions to justify it.

The ongoing military wars of occupation have a counter-productive relationship to reducing "terrorism",  or protecting the innocent, and continue only to serve the interests of global corporations and a complicit global Pentagon.

The Bogeyman is dead!!

We need a new bogeyman to justify TSA agents molesting our women and children at airports.

I have to agree with some other posters that the shitty response to this genuinely good news by ZHers reflects badly on the permabearish mindset prevalent here.    This is a fine moment.   A moment for  pride.   All of you, even you that are long AU and bleeding right now, no doubt sat somewhere in the days following 9/11, watching the news, and said to yourself or a friend, I can't wait til we kill that motherfucker.  You probably waited for days, expectantly, waiting for the news that you wanted so badly to hear, until other events and our national missteps drained away your enthusiasm and passion.

The negative reflection here should be that it took us a decade and countless dollars and many additional deaths to avenge the acts of this one cocksucker.   But while those circumstances should cause us to reflect, they do not take away the joy we should feel that we finally did.   Try to find that memory of fury and rage you felt in the days after 9/11.   Try to remember how you would have felt then if this news has been announced.   You would have been high-fiving everyone around, cause we fucked him up and he fucking deserved it and vengeance feels good sometimes.

Find that memory and feel the rush.  Enjoy this.  We finally paid back blood with blood.

And frankly, if you can't see that, because you are long AU or short the ES, it might be a good time to reflect on your fixation on your investments and your ability to differentiate happy news and tragedy based on its effect on your portfolio.  All those kids cheering outside the WH don't give a shit about their investments.   They just know that tonight we are winners, if only for one night, and it's time to wave a flag and feel good about being an American.

Satiating bloodlust is not cause for national euphoria. If you can't understand why some people are not overwhelmed with joy at the news of another death funded with their tax dollars, then perhaps you need to reflect on your own priorities.

I would have gladly allowed my tax dollars to go toward a trial, but punative killing seems to be the order of the day.  Rejoice!

Fuck that.  A trillion dollars and a bunch more of our guys dead to kill one man who they couldn't even prove did what they claim?  The patriot act, fondling kids in airports, warrantless searches, wholescale surveillance, our government acting like Saddam's in reaction?

You're proud of that?

I've never been scared of that towelhead cowering in some cave over there.  It's my own government and chest-beating assholes that want to send other peoples' kids out to man checkpoints that are the real threat here.

Defense contractors are excited, banks are excited and oil companies are excited.

This will only intesify the wars.

1400+ troops dead in Afghanistan alone to kill one guy who wasn't even directly involved with the attacks on 9/11.

The gross display of nationalism makes me sick to my stomach. This isn't the Super Bowl. Our team didn't beat their team. This doesn't fix ANY of our problems.

I'm happy to have Zero Hedge. I think some of the theories on here regarding Osama are batshit insane, but I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one who is disquieted instead of feeling a rush of pride.

First of all, we are ALL entitled to our opinion. Not allowing for others to have their opinion is Un-American. Do you agree? So, rejoice if that is your opinion. I am not rejoicing because my mind is elsewhere. The USA has a bigger problem than Bin Laden which is currency collapse/hyperinflation. I am not belittling anything about 9/11, but I am not rejoicing about much of anything these days given a looming currency collapse.
