Osama Bin Laden Killed: Implications First Take

Osama bin Laden Killed

The United States has killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and recovered his body, according to numerous media reports May 1 citing U.S. officials. U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to make an announcement on the subject. It is not clear precisely how bin Laden was killed or how his body was recovered, but the assertion that he is dead is significant.

Bin Laden had become the symbol of al Qaeda, even though the degree to which he commanded the organization was questionable. The symbolic value of his death is obvious. The United States can claim a great victory. Al Qaeda can proclaim his martyrdom.

It is difficult to understand what this means at this moment, but it permits the Obama administration to claim victory, at least partially, over al Qaeda. It also opens the door for the beginning of a withdrawal from Afghanistan, regardless of the practical impact of bin Laden’s death. The mission in Afghanistan was to defeat al Qaeda, and with his death, a plausible claim can be made that the mission is complete. Again speculatively, it will be interesting to see how this affects U.S. strategy there.

Equally possible is that this will trigger action by al Qaeda in bin Laden’s name. We do not know how viable al Qaeda is or how deeply compromised it was. It is clear that bin Laden’s cover had been sufficiently penetrated to kill him. If bin Laden’s cover was penetrated, then the question becomes how much of the rest of the organization’s cover was penetrated. It is unlikely, however, that al Qaeda is so compromised that it cannot take further action.

At this early hour, the only thing possible is speculation on the consequences of bin Laden’s death, and that speculation is inherently flawed. Still, the importance of his death has its consequences. Certainly one consequence will be a sense of triumph in the United States. To others, this will be another false claim by the United States. For others it will be a call to war. We know little beyond what we have been told, but we know it matters.

OBL is dead. It is so convenient. Otherwise, he could talk.

Saddam also was captured and killed but it did not do any good for Americans fighting in Iraq. Remember that America is still fighting in Iraq. America is still a long way from conquering Iraq and controlling their oil.

BTW:

"Obama sad linen" (Read: Dirty Laundry) is the best anagram of "Osama Bin Laden" I can come up with.

Prediction: Short to medium term - Increased violence. Long term: Decreased violence. Short term there may be some pre-planned attacks and undisciplined retaliatory attacks. Medium term increased as various bin Laden lieutenants try to jockey for a leadership position in the vacuum. Long term less as loss of the figurehead hurts their position. Regardless a good thing. Well done on military and intel and good on Obama for not backing down even though it required an attack in Pakistan.  Didn't think he had it in him.  Haven't read his transcript yet.  I hope he had the good sense to give the military credit due them, or did he take all the glory himself?
Now if they pull out, it's fine by me.  Nation-building is a loser's game.

This celebration of wrong foreign policy deserves more of a look than just "we got the bad guy."  Why is it that we justify so many american deaths, civilian deaths in iraq&afghanistan, trillions of dollars of shadow money, and so on in a war against a theology?

I take it all back.  Well I take back the kind work I gave to Obama.  Seems that the dog ate his homework they "buried him at sea".  What an idiot.  He certainly managed to spur some conspiracy theories with that brilliant effort.

Unless he is playing rope-a-dope like he did with the birth certificate.  Act suspicious to encourage a conspiracy theory, then let anyone who doesn't buy his line be discredited by everyone while he stands above the fray.

Watch his speech...he says "today, under my direction" when the death is suppose to have occurred a week ago. Which is it?

  -----------------------------------FALSE FLAG------------------------------------

We can expect stories like this to come at us from all angles, hot and heavy, concerning Osama and the terrorists. Theres a terrorist hiding behind every tree - don't you know!

When the administration is in big doo doo and Wall Street is about to declare a COMEX default - quick bring operation distraction on line and frighten the bejebus out of the masses, so they will follow and swallow this. Silver? BTFD! Don't be BS'd.

I agree. I made such call of a swan song for Bennie and co. Saturday the 23rd.

Click here #1199534 One last attempt to slow the acsent of gold and silver. They will most likely follow tomorrow at 7:20 am with massive short selling.

After stabilizing for a day or two, I will jump back in big with physical buys.

I have no idea which way the stock market will go, as perception of the consequences vary. The spin of course will be on the positive side from the pundits.

OutLookingIn's picture

Unfortunately, 70 to 80 percent of the populace will believe this bullshit and swallow it hook, line and sinker! Keep close watch as the rhetoric will most probably be ratcheted up to light speed blaming _________(insert name) for the countries woes and therefore we have no choice but to go to war!

This whole Osama dead Stuff really gets to me. The guy from FFT summed it up perfectly. http://www.forecastfortomorrow.com/news/2011/05/osama-bin-laden-dead/ Never before has this country embraced Empire so willingly. Never before have we given up, wholesale, our precious liberties won with the blood of our countrymen. For what?? Some lame ass guy in a cave somewhere that represents some of the best thinking of the 13th Century? This is beyond ridiculous, it is totally absurd.

Harlequin001's picture

Empire?

America has never had an empire, it only ever bought its friends.

And that cost is now rising, daily...

Bigelkhorn, that is probably the the most profound paragraph I have read on ZH in a long time.

Well written Sir.

I just thank God the USA is completely and totally bankrupt which makes boogieman Osama irrelevant.

The USA is totally incapable paying for any more wars or policing the world.

You have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice in the same year than you do from being killed by a terrorist from the other side of the planet.

Hindsight2020's picture

I disagree with Obama's take that justice had been served.  Osama's goal of his attack was to lure the US into an endless war that eventually bankrupts the US, he is still winning.  Justice would have been capturing that rat bastard, bringing him back to DC, and allowing every American the opportunity to spit on him.  Shit charge for the opportunity and lower the deficit while you're at it.

Michael's picture

My money was on Osama bankrupting America, not US forces. Looks like I won that bet.

Doña K's picture

Osama was one of them. Others are Greenspan, Bernanke, Geithner, Bush, Obama, all the banksters and the evil insurance companies that capitalize on human fear. My advice: drop all insurances except auto as they are mandatory. It is cheaper.

True example: Three X-rays were charged at close to $1,100. Our 20% deductible was $220. The price of these X-rays on a self-pay program are $120. Don't believe? Try it. We now shop doctors on the phone. Oh! they hate it. but we tell them no insurance and so on. So far GP's are down to $69 in our area. Just get major medical if you can get it?

Harlequin001's picture

Osama's goal was the ultimate downfall of America, which he has in part achieved with stunning efficiency...

Never before in the history of mankind has so much been given up by so many for so little...

Tell me, do you now feel more 'secure'? Perhaps we can now have a repeal of the Patriot Act and all the Anti Terrorist legislation which curtails so much of our basic liberties in the West...

But then again, perhaps not...

Perhaps Osama was never the real enemy of the State?

TIMMAYYY's picture

you right...i think we should all get to spit on that rat bastard obama and the terror he has brought...bring bush out...must be time for another pineapple up his arse.

Not hard at all.  "Libya."  And "thanks Pakistan!" of course as well.

Oh regional Indian's picture

What it means is simply this: With enough of a Cand C structure in AFPAK, the troops will nwo be rotated into the Middle Eastern theater, where the upcoming action is.

yup, The Meddle East. Forget about troops comign home etc.

Syria, Libya, Egypt....morocco? yes, much troops needed.

Good luck everyone. This is a phase shifter. A chapter closed so a new, uglier one can unfold. For those saying Yay, boy, you have an eye-opening due.

Think of them as "Synchronized Swimmers"....
