Oxford Research Group Concludes Israeli Attack On Iran Would Start Long War

Tyler Durden's picture

One wonders how many Ph.D. were consulted in the preparation of this report. Yet aside from the glaringly obvious, there are some other interesting observations. "An Israeli attack on Iran would be the start of a protracted conflict that would be unlikely to prevent the eventual acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran and might even encourage it. Long-range strike aircraft acquired from the United States, combined with an improved fleet of tanker aircraft, the deployment of long-range drones and the probable availability of support facilities in northeast Iraq and Azerbaijan, all increase Israel's potential for action against Iran." According to the report, it might take three to seven years for Iran to develop a small arsenal of nuclear weapons if it decided to do so. Also, the report wisely states that an Israeli strike would be focused not only on destroying nuclear and missile targets but would also hit factories and research centers and even university laboratories to damage Iranian expertise. Shockingly, this would cause many civilian casualties. Oxford believes Iran's retaliation would include withdrawing from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the production of nuclear weapons to deter further attacks. Other recourse would include missile attacks on Israel, closing the Strait of Hormuz to push up oil prices and paramilitary or missile attacks on Western oil facilities in the Gulf. Fun bedside reading.

We realize that asking readers to behave in the comments section is beyond futile.

I did that for you.  As a gesture.

Now, how fast can you run?

There are ten other bombs, in ten other buildings in the immediate area...

This is the beginning.  We're at ground zero.  Maybe you should say a few words, to mark the occasion.

Jack and Marla look out the windows: a building EXPLODES; collapsing upon itself.  Then, ANOTHER BUILDING IMPLODES into a massive cloud of dust.  Jack and Marla are silhouetted against the skyline.

Jack looks to Marla, reaches to take her hand.

Jack Says: I'm sorry... you met me at a very strange time in my life.

This is another intellectual masturbation.

Prior to the 9/11, the USA was the only unquestionable superpower. Today, it is all a history.

Executing the 9/11, the USA and Israeli leaderships were looking for an overwhelming change of their already existing world domination.

However, just short 7 years later

- The USA superpower status is very much questionable. The USA economic and military capabilities are very much limited. The Georgia event has shown that Russia was ready and willing to challenge  militarily the US expansion in their backyard.

- Both China and Russia have made gigantic strives and advances in their geopolitical/military/economic capabilities.

- Russia is just one step away from becoming a Fascist state with a nationalistic agenda

- Pakistan is a wild card with nuclear capabilities

- The US European allies are in a state of disarray and general decline.

- Japan will not support future major American adventurism.

- Both Iraq and Afghanistan clearly have show US geopolitical limitation.

Therefore, an "Iranian adventure" will have catastrophic consequences  for the USA and dramatically change the present highly unstable geopolitical balance of power.  The WWII has united the USA. However, the presently American society is in a state of disintegration and decay and will be incapable of sustaining stresses of any major international confrontation.

Finally remember that wars are very unpredictable.  Prior to the WWII, nobody even dreamed that Soviets would emerge as a superpower aggressively challenging the USA and destroying the British empire. Only disastrous policies of the Soviet leader N. Khrushchev (demilitarization of the Soviet society, an array of catastrophic economic failures, the major confrontation with China, etc.,) allowed the USA to recover and reassess its world leadership.

Now I'm a fan of doom and gloom, much like everyone else here.  But to claim that the US status as a superpower is "questionable" is just plain stupid.

The USA could still erase any nation on Earth if she wanted to.  The question isn't "is the US capable of winning".  The question is "Is it worth winning".

The "sole superpower" rhetoric was always misunderstood.  Detente never went away. The pyrrhic realities of most military pro/counter insurgencies meant the USA, while still unthreatened, was never unchallenged.   Being a "superpower" consists of the former, not the latter.

So are Russia and China.

<the US status as a superpower is "questionable"> means that the present situation is rapidly changing not to the US advantage. By losing its industrial base, US military capabilities will start its rapid deterioration in the coming years.

I bet someone in ancient Rome once said something much the same...History has shown that Hitler's decision to fight on just two formidable fronts was a decisive moment.

Current wars/commitments held by the US are already unsustainable; another war in the ME would simply light the candle at the other end. What I'm yet to read, is the simple and obvious reality, that both Terrorism and the war in Afghanistan are essentially Guerrilla Wars. An Iranian attack would merely create a ME Guerrilla coalition, with Iran openly supporting/supplying further terrorist activity.

The only winners of Guerrilla Warfare is the Military Industrial Complex...and of course the Guerrillas themselves (Vietnam was a Guerrilla war...how'd that one pan-out?!).

Now's not the time for anyone to be fooling themselves, Terrorism and the war in Afghanistan will never be won.

Also, there are other ME nations would more than likely get involved.

Well, one part of this report is obviously BS (dhimmi propaganda, really):

"An Israeli attack on Iran would ... might even encourage it [Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons]."

Since they are working on acquiring nuclear weapons now, no action in the future could be said to encourage it.  Iran exhibits classic Bill Clinton "triangulation", with various people saying:

 - we are not pursuing weapons

 - why shouldn't we have the right to the weapons our enemies have?

 - we will wipe Israel off the map

 - the islamic republic of Iran is peaceful

 - we will show the great satan a holocaust such as he has never seen before

 - etc.

We all better hope that someone has the backbone to stop Iran's relentless pursuit of nuclear bombs.

True.

If Iran had even a single nuke, Tel Aviv would be a memory.

Probably not so much true. The Iranian leadership is no less rational than that of other nuclear armed states. One nuke dropped by Iran on Israel would send dozens of Israeli and probably American nukes off toward Iran, utterly destroying it. Imadinnerjacket doesn't want to be radioactive dust anymore than anyone else does.

Besides all US intelligence agencies concurred in 2007 and 2009 that Iran has no nuclear  weapons program. Iran is a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and is currently in full compliance with IAEA inspections.

The report seems to presuppose that the Iranian government in some way, shape or form represents the people and interests of Iran.  The fact of the matter is that the Iranian government is a corrupt oligarchy kept in power by hired thugs, and at least a significant number of said thugs are actually non-Iranian mercenaries (and thus have little compunction about shooting down Iranian demonstrators).

What would happen if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear program is one of those unknowable things - if the government of Iran is really made up of messianic screwballs, then they might try to lash back at Israel.  If they are made up of crooks determined to maintain themselves in power, then they won't roll the dice on a war with Israel (crooks tend to only fight wars they are convinced they can win at minimal cost).

It is no one's interest - least of all the interest of the Iranian people - that Iran should obtain nuclear weapons.  Iran faces no threat which requires a nuclear deterrant.  Israel, on the other hand, would be killed for good if Irann obtained merely three nuclear weapons and used them against Israel.  Whatever else one wishes to say about Israel, no nation faced with such a threat takes it calmly.  If we here in the United States don't stop the Iranian nuclear program, then Israel will simply have to.

Perhaps this is how it all happens. Remember, never wound the king. All the mideast nations that hate and/or are scared of Iran, and Israel put 100 nuke tipped cruise missiles on some old oil tanker off the Straits and in the middle of the night, send em, thereby turning Iran into a 10 million degree wasteland. No one might even find out who did it, and no one would mind the end of Iran, for good.

I like it. Short, sweet, oil prices go up for a while, only Iran people die, everyone else is fine. Where's the hole...

Under the Symington Amendment, the USA is forbidden from giving any aid to any country which has nuclear weapons but refuses to sign the NPT.

The Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 was amended by the Symington Amendment (Section 669 of the FAA) in 1976. It banned U.S. economic, and military assistance, and export credits to countries that deliver or receive, acquire or transfer nuclear enrichment technology when they do not comply with IAEA regulations and inspections. This provision, as amended, is now contained in Section 101 of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA).

AECA Section 101

(a) PROHIBITIONS; SAFEGUARDS AND MANAGEMENT. —Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, no funds made available to carry out the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 or this Act may be used for the purpose of providing economic assistance (including assistance under chapter 4 of part II of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961), providing military assistance or grant military education and training, providing assistance under chapter 6 of part II of that Act, or extending military credits or making guarantees, to any country which the President determines delivers nuclear enrichment equipment, materials, or technology to any other country on or after August 4, 1977, or receives such equipment, materials, or technology from any other country on or after August 4, 1977, unless before such delivery—

   (1) the supplying country and receiving country have reached agreement to place all such equipment, materials, or technology, upon delivery, under multilateral auspices and management when available; and

   (2) the recipient country has entered into an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to place all such equipment, materials, technology, and all nuclear fuel and facilities in such country under the safeguards system of such Agency.

(b) CERTIFICATION BY PRESIDENT OF NECESSITY OF CONTINUED ASSISTANCE; DISAPPROVAL BY CONGRESS.—

(1) Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this section, the President may furnish assistance which would otherwise be prohibited under such subsection if he determines and certifies in writing to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate that—

   (A) the termination of such assistance would have a serious adverse effect on vital United States interests; and

   (B) he has received reliable assurances that the country in question will not acquire or develop nuclear weapons or assist other nations in doing so. Such certification shall set forth the reasons supporting such determination in each particular case.

(2)(A) A certification under paragraph (1) of this subsection shall take effect on the date on which the certification is received by the Congress. However, if, within thirty calendar days after receiving this certification, the Congress enacts a joint resolution stating in substance that the Congress disapproves the furnishing of assistance pursuant to the certification, then upon the enactment of that resolution the certification shall cease to be effective and all deliveries of assistance furnished under the authority of that certification shall be suspended immediately.

(B) Any joint resolution under this paragraph shall be considered in the Senate in accordance with the provisions of section 601(b) of the International Security Assistance and Arms Export Control Act of 1976.

Many thanks, yet as i see it the problem is many are confusing the Jewish faith with Zionists. Please allow me to explain.

There are many in Israel right now who are not happy with what is going on. This includes common residents all the way up to various members of the government and, of course, on the religious side many Rabbis.

Think of it, very loosely translated per se and in a sense, to the many Americans who wanted out of the Vietnam war. The then current leadership wanted war and were heck-bent at virtually forcing their citizens of a certain age group/qualifications to sign up for military duty and kill others no matter what these forcibly enrolled military soldiers true belief(s) were. Please remember that in Israel you are obligated to join the military at a certain age/qualification and, thus, subjected to following orders or face the consequences. Of course murder is murder no matter how one tried to justify and rationalize it.

Hopefully this makes sense as many people in Israel are not happy with Netanyahu and his regime he has been inflicting against the citizens within the State of Israel.

Of course ZH'ers can feel free to see Wiki, though there is far more to the story of course than what is 'allowed' on Wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zionism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism

PS: Am Jewish and in fact come from very well educated Kohen lineage/bloodline (the uppermost 'tribe' within the religion).

REMEMBER: The truth never changes over time/history, though many may try to rewrite it to benefit their own means and desire(s).

PS: And if some AIPAC member decides to call me 'a self-hating Jew', they are barking up the wrong olive branch.

thanks again MarketTruth, there is integrity in your posts here.

I agree that not everyone differentiates between those of Jewish heritage or faith, and those who are aligned with Zionists. . . I have long time friends who are of the first category, and they in no way are supportive of the goals of the latter. . .

just like there are nutter fundamentalists in the Christian community here in amrka, and Islamic faithful worldwide who have no desire for violence. . . shallow thinking in stereotypes makes the world simple, and easy to destroy - when in fact reality is infinitely complex and interconnected. . .and will outlive our witnessing the current "page". . .

peace.

That’s it! MarketTruth.  That's the reason Israel refuses to admit officially that she has nuclear weapons.  Because the Congress would be forced to change the Symington Amendment and risk a national debate on the issue.

It’s has been established for years that Israel has been building a formidable nuclear arsenal. Jane's Intelligence Review, the foremost authority on military hardware, continually revises its estimates upward concerning the number of nuclear warheads Israel possesses. (In 1997, the London-based Jane's also estimated "that the Israeli arsenal may contain as many as 400 nuclear weapons with a total combined yield of 50 megatons." The Jericho is believed to have a 3,000-mile range and carry a payload of just under 1 ton, easily enough to accommodate even a hydrogen bomb, et cetera.)

Iran, a signatory of the NPT has an official record of zero nuclear weapons, and no established evidence of weapons preparation.

1977

So does it apply or not?

As best i can tell, it does apply and this is why BHO refuses to come outright and say he knows Israel has nuclear weapons. Helen Thomas' very first question to BHO during his first press conference as President asked this exact question. "Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?" -- Helen Thomas

www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVGWdLsAoBA

Note BHO's answer in the above video and how he refuses to provide an answer that names names. BHO does not need to speculate, the USA knows for fact Israel has nuclear weapons. This is why Israel is so heck bent to not joining the NPT and anytime this subject is brough up Israel then usually leaves and/or refuses to attend a conference/meeting.

The part I liked the best was when the writer decided what targets Israel would hit. Maybe he got lost on the 200 warheads thing. It would take only a few nuclear warheads to put Iran to sleep for a long time.  And them dumb old Jews, they would let the entire Iranian military live and not pound their equipment into dust. You know that religious guru they have, he will still get to sleep in any of his 4 houses. Yes sir, them dumb old Jews would only go after the worthless stuff.

The biggest fear in this story appears not to be what could happen if the attack does occur. The biggest fear appears to be that the Jews could be successful in carrying out the attack.

From comments to the article Ultimate Cost of Bailout Could Be Capitalism http://www.smartmoney.com/comments/?EntryID=23950&EntryType=SMStory#logi... 28 Sept-2008 Posted by: AlexBanker

Why did no one mention the GOD, the LORD, the CREATOR of this world ? Who else can do it ?
Who else can broke two of the largest US investment banks IN ONE DAY, and the same day to broke the largest world insurer - the day of 15-th of September 2008 ?
Why did no one ask each other 'What is our sin before the face of the CREATOR ?'
As no one ask, I will explain this mess, and I will tell You why:

States of America, you deserve it. You deserve the pain that You will feel today and You will feel next years.
States of America, here the shortest list of Your crimes before the face of GOD:

1. Your oil idolatry; oil's and oil products' pollution of the Earth. Oil is everywhere: in markets, in news, in politics, in economics, in internal and foreign policy of every government in the world. States of America, you made oil a matter of wealth, a tool of greed and a tool of corruption, a tool of bribing and a tool of sin.

2. Your computer idolatry; youn...(Read more of this comment)g men from all over the world are waiting of new processor, waiting for 'powerful' video chips to bring them into the distorted world of illusions
of computer 'games'. It is no more 'games' when young men kill others as a result of 'gaming'. And now You open in Israel the largest fabric of golden idolatry processors in the world, Fab28.

3. Your car idolatry. You reverse the odinary tool of transportation into the army of iron monsters, who steal million human lives each year arount the earth. These monsters are inhabitants of the oil. The other inhabitants of Your sinful oil are: tanks, aircrafts and rockets.

4. Your distortion of the meaning of LAW. Your 8000 pages of what you call 'tax law' is more sinful, is more idiotic than pharisees' interpretation of GOD's law 2000 years ago in Jerusalem. Your 'tax code' is more sinful than ancient pagan Rome empire's taxation with 200 taxes.

5. Your distortion of human rights last decades. States of America, you WERE the union of defendants of human rights. No more. You TWICE elected for leadership the person who is the liar, thief and who ruined human rights in your country and other countries.

At this moment, when God decided to make You start bear punishment for these and other crimes, is the same moment when GOD decided to make modern Israel bear punishment for it's crimes before HIM. The court, which make a decision to exile 'israelitos'
from HOLY LAND, already completed. Modern state of Israel started from 'Balfour declaration' and this modern Israel recently ended with the court's verdict on 'case of Isabella Belfer'.
The highest court of Israel BAGAZ approved a decision when absolutely innocent 70-years old woman, doctor, grandmother was found 'guilty' of transferring her daughter and grand daughter from Israel to Russia.
The israelitos have been WARNED in april 2008 about all their crimes and about the case of Isabella Belfer.
The 'guilty' decision of high court of Israel was declared in the morning of 15-th of September 2008. It was not the verdict to Isabella Belfer, it was a verdict to modern Israel, it was a verdict to its justice system. And ACCORDINGLY the same day, for the same reason You, Sates of America become GUILTY for your long support of the
anti-human racist modern state of Israel.
Now States of America you will see the exile of israelitos from the HOLY LAND, You will see the falling of their relatives in the States of America - your bankers, and at the same time You will bear punishment for Your own sins before the face of GOD.
States of America, You deserve it. It is LORD's JUSTICE on all your crimes.

In the first months of the Iraq occupation in 2003 the 2000 strong Chalabi militia (e.g., death squads) recruited, financed and trained by SIAC (CIAs backward - geddit?) in 2002 were used to slaughter thousands of professors, intellectuals and lawyers in Iraq, decimating the ranks of middle class intelligensia that might have cogently and peacefully have objected to Chalabi's rule as a US sock puppet.  Those who weren't killed, fled as refugees.

This killing off of the local intelligensia - blamed in the media on sectarian violence - was critical to achieving the political paralysis that has enabled the occupation to persist for so long with so little effective, organised opposition.  No doubt it is the template for Iran.

Killing the intelligensia chills academic and political discourse for at least a generation, and sows the confusion that allows tyranny to govern most effectively.  Whether that tyranny will be one controlled by the Iranian religious elite or US/Israeli sock puppets will determine whether such a long war achieves strategic objectives.

My view has always been that neither China nor Russia will countenance a long occupation of Iran by the USA.  They will use Gates' own innovative strategy of recruiting and financing the Mujaheddin and Taliban to undermine US dominance and control in the region until the USA bankrupts itself in the next decade as the USSR did in the 1980s.

I feel bad for the people of Iran. They have no more effective way of changing their government than I do of changing mine. We basically have to live with the results of their actions. I may live or die based on how other feel about my government even though it is beyond my control - and so will they. I've known a few Iranians living here in the US. The best way they demonstrated they were reasonable people was they had gotten out of Iran. One lady never told people she was Iranian - she always refered to herself as Persian.

The Isrealis have enough nukes to remove all significant populations centers in Iran. I have no idea if they have the will to do it. However if they do so it will remove over half the population and all the modern infrastucture. The secret underground nuke factories will produce nothing if there is no supporting society above ground. Removing all but farmers and goat herders would settle the matter.

Stop the Mosque atGround Zero

Part II

June 16, 2010, New York , N.Y. ,   –  by El Marco

Americans Stand Up Against Radical Islam in New York – We Will Not Submit!

Not one major network sent a satellite truck or camera crew to this event. Without bloggers this newsworthy event would have remained unknown to the public and history

On Sunday, June 6th, a multi-ethnic, multi-racial coalition of Americans opposed to Islamic violence and intolerance rallied at the site of the World Trade Center in New York City .

9/11 families were joined by immigrants from IndiaRussia, Egypt,Israel, Africa, Iran and Europe to show opposition to the construction of a mega-mosque at Ground Zero. Others flew in from overseas to speak or just to share their particular ethnic communities’ experiences at the hands of Muslims.

These are parents and spouses of firefighters killed on 9/11. The rally took place just a minute’s walk from Ladder 10 Firehouse, where their loved ones were stationed for duty that terrible day. Ladder 10 lost seven firefighters.

Crowd estimates ranged from 5,000 (NYPD) to 10,000. The crowd overflowed the police barrier enclosures that ran the full length of two city blocks. This photo shows the enclosure in front of the stage at the intersection of Liberty and Church Streets. The second enclosure ran the length of the next block and can be seen on the other side of the traffic lights.

Thousands of additional participants filled the treed area of Zuccotti Park .

Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller are the founders of STOP ISLAMIZATION OF AMERICA, which sponsored the rally. Ms. Geller is a citizen journalist and blogger who runs the human rights web site Atlas Shrugs. Mr. Spencer is the author of several books on Islam and head of the influential web site Jihad watch. Pamela Geller:

Ground Zero is a war memorial, Ground Zero is a burial ground. We are asking for sensitivity…It is unconscionable to build a shrine to the very ideology that inspired the jihadist attacks at Ground Zero, right there. We are asking the imam Rauf and Daisy Khan to be sensitive. For mutual respect and mutual understanding that is demanded of us every day.

There’s a hair-trigger sensitivity in the Muslim world, you can’t run the cartoons, you can’t say Mohammed, this is offensive. This is an offensive mosque. To build a shrine, an Islamic flag of conquest on the sacred ground the cherished site, of a conquered land. This is historic, this is Islamic history. It’s what they do. The St. Sofia in Turkey , the al-Quds, at the holiest Jewish site in Israel . Not here. This is where we take a stand. We must take a stand. We must say no.”

I do not believe that the landmarks commission controlled by Mayor Bloomberg, is going to stop this mosque. It’s not going to happen. Here’s Omar Muhamedi, on his human rights council, a CAIR lawyer, who sued the airlines and the Jane and John Does that saw something and said something on those airplanes, if you remember. That’s who’s on his human rights commission. It ain’t gonna happen with Bloomberg. We have to make it happen. You have to get involved.” (Pamela Geller)

Police enclosure on left, with crowd flowing out of park on right. The new Tower 7 and World Trade Center site are in the background. The green tent, center, is located immediately behind the stage.

Port Authority and NYPD officers kept watch over the rally and were well aware of the need for heightened security at this event. One of their own Port Authority officers, WTC Sergeant Alan T. De Vona was on duty at the World Trade Center on 9/11, 2001, and was one of the first to help victims of the terrorist attack. He spoke these words to the SIOA rally:

“It’s almost nine years. I’m hoping that America is watching. I’m hoping that America is remembering. Because, make no mistake. September 11was an act of war. And thank the military that has lost almost 5,000 troops from that day, defending us. I don’t know what to say to jar America ’s memory. I want America to remember.

Port Authority Police and FDNY firefighters are seen here gathered beneath this banner.

The issues at stake will certainly affect the heart of American freedom, democracy, cultural values and tolerance. America is a tolerant country that allows for the free worship of all its citizens. But our tolerance has limits. Do we have to tolerate intolerant Islamic ideology and Muslims who preach intolerant Islam?”

Hindu human rights activists Narain Kataria, Prasad Yalamanchi and unidentified friend came from Mississippi and Chicago with banners and flyers highlighting the radical statements of imam Rauf and his jihadist roots.

Stephen Dyer and Gary Jules journalism students at York College, with Pamela Geller. Not one major network sent a satellite truck or camera crew to this event. Without bloggers this newsworthy event would have remained unknown to the public and history.

Pamela Geller is greeted by Hindu human rights activists Prasad Yalamanchi and Narain Kataria.

Bhupinder Singh Bhurji, Pamela Geller, and Robert Spencer. Singh Bhurji is the president of the  NAMDHARI SIKH FOUNDATION. The foundation is a member of the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam (HRCARI). HRCARI is a coalition of Hindus, Sikhs, Christians fromSudan, Egypt and Iraq, moderate Muslims and Jews — who are victims and targets of radical Islam around the globe. He said, at another rally:

“Radical Islamists are killing people in India , trying to dominate that nation. And here too they come with violence against “infidels.” We are “infidels united,” standing together, brown, black and white, against this epoch’s fascist movement. Radical Islam wants to dominate entire world. They want everyone to surrender. Islam radical or otherwise. They want to put the Islamic flag on White House.”

Because of Islamic terrorism, America and the world have seen massive new security measures become a way of life. Anyone openly critical of Islam, or terrorist ideology, must surround themselves with security, or live in hiding. Those courageous enough to confront Islamism are criticized by the cowards and appeasers of the left who seek safety by supporting the enemy. Moderate Muslims were silent when Theo van Gogh was brutally murdered in Amsterdam , just as moderate Muslims in the United States are generally reluctant to speak out against violent Islam. Moderate Muslims also face great danger in speaking out.

Geller and Spencer will press on despite the danger. They hope to inspire Americans to stand up and say enough of political correctness and work to stem the galloping islamization of America and Europe .
