The Pain In Spain Comes Mainly In The Form Of A Police Baton
A few weeks ago some rather disturbing scenes of police brutality were caught on tape following that particular day's austerity protest (now a daily occurrence). It now appears that Spain police has learned a thing or two from Greek Policemen especially when it comes to dispersing protesters. Expect these videos showing a violent smackdown of protesters on Barcelona's main Plaça Catalunya, to go viral shortly.

Looks like the Burning Man / Lolapalooza festival- style Spain protests are starting to go in the direction of Kent State. Euroteens getting clobbered by the batons of the police. Bad PR for the Spanish government: nobody can manage their crises any more, it seems.

Is that a 'Livestrong' band one of the cops is wearing? Shows deep compassion for cancer sufferers on one arm whilst the other pummels fellow human beings with a piece of wood - all with the protection of body and head armour - and the odd brother-in-arms.
The protesters are blocking traffic and refuse to move. I also have compassion for the commuters and commercial traffic. The protesters are targeting the wrong group.
I'm as busy as the next person but have no problem being able to navigate my way around protestors, or even join them if I didn't understand how futile it is to protest against what is going on. perhaps if the commuters and commercial traffic understood what the protestors were taking a beating and momentarily inconveniencing them for, they would also join in.

Putting aside the good guy/bad guy issue for a moment, don't these cops have horses? or water canons?
There are much more effective and less brutal/messy ways to disperse a crowd than running around in stormtrooper outfits, beating people with sticks...
They don't have to go all Birmingham on these hippies but I bet the prospect of getting one's fancy electronic gadgets wet is a pretty big deterrent these days. A few super-soakers might even be enough:

I was thinking the same, I have a military issue helmet and bullet proof vest and I would never of thought to bring them to a protest, but now I think it's a given. Imagine rows and rows of people in the same protection gear and they swarm a cop who gets out of hand with brass knuckles and pipes themselves. Then we'll see how bad a motherfucker is when he picks on someone on his own level.

Europe has had a multitude of protests with a diverse social / political backgrounds (from anti war, anti fascist, to radical Islamism to far right to environmental protests ad nauseam) and they all result in one fact: the state has an absolute monopoly on violence. Spain is not a homogeneous as many Americans think.
The Basques , Castilians and the rest do not especially like each other especially in the rural areas.

Actually, after looking at this again, you start to realize the power of non-violent protest, especially in this day and age of instantanous communication.
