Peter Schiff Formally Announces Senatorial Campaign

Tyler Durden's picture

Dear Friend,

Well, it looks like you have made a difference.

Based upon the unbelievable support that I have receieved from 10,000 supporters like you, I have decided to throw my hat into the ring to challenge Chris Dodd for the honor of representing the state of Connecticut in the United States Senate. I will announce my candidacy on MSNBC's Morning Joe show on Thursday, September 17 at 8:15am eastern time. Sorry for the short notice, but its important to honor commitments and keep these things under raps until the day the news breaks.

At this time last year I could not have imagined that that I would be making such an announcement today. I had never intended to become a candidate for public office. But these are extraordinary times. Our economy is falling apart in front of our eyes and Washington seems intent on making the wheels come off even faster. At a time when we desperately need adult supervison, the economically illiterate are running the show. As I love my country, it now seems clear that I must try to do something to help. The emotional and material support I have received from across the country has made the decision much easier.

So today it begins. As I'm sure you are aware, the rules in politics bear only scant resemblance to those which govern polite society. As a result, I am wading into strange waters, and I'm sure strange things will happen. But I promise to maintain my composure and give it my best shot. Based on the support that I have received thus far, I fully expect to be facing down Chris Dodd in the general election just 14 months from now.

As my campaign takes flight, I appreciate the patience and trust that you have shown. To commit time and money to a long shot candidate for high office is a hard choice. I hope to repay that trust with a first class campaign.

I look forward to your feedback and your continued support.

Thanks again,

Peter Schiff

h/t Ruth

I will not trust ANY MSM reporting on Mr. Schiff's campaign.

Hopefully, people on-the-ground will keep us all updated with the opinions of Grassroots America in Connecticut.

Go Peter!

I have a feeling the events of the next 14 months will be supportive of Schiff's campaign to dethrone the Doddster.

True, but Dodd must defend the status quo at a greater level of detail than he ot the powers that be wish.

What do "Gold Bugs" (i.e. Gold Bulls) have to do with Mr. Schiff's campaign, other than being a fraction of his possible support?

Mr. Schiff is followed by a much larger crowd than Gold Bulls.

Is Peter Shiff related to that crusading former DA for Manhattan named Adam Shiff? If so, he has my vote.

Peter's father is a long-time activist against the IRS and has written several books.

Unfortunately, he was recently (a couple of years) convicted and sentenced to (probably) life in prison, in Nevada (I believe).

I think it was for a refusal to pay federal taxes.Found it on wiki
'Schiff is known for writing and promoting literature that claims the United States income tax is applied incorrectly. He has lost several civil cases against the federal government and has a record of multiple convictions for various federal tax crimes.'

Lieberman with the help of the Reagan Democrats was able to avoid the will of the members of his supposed party and remained seated. He ran as an independent, got the Republican vote and some Dems, then the Senate Dems voted to let him retain his seniority. You all know this, I'm just repeating it to help us remember how difficult it is to end one of these guy's careers.

As a lifelong Connecticut resident, I can objectively say that most people are sick and tired of Chris Dodd. I know I am. The number of people who actually follow the economy closely and stay informed who oppose Dodd is getting larger daily. Chris Dodd does not have a clue.

I'm with you. He is a corporate shill who has become a little to comfortable in his chair over these past 5 terms.

I just hope that Schiff can get it because I want someone who can positively influence the economic debate and I just don't see that from the CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment...

Good. If enough people run on the anti-fed/anti-bailout message, Congress will be forced to act like fucking adults, no matter which whore is in office.

I'd like to write Dodd's campaign speech:

"Everybody knows that I'm only good for ass kissing and ass covering. I firmly believe that this is an ass covering type of moment."

Memo to Pete:  You have four typographical errors in your letter.  Also, I never go into a job interview and characterize myself as "a long shot."  Hire a new secretary and lose the self doubts.  Remember Gideon told God he wasn't up to the job and then went out and kicked some a&%.

We love you man and need Dodd out of there.  "Help me Obi-wan Kenobe.  You're our only hope."

Yes. He certainly isn't a shrinking violet. So from where comes the "long shot," letting himself down easy comment before the horses are even in the gate? At least he could offer the very tepid - "I'm for change," mantra. Gag. I think he needs a new secretary and campaign manager. The "I'm so humble" approach never sold well with me. Compared to the arrogance of the current crowd it has some appeal and offers differentiation. I will give it that much.

As a patriot, I hope Peter wins and is able to make a significant impact on our fucked up economic/fiscal policies....As an investor in PMs and a realist, in that, he is probably already too late to curtail the ass spiral we are in, I guess it doesn' t really matter.

lol Peter Schiff... C'mon now. When will the Austrian's learn to sit back and let the real economists make decisions? While the state of academic economics is far from perfect, Austrians have yet to contribute anything of substance.

Schiff was about as wrong on the economic situation as one can be... His track record is awful. Plus I don't really need to see him and Ron Paul giving each other reach arounds.

Where did you swoop in from?!? Have you read any of the posts on this site at all? If I were hired to help squash an effort by Schiff, I would probably post on boards to cast a doubt... but I'd be smart enough to at least align myself with the rest of the site.

I'm not hired to do anything. I just think Schiff is a hack who thinks he understands economics but doesn't. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out and no one needs to get paid to express that opinion.

I don't want to "squash an effort" by Schiff, as you put it. I've learned in politics you can't change the minds of those who have already made the decision that they are right. People on this site would support him either way. I won't sway you.

I have a right to my dissenting opinions as this site has theirs. I enjoy reading zero-hedge just like many others. I find it informative and it's always good to keep an open-mind and get a different, perspective on the financial industry and politics. I do feel some of things here are off base or wrong but I'm not being disruptive and don't intend to be. I don't think the creators of zero-hedge expected people here to be lemmings following their every word.

This is simply one issue I disagree on. Take it for what it is.

Let the real economists make decisions...?

Are you kidding me? Far from perfect might be the understatement of the year.

Most "real" economists are so grounded in their textbooks and formulas that they have no freaking idea how the real world even works. They misalign incentives and create unintended consequences left, right, and center.

Seriously, go talk to a finance professional and then go talk to an economist. Be sure to let us know which one you found to be more intelligent.

ps. Anyone who talks in absolute ideologies is a clown.
