You can legally grow 4 plants at a time in CA if you have a prescription to use it. You can even sell your product if small amounts. If there is 5 plants you will be busted, if you sell .5 oz to someone you can be busted. The CA law is perfect so far in making sure you can bust large sellers or producers. The CA law is set up to support a cottage industry nothing more. Big problem is also transporting the pot you grow over county lines, can be another big problem.
Easy to get a prescription, easy to buy plants for home growth. Easy to buy from pharmacy. At this moment hard to go big. Unless the state is going to make an exception for one grower who then sells to state approved pharmacy, maybe they can slide that through without argument.
well, there's nothing worse than an oligopoly on one's health, so we would not be for any exceptions for the rule, especially when it comes to something we're willfully ingesting and/or inhaling.

The law also allows growers and distributers to hold prescriptions for their patients and grow their plants for them. My friend has several grows and according to the law grows five plants for each of his patients. Transporting is the concern, but they are looking to decrease their exposure to risk by relocating to a place they can simultaneously grow/sell at retail price. As an example of this system in practice, my friends L.A. store was robbed approximately a year ago. The thieves were caught fleeing the store with over a lb. of product. Following the trial, the entire lb. of weed was returned to the owner by LAPD which had been held as evidence.
There remains some drawback. The parties currently acting as distributers (and many grows) are the same people who were doing it when it was entirely illegal and are decidedly gangster. Further, the backlash to medical marijuana is going to come from the rates of crime associated with its retail vendors. All cash, highly portable and entertaining inventory businesses remain a huge target for armed robbery and burglery.
