Photographer Detained For Taking Pics Of BP Refinery As Up To 100% Of Pensacola Area Reservations Canceled
Courtesy of BP, and everyone cutting corners wherever possible, it is becoming increasingly clear that the economic impact to the gulf economy will be devastating, particularly in the tourism industry, with “some condos and hotels reporting 100 percent cancellations.” And we have still to find someone who will willingly eat shrimp without a gun at their heads... and it is not just the surging price for the crustacean as the supply plummets. Imagine just how ugly it would get if Americans were allowed to have an idea of just how bad it truly is: it appears that the recently instituted "Beyond" First Amendment, where freedom of the press now carries a $40,000 fine and/or incarceration, has seen its first casualty: "A photographer taking pictures of a BP refinery in Texas was detained by a BP security official, local police and a man who said he was from the Department of Homeland Security." Who would have thought change you can believe in referred to the amendments to the constitution, starting with the first.
As more oil has spilled, fewer people have been willing to spend their summers at the beach.
Cancellations came in waves. One hundred cancellations were made around the second week of the spill, according to Schroeder. June 10 — the day the first tar balls hit the beaches — saw 1,000 more cancellations.
In addition, the phones have stayed ominously silent as new reservations have dried up. It’s been a week since the heaviest batch of oil hit the area, but the damage has already been done to the industry.
“It’s pretty safe to say about 75 percent of our reservations that have been on the books are gone,” Schroeder said. “Some condos and hotels are 100 percent cancelled.”
Oil cleanup has been a day-to-day process with cleanup crews working around the clock. Night cleanup has been the most effective because of the cooler weather.
“With every change of the tide, the impact is different,” said Sonya Daniel, public information manager for Escambia County. “It’s like a windshield wiper effect. There are good days and bad days. As long as the oil is still flowing, we’re going to have a chance for oil.”
Alex has been a major impact on the cleanup efforts, covering as much as 20 percent of Pensacola Beach and 40 percent of Perdido Key with tar balls. On Tuesday alone, workers collected 166,926 pounds of tar balls, oil material and sand.
The beaches remain open but under a health advisory to swim at one’s own risk.
“In the last two days, we’ve seen it impact the majority of our beaches,” Schroeder said. “We’d like to hope that after this hurricane spins through the Gulf and gets out of the way, this stuff stops coming on shore for a little while and gives us a chance to clean it up.
Yet it is becoming increasingly impossible to actually witness this, since as we reported, there is now a legally imposted distance barrier of 65 feet between any reporter and locations with oil booms, which are rapidly becoming virtually all. And not 24 hours after first reporting on this, did some reporter already find just how serious the administration is in withholding this brand new rule.
From MSNBC:
A photographer taking pictures of a BP refinery in Texas was
detained by a BP security official, local police and a man who said he
was from the Department of Homeland Security, according to ProPublica,
a non-profit news organization in the U.S.
The photographer, Lance Rosenfield, said he was confronted by the
officials shortly after arriving in Texas City, Texas, to work on a
story that is part of an ongoing collaboration between PBS and
ProPublica.
Rosenfield was released after officials looked through the pictures
he had taken and took down his date of birth, Social Security number and
other personal information, the photographer said. The information was
turned over to the BP security guard who said this was standard
procedure, ProPublica quoted Rosenfield as saying.
Rosenfield, a
Texas-based freelance photographer, said he was followed by a BP
employee after taking a picture on a public road near the refinery, and
then cornered by two police cars at a gas station. The officials told
Rosenfield they had the right to look at the pictures taken near the
refinery and if he did not comply he would be "taken in," the
photographer said according to ProPublica.

Police state. Fascist corporatism. They will tell you what they want you to know, and you will act they way they want you to act, and their profits will be secured.
Let's see exactly how long it takes people to wake up to what is happening. I'd guess, somewhere between 5 years and never.
hopeful much?
Unfortunately the over/under here favors the over (never) by a long shot...
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/bp-plc-and-administration-replace-first...
I ate shrimp recently. Without a gun to my head. I would like to be acknowledged as "found".
Tyler, I appreciate the good reportage, and I understand that a certain amount of hyperbole is a central part of the style, but that was a bit much. It's not the End of the World, or even the End of the Gulf, and certainly not the End of Shrimp (the Texas grounds have barely been touched) We've dealt with similar sized spills before. Ixtoc was in the same pool.
Step 1. Look in the mirror.
Step 2. SMACK YOURSELF.
Step 3. Repeat steps 1, and 2 until you wake up to reality.
Jasper, I would be interested on your thoughts on the current 'economic recovery' given that we've dealt with similar sized crises in the past.
nony,
1) I have seen no economic recovery, just a temporary steroid rush from unds stolen from our children.
2) The crisis I mentioned was Ixtoc. I will add Amoco Cadiz (about same time and size, though different ecosystem). And neither of those noticeably impacted the world economy.
3) The last economic crisis of the magnitude of the one we face now (which, I stress again, has freaking Nothing to do with BP) was about 300 years ago, and it was pretty dire. Expect a lot of grief, and change. And probably war.
We need people like you so we can be glad we didn't do the same. Thanks!
"The doctor said they have to cut off your what!?"
Jasper M, I would recommend you watch
http://bpoilslick.blogspot.com/2010/06/how-bad-is-oil-spill-flight-sheds...
maybe more than once.
then check back with us. (or not, your call)
I've viewed it. And I've seen worse - I have seen satellite composites that show the entire slick field.
And i read the attendant article, which describes one flight over the La coast, and comments about nearby areas.
Nothing in that article, or any other source, frightens me away from shrimp. I actually don't like shrimp, but a friend (from Louisiana) is a great cook, so it happens. If he makes it again, I will eat it again, because I am not frightened of ugly pictures of ONE patch of sea. Even if it is a big patch
If I may kill two birds with one stone here, to answer the next comment, I am aware of the circulation in the Gulf, just pointing out that contamination is not instant.
Also, the area where the Amoco Cadiz split up, off the coast of Brittany, was back to being a major fishery within 5 years. The shellfish took longer, but they came back as well.
In fact, if the Exxon Valdez spill is any guide, the dispersant use may be doing far more environmental harm than good - but it cuts down on the ugly pictures, which is all that seems to matter . . .
Texas got touched today.
What's in the gulf will swirl around. Currents do that to things in the sea.
It won't be much longer before Mexico's beaches start washing up tar balls.
Forget food from the Gulf. That's gonna be a total loss for decades.
AREA BP:
http://williambanzai7.blogspot.com/2010/07/area-bp.html
i live north of atlanta ga and there is some wierd shit going on here. for the first time in 25 years my dogwoods did not bloom,my tomato plants look like shit, for the last 2 months i have to put eye drops in 3 times a day,my sinuses are screwed up,my daughter and wife have a rash that nobody can figure out. could it be toxic fumes from the gom?
Ditto for me. Plants are dying, despite consistent rainfall. My eyes feel like they have glue in them. Sinus issues. But Atlanta does rank in the top 5 for overall air pollution.
Our pets HEADS are falling off.
There's an app for that...
Just sell 'em to the wheelchair bound blind kid down the street/hall!
while I'll probably get junk'd for mentioning this, your comment brings to mind what similar are reporting across the country, including the PNW where I live, particularly the sinus irritations & unexplained rashes. . .
have you done any research on chemtrails? they've been stepping up the spraying this year (almost daily for the past four months where I live) - we currently get one clear sky day out of ten, same for months. . . if you sleep with your windows open, you may be getting more toxins overnight.
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=19047
Clifford Carnicom has been researching and collecting data on chemtrails for over a decade, and has put together a non-profit documentary - you can watch it here:

I'll just say that many people are not ready to take in the idea that their government is deliberately poisoning / "testing" their various bio-warfare chemicals on the population for many years, and certainly spraying extensively for at least a decade. . . I do understand this - to take it in can be quite a paradigm shift from the "benevolent government" we've been taught to pledge allegiance to since childhood.
but look at your skies, from early morning, even when dark. . . someone is very busy up there. . .
best to you and your family.
Hey, Amigo's could you hard working americano's spare some $'s by bailing out British churches too.Recently, mounting evidence like this indicates the local churches have no faith in ALMIGHTY GOD and have refused to accept Gods Will even if this disaster was man-made and not an act of God proves they are just a bunch of MAMMON WORSHIPPERS after all.

Sure why not,
1. They could have been better prepared in a Google camera car and just say they were doing an “ update “
Now THAT would be permitted, as they'd be taking every single bit and byte off of every last computer tied into any wireless net anywhere and offering every last bit (no pun intended) of information to every law enforcement entity and the NSA upon casual request.
Yes, in fact that would logically be a priority, with the visual element suppressed.
Enjoy your BioMetric ID. It's for your own fucking safety, citizen asshole.
Or as the vp'd say; "Don't be a smart ass."
This is what get's me...if restriction to cleanup and booms is because of safety issues....why the fuck can people still go to the beach and swim?
Oh, I see. As long as there is a sign posted, then it's 'standard operating procedure' to violate 1st amendment rights. In that case, please crawl over to the 'free speech zone' next time you wish to post such banalities.
does he have a PhD in photography? the populace should be spared from seeing photos made from non-PhD photographers anyway.

http://www.wkrg.com/gulf_oil_spill/article/us-to-have-tighter-control-ov...
In the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the governments of the world have nationalized their water industries. They have arbitrarily decided that all the water is property of the government and they decide the price water, the control its distribution and politicians get to decide which sectors receive what amount of water. That caused a total distortion of the world's water industry and turned water in to a political product, which politicians can hand out to special interests and argue about in parliaments. Through price distortions and government intervention they have managed to create a shortage of the most abundant substance on the face of the planet…
The communist regimes in the Soviet Union, China, and Eastern Europe caused massive environmental damage, including the destruction of forests, rivers and lakes. The "welfare states" of the 20th century in the United States and Western Europe caused similar damage, albeit to a lesser extent. The over consumption caused water supplies to be salted, both above and under the ground, and caused other water resources to totally to dry up. This had terrible aesthetic, environmental, and economic consequences. The objective of the politicians was of course the opposite, to manage the nation’s water supply in a "just and right way", and to save the environment from "evil forces" of the free markets.

1. Who vacations on the Gulf Coast in the summer? Probably locals. It's hotter than heck and the humidity is brutal.
2. Forget about tar balls. There are dozens if not hundreds of volatile organic chemicals floating around in the air from the evaporating crude oil. Not a bit fan of methane either.
Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Actually, summer is the high season on the upper GC including the Florida Panhandle and the Redneck Riviera. I live in Texas, but I go. There are no prettier beaches anywhere. I wouldn't say locals, but rather more of a regional clientele. Not sure what your point is. The whole idea of a beach vacation is warm weather and I have yet to visit an ocean anywhere that didn't come with humidity. On the other hand, if comments like yours keep Yankees at home, I'm all for them. Keep up the good work, Hoss.
+1 ecomorph. There are enough already
+1 ecomorph. There are enough already to stress the seams
I'm not a Yankee, but a Cub fan. Be that as it may, if I lived in the vast desert that is Texas the Gulf Coast would look pretty good. Enjoy.

Nice to see all the snide remarks on the slide of America into the abyss. Cynicism sure is ugly.
A friend of mine just turned 96 years and he has more backbone left than most posters on zerohedge. Hopefully most of you will make enough cash and then leave the US, we don't need your f$cking me only attitude. If you think a punk like Barry Sotero is gonna destroy us I've got news for you.

Yes most here don't want any REAL SIGNIFICANT change they just want to protect their MONEY. The Daffy Ducks.
But if you think Obama is anything more than a figurehead then you got some learnin to do. Not a single politician has any REAL power. You should understand that by now.

Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line

No reason to get excited
The thief, he kindly spoke
There are many here among us

But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now

A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching

Heartbreak Hotel
"Inspired by the suicide of a young man who left a note with the line, "I walk a lonely street", songwriters Tommy Durden, then a steel-guitarist in Smiling Jack Herring and his Swing Billies,[2] and Mae Boren Axton, a teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, wrote Heartbreak Hotel in thirty minutes in 1955.[3]She was Hoyt Axton's mother, and also a publicist for Hank Snow whose manager, Colonel Tom Parker, would later also manage Presley.
So sure that the song would be a hit, Axton presented it to Presley's then manager, Bob Neal, and insisted it would be his first million-seller.[3] On November 10, 1955, upon hearing the demo for the first time,[4] Presley agreed and promised to record the song.[3] Axton offered Presley a third of the royalties if he made the song his first single release from his new label, RCA.[3] Presley first performed the song in Swifton, Arkansas on December 9, 1955[5] and declared it his "first hit".[5]
Is there any way that the Gulf Coast Zero Hedgers can post photos here (without being a contributer)? When the oil gets here (to the North Carolina coast), I'll stand on a boom and take all the photos I can.
Without getting arrested seems more like it...

else the streets would be thronging with. . . anger?
Seems to me that you're confusing issues, TD. This case doesn't have anything to do with the 65' rule. It has nothing to do with the Gulf spill. BP
's had a number of problems in Texas City. The refinery is probably a terrorist target as well. People are detained and questioned for odd behavior all the time. If I sat on the street (public) in front of your house and took pictures of your kids playing in the yard, would you call the cops? I would. Would you want them to detain and question the guy? I would. That's what they did. Then they let him go. Sounds to me like the system worked here.
Terrorist target? Terrorists? Who needs terrorists when you got the Fed Gubmint destroying the country from within. The states, ala AZ, need to take back what the Fed Gubmint Glutton has usurped and will continue to usurp until we install a gastric band on that Federal Swine.
Big Brother shows how inept he's become under the lazy, incompetent con artist from Chicago. This blackout of inconvenient evidence in the Gulf is becoming an education for the clueless media. Third world quality police state tactics don't cut it here. We expect something a little more sophisticated, something that the media can get behind.
Doesn't matter. Gulf will be de-populated soon. Poison air. Brown toxic fish. Tar-covered beaches. No one will have anything to do there except drill which they've proven they fuck up at.
So I suspect that by the end of the year several million people along the coast will pack up and move on. Provided BP toxic gifts don't kill them first.
Derivatives will tank. Banks will have to mark GoM land to market, which will be $0. More insolvencies. Another situation like the fall of '08. There won't be any money for bailouts or relocation of the roving masses.
It's our "dust bowl". It's the "oil bowl".
And there's no debating whether this will happen or the impact it will have. Only when.

Is it under Martial Law?Is it Private Property?.
If, not, then where is the news reporting these LE, and BP, DHS clods behavoir?.
Unless any of these three issues are relevant, they HAVE NO right to stop anyone from going there.
Someone, a LOT of press needs to show up, and make a big deal of this...............
Frankly, I am amazed it's not been, where's the Governor on these issues?, this should be brought to trial,to a judge, and is a clear violation of the 1st Amendment................
From just these details they have no right to impede you or the press from the area...........damn sure not any of the three agencies involved.

The Photographer's Right
http://www.krages.com/ThePhotographersRight.pdf
Actually this isn't anything new. If you were caught taking pictures of any infrastructure deemed "critical" by DHS since 2002, you could be detained. This included water utilities, nuclear power plants, refineries, crucial highway junctions, chemical plants, etc., and you were caught, odds are you received a FBI interview.
Eh, that does make sense. Some guy on a NYC subway platform decided to verbally hand my ass to me for snapping vacation photos with my dad a few years back. I would have ignored him if it weren't for the fact I didn't want to play 20 questions with the Bacon Boyz.
Hysteria. Trading security for freedom - we end up with neither. "Public Safety" my ass.
Concerning pictures from public areas. I take pics of homes all day long in my work as an insurance underwriter field rep.. If a knock on the door gets no reply, I take pics of all 4 sides, outbuildings, and hazards. I also take measurements. I wear a badge and carry a clipboard. Not once have I been questioned by anyone in 1000's of inspections. I actually have printed requests to look in winows for occupancy. I would guess terrorists and thieves could spoof me with some luck. Felt a little scared in the rough areas at times but am probably more in danger in the wealthier areas.
Just to add some context to this story...
I have been an amateur photographer since 1992, and starting with 9/11 I became very careful about when, where, and how to take pictures in public. I'm not saying that's right or consistent with a free society, but it happens to be reality.
Here are just a few incidents:
1. Back in 2003, a photographer in Akron was arrested for taking pictures of a local courthouse; that story made the local papers. He was later released, but only after a significant amount of hassle.
2. A friend of mine was questioned by police when taking pictures of office buildings in downtown Cleveland; common sense prevailed and he was not detained. Still, this kind of incident reminds you to be very careful. This happened in 2004.
3. Be advised that taking pictures in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area (federal park land) requires a license and payment of a fee. In actuality, this prevents wedding parties from using the scenery to stage large group photos. I heard about this one in 2007.
4. The prohibition on photos of infrastructure or large facilities is nothing new; I believe it goes back to October or November of 2001.
The real issue is that this has been going on for 9 years now. Paranoia has become a way of life along with the perpetual war.

It's okay for a corporation to bully people, with the government's help, in the name of 'security'.. that's what this is telling us. That if a corproation wants to detain someone and take their identity, that's okay.. but if a guy without proper identification from a terrorist country wants to hop on a flight anyway.. we say 'no problem'.. by the way, he's a terrorist with a bomb in his pants.. See how this works?
President Obama was put into office by BP. The disaster in the Gulf was a planned event to accomplish the goal of alternative energy. The blowout occurred on Earth Day just after the announcement that drilling would be permitted off the East Coast. Classic misdirection play. BP=Beyond Petroleum. Get it?

Comeon for God's sake. BP has a right to question people around their operations. You think their aren't lots of disgrunteled employees? There are so many whackos and opportunists wanting their 15 minutes of fame, the media lapdogs gives ANYONE time for ANY story. And the parents didn't even have to pay for their daughter's rescue at sea. Now, that's pathetic, and bluring the lines of criminality.

Anyone has the right to approach and question someone else about their concerns, sure. But you start sounding crazy when you say BP has the right to use state power and government thugs to force answers from the photographer.

I reside in Hawaii and my day job (I was told not to quit when I started trading stocks) is in the Hotel Business which I have been involved in since 1983! The last few weeks has seen our occupancy in ALL Hotels in Waikiki explode past 100% (many Hotels are running with overbookings). In fact I just finished work last night and every single Hotel in Waikiki was sold out!!
The fact that we were celebrating the birth/death of U.S. Democracy may have had something to do with it but one very odd fact struck me as I was walking home.... I noticed many people speaking in Spanish and with deep southern accents. This may not seem odd to the non-resident of Waikiki...but in my 3 decades of living here I have almost never heard spanish being spoken and especially amongst such a large number of people.
The gist of what I am trying to say is that I belive that those people from the lower United States who probably visit the Gulf coast every summer are now in Hawaii. Great for Hawaii but wonder what this portends for the economy of the lower Gulf states??
Occupancy for the rest of the summer has blown off the charts and I beleive that it is due to people choosing Hawaii over the Gulf...The ramifications of this demographic shift has yet to be felt...

Wow.
Thanks.
I love this first hand report.
Living in FL, I think that the East Coast(FL) could see higher RE prices in the coming years.
I couldn't disagree more. Areas that are still high because of their "desirablity" are going to plummet soon. Their economy is historically weak and dependent on tourism. When money is not going to tourism like it normally would in the "stimulated" economies of the past 30 years the whole area will start feeling the depression. The sun has gone to your head like most people down there.
"Their economy is historically weak and dependent on tourism"
Really, Mr. Genius?
The areas I am thinking about do not depend on tourism.
__
So what are they dependent on? Agriculture? hee hee. That's gone.
Military/NASA? Hee, hee. That will be gone.
Fishing? Hee, hee. That will be gone.
Florida depends on SS old farts, mostly. Hee, hee, that will be gone.
So, what are you depending on?
So what are they dependent on?
Winter.
So, what are you depending on?
Luckily, I am not dependent.
Another 14yr old idiot. Winter? What does that mean? Florida is a cesspool and will not survive the oil catastrophe. It is already committing suicide with fresh water depletion and the some of the worst water quality in the nation. And I was born in Florida. Florida would have NOTHING without SS dependents. I depend on myself.
Muir did say East Coast of Florida. Folks will move to the east side to escape the oil carnage on the west side. Demand increases. Affects prices.
I got what he meant by winter. I thought that response said all that needed to be said. Florida may run out of everything else, but it will always have winter in Chicago.
somewhat OT & local update (tampabay): yesterday was the first day i could think of that storms blew in nwestward to east, as most of our storms of recent has been thankfully coming from the east and south. air quality seemed too bad to enjoy outside in my opinion. as i locate website info that might be helpful to my family, i will post them here:

( ; - I look forward to your eye witness accounts, along with others that I know who live in Gulf Coast. I was born in Clearwater, many moons ago. Good luck and let me know if you have any technical questions.
Okay, I was wrong. ZH knows its enemy.
During the 2005 refinery explosion video was broadcast live, showing large swaths of the complex - much more than can be seen from a public roadside. Furthermore, the U.S. government's own Chemical Safety Board's 1 hour long video on the explosion investigation shows detailed video inside the refinery complex. If this was acceptable, and apparently still is since the video can be viewed at the CSB's website, what is the problem?

Next tactic -- no journalists, or college kids with cameras, or college kids pretending to be pimps and hookers will be allowed to rent beachfront rooms because they'll instantly send picture messages on their phones, wasting the millions of taxpayer dollars being spent to cover the immensity of the mess.
Hotel maid and maintenance staff in Pensacola should already be posting on offshore websites, if we look around a bit.
We can't even plug a broken oil well... but we can shut down the Internet! HA! Go ahead! That will be a great excuse for the rest of us to stop paying our bills. However, a rumored Internet shutdown would be a great excuse for a US stock market that sinks to the bottom of the ocean and coughs up tarballs.
Information always finds a way to squeeze out. It's as uncontrollable and global as the financial crisis. That said, what other URLs can we use when we find our beloved zerohedge.com has been shut down? Is the parallel universe ready to go?
Fight on ZH.
Cuba will invite them down to take the pictures there. This is not strictly an American disaster. And yes, truth will, eventually come out. If enough of us survive to hear it.
Those aren't the Droids you are looking for, Trooper...
Across the pond is no better, in fact, it is a lot worse.

It's like, in London, the lords have set up cameras EVERYWHERE, even within homes (you know, to stop child abuse, of course). But one little surf pulls out a pocket camera and SNATCH!
I don't remember many protesting over 100+ journalists killed in Iraq, and proof some were targeted by US troops. America-land of short memories. What do you expect?
Nuke BP.
This is a very small thing, in the grand scheme of thing -- but its very simplicity and replicability is something to consider. There are millions, if not tens of millions, in this very country who have no idea about and not the slightest desire to know more on the ongoing disaster. So this guy decided to try to do something about it:

Futile? Perhaps. Opportunistic? Not from where I sit, but even if so, so what? But if he gets just a handful of people to sit up and listen, one or two to get up and do something, it will have already been worth it.
& yet, Arizona is the villain. Where is the lamestream media?
Wow - if this story is true - then a new low has just been reached.
Bye bye Western Democracy.....
Oh great now the fascist cops are working with bp! Its weird to see a foreign company dictate to the American government and cops what to do and not do. Pathetic actually, especially when you think that the company is gonna be responsible for the death of our nation.
One commentator on CNBC had it right this morning. Since the oil spill started, why has the administration appointed someone in charge to manage the cleanup. There is BP and a bunch of government entities all doing their own thing. No coordination. Obama is failing us.
Really this is a great post from an expert and thank you very much for sharing this valuable information with us..................... windows vps | cheap vps | cheap hosting | forex vps
