Physical Silver Update

Tyler Durden's picture

And meanwhile, the repulsion to silver as exhibited by both the Comex (where as we predicted yesterday we see the first 32MM ounce handle in registered silver - a new record low), and Scotia Mocatta indicates that the silver paper and physical markets are in perfect unison. Or not.  But yes, the feedback loop mechanism of SLV unwinds will likely have a greater impact on the paper market until such time as it once again reverses and aligns paper and physical interests yet again.

With margin going to 100%, guaranteed.  The fiat price will be manipulated down this way under the guise of combating "evil speculators", commensurate with Benocide unleashing $10 gasoline and $5 loafs of bread with no inflation present whatsoever.

If the price moves up, the COMEX can be saved. They will be able to buy off the open market to meet delivery requirements.

It is low prices that will cause a default.

I would say it is analogous to the COMEX taking a bath in scalding water. The lower the price goes, the more of their body will be burned, and the longer it stays there, the more severe the burn will be. They may finally realize what is happening and climb out of the scalding water, but they will die from the shock (ie default).

For those of you who missed it, yesterday we had a little revelation of what we already know almost for a fact: that there are tons of paid trolls on this site talking down gold & silver. Member "Gold 36000", whose been accused before by our fearless warrior tmosley of being a paid troll, posted at 19:35 a typical gold/silver bashing post. Then he screwed up and he responded to himself with his same "Gold 36000" persona at 19:39, saying something like: "Gold 36000 for president! You know, I don't agree with you on everything, but most of the time you're right." Someone should have the link handy.

This line of thinking is what's wrong with ZH lately. If anyone dares to voice a differing opinion, they're junked and ridiculed. Some of you guys really need to grow the fuck up and not get bent out of shape when someone denigrates your precious little silver. It's just a piece of metal.

BTW, I own plenty of silver, but I don't start crying when someone insults it.

Fri, 05/06/2011 - 18:11 | 1249466 tmosley
tmosley's picture

Voice differing opinions all you want. Topcalling troll does that, as do others. The PM trolls are quite different. They come on and lie in an attempt to separate people from their physical metal.

These people don't offer opinions, they offer false facts and bent truths. They don't respond to any type of argument. I happen to be fairly good at quickly spotting inconsistencies in logic and among factual data. Such things will not be allowed to pass unchecked by me, whether they are for or against my own position. I have corrected numerous silver bugs on matters of fact that had they been true, would have built up the case for owning silver. But I didn't.

Similarly, I could join with the truthers and claim that 9/11 was an inside job, which would add a huge amount of ammunition to my argument that all governments are evil, and that anarcho-capitalism is the best way to exist, but I don't, because the facts that I have seen all point away from government conspiracy.

This is not about whining, or getting bent out of shape, it is about the truth and lies. The truth must be ferreted out at all costs, even if it means some vicious idiot like long juan silver (aka William the Bastard aka MeTarzanUJane aka dozens of other names I don't remember) tries to get me fired or sends a mail bomb to my house. It is that important. It's not unprofitable either.

So joining the Truthers, who's central claim you find inconsistent with fact, would "add a huge amount of ammo" to your argument? Which arg would that be?

Inconsistency in logic, bitchez.

Reading comprehension FTL.

Tmosley actually said that if he just wanted to pad his argument against power and corruption he could just throw in with the truthers since their platform would dovetail nicely with his.

Yet he does not do so since his main aim is to reach the truth and he does not agree with the truthers. So in the end he does not embrace thrutherdom for the sake of expediency.

Fri, 05/06/2011 - 18:40 | 1249561 buck4free
buck4free's picture

I comprehend it fine.

He claimed he could "add" to his argument, using arguments of others, that he has already examined and found inconsistent.

It doesn't add or pad an 'argument'; at best it adds (allegedly confused) "fans". There's a difference.

What, the part where he brags about being "good at quickly spotting inconsistencies in logic" which "will not be allowed to pass unchecked... whether they are for or against" his position?

Right after which he says that making a claim which he has found inconsistent with facts would "add a huge amount of ammunition" to an argument.

Such tactics can only add "ammo" to a campaign of "propaganda", not logical argument.

A is A, truth is truth.  It's constant.  Few people are willing to confront - let alone change - his or her worldview on sensitive issues.  If I read it correctly, tmosely's contention is the opposite of what you accuse: he claims to follow the truth.  What's wrong with that?

If anyone is guilty of propaganda it is you.

You're reading it incorrectly, if at all.

There is nothing wrong with following truth, or claiming to do so.

The inconsistency is simply the following claim: I could strengthen an argument by adding additional arguments(which I have already found/know/believe to be invalid).

Strengthen truth by adding non-truth?

Non-sense.

No there's not. There's plenty of differences in us. We don't all agree on everything. Some people think bin laden really got shot. I believe the iraqi story of the US breaking some of them out of prison. I like the iranian leader. He's a nutbag but he's surrounded by psychopaths and they tend to make you a little nuts. Banzai hates the guy. We are seeped in controversial opinions about huge ranges of issues. Mosley is even more of a gold bug than a silver bug. But I think like me he came to the conclusion that it was an easier and good way to do what all of us gold or silver bugs want to do. Protect ourselves. Not allow people to steal from us through inflation.

Forcing people to agree with everything is a poor expression of intellect and a sure sign you are totally fucking up jupiter and sagitarius expressions. Some of us are racist towards black. Some of us are racist towards jews some of us are racist towards whites.  I never gave much thought to jewish consipiracy but there's no harm in looking at it, seeing the history and expression of it.

But mostly zero hedge is a nice place to come and find a whole bunch of soverign individuals that will rip you apart in a soverign customized fashion. Something governments like to do to their people but hate when it's done to them.

Some (the most obnoxious) come here to beat down opinions that differ from their own.

Disconfirmation Bias

n. The tendency to accept supportive evidence of a belief uncritically, but to actively refute or discount evidence that challenges that belief.
Example Citations:

In other words, when we think we’re reasoning, we may instead be rationalizing. Or to use an analogy offered by University of Virginia psychologist Jonathan Haidt: We may think we’re being scientists, but we’re actually being lawyers. Our “reasoning” is a means to a predetermined end — winning our “case” — and is shot through with biases. They include “confirmation bias,” in which we give greater heed to evidence and arguments that bolster our beliefs, and “disconfirmation bias,” in which we expend disproportionate energy trying to debunk or refute views and arguments that we find uncongenial.

Let's see. What are the 3 highest expressions of jupiter.

Science, law, medicine.

Jupiter is expansive but you have to understand the inside/outside self other thing. Argueing can expand your intellect and get you to see things differently or you can attempt to compress everyone into a argument ecapsulation pill.

Jupiter expansiveness is often expressed as mass media, mass parroting, mass ego extension, massive ego and massive "righteousnous" which is just an attempt to make other people wrong.

Spending disporptionate times defending debunking or refuting a position is not disconfirmation bias. It's a power struggle. A dominate group creates and maintains a collective ideology. They easily outbattle the oposition at first. But the understanding grows and focus shifting matures until its easily brought into correct focuses to shake it. It become more and more embattled and eventually falls.

That governments, and specifically our bloated and out of control government, commit tremendous acts of evil in order to cultivate power for themselves.

I would LOVE to be able to point to 9/11 as an example of a government out of control.  But I can't, because their role was only indirect (ie blowback for propping up strongmen in the Middle East--violently).

Also, if you point out a logical inconsistency, you should enumerate it.  If you question my premises, then do that.

Tmos,

I question no premis of yours. For what its worth, I agree with all of them.

The inconsistency is simply the following claim: I could strengthen arg A by addiding arg B (which I have already found to be invalid).

This might buy some followers, but it does nothing to build a strong argument.

The argument I was making was about my method or argument, so I can see where your confusion comes from.

If I was not interested in truth, and only interested in bolstering my own bias, or "winning" a given argument, I wouldn't have looked any deeper, and thought about how heat can travel through tunnels and retain enough energy to melt steel.  I wouldn't have thought about the enormous forces involved in the fall of a 100+ story building rendering steel and aluminum into into nanoparticles.

I would have just accepted it as truth, and run with it.

That said, I am not perfect.  But I try to be.

Our government's role was only "indirect"? Really? Please parse that logic out for me. As far as the evidence suggests there are elements deeply embedded in our political, military and covert establishment that were highly complicit. How is that indirect? Explain to me why anyone wouldn't be long silver.

I mean "long" not as in 3 days or 15 minutes. I mean long as in "24 months-10 years" long. As in, an actual investment. Not a for-profit attempt at riding the momentum or short term speculative bubbles. In a few years this "huge" correction will look like a pretty opportunity on a long term trend.

The reason people junk and "ridicule" these people is the proportionate opposite of how much they explain to us that we're stupid for holding physical silver/gold instead of paper... because at the end of that day that's all I hear in their arguments. Paper profits don't really matter to me at this stage in the game. I'm not a moron. I had AGQ and I also held ZSL to hedge against my "hedge" so to speak so I'm literally at very little of a loss and as I saw the tide turn I shifted my paper position to be SHORT silver. Who wouldn't? It was clearly crashing.

I'm concerned with a collapse. I'm pretty sure about 50% of the symptoms of a crash are an actual crash (very little forewarning), the other 50% is essentially everything we have going on right now in the markets and the global economy.

I've agreed with Dangertime a few times. Math Man too. Everyone says he's a "troll" (and he may be!) but he's just more of a trader mentality and I'm sure he's made some good paper profits on his shorts if he actually had them. While some of what he/they (the trolls) post pisses me off, he doesn't junk and talk shit to me every time I post about silver and share my opinion so I return the favor in not being a douche for no reason other than to persist the previous flaming.

At the end of the day money is money and paper is paper. The majority of these guys seem to change their positions with every comment anyway so that's another reason they get junked like crazy.

Then you have dicks like Hamy who just post shit that no one wants to read. Troll or not.

Fact is we need the trolls to vet our own thinking otherwise we can easily fall into stupid, uncritical group think saying things like silver @ $50 (and the way we got there) is sustainable.

Anyone attempting to rid us of "trolls" does this site a disservice and isn't willing to allow that their thinking may be wrong.  Particularly in the short or even mid term as so many of the permabears (but bears for good reason) wouldn't ever have guessed in March '09 where we would be today...or next Month...or 6 months from now.

Every buy / sell are two parties generally with radically different outlooks on that asset.  Probably best to know what the other side of that trade is thinking?!?

Some pertinent info:

...one of the stories is that Carlos Slim, the current richest man in the world, has presold more future gold and silver production from the mines that he owns.  I have not seen one story reminding people that Slim’s companies last October reported that they had pre-sold 27% of anticipated gold production through the end of 2013 at an average price of $1,189 per ounce and 43% of expected silver production through the end of 2013 at an average price of $18.71 per ounce.  Although Slim is apparently savvy enough to own such mining interests, he is obviously getting bad advice or making poor decisions on how to maximize his profits in these markets.

It's funny how a correction within a bull market--and, yes, it was rather fast a large--with raging fundementals gives all the Federal Reserve Note bulls their 15 minutes of fame that they have been on the "right" side of the trade with the "bubble" popping.

It's totally moronic. I would like to see an 87% margin hike on Apple and see how it fared--depsite what the fundamentals mean, or not.

I believe if folks thought Silver was a bubble at 49, I cannot imagine what they will be thinking when it's at 150 oz. Oh, but wait, they will still claim their acumen when it retraces from 150 to 140.

Your comments, while intended to be sarcastic, are filled with irony.

Had you bought an iPad at full retail and sold it unboxed you probably could have made $50 or so if profit selling it on Ebay.

Had you bought a Chevy Volt and immediately needed to sell it you probably would only have lost 10% on your purchase.

Instead you followed the herd of blind mice and lost 30%+ on your enornmous speculative gamble.

I'll be looking at silver when it gets back down to its industrial value which I believe is in the low $20 range.

He claims to attack "shameless pumpers", but that is a codeword for "tmosley", the only person he ever attacks.  He attacks me because I stood up to him on several different subjects and made a fool of him, even on his own home turf of "peak oil".

As such, he has developed a vendetta against me.  Up until recently, he was only using half truths (such as "tmosley said everyone in Tokyo would be dead or evacuated by now"--without mentioning my qualification--unless drinking water was restored), but he is now resorting to flat out lies, claiming that I said that there was no silver available anywhere.

He has publicly self destructed.  He doesn't even bother to respond to my retorts any more, because they are 100% true, and he KNOWS it.  Instead, he must now stick with lies and one liner insults.  My favorite is that he insults me for being knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects, likening me to Cliff Claven.  You know, except that I'm right some 99% of the time.  He doesn't acknowledge that.  He just hates knowledge that doesn't conform to his worldview.

i STRONGLY disagree with this sentiment.

WE HAVE TO VOTE.

because that is the ONE area where we have an equal (if not greater) amount of input into things as the elites do.  if you don't vote just because you don't like politicians (who does?), then you're just enabling them to fuck everyone over which is exactly what's happening right now since only about 1/4 or less of us vote in all elections - local and national.

Only candidates acceptable to the elite are permitted a spot on the ballot. By voting for the lesser of the two offered evils you give sanction to your oppressors.

Today's vote: Would you like to be bashed in the head with A) a hammer or B) a crowbar. If you don't vote you have no right to complain about the outcome!

+1. Nice post!

George Carlin shared your view, and so do I. Even if we did have a candidate worth voting for, it's the counting of the votes that determines the outcome. Given the ease of hacking voting machines and the lack of transparency of the election process, what's the point? Voting only gives them legitimacy, and if it actually was an effective means of creating governmental change, then it would have already been outlawed. It's just a show.

all politics are local.  and though you may not have much of a voice in who gets to occupy the white house for four years, your vote carries a lot more weight in deciding who gets to represent you in congress where, you know, they once impeached a sitting president.

the only reason why they've been able to sell you out is because they don't fear you.  and and they don't fear you because they know you won't exercise your right to vote. but political landscape has already changed dramatically over the last decade alone.  we have a lot more information at our disposal.  a single twitter shot across the bow or a youtube video can ignite a national discourse (or revolt in the middle east). but since we're too fucking stupid to revolt in america, the single most effective weapon we have at our disposal is our vote.  and if you don't vote, you lose and have no right to complain.

(1) PMs delivered a better annualized return than stocks

(2) Manipulating markets with printed money can only accelerate the pace of inflation

(4) Nobody can fight a total economic collapse longer than 5 years. Ask the USSR.

RT,

Great respect for your picks and approach...I appreciate your charts too.

At face-value I agree, and if you're a trader, the paper metals were no bueno this week for sure (SI- pick-your-call-of-the-month on the comex absolutely crushed).

But if you're holding physical in response to the Fed's holding $2.5T and counting on their sheet, the monetary base exploding and the total amt of debt threating to burn the house down and comex inventories on the decline then you've already committed for the long term: the score board for one week just doesn't matter.

They can only raise margins to 100%...then what?  In light of that becoming more a possibility it looks like physical is on sale.

I heard guys here saying they were ordering physical within 2 - 3 days after the first big plunge.

No different that everyone buying the dip on Internet and tech stocks during the first big plunge days in the spring of 2000.

Believe me, I remember it well, because I was one of the stupid people buying those dips and I got destroyed until mid-2001 when I started shorting prior to 911.

I learned my lesson, that when a bubble pops, GTFO fast!!!

LOL....

Tech stocks only had intrinsic value when Greenspan opened the credit floodgates by deregulating how banks underwrote financing.  Money flowed every which way, especially into dot com speculations.

Interestingly enough, Silver is now outperforming tech stocks during a time when credit has tightened.  That's because it is a tangible asset, unlike some tech gimmick with a P/E ratio of 689:1

Not a scratch, it missed entirely.

That thing over there that has it's arm off is a cardboard cutout.

Literal strawmen getting beaten down here.

Robo, too bad it can't be said for stocks that they can't go to zero....like physical PMs.  Physical silver has never gone bankrupt, but thanks very little, once again, for your apples to oranges to silver comparisons.

This can't be emphasized enough.

SLV, the LBMA, and the COMEX, on the other hand...
