Pima County Sheriff: "Loughner May Have Had An Accomplice"

Tyler Durden's picture

Salon provides some unpleasant additional information on yesterday's headline news, which many had already suspected: namely that Loughner likely did not act alone. "Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said at a news conference in
Tucson on Saturday that authorities may have a photo of another suspect." Unfortunately, with a nation increasingly on edge, this possibility will likely turn out to be true. We can only hope that other like-minded individuals do not take this event as an escalation signal, and proceed to take vigilante "justice" into their own hands.

From Salon:

The Arizona sheriff helping investigate the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others says the gunman may not have acted alone.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said at a news conference in Tucson on Saturday that authorities may have a photo of another suspect.

Dupnik says officials believe a suspect in custody may have come to the grocery store parking lot with another person, and that person was in some way involved.

Dupnik would offer no other information.

People familiar with the investigation have identified the suspected gunman being held as 22-year-old Jared Loughner.

Law enforcement officials also believe Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was the intended target of an armed attack in Tucson. Dupnik said at a Saturday evening news conference that "I don't have information about whether she was the first person shot, but yes, I believe she was the target."

The sheriff said Giffords was shot once in the head, and 18 other people were shot. Six are dead.

Reagan repealed the Mental Health Systems Act in 1981, and responsibility for mental health care was passed to the states.  He then reduced federal health care funding to the states by 25% with the Omnibus Budget Reconcilitaion Act of 1981.

1981—President Ronald Reagan signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981. This act repealed the Mental Health Systems Act and consolidated ADAMHA's treatment and rehabilitation service programs into a single block grant that enabled each State to administer its allocated funds. With the repeal of the community mental health legislation and the establishment of block grants, the Federal role in services to the mentally ill became one of providing technical assistance to increase the capacity of State and local providers of mental health services.

I seem to remember Democrats being in control of the House in 1981. And that little raging recession of the time.

I wonder if you only wear one size fits all clothing.

I also wonder if you remember what a terrible place those government funded "hospitals" were. They made use of lobotomies, primitive electroshock "therapy", and forced sterilization. Real Nazi stuff. Maybe that's why you like it? That is the reality of the state given power over the weak, after all.

Now, I am not trolling, and I agree with tmosley.

There is nothing more horrible than removing the liberty of one man and subjecting him to unvoluntary treatments by force "in the name of the State", notably when this man is totally able to reason.

I have seen many sad - and true - stories about this, and these were very depressing.

That's why I've started trolling. I have been utterly shocked and disgusted by the very puerile whining of what were supposed to be smart men.

The whole thread (1315 comments) on the shooting is fucking ridiculous. A fucking Democrat bitch who voted for the TARP gets shot (she's not even dead), and everybody starts ranting against firearms and violence.

Wow. Wasn't this supposed to be a libertarian site?

Millions of people get shot everyday, tens of thousands die in atrocious circumstances, and nobody gives a fuck about them, because the fucking medias do not talk about them.

I hate hypes. They reveal the stupidity of mankind. And I'm very sad I discovered it on ZeroHedge.

Got compassion?  Despite being against your political views she seemed like a fairly decent person.  Our Founders provided a way to get rid of people that don't represent us, it's called a vote.

"Millions of people get shot everyday, tens of thousands die in atrocious circumstances, and nobody gives a fuck about them, because the fucking medias do not talk about them."

Who would ever have thought that the death of a person that affects our everyday lives and that really shows the deterioration of our once great country would harness more concern than a person halfway accross the world that dies of less than desirable circumstances.  So tell us oh great one, how do you shoulder the burdens of the entire world?

And the days in the year still number about 365.

So are you trying to say that close to 10% of the worlds estimated population is involved in a gun related trauma every year?

Even 5% stretches the imagination thin.

Our country will have a civil war. It is obvious from just reading the posts on this blog. This once was a country where all Americans would be appalled at what has happened in Arizona, but here you can find those who find justification for this. A nine year old child is dead. There once was a time, not long ago, in America when Black people couldn't vote.  Your reference to when ALL Americans would be appalled is a reference to a time when ALL Americans were ignorant because they didn't have access to the Internet and weren't able to see through the facade of the corporate machine that runs this country.  It was me 20 years ago.  It's not me now.

The child is the only innocent one in all this.

I don't believe in violence as a solution to most problems, other than the guy's about to attack me problem, and I certainly don't believe that randomly spraying ordnance into a crowd of unarmed people is ever a moral thing to do, but, in the end, this woman who got shot was a cog in the corporate machine, she represents the machine, and her injury/death represents an attack on the machine.

The fact that "all Americans" aren't appalled by this is simply a reflection that not all Americans still believe the garbage that was rammed down their throats in the idiot factories they attended while young.

It is not possible for any atom to be out of place.  Therefore regardless of our WISH for reality to be otherwise, Reality is.

It is our Emotional Inability to accept reality that is the cause of Emotions and the interesting behavior that they compel.

Note: It is our inability to accept Reality that leads to Emotions.

That is a very concise definition of insanity.

And, yes, every single person is insane.

This is not a rational place, these are not rational beings, there is no logic or sense.

In a stricly physical/natural view, everybody is indeed insane, as emotional biases impair the acceptance of reality, and the non-acceptance of reality is what defines insanity.

Some people are just more 'insane' than others, and start shooting people randomly. They broke the social contract, so they are the only ones labelled 'insane' by the society and the medias.

No strange thoughts in there, only basic science.

Giffords is an Israel-firster.  How can politicians put forth that Americans support Israel just because it's a "democracy in the Middle East"?

Israel is a terrorist state, sucking billions from America.  We have few common values.  For example, we have open borders Israel  controls immigration, we have multi-culturallism while Israel is racist (even a jew and goyim cannot get married legally), etc.

One of the few things we do have in common is that the US and Israel are both run by Israel-firsters abusing America for Israel's benefit, protection, and expansion, but that's about it.

Libertarianism as a competing political philosophy is dangerous to TPTB in this country. Libertarianism is gaining favor over the philosophy of "control" being used by TPTB.  It does not surprise me at all for TPTB to try and paint this individual and this event as connected to this "wierdo libertarian" philosophy.  If TPTB weren't behind the incident to begin with they sure wouldn't mind using it to discredit a competing political philiosophy.

What my initial gut told me too. Cable news coverage wants this to be THE story forever. All the other big news that was happening is instantly forgotten. Fox and CNN are setting this up for a what next? When JFK got shot in the head they just swore in the next president and swept everything under the rug. It's like they want to call in Dr. Phil and have an intervention with the American people to see what to do next. Regardless of the shooters motives the government is going to make up the entire story for us from beginning to end like they always do including ways to advance the homeland security and we can count on that. I'm sure Rahm has already called Obama with his patented advice: "Never let a crisis go to waste."

fast scrolling through the weekend's trollage mess, hoping for a bit of NON-party-san, un-im-FORMed opinion shaped by fucking TV - so disappointing to see how captured some of the posters here are - wasn't going to add anything, but your post & the replies following lent a bit of non-mouth-breathing room. . .

so I'll just say, why are people forming definite conclusions based solely on (conflicting!) reports available so soon after the event?  why are some of you so narrowly focused?  widen the lens to include more information, over time, and you may find a wider truth as well - unless narrow is your preference, of course.

This is a typicle governmental setup. Sacrifice a few people for the greater good (out of control government)

if you've been hanging out at ZH for a while, you might KNOW this to be an ongoing truth. . . I'm still collecting pieces of this story around the 'net, and I'm not sure of the whole picture yet - and most likely will never have most of the details made available for me to assess, but I DO know that the corporate government that has captured this nationstate has a recognisable agenda, and that this event is most likely going to be used to further that agenda, irrespective of whether the "gov't" is behind the event - okay? it WILL use this to push something forward towards the eventual goals - remember, they never let a good crisis go to waste.

so WATCH what the magician's OTHER hand will be pushing relative to laws & restrictions over the coming weeks - there's your tell.

also, I found this of interest, and I'm capable of holding it as a piece of information that may or may not be a puzzle piece over time:

Rep. Giffords was recruited to run for Congress in 2006 by Rahm Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff who was at the time head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Mr. Emanuel noted that she was shot while "doing the Congress on your corner" kind of event that he pioneered in his home district in Chicago and that he encouraged new Democratic lawmakers to do regularly when back home.

http://tinyurl.com/23oxd5g

(it's from the Wall Street Journal, FYI)

this may or may not be an important piece of information going forward, but we know how snippets get rewritten & left out of the narrative, post-"traumatic event" right?)

if you truly study history, you already know that it's not the event, it's the agenda, the outcome, that's worth most scrutiny.

Totaly stupidity.I have never seen so much crap and spite spewed out. Talk about turning ZH into a toilet.

They guy is a nut case, he would have used any rationale he could find handy to justify in his addled mind to go shoot somebody. He is not representative of any ideology, he representive of people with severe mental illness.

And his reading list as a 21 year old is not unusual. Goodness when I was 30 odd years younger I and others used to read Machiavelli, Egar Alan Poe, Sharespear, Rand, Mein Kampf, Neitschke and anything that was different from the norm.

And I'm on no side of the poltical divide, in fact I reckon this black and white left and right divide is full of shit and I am surprised that anyone on ZH still thinks in those terms.

It's important to have and to preach libertarian principles otherwise when this joke of a system collapses we'll just get the same thing we had or worse.  Just because the whole system is run by corrupt republicans and democrats who are basically the same in all the important areas in no way makes this ridiculous liberal entitlement "rob peter to pay paul" mentality acceptable in any way shape or form.  That is a battle that still needs to be continually fought.

Well I have lurked here for a long time and this is the first time I feel compelled to actually comment.

So I have this to say to the US of A:

Even though I am far away, and I am not American, I am hurt that this has happened. I know that you, the USA, can come together to get over this.

A politician who would take the time - actually make the time - to put out a stall and meet their constituents is - seriously - a rare thing .

And I don't think that is a bad thing. At least she was trying to reach out instead of retreating into the machine.

I  do not care if she was R or D or Independent. She showed a bit of face and that is a damn sight more than you would get with a lot of others.

Please stop the partisan bullshit that each side is trying to colour the issue with.

I am watching this unfold on UK TV, and it makes me feel sick the way you guys are biting each others balls and trying to win points against the other "team".

End Of.

I get and appreciate your concern and comment. It's not supposed to be happening in the US, but it is. There's a long history of the gun suddenly shattering the calm and changing the course of US history. There have been many presidential assassinations. For those of us who remember, the last time this happened it unleashed 2 decades of violence and turmoil that harmed the country and cost it dearly in domestic self-respect and international respect.

People who were not born here have no idea what a violent and lawless place the US can quickly become. New York city today is as safe as Disney World but was once so unsafe tourists didn't dare come and citizens lived in terror.

Surrounded by uneducated lunatics I am I am.  From what I see alost no-one reads any source material and most for their world-view from reading other people's synopsis.  Not a good idea in this age as most to all thoses synopses are spun to support one preversion or another.  For example, Adam Smith's meaning of "free" markets is one where every person has access without paying rent.  Antithetical to the modern system where to get access you need to pay tribute to the banks.  Free does not mean no regulation.  It means no rentiers and if the regulations prohibit the banks and other gatekeepers from collecting rents then they are in the service of"free" markets.  Now of course all our regulations are exactly the oposite but that is a different arguement.

Yes it's very important that the powers that be maintain a monopoly on violence.

Things that government should own to make slaves.

Respect- Monopolize respect through legitimization.

Trust- Monopolize trust by giving them no place to turn for answers except you. Don't like the taste of colgate. Tough bitch it's all we sell.

Violence- Nothing makes you more confident and more secure than destroying all who oppose you.

Food-Some guy isn't making your food. An organized gang is. Big business at it's finest.

Clothing- Go to the Gap.

Shelter- You're going to have to visit a bank for this.

I'm not inciting violence, encouraging violence or saying it's the only way. It's a two layer attack. Lies and violence. If the lies don't work then violence wil be used. As long as you think it's wrong then they've removed one of your problem solving and resolving skills leaving you with nothing to fall back on but lies. Turning you into a cowardly liar that benefits them.

Question question question. Until you can defeat them logically. Then prepare for and expect violence to be used against you. Do not go into this with the situational awereness of belief and how things should be. Go in it will full understanding of how things work and why. Hurt people until you can threaten them with violence and get them to do what you want. Keep hurting them if they resist too much. This is their juice and it's what they like to drink. They won't settle for any other kind of refreshment.

How many "mundanes" were murdered by agents of the state in the past year?

How many of them are household names?

How many politicians had press releases expressing sympathy for their families and condemnation of the perpetrators?

Oscar Grant was also a human being, was he not?

Is the absurdity of the sanctimonious decrying of violent acts by men who hold a monopoly on the use of coercive violence (and use it every day) something no one else sees?

Government is violence.  It is the coin of it's realm.

In spite of the unceasing efforts made by men in power to conceal this and to ascribe a different meaning to power, power is the application of a rope, a chain by which a person will be bound and dragged along, or of a whip, with which he will be flogged, or of a knife, or an ax with which they will cut off his hands, feet, ears, head—an application of these means or the threat they will be used. Thus it was in the time of Nero and of Ghenghis Khan and thus it is even now, in the most liberal of governments.”  Leo Tolstoy
