PIMCO and Zero Hedge?

Zero Hedge's picture

In an article titled "The dumb money is buying equities" dated August 17, 2009, City Wire's Charlie Parker writes:

Please understand me, if you are a buyer of equities at the moment then I am not calling you stupid.

I am just saying that you are acting with the stupid. In fact, it is not really me that is saying this, but Pimco.

The mammoth US fixed income operation, which is most famous for
bringing investor Bill Gross to the world, also offers a prolific
blogging service from its fund managers. The service, called 'Zero
hedge', comes with the rather unnerving catchphrase 'On a long enough
timescale the survival rate for everyone drops to zero'. Anyway.

Here at Zero Hedge we routinely field questions about our backing, our contributors and staff, their backgrounds and their identities.  Obviously, and though we try to be polite, we generally tell the press to go pound salt on this topic.

We don't discuss the identities of individual or collective contributor or staff names on Zero Hedge.  Period.  The content we publish here either stands on its own merits or not.

Tyler Durden and Zero Hedge are not any one person.  No Zero Hedge, staffer, author or contributor is an island.  In fact, as we point out in our manifesto:

The author is nothing.

The content is everything.

If more mainstream media outlets had paid attention to this mantra, they might not be in the grips of a painful, secular decline today.

While we are quite strict on the topic as an organization, we do not impose our reticence with respect to the press on our authors and contributors. Individual authors, staff and contributors are free to say whatever they like to the press if and when they are contacted- with some exceptions.  The identities of other contributors or members of the Zero Hedge team, for example, are strictly off limits.

Disagreements over facts and opinions should be carried out on the basis of factual interpretation, not based on extrapolation of a priori assumptions about the bias of an author, which traditionally and nearly universally, devolves into ad hominem attacks.

Where gossipy allegations like "Hank Paulson is Tyler Durden" or "Michael Milken is Tyler Durden" crop up, all we can do is shake our heads, smile thinly and post the article on our front page for you to peruse.

As we continue to grow, we expect more and more of these.  The price of popularity, we suppose.

All this aside, we are a grassroots organization.  While we may or may not, in fact, have PIMCO managers as contributors or staff, even if we did know that for sure, we certainly wouldn't comment on it here.

I second the motion. It doesn't matter who or what Zero Hedge is or isn't, only that truth is publicly spoken to power.

While it's difficult to determine exactly what's the truth lately, it's far easier to see the lies. While I don't always understand the market geek spoken here, I do recognize the truth.

Let me get this straight, your argument against possible conflict of interest and manipulation is "The author is nothing. The content is everything."? Sorry, but that's patently ridiculous. I've been a reader for months now, but if in fact the majority of authors/reviewers/publishers of this blog are employees of any one institution, and there is no disclosure of such, then that is a serious problem. Sadly, I'm finding it harder and harder to be an informed consumer of information anymore.

It would be interesting if PIMCO fund managers were actually writers for ZH... that would take some balls to deviate from Pimco's talking points if you actually worked for them.... but I doubt ZH would need us to 'click the ads' if PIMCO was a silent sponsor of this blog because it would be fully funded by PIMCO to spread the company mantra... it doesn't feel that way to me.  But whoever writes on this blog knows alot about alot.  And finally, I don't know if PIMCO would appreciate Marla's music like we do...

Fight club would take PIMCO and Paulson. What a great way to redeem yourself if you knew you were caught up in something larger than yourself, that you had a hand in creating, that did so much damage.

Folks are drawn to this blog because they want a taste of what this staff is living as they create the synergy that is this blog. They are working for something they believe in. Right there-- Wow! Chances are good they have decent relationships with each other (hope so). They obviously have an outlet for their creativity. Finances may be rough, don't know, but the kinds of things I just listed are the very things we are selling our souls for so that the finances won't be rough. Literally.

If you let it, the whole concept is a nice mind fuck, just slip it on in there and move it around. We are all permeable identities. We always were. The identity is the container that both enables and limits what is possible. The identity is something we become enslaved to. So enslaved that we get hung up on earning money instead of being good stewards for our planet, our community, our families, and our selves. Isn't that what went wrong here?

I don't want to put you fuckers on a pedestal. Then I'd need to kill you, see (my avatar has a gun) pedestals are part of the problem. But I do want to share with you that there is a wonderful spirit about this place which is contagious.

I don't need to know you to feel you. I don't need to always agree with you to see where the heart is. Thanks for what you do. You give me hope.

Even if you are PIMCO hedgefund managers...

Given Tyler's admission of proximity to the Wedge in a prior post (http://www.zerohedge.com/article/guest-post-china-economic-catastrophe-u...) which every SoCal denizen knows is a famous/dangerous surfing spot in Newport Beach, and PIMCO being the only financial institution in Orange County worth a damn, some PIMCO affiliation wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I originally thought Tyler was Andrew Ladhe of subprime-shorting, fortune-making, hemp-legalizing fame given his recent retirement, poison pen and SoCal location, but I could be wrong.  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/money_co/2008/10/the-most-entert.html

As long as "Tyler" keeps posting factual information that keeps me informed about what the Fed is doing, I'm good.  This site does a damn site better than mainstream news outlets, which I have given up on.

You guys are doing a great job.  Keep it up.

Serious comment:  the US secret services no doubt have already determined the identity behind every contributor to ZH -- his/her background, location, source of funds, family, friends, contacts, you name it.

It would take the police state five seconds to disclose all of the above, most likely leaked through the MSM.  However good ZH's anti-hacking facilities are they are no match to the guys who hold all the keys to all digital encryption.

It is childish to pretend that anonymity is an option, particularly online.  If it suits the powers that be, then the identities behind ZH will be exposed.

If the US Secret Service knows the brand of dog food I buy would they please pick some up on their way over tonight.

On a more serious side... I watched my father over the years constantly writing Letters to the Editor to enlighten the public to problems in our community... and watched the public respond in a positive way.

I believe strongly in Freedom of Speech... and so I speak whenever I get a chance... as did my father.  I frequently work with the local newspaper on uncovering issues that the State has neglected in my industry... and the State is so busy trying to get themselves out of a paper bag that I feel no sense of concern.

What is the worst that the Secret Service can do... so you lose your house, your assets, your job... I have started over more than once and each time I become more financially successful than the time before.

But we Americans have led a very coddled life compared to the rest of the world... so I think we are more fearful of retaliation because we have 'more to lose'.   We need to get over that fear... AND SPEAK MORE FREQUENTLY AND LOUDLY... before we do lose our voice.

I believe you got the wrong agency there. That agency is more interested in some of the people who comment here, but really, their hands are full.

You can't organize, then all disappear at the same time and expect that no one will put the pieces together. Not that I mind, the site is way cool. I'm glad that I found you all. Best of luck.

Not that any of this really has any bearing beyond having some fun with the speculation, but has anyone else noticed that most (if not all) of the Bloomberg screen captures are on PST (example: after hours trading volumes being discussed in post, time on screen is 13:00 - 13:30). All of which may merely mean that Tyler(s)'s terminal(s) is/are set to PST, not that the terminal itself is in that time zone.

Also, bear in mind that there "is" A Tyler, the Real Slim Shady, as it were, even if the persona has grown to accomodate multiple humans to allow for the growth and development of ZH. Perhaps we can focus on trying to notice the posts that most match the early output in style and temperament?

As for post #40581 -- the solution to this is perhaps multinodal, cellular organization - of contributors, physical infrastructure, etc. I am seeing this already, would be very surprised if the team behind the site hadn't thought of these. By the time ZH can be a big and serious enough target to warrant black helicopters of its own, it should/will by extension have enough adherents to become a real Hydra.

All CNBC reporters should be fired and Zero Hedge should take charge of everything in there.

What do you get if you cross a rabbit with "Pinocchio" ????

-A side shot of Erin Burnett when she's interviewing someone; it's so painful. This girl is all nose and her sense of humor is like a kick in the balls.
