A Politico Exclusive: Getting bin Laden - How The Mission Went Down

Getting Osama bin Laden: How the mission went down

The helicopter
carrying Navy SEALs malfunctioned as it approached Osama bin Laden’s
compound at about 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, stalling as it hovered. The pilot
set it down gently inside the walls, then couldn’t get it going again.

It was a heart-stopping moment for President Barack Obama, who had
been monitoring the raid in the White House Situation Room since 1 p.m.,
surrounded by members of his war cabinet.

“Obviously, everyone was thinking about Black Hawk Down and Desert One,” a senior administration official recalled.

The SEALs disembarked.

“The assault team went ahead and raided the compound, even though
they didn’t know if they would have a ride home,” an official said.

The special forces put bombs on the crippled chopper and blew it up,
then lifted off in a reinforcement craft just before 4:15 p.m., capping
an astounding 40 minutes that gave the United States a tectonic victory
in the 10-year war on terror touched off by 9/11.

The sick chopper turned out to be a tiny wrinkle in an astounding
military and intelligence triumph. Bin Laden was shot in the face by the
SEALs during a firefight after resisting capture.

He was buried at sea less than 12 hours later. He was 54.

Here’s how the world’s most-hunted man was vanquished, as recounted by senior administration officials:

Contrary to the intelligence community’s long-held belief that bin
Laden was in a lawless “no man’s land” on the Pakistani border, bin
Laden had been hiding in a three-story house in a one-acre compound in
Abbottabad, about 35 miles north of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.
Officials describe it as a relatively affluent community, with lots of
residents who are retired military.

“Bin Laden was living in a relatively comfortable place: a compound
valued at about $1 million,” a senior U.S. official told POLITICO. “Many
of his foot soldiers are located in some of the remotest regions of
Pakistan and live in austere conditions. You’ve got to wonder if they’re
rethinking their respect for their dead leader. He obviously wasn’t
living as one of them.”

Officials described the raid as the culmination of years of highly
advanced intelligence work that included the National
Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which specializes in imagery and
maps, and the National Security Agency (NSA), the “codemakers and
codebreakers” who can covertly watch and listen to conversations around
the world.

On June 2, 2009, just over four months into his presidency, Obama had
signed a memo to CIA Director Leon Panetta stating “in order to ensure
that we have expanded every effort, I direct you to provide me within 30
days a detailed operation plan for locating and bringing to justice”
bin Laden.

In the biggest break in a global pursuit of bin Laden that stretched
back to the Clinton administration, the U.S. discovered the compound by
following one of the terrorist’s personal couriers, identified by
terrorist detainees as one of the few al Qaeda couriers who bin Laden
trusted.

“They indicated he might be living
with and protecting bin Laden,” a senior administration official told
reporters on a midnight conference call. “Detainees gave us his nom de
guerre, or his nickname, and identified him as both a protégé of Khalid
Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of September 11th, and a trusted
assistant of Abu Faraj al-Libbi, the former number three of al Qaeda who
was captured in 2005.”

Officials didn’t learn the courier’s name until 2007. Then it took two
years to find him and track him back to this compound, which was
discovered in August 2010.

“It was a “Holy cow!” moment,” an official said.

The compound had been relatively secluded when it was built in 2005 — on
the outskirts of the town center, at the end of a narrow dirt road.

“In the last six years, some residential homes have been built nearby,”
an official said on the call. “The main structure, a three-story
building, has few windows facing the outside of the compound. A terrace
on the third floor … has a seven-foot privacy wall. … [T]he property is
valued at approximately $1 million but has no telephone or Internet
service connected to it.”

Everything about the compound signaled that it was being used to hide someone important.

“It has 12- to 18-foot walls topped with barbed wire,” the official
said. “Internal wall sections — internal walls sectioned off different
portions of the compound to provide extra privacy. Access to the
compound is restricted by two security gates, and the residents of the
compound burn their trash, unlike their neighbors, who put the trash out
for collection.

For all their suspicions, U.S. officials never knew for sure that bin Laden was inside.

The White House’s original plan had been to bomb the house, but Obama ultimately decided against that.

“The helicopter raid was riskier. It was more daring,” an official told
POLITICO. “But he wanted proof. He didn’t want to just leave a pile of
rubble.”

Officials knew there were 22 people living there, and Obama wanted to be
sure not to kill civilians unnecessarily. So he ordered officials to
come up with an air-assault plan.

The SEALs held rehearsals of the raid on April 7 and April 13, with officials monitoring the action from Washington.

As the real thing approached, daily meetings were held of the national
security principals, chaired by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon,
and their deputies, chaired by John Brennan, the president’s
counterterrorism adviser.

Over the past seven weeks, Obama had chaired numerous National Security
Council meetings on the topic, including ones on March 14, March 29,
April 12, April 19 and April 28.

“In the lead up to this operation, the President convened at least 9
meetings with his national security Principals,” a senior administration
official e-mailed reporters. “Principals met formally an additional
five times themselves; and their Deputies met 7 times. This was in
addition to countless briefings on the subject during the President’s
intelligence briefings; and frequent consultations between the [White
House National Security Council], CIA, [Defense Department] and Joint
Staff. The President was actively involved in reviewing all facets of
the operation.”

At an April 19 meeting in the
Situation Room, the president approved the air assault as the course of
action. He ordered the force to fly to the region to conduct it.

Last Thursday, just after his East Room announcement that Panetta would
succeed Robert Gates as Defense Secretary, the president held another
meeting in the Situation Room, and went through everyone’s final
recommendations.

Obama didn’t announce his decision at the meeting, but kept his counsel overnight.

In the White House Diplomatic Room at 8:20 a.m. on Friday, before flying
down to view tornado destruction in Alabama, Obama informed Donilon
that he was authorizing the operation. Also attending the meeting were
Brennan, White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley and Deputy National
Security Adviser Denis McDonough.

Donilon signed a written authorization to Panetta, who commanded the
strike team. Donilon convened a principals’ meeting at 3 p.m. to finish
the planning.

The raid was scheduled for Saturday, the day when Obama and most of the
West Wing was due at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
But weather pushed it to Sunday.

Top West Wing staff worked most of the day on the operation. Senior
national-security officials stayed in the Situation Room beginning at 1
p.m.

The official’s e-mail gave this account of Obama’s day: “2:00pm the
President met with the Principals to review final preparations. … 3:32pm
the President returned to the Sit Room for an additional briefing. …
3:50pm the President first learns that UBL was tentatively identified. …
7:01pm the President learns that there’s a ‘high probability’ the HVT
[high-value target] was [bin Laden]. … 8:30pm the President receives
further briefings.”

In the Situation Room, the president was surrounded by Daley, Donilon,
McDonough, Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Joint Chiefs of
Staff Chairman Mike Mullen, Director of National Intelligence James
Clapper, and others.

Panetta was at CIA headquarters, where he had turned his conference room
into a command center that gave him constant contact with the tactical
leaders of the strike team.

With the team still in the compound, the commander on the ground told a remote commander that they had found bin Laden.

Applause erupted in Washington.

Three other adult males were killed with bin Laden, officials said.

“We believe two were the couriers and the third was bin Laden’s adult
son,” an official said on the call. “There were several women and
children at the compound. One woman was killed when she was used as a
shield by a male combatant. Two other women were injured.”

U.S. forces took photographs of the body, and officials used
facial-recognition technology to compare them with known pictures of bin
Laden.

It was him.

At 11:35 p.m., Obama stepped into the East Room and told the world: “Justice has been done.”

Dr. David Ray Griffin, a former professor at California's Claremont School of Theology and author of numerous books, suggests that bin Laden has been dead for nearly ten years. He argues that bin Laden died on December 13, 2001, of kidney failure or kidney related illness. There are records of bin Laden being treated in an American Hospital in Dubai for urinary infection, often related with kidney disease, and a related order for a mobile dialysis machine, essential to his survival. Griffin along with other doctors that he cites, states that it would be impossible for bin Laden to survive in a cave for an extended period of time with that machine.
It appears to me that Obama, being so low in the polls in his run up for re-election, has pulled this "story" out of a hat to improve his approval ratings. Nothing the US government does surprises me anymore, and I take anything they say with a huge grain of salt.

Speculating, they would have had a staging area close by in a remote place...maybe north of the lake, west of town (go to the map I posted this morning)...uninhabited, only about 2-3 miles outside of town...perfect spot for idling empty choppers if needed.

If so then why the drama in the story about the Seals carrying out the mission with no assurances they would be extracted if they knew other copters were nearby. And Shirley (sorry about that :>) helicopters gathering a few miles outside of town would have drawn interest.

The choppers could come down through the valleys and no one would hear or see them, there are no roads where I'm talking about...again, you need to look at the map.

As for drama, who knows...I ain't buying they dumped him at sea either...more than likely he was given to the Bin Hidin family...I believe their practice is they need to be buried within 24hrs. The cover story also dampens those who would go to grave to praise...or piss on it, as the case may be.

But of course, Shirley, you know by now what my preference is for his final resting place ;-)

Yup...dead as a doornail.  For a very long time.

We've either seen a crass ratings building exercise for a failed President, or a window has opened up in which "proof" of our need for Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, TSA groping and FEMA can be prominently displayed.  Spectacularly displayed.  Undeniably even...

I watched the lead up, the interminable delays prior to the Messiah's announcement on CNN.  The Wolf and all the other blitzers were transparent stage monkeys breathlessly hyping the whole history making, time marking "you'll always remember where you were and what you were doing on the day Bin Laden died..." complete with narrow angle shots of 75 teenagers with military hair cuts gathered in front of the White House, flags a waving long before any official announcement had been made.

One guest expert even went so far as to say this was the "end of terrorism".  The attempt to portray this as a watershed event worthy of wild, unfettered celebration embraced by all Americans was so cheesy it made me want to puke.

That would fit the goal of a ratings pump, and I pray that's all it was.

But it would also fit the goal of attempting to pump the national psyche to heights that would make the fear response following a supposed retaliatory strike that much more effective in stampeding the man on the street into "understanding" how much danger we're all in if we don't just accept continued curtailment of our constitutional freedoms.

Maybe my tinfoil is screwed on too tight.  Dunno.  But, we shouldn't have long to wait.  I imagine that emotional manipulation has a very short half-life and they'll need to lower the boom fairly quickly if some false flag is part of the plan.  The next week or so should tell the tale.

And that's the point, isn't it.

Since the public has been conditioned to believe by way of TV and movies that military operations are conducted in a certain way, they are now described in that way to reinforce all those decades of MSM programming.

Why waste an already brain washed mind?

Mon, 05/02/2011 - 11:54 | 1229972 Cangaroo.TNT
Cangaroo.TNT's picture

First, one should not expect the MSM to get military operational details correct.

On a less critical mission, it is not uncommon for multiple support & reserve aircraft to be available.  They may even be there simply to run interference or for a diversion.  As for "reinforements", it could be a separate team of snipers and medics.  Not necessesarily a full compliment, but in fact reinforcements.

So you have 1 heli with 1 team, a second heli with another team.  Both land and disembark.  There is at least 1 other heli with reinforcements (again, a few medics and snipers), but not fully loaded.  And, you have at least 1 other heli, flying cover and empty except for the crew.  In this case there were probably several helis simply flying cover (you would probably need at least 3 to provide 100% cover), and several others in reserve in a holding patters not more than a few minutes away.  There would be more than enough spare & support resources to extract the entire team, even if both helis were disabled.  That's simply how these things go down.

That's not to say your skepticism is unfounded, but rather misdirected.  I'm not speaking of this operation specifically, but operations in general.

Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:00 | 1230013 Cognitive Dissonance
Cognitive Dissonance's picture

Then why say the Seal team went ahead with the mission without knowing if it would be extracted? While it could easily be a reporter's embellishment it sounds like something the reporter would be told and not make up.

With the focus around the damaged and ultimately destroyed helicopter wouldn't it make sense for the reporter to ask about additional aircraft? In fact he specifically mentioned just one other helicopter. Why not ask about three or four more. Why just one?

  • Hero worship and drama.  Remember when they rescued that female GI in that Iraqi hospital?  Lots of drama in the telling and initial reporting, but afterward, ehhh, not so much drama.
  • Reporters are stupid.
  • They will never reveal all the details, but I imagine they'll provide enough to make the forthcoming movie plausible and exciting.

You are not reading an after-action report.  You're reading a news article.  I don't know about you, but in my experience, even local news stories have factual errors.  You expect a story about a operation of international significance, published within hours of events, written by people with no knowledge of the subject matter, is going to be accurate?  In the not-too-distant future, entire books will be written about this operation that will disagree about certain facts, figures, and details.

Okay, you're a retired cop.  Did you ever bust someone, and read an article about the case or subsequent trial, and discover there were never, ever any factual errors or inconsistiecies?  Was every article 100% correct and accurate?  Using your super-slueth abilities, what do you think happened?  Two teams went in on 2 helis, one crashed.  Then what?  The second team teleported back to base?  Or the team from the downed heli took a cab back?  Or they were left there?  Or, there was 1 team and 2 helis, and one heli was crashed for effect?  Or there were no teams but they decided to crash a heli there for fun?

ZH comments sections are full of complaints about how lousy the MSM is, how poor their coverage is, and how innaccurate their stories are, and now you're suprised that there are inconsistencies?  The newspapers can't even get the box scores right, but this article should have been above reproach.  Awesome reasoning.

I did not say skepticism was unwarranted.  But it should not be directed toward whether or not there was a spare heli to extract the assault teams.  This was not a clandestine operation.  The guys were not going to be dropped off in some remote location and then extracted days or weeks later.  They were going in and out, and there were contingencies.

The tail of the crashed helicopter looks like a Bell UH-1 Iroquois.

Crew: 1-4
Capacity: 3,880 lb - 14 troops
Empty weight: 5,215 lb
Gross weight: 9,040 lb
Max takeoff weight: 9,500 lb

I have no idea how special warfare outfits these things or what air base they operated out of.  If their range was less than 100 miles, then the fuel savings might have helped some.

... they all pile into the second helicopter that's already carrying the reinforcements?

There is an airfield about 35 miles away that the U.S. has been using for quite some time.  The copters were likely launched from there.  I'm sure they had backup craft at that airfield for just such a contingency.  It wouldn't take long for an empty copter to fly 35 miles to pick up the guys when they were finished.  So - probably a single copter initially.  The guys did their job, called for a pickup copter, blew up the disabled copter, and got picked up by the empty rescue copter. Not likely that they wanted to signal their approach  by sending lots of noisy machines together at the same time.

My point was simply that this so called "story' was inconsistent and flawed after just a cursory examination. So its purpose was not to convey 'information' but rather propaganda.

Our glorious soldiers encounter unexpected danger and equipment malfunction during their dangerous mission. They bravely push ahead anyway despite knowing if they will be rescued themselves and fulfill their mission, bringing back the head of that evil boogie man Osama.

You perhaps know by now that the did do a DNA test.  Used DNA from sister who died recently in a hospital in Boston for a confirmation match.  You perhaps also know by now that they shot him in the eye to not mess up the face.  They used facial recognition software to compare dead face with ealier pictures.  The software claimed a match.

-------------------------------------------

You remember how one of the Greek Dictators (they called them “tyrants” then) sent an envoy to another Dictator to ask his advice about the principles of government. The second Dictator led the envoy into a field of grain, and there he snicked off with his cane the top of every stalk that rose an inch or so above the general level. The moral was plain. Allow no preeminence among your subjects. Let no man live who is wiser or better or more famous or even handsomer than the mass. Cut them all down to a level: all slaves, all ciphers, all nobodies. All equals. Thus Tyrants could practise, in a sense, “democracy.” But now “democracy” can do the same work without any tyranny other than her own. No one need now go through the field with a cane. The little stalks will now of themselves bite the tops off the big ones. The big ones are beginning to bite off their own in their desire to Be Like Stalks.

Not sure, but if they were expecting the targets to be wearing explosives, it makes sense to shoot for the head.  The British SAS train that way for their hostage rescue missions, SEALs, too, probably.  Instant incapacitation in close quarters.

As far as the dumping at sea part goes, how the fuck should I know?  It makes no sense at all why they would do that.

For anyone who cares. This appeared in the paper here.

http://www.blick.ch/news/ausland/bild-von-totem-osama-ist-eine-faelschun...

And for those that can't read it.

Two Pakistani television channels this morning showed a picture of Osama'scorpse. As well as Pakistani security forces were involved in the operation inAbbottabad, the picture might well can somehow find its way into the net.

But the picture is obviously a montage of two photos. Government officials havecompared to NBC News already confirmed that this is a fake, writes MSNBC.

Thus the picture circulating on the internet since 2010 - for example on this page. The first image of Osama Bin Laden is from Reuters - flipped horizontally, it wasfor the photo montage. The second picture shows a male corpse.

Photoshop by the beard and the mouth of Osama Bin Laden on the face of the unknown body was moved. Clearly visible is the falsification of the different skincolor of the two men as well as the uncertainty around the eye area.

Meanwhile, Pakistani broadcaster is granted, "Geo TV" also to be set against aforgery. After the error noticed during an inspection, the picture had been withdrawn.

White House still undecided

The U.S. government according to CNN has not yet decided whether to publishphotographs of dead terrorist masters. Was on the pictures to see that Bin Ladenhad suffered a gunshot wound to the head, so the station. He was easily identifiable on the scans.

The government has initiated a DNA test. Its outcome is certain soon. The photoevidence is so clear, however, that this would not have been necessary, as aCNN correspondent. (num)

Why did he not make any credible videos or statements in years?  There is no way given his character that he'd just hide out in a Mansion's basement for several years and not make a peep about his cause.  This whole thing is fishy.  I'll bet he was aleady dead but unconfirmed and now they probably just killed his son or some lookalike and are using it as smoke and mirrors.  What the hell, the markets needed a boost today.

Already, Exhibit A Is Out the Window –and Into the Sea

Posted by David Kramer on May 2, 2011 05:42 AM

The LRC Blog -- The New York Times is reporting that Osama bin Laden’s body has been buried at sea. Huh????? Didn’t the U.S. government want to have plenty of pictures to show the sheeple of the world that, this time, bin Laden really, really, really is dead?

This brings back memories of how the government destroyed the Oklahoma City bombing debris, i.e., evidence. (Did the defense ever get a chance to send their experts to the debris site to determine what happened? Nah.)

Emmanuel Goldstein bin Laden - Posted by David Kramer on May 1, 2011 09:33 PM

The LRC Blog -- Now that the “leader” is dead, this is great news because the global terrorism network will fall apart and the U.S. government can immediately end all of its criminal actions wars in Asia, disband the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration, the pornoscanners, the…

None of the above is going to happen. You and I both know it. The entire Osama bin Laden/global terrorism scam is just another One World Government crowd creation financed by the OWG Banksters and carried out by the OWG crowd’s private enforcement arm (the CIA-Mossad-M5) to put more and more controls on the sheeple of the world to bring about a One World Government in order to “protect” us from these “global” terrorists.

As the forever war on “terror” continues even though the “leader” has been destroyed, we’ll see who the next ‘Emmanuel Goldstein’* will be. Unfortunately, this time I think that the OWG crowd will go after a real threat to the State—perhaps even someone like Lew Rockwell. I’ve always considered Lew and his spearheading of the dissemination of information on Austrian economics and a private law society the number one threat to the One World Government crowd (and a threat to the institution of government in general).

Emmanuel Goldstein’ was a “bogeyman” that was set up by the State in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four to brainwash the sheeple into fearing a common “enemy” to hate (and, of course, be protected from by the State).

And the reason for the million dollar mansion psychological operation...

“Bin Laden was living in a relatively comfortable place: a compound valued at about $1 million,” a senior U.S. official told POLITICO. “Many of his foot soldiers are located in some of the remotest regions of Pakistan and live in austere conditions. You’ve got to wonder if they’re rethinking their respect for their dead leader. He obviously wasn’t living as one of them.”

...undermine the morale of those that heart OBL whilst hating on your freedumbs.

What to do for an encore?

1.  Find Hitler's body

2.  Revitalize Hitler

3.  Have the actual Hitler do some "Downfall" videos on YouTube.  Display subtitle "This is the actual Hitler" to avoid confusion.

4.  Buy Hitler a mansion in Beverly Hills

5.  Have SEALS storm mansion and kill Hitler

6.  Bury Hitler at sea.

7.  Obama holds news conference: "I saved the world from Hitler"
