Presenting The Survivalist's Dream Desktop

Little commentary needed here, although why anyone would be on Yahoo is beyond us. If one can afford anti-aircraft artillery one would assume that at least a Bloomberg terminal should be up and running... which is probably the same reason why the Fed's POMO desk is also Bloomberg-less.

I used to work in a Farady cage when I was helping design EPIRB's for boats. Every once in a while an EPIRB would go off and the coast guard would stop by to alert us. This is the one I worked on - 100% made in AMERICA:

in most urban locals... to discharge a class 3 device... thump gun.. or better, you have to pay to be supervised.

if you are Palin's nieghbor and can open carry a sliencer in your state, then you live in BFE and maybe you dont need to be supervised.

There is a solid school of thought for the post Peak world that guns are for shooting your wy OUT of a situation enroute to somewhere invisible.

They are not to be held in large quantity to defend anything because they make noise and the families fleeing the cities trying to feed their kids will gravitate to that noise and overrun the occupant and the stored MREs will then feed their kids instead of the owner's.

Really?

You would take your family and gravitate towards the sound of gunfire?

What are you going to use to overrun that position, your children?

That makes no sense.

The sound of gunfire is a warning, not a dinner bell.

One survivalist versus 50 town citizens. If just a few of the citizens have cheap-ass hunting rifles that they've been shooting regularly, the survivalist loses. Guaranteed.

Plus, the normal law-abiding citizens would want to get rid of this wackaloon the minute order breaks down - it's too dangerous to keep a looney like this in your midst when you've got outside threats to worry about.

If your kids are starving and you're looking for food, and you hear gunfire, then someone got a deer.  If you hear more gunfire, then someone got the deer getter and now has his deer.  That's a dinner bell.

There is also the reality that it's 1500 and more families with kids looking.  So, yeah, maybe you don't take your kids to the party.  You walk them in that direction, park them behind a tree, and then join the other 1499 who overrun the position to get that storage.  What you do NOT do is stay away and watch your kids starve.

Having a mindset that you will man the ramparts and loudly/defiantly defend your stash just gets your stash stolen, most likely while you're asleep.  And you can also dispense with the armed community concept who chow down on roast venison, wafting that smell far and wide.  That just attracts a bigger crowd, who take a minor detour to get some heavy equipment from the local national guard armory.

Guns are to shoot your way OUT to get to a stash you hid and kept quiet about and do not intend to defend.    You stay away from humans.  Let winter be your guns.

Basic point I'm making is that in a true survival or disaster situation, the lone gun-nut is the first one to die. And the community will band together to get rid of him if they feel at all threatened by him. And 1 always loses against any number greater than, say, 10. And the group always knows that.

If you want to survive the apocalypse, get trained in advanced first-aid, midwifery, shoe repair, small engine repair, or something else that the community will need. You'll be protected and respected.

if I may...

Those guns could be used to arm others...

thusly helping to feed other families... protecting others families... serving a purpose.

or they could all be plastic?

most that I speak to, in the real world.. that have a stash would go hungry to feed a child and go without a gun... give thier only gun away... becuase they can take a gun from someone else later as needed.

so, I say bullshit to this fucking live in the ice bullshit... I say bullshit to anyone who would not feed any child before themselves... and i say bullshit that anyone with that many guns would not happily share with the needy.

@Meatier.

If your kids were starving and crying, you WOULD run towards the sound of any savior, including gunshots.  A man shooting is a man with something valuable to protect.

Once there, you, if half-brained, would then stand back and assess the situation.

Those over-testosteroned idiots that are shooting all over the place will be where the crowds hang.

Meanwhile, on my little ranch, I'll be in my batcave only to come out at night with my crossbow or slingshot to take out food.  The only way somebody will get shot is if I have zero other options and my daughter's life is in the balance.

Have survival and zombie movies taught you nothing?

We are in agreement that laying low and being quiet like you say is the best option for long term survival.

In such a situation there would be an abundant supply of food available to scrounge without facing an armed opponent defending it.

However, the fool firing the gun and giving away their position will just attract more fools looking for a confrontation. That is no place I want my family to be near. Ever.

A MS Windows desktop???  I don't think so.  Survivalists typically would want to use Linux, or something that is free, easily modified, etc., as the circumstances may dictate.  Not Bill Gates' stuff that is vulnerable to a whole host of viruses, and probably even has security backdoors.

I would bet big money, that this is a Japanese 20-something's livingroom in downtown Tokyo, all 10'x10' of it, and they are all airsoft and/or inert historical pieces. Nice system though...

Sounds right.  There is exactly one mag in each toy.  There are no extra mags, no slings, no ammo boxes or ammo of any kind.  The barret on the top would weight 30 pounds on that flimsy metal shelf.  Definitely airsoft for show.  That guy would freak out if there was a grimy real gun dripping oil on the white carpet.

FWIW, an M82a1 is like 40lbs, so its doubtful that it would just hang on the wall that way. I sure wouldn't want one to fall off the wall and onto my computing rig.

Faraday cage isn't good enough. A microwave-frequency EMP burst can couple right through any gap around 1cm in size. And yes, the government knows how to build them - look up "flux compression generator" and you can find a write-up on how to build them, on a .mil website no less.

Backup generator is probably not much use, either - you eventually run out of diesel, and the noise the thing makes will attract too many zombies/aliens/lizard people/black helicopters. It's better to use a solar panel feeding a UPS.

But this guy's got far too much current draw anyway. Look at all that whitespace on the margins of his monitor! That costs amps, you know. Waste is not survivalism. A survivalist would run an ASUS, or even better, an XO. Less power the better.

I'd like to see his wireless card, btw. If he's not got an Alfa card with a +20dB Yagi, how's he supposed to get intarwebz when ObamaSatan flips the internet kill switch and he gets disconnected from his cable provider?

And he's running Internet Exploder, which means he's not running Linux, which means Microsoft can flip their own killswitch and his computer will be bricked. Or the government can release their own Windows-based kill-all-survivalists virus so that the next time he goes to the RantMedia or Alex Jones website or whatever the feck survivalist silliness he's into, he picks up the payload and again his computer gets bricked. They're targeting Iranian nuclear reactors, why not fat basement-dwelling freedom-fighter wannabes?

And his computer's not mobile. Again, screwup. There's no point having a computer if you have to permanently ditch it the moment the zombies/aliens/satanists/international Jewish banking cabal attack your house. An ultramobile running Linux with a solar panel and an Alfa card & antenna is like 2-3 pounds, and fits in a side pocket of an Alice pack. It takes up the space of 1 single MRE. Look into it.

Plus, nobody needs 50 frickin' guns. At most you need three. It's the ammo that you need lots of. But even then, you're hauling too much iron when you have to go on the move.

This guy's not a survivalist, he's just attempting to use a technology collection to compensate for a bad case of micropenis.

Why not barter other, lighter, less bulky things with more value that can't be then used to kill you?

If he's going to stay in one place and stockpile, it'd be better to have a large assortment of durable footwear. Serious, after 3 months, people will be begging for a decent warm pair of boots that repel water and and don't cause trenchfoot or bleeding sores.

The guys who hoard silver will be ambling around on bleeding stumps because they lost their feet to foot fungus. That's going to be funny.

Maybe some electrical solder would be good to stockpile too. A couple how-to books on small engine repair. A few high-school and university level textbooks on math and science for the home-schoolers who finally realize in the apocalyptic aftermath that the Bible isn't sufficient study material for their children.

Wow Death, a man of my dreams.

The FIRST place I'm "borrowing" from is the public library.  It will provide me four things.

Books to learn things I need to know, toilet paper, a heat/fire source and of course, something to pass the long hours I won't be able to do anything else.

As for survival gear made for barter, all you men are discounting a very real fact of life.

Tampons are going to be as good as gold, or at least as good as a buck to exchange for food.

guns are tools..

you dont use a mini screwdriver as a hammer...

pistol for carry...

shotgun for the house...

riffle for hunting...

this everyone should have... now if you would like to have some extra... by all means!

No, it's pistol when I can't carry my rifle. Rifle for everything else. Over-penetration is the worry of the untrained and ill-prepared.

I agree about guns as tools, but nobody with any sense will be carrying around more than two firearms. Plan on leaving the shotty behind - or just sell it for more ammo, or training, or put it in your trunk in a sock, or in a 55-gallon barrel with other Plan X items (water purifier, dehydrated food, tent, sleeping bag, etc.) for worst-case scenarios. Only fools or truly desperate will be out hunting for the 10-12 daily squirrels with their .22 in the calorie deficit game.

Collateral damage from over-penetration is a real issue. You shoot your gun off in your house, and it goes through your wall and mine and hits my daughter, I will cut your throat with a hacksaw.

Uh, any firearm. Not just the big ones. I understand the force behind your post. When a firearm is discharged in a non-combat environment the entire community better stand up in an interested manner.

Shotguns are like any firearm: there will always be a degree of collateral damage. Choice of caliber/platform is of lesser concern in regards to training and determination.

Give all the methheads shotguns loaded with birdshot and view community safety!

The life of your daughter is an extremely valuable resource; hence, training and rational determination. The early passing of human life is always unfortunate.
