Putin Blasts "Defective And Flawed" Libyan Air Strikes, Compares Them To An "Oil Crusade", Cautions US Against Interference In Other Countries' Affairs

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday it was the Arab League... today it is the country which arguably has the biggest oil reserves in the world - Russia. And they both are very pissed at what is increasingly seen by the word as an unholy oil crusade, headed by Sarkozy, but with the US and UK not far behind. Per Reuters, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Monday likened the U.N. Security Council resolution supporting military action in Libya to medieval calls for crusades. Well, when your gasoline is $9/gallon a crusade surely sounds like the politically responsible thing to do. Especially if in the process one can get on the Nobe peace prize nominations list.

From Reuters:

Putin, in the first major remarks from a Russian leader since a coalition of Western countries began air strikes in Libya, said that Muammar Gaddafi's government fell short of democracy but added that did not justify military intervention.

"The resolution is defective and flawed," Putin told workers at a Russian ballistic missile factory. "It allows everything. It resembles medieval calls for crusades."

Putin said that interference in other countries' internal affairs has become a trend in U.S. foreign policy and that the events in Libya indicated that Russia should strengthen its own defence capabilities.

Russia, a veto-wielding permanent Security Council member, abstained from the vote on Thursday in which the council authorised a no-fly zone over Libya and "all necessary measures" to protect civilians against Gaddafi's forces.

Well, there's talk, and there's action. If Putin believes it is time to switch those at the top of global hegemony, nothing prevents him from finally announcing, in collaboration with China and Germany of course, that the new currency backed by commodities and precious metals, as everyone by now knows is in the making, is finally being floated. That should promptly resolve all concerns of crusades and interference.

it kind of funny.

In one way i agree with Putin, it a bad resolution, fighting a stupid war we don't need to fight.

the problem is this remark came form Putin, who has had no problem of throwing his weight around, invading and intimidating neighboring states.

Expect more of this as awareness that there is only 1 party and the elites must do anything to prevent those who are not captured from entering office.

Please everybody:

When the US (or its allies) do it, it ‘s just “collateral damage”.

Only when the US (or its allies) use their planes, missiles, tanks, and well-armed troops against poorly equipped insurgents with non-existent air defenses is it to be deemed “war”.

When others do it, it is repression, subjugation, and massacre.

It is only natural for the humanitarian impulse to be most aroused when one’s oil, I mean "vital interests" are at stake.

This is just so rad. People manage to scream "Down with Bernanke!" and "America, Fuck Yeah!" in the same breath and don't seem to have a problem about that. Yea, let's have another Iraq, so what. And we don't need no lecturing about how we police the world! Fuck yeah!

Dumbwits on the parade.

I don't see people doing that. All I see are people calling out Putin for his two faced posturing. I really don't see how you can suggest otherwise unless you honestly believe Putin means what he says which of course would be idiotic since he could have used his veto power in the UN.

What does that have to do with the fact that Putin is publicly denouncing the No Fly zone and privately supporting it for his own interests?! I honestly see very few here actually supporting the No Fly zone.

Youre looking at it thru a 'Twitter' microcosm, the Russians have been saying 'We will bury you, we will take you over from within, we will let you hang yourselves with the rope of your own manufacture', while people only have a short attention span and cant see their promises are almost complete.

'Speech in the UN'? Who gives a shit? Seen the US debt total lately?

The world will unfold as it should.  Your ranting will simply drive the undecided into the arms of the moral right.  Is that what you want?

Let's see, at $100 Million per week, the cost of this no-fly zone is not exactly cheap [just where is the money coming from, besides taxpayers?], so if Gaddafi does not stupidly try to engage the Western coalition and just remains a mobile "thorn in their side" - who exactly is winning?  The Iraq war was supposed to cost $60 billion max and be paid by oil revenues, remember that one? [Iraq may be selling oil, but every con man is in on the game and by the time Uncle Sam gets to the front of the line, it's ALL gone - surprising, isn't it?].  So, withdraw the army, let'em view Bay Watch and show up only now and then to keep the $100 million going into the toilet - this is "war for dummies."

On other news, Gaddafi's flying compound was shot down.
And as resolution 1973 clearly limits the use of power to aereal vehicles, watch as each and every home in Libya is bombed, as they are now considered hangars for those pesky flying carpets.

Now Medvedev is publicly going against Vladimir.  And making Russia's UN vote quite clear.  Interesting.  A little while ago Medvedev also scolded Vladimir when Vladimir pronouced a criminal case "solved" before the court case even started.

Medvedev swiftly rejected the comments in a rare moment of discord.

"Under no circumstances is it acceptable to use expressions which essentially lead to a clash of civilizations, such as 'crusade' and so on," Medvedev was quoted as saying. "It is unacceptable. Otherwise, everything may end up much worse compared to what's going on now. Everyone should remember that."

Medvedev added, "Russia did not exercise [the veto power] for one reason: I do not consider this resolution to be wrong. Moreover, I believe that this resolution generally reflects our understanding of what is going on in Libya."

Putin was able to use the U.S. as a fall guy again by knowing the U.S. would make and take the hit.

Putin is one of the sharpest knives in the drawer. He knows exactly what he is doing.  He knew what the program was going to be before the vote, of the pretense that France was leading the coaliton. He knew that the truth would catch up with the U.S.’s tarnished reputation - that the operation would be impossible without the United States; he knew that a veto or an abstain wouldn't matter, that it was going to happen one way or another anyway.  So he was able to darken further the war-mongering image that’s grown up so strongly in the world around the U.S., tying the U.S. down like Gulliver with all these strings.

Putin knew that the U.S would get the short straw.
