Radiation In Ibaraki Rises To 300 Times Normal As Fukushima Evacuated, DOCOMO To Limit Up To 80% Of Voice Calls In Chiba, Ibaraki, 50% In Tokyo

Tyler Durden's picture

A choppy futures session has seen some modest profit-taking in line with Nikkei trading, following news that all TEPKO personnel around Fukushima are to be evacuated due to abnormally high radiation levels. Keep an eye on the Japanese market for an indication of where we open tomorrow.A somewhat bigger problem is that according to Bloomberg, which has now caught up to our radiation reporting by prefecture, the radiation in Ibaraki has reached 15,800 nanosieverts/hour at 11:40 am, which is 300 times normal. The spin: this is one third the amount of radiation in a chest X-ray. What is not mentioned is that an X-ray is exposure measured in one instant, whereas in this case the irradiation goes on for hour, after hour, after hour. And some other unpleasant news: NTT DOCOMO has announced it will limit up to 80% of voice calls in neighboring Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, and up to 50% in Tokyo. Whether this is to conserves some mystical telephonic energy or to prevent the spread of panic is unclear. As this latest news is digested watch for the drift.

This is how futures looked like at last check:

And here is a handy summary of the Japanese crisis so far from Reuters:

Would you want a car or computer that's setting off a geiger counter?

Or would this NEVER be an issue? Is this crazy talk?

Most made in China now.

Japan moved into overpriced labor starting 20 years ago, thus the rise of slave labor in China.

Japan then moved up the food chain to research and engineering, high end food crops, speculation, circa U.S. 1971.

Invest in Japanese financial engineering firms - as 'Gordon Geko V 2.O Japan' is now operational.

Not entirely true. Most are assembled, not made, in China. On the other hand, they still make high-end stuff at home. For example, Nikon still makes its high-end DSLRs and lenses in its Sendai Facility

You are correct about that part.  As mentioned here a few days ago, Japan learned early that manufacturing in China resulted in massive losses from intellectual property infringement and brought the really hi-tech stuff home.  So what do you expect to happen in general when they cannot deliver those high-end DSLRs for about 12 months and the Japanese insurance companies are selling all their US government bonds to raise money to pay their claims?  Not to mention their business interruption insurance?  And then everyone else there is in the same boat?  What will this do to USD/JPY?  What will it do to USM11?  Hint....you should have thought of this last Friday when your jaw hit your desk.  Sure wish I had.  It happened to USD/JPY Wednesday after the close.  The bernank overruled a cancelled POMO to try to keep USM11 in the upper end of its range.  Wonder how long that will work?

I talked about this today in a class of Junior College students.  I spent five minutes talking about the nuclear reactors in Fukushima, showed a video about the specific problems (maps, illiustrations, explanations).

A young woman raised her hand and asked "So what does all this nuclear stuff mean anyways?"

God bless her for asking - but holy shit.

WE ARE DOOMED.

I don't know, maybe the dumb ones help us move forward (?).

99% were wrapped in their blankies, hitting the iPod and Facebook to sooth any dissonance.

I'd say 10% really got it, and these were Juniors in college and 5% were over 30.  The funny thing is the over 30's got it, they knew exactly what I was talking about.  I don't know if it was age or generational; I really don't.

However, far too many just did not grasp the effect on their lives, no grasp.

Good kids, good intentions - just buried in mental fudge and marshmallow and corn syrup.

Hey, so I haven't lived in an English speaking country for a while now, so no constant TV and radio for about 10 years.  I watch the markets for a heads up on something important happening like an alien invasion or a cure for cancer, generally a pretty good system to damp the noise away from the signal.

But I gotta say, the last couple of years has been harsh because the markets aren't really a good reporting system anymore; strange stuff happens in the world where we might expect a powerful response, but nothing much happens.  It's been like a football stadium filled with folks who don't realize the game has started.  This last week takes the cake - the market elbow bone is not connected to anything anymore, its surreal.

No, it's like a football stadium were the home team keeps conceding goals, but the score on the screen shows they are winning and there's a group of cheerleaders at the front are cheering the team and shouting "we're number one". Some of the crowd realize what's going on and start saying, "but we are losing," so they move more cheerleaders around them to shout them out.

The rest of the crowd doesn't know what to make of it, so bury their head in their hotdogs and say, "I don't really understand what's happening, but it is a good show."

I agree that most people don't understand the nature of the debt-money system, and the value of a counter-party free money. But I think the situation is designed to fail. She works for a mega-corporation. She wouldn't get to keep the gold coin, so what's in it for her to take a risk? She'd rather have the FRN's because that keeps her job. Not one more nut job at the window. But she could tell it was worth something.

In the name of scientific progress, the Japanese people are now threatened with the worst kind of death: Death by radiation poisoning -- a slow, suffering breakdown of cellular function at every level. And sadly, Japan has already suffered through a similar scenario near the end of World War II when the United States of America dropped atomic bombs on the civilian Japanese population... twice!

Without a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami these were plugging along causing a lot less damage than coal fired electricity plants.

Shit happens.

Shit happens precisely when humanity doesn't think it will.

Murphy's law.

Shit happens, despite your best efforts.

Build a solar power plant in every major metropolis and the magnetic poles will reverse and the axis of the Earth will tilt so you have to re-alighn every friggin' panel.

What else is new?

These fuckers were lying about 5 and 6 !!!

In another development at the Fukushima plant, it said operators had been planning to use a diesel generator to supply water to the No. 5 reactor unit after levels there fell on Tuesday, although they remained above the fuel.

Covering nuclear fuel with water is normally needed to prevent it from overheating. The IAEA earlier said the No. 5 and No. 6 reactors were shut down at the time of the massive earthquake, but they were loaded with fuel.

is that spent fuel or fresh fuel ?

The IAEA said the water level decreased by 40 cm (15.7 in) to 201 cm above the fuel in the five hours to 1200 GMT on March 15.

Radioactivity forecast system down

A computer system that forecasts the spread of radioactivity has not been working due to malfunctioning monitoring posts around a troubled nuclear power plant in quake-hit Fukushima Prefecture.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says it does not know when the system will be back in operation.

Jeez, you are heartless, like you expect honesty and transparency?

OMFG

Yeah, when the riots in L.A. are out of control and Commercial REITS will collapse it will take five days for news reports to reach the MSM so transactions can be made.

Our Main Stream Media absolutely bites, is worthless, sucks, pointless, 20 years of J Comm graduates thrown into the ovens.  Holy hell, do they know it?

Believe nothing but your gut.

EU calls for nuclear stress testing

http://www.boston.com/news/world/europe/articles/2011/03/16/eu_calls_for...

Do they really have to call it that? Lends credibility to the sham bank stress tests.  Or vice versa.

Is this a case of a $2 journalist who can't think of anything else (and actually believed in the bank stress tests), or are they really trying to link these two together for the previous' benefit?

Does any journalist who uses 'stress tests' as a way to describe anything meant to be credible, lose said credibility by not realizing the farce that the original stress tests were made of?  Yes.

Please review all nuke plants, but don't call them stress tests.

Also, regarding the economic breakdown, (I didn't see it posted by anyone), but it is from 3/11 when all hell broke loose.

Michigan bill would impose "financial martial law"

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20042299-503544.html

Under the legislation, the Michigan Messenger reports, the governor could declare a "financial emergency" in towns or school districts. He could then appoint a manager to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, eliminate services - and even eliminate whole cities or school districts without any public input.

If the above isn't blatant 'taking it right in front of your face' fascism, then Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire didn't take steroids. (all of it deserved to be bolded, but NO IDEOLOGICAL SIDE should allow the bolded)

Does the fascist idiot know he'll be appointing someone with more power than their governorship?  An unelected official.  (If the unelected official can fire elected officials, who can fire the unelected official?  Who is really in charge.  The unelected banksters)

Apologize if someone already posted it.  Went back from 3-10 to 3-13, didn't see anything from TD on it (of course someone might have posted it in a comment I missed)

Just heard on Al-jazeera, that they are dropping water from helicopters on the reactors.

But, based on what we have been told till now, the containment vessel is completely and  hermetically sealed. I wonder how dropping water on them will work.

I am just hoping that this water-drop is only meant for the SFPs that are on the top levels of these reactors.

If not, then we have a really fucked-up situation.

They may be limiting voice calls so they don't get any interference with possible remote control of the plant. It doesn't matter though cause ALL bets are off for Japan. Half the country could be uninhabitable unless a miracle happens. Why in Gods name do you build a Massive nuclear plant on a fault line on a coast where tsunamis are known to have occurred in the past?

Perhaps a modeler or a statistician will chime in here, but I never quite know how one comes up with a disaster scenario distribution in a facility scheduled for a forty year life but for which the historical database of the technology is less than a decade old, and for which there is no easy proxy.  My guess is they use the theorem developed by that famous Lithuanian mathematician Pulit Outamias, but again, I'm no expert.

Just as an assumption :

We're looking more and more at a worse case scenario now becoming possible. What will the weather do to the the fall out when this blows sky high? Which parts of Japan and of the world are in for a mega hard time. Anybody have any ideas on that? East-west-north-south. It's going to twirl and swirl until it all comes down somewhere...everywhere... Let's see if people here can imagine what that could mean. I'm no expert on this.
