Radiation Level At Fukushima Reactor No. 2 At Its Highest Level Recorded So Far, Neutron Beam Observed 13 Times
Per the Japan Nuclear Agency: the Radiation level at Fukushima reactor No. 2 at its highest level recorded so far. From Reuters: "Radiation at the crippled Fukushima No.2 nuclear reactor was recorded at the highest level since the start of the crisis, Japan's nuclear safety agency said on Wednesday. An agency spokesman said 500 millisieverts per hour of radiation was measured at the No.2 unit on Wednesday. Engineers have been trying to fix the plant's cooling system after restoring lighting on Tuesday." And some more truthy news from Kyodo:
Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a
kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11
quake-tsunami disaster.
TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam
measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant's No. 1 and 2
reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02
microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.
The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.
In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant
run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart
continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron
beams.
In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.
But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and
plutonium leaked from the plant's nuclear reactors and spent nuclear
fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear
fission.

If Ann believes radiation is good for you, why don't she take this opportunity to move her sorry azz to downtown Tokyo?...No doubt she can now get a real deal on real estate.
I am ambivalent about Ann Coulter and I don't know what her position on radiation being good for us is. What I do know is that there is a significant number of health physics professsionals who believe that radiation in small amounts stimulates the body's defensive mechanisms just as exposure to viruses and bacteria does. Therefore, a conclusion that small amounts are actually good for you. Everyone is exposed to naturally-occurring radiation every day. Some more that others due to their geographical location and/or time spent in structures that contain relatively high amounts of radiation-emitting materials such as granite.
Sure, that radiation is called sunlight, and it promote the bodies production of Vitamin D. Being pelted with ionizing radiation causes tissue damage. You can set up a health tourism trip to Fukushima. See how that goes for you.

Still no numbers, though, at least not yet. I'm wondering just how severe the radiation is in the immediate vicinity where the firefighters are (or were) working. If it stays high or gets higher, they might not be able to get back close enough to continue their efforts.
Hoping a downward spiral of that nature does not ensue.
Friggen neutron beams...now I have heard everything!
Neutron beams...
Wikipedia: "Due to the high kinetic energy of neutrons, this radiation is considered to be the most severe and dangerous radiation available."
Free neutrons are captured by all sorts of other atoms, and frequently create additional radionuclides.
Containment vessel breached (cracked?). fission product of Uranium and/or Plutonium coming out. The candle is lit people.
Google "neutron beam". Lots of articles about university research labs using neutron beams to do things like take pictures of plastic pistols inside lead boxes and stuff. Can use neutron beams like xrays - except neutron beams can penetrate stuff that xrays can't.
A neutron beam?
That's bullish right? DOW +500 points.
Seriously bullish news
so what of that 1999 disaster??? just now talking about those beams?? Hitachi will surely say all these beams belong to them

The Tokoyo water supply is not too dangerous for infants. Parents advised to use bottled water...which means it's too dangerous for pregnant women and all children.
And whence does the bottled water come...?
good question....
13 million people...
(8) 12 oz bottles a day conservatively.....drink,cook,bathe,wash clothes
so like 100 million bottles a day
better question is what are you gonna do with all the empty bottles...
or is that the reactor endgame....bury reactor in plastic bottles that last for thousands of years in the environment
I heard in one community outside of Tokoyo (proper) the stores ran out of bottled water 20 min. after the announcement was made.
The beam of neutrons is obtained by drilling a hole in the side of a nuclear reactor. The energetic neutrons created in nuclear fission escape through the hole.
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/410964/neutron-beam
Well I guess that means the containment vessel has been breached, right?
Or someone with a Black & Decker cordless tried to relieve the pressure within the reactor by way of some armature dental work on unit 2.
just a bit of spring cleaning... airing out the fission?
Well, it is the only unit that didn't explode.........a lot.
And didn't unit two have a problem with a stuck pressure relief valve at some point? We really have no idea what's going on and neither do "they". Based upon the direct quotes from "officials" there is a lot of half ass guessing going on over there.
With tongue just slightly in cheek, maybe it's time to bring in a clairvoyant or even a nuclear pressure vessel palm reader to give us a better view of the situation on the ground.
Wasn't there something about the Rx #2 suppression pool - a few days ago now - maybe involving an explosion down there, after which, there were concerns about it's integrity?
Yes. We were told there were several loud bangs and they thought maybe it was the torus.
maybe it's time to bring in a clairvoyant or even a nuclear pressure vessel palm reader...

Only a Vulcan could withstand the radiation long enough to get the mains back online and escape....
Neutrons also degrade materials; bombardment of materials with neutrons creates collision cascades that can produce point defects and dislocations in the materials. At high neutron fluences this can lead to embrittlement of metals and other materials, and to swelling of some of them. This poses a problem for nuclear reactor vessels, and significantly limits their lifetime (which can be somewhat prolonged by controlled annealing of the vessel, reducing the number of the built-up dislocations).
I thought nobody ever deployed a N-Bomb. Well, Japan is first. Again.....
Nah, Kramer dropped the N-bomb and it was a disaster.
pods
And, remember the interview with the guy who worked on the #4 reactor vessel for Hitachi, and said that it was badly damaged during the kilning process to smooth out the dislocations from the welding process. If this vessel were possibly flawed in the same way, the dislocations will pile up faster than you can say "I need SPF 1,000,000!"
Anything like a blue dart?
Hole in the side of the reactor, and the SCRAM apparently wasn't 100% successful. Oy veh.
Repel? My memo says it summons them!
Apparently neutron beams are normally produced by drilling a hole in a nuclear reactor. In this case the holes weren't drilled but happened "naturally".
Destabilizes non-radioactive isotopes in the general area making pretty much everything in its path radioactive (for some number of half-lives).
Eventually the neutrons are captured, forming (potentially radioactive) isotopes in the materials irradiated by the 'beam'.

Neutron beams...
...smells like a mass->energy fail.
I'm now wondering what could be worse - a short, sharp criticality event, followed by concrete etc., or a long, drawn out intermittent neutron beam & radioactive smoke party which nothing living can approach for unknown spans of time....

Perhaps "neutron Fukushima glows" as in so very proud of herself and her newly born offspring.
Just a thought.
You make a good point. Some would argue that 'smiles' when properly pronounced is 2 syllables anyway.
How about 'beams'? As in a beaming smile and double entendre as well?

Our american lexicon is partially informed by the blues and black culture. Hence, many of us pronounce the word 'smiles' as something more approximating the word 'smalls'.

Yeah, sorry guys, that might have been the curry...
"kind of radioactive ray"
"Ray" is a bit of a misnomer. A neutron is a particle - an item with mass and energy, whereas "ray" is a term more suited for gamma radiation (photon), a bundle of energy with no mass. The term "beam" is appropriate as it describes a stream of particles, as in an electron beam (used in CRT's).
"But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant's nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission."
This is a plausible explanation, as is the fact that many radioactive isotopes also undergo neutron emission decay. Such materials are used for source neutrons to start a totally new fuel load and to provide baseline indication on reactor power instrumentation. It all depends on the duration, strength and energy levels of the neutron beams they detected. Another misstatement is that the fuel had to be leaked in order for the neutrons to be detected. That is not the case. Fissions occurring within intact fuel cladding will emit detectable neutrons. What this could be indicative is that they are penetrating the bio-shield portion of the primary containment. That is a not-so-good scenario.
I am not trying to downplay the seriousness of this situation, but a lot of speculation and a dearth of facts can lead to needless panic.
Of course, panic helps sell in some cases. Look how empty store shelves get when there is a threat of severe weather.
For a minute I thought I was a lone voice of reason and an understanding of physics. Great post!
I was trying to talk sanity yesterday, and quite a few people didn't want to hear it:
http://freedomofoceania.blogspot.com/
Apparently you cannot have an alternate view here without being junked. A lot of these folks here need to be convinced that their own vision of ultimate doom is the only true one.
OK, let's try a new tack here, and see if it collects as many junks...
Those neutrons are probably going to go airborne and float around the earth and poison all humans and lead to toxic deposits everywhere (wormwood). The new oil spill in the GOM will probably react with these energetic neutrons and burst into flames. It is just as written in Revelations. The end is not near, it is here... and now.
Just stick to the facts.
Pray that the end comes neatly and quickly, like in revelations.
Just as an thought excercise, imagine the best case and worst case for how soon this neutron prolapse will be cool. 4 weeks? Now imagine the worst case 1 year? Look at what has accumulated in only two weeks.
soil in a nearby village is 500mSv/hr. get up into the 2-5 Sv/hr range and you've got what's known as a "dead zone". Is that real enough? Do the world a favor and don't undershoot on the seriousness of this.
"Do the world a favor and don't undershoot on the seriousness of this."
Trust me, I'm not. I do try to point out inconsistencies of terminology in these news reports. Let's say you are a doctor, and you are reading a report issued by the AMA, and the terminology is wrong, and many of the presumptions presented are not plausible. Do you put any faith in that article now? That is what I am trying to get across here. A lot of what is being presented here and in the news is nothing more than conjecture, or worse.
I work in the field - I know how bad this can get. I have a real appreciation of what the operators must be going through over there. All of my co-workers are just as worried. I just wish that they would use mR vs. Sieverts though. I hate having to convert stuff.
Pray that the end comes neatly and quickly, like in revelations...
The revelation of John describes an event of far more seriousness and dread than what's being discussed here today.
The vision he recorded was at one time both exceptionally personal and truly "universal", (vs. "global") in it's scope.
I continue to frequent and lurk on ZH because I believe the foundational truth that on a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.
And what's so funny is it remains the absolute truth whether I or anybody else ever believes it.
I still chuckle about the comment about Barney Frank being safe and re-electable until he dies. But history will show in 150 years he will have been dead for far longer than he was safe.
In the past, I've spent months listening to John's revelation on CD in my commutes, averaging 3 and a half times a day, and it never gets old. Kinda like "Dark Side of the Moon" as a kid, only more powerful.
"The revelation of John describes an event of far more seriousness and dread than what's being discussed here today."
Not only much worse, but there is no "neat and quick" about it.
You listen to the Book of Revelation 3 times per day?
Why not just drop 90 hits of acid?
It'll fuck you up just as bad, and much more efficiently.
I see a lock-down ward in your future.
LOL ... fiction is not your strong suit but thanks for the effort with '... neutrons are probably going to go airborne and float around the earth ... ' bit.
BTW, I do appreciate your posts here.
Yes, the combination of heat and fission product radiation has acted in such a way that it has created a new master particle. This master particle is radioactive and networks between all other radioactive particles through a sympathetic subatomic network. At exactly 1800 hours EST TODAY all the nuclear weapons in the entire world will synchronously detonate, all the nuclear reactors in service will launch like Saturn V rockets into the sky exploding like atomic fireworks in the ionosphere.
The resulting radiation will cause mass mutations in livestock around the world to give them super brains and articulated digits (hands). There will be a mass war started by atomic cows and sheep to exterminate human kind. Cats and dogs will start sleeping together. A month later, the moon will explode. Two months after that the sun will burn out. It will make us look back on the good old days with fond memories when we all huddled in our doom bunkers from the re-entry and resultant radioactive fallout from several russian nuclear reactors into the atmosphere.... oh.. wait.. you didn't huddle in a doom bunker playing cards, eating 3 year old cans of pork and beans... Well the reactor powered sattelites sure did re-enter the atmosphere and burn up. Didn't notice huh?... yup. That's what I thought:
There were five launch, and reentry failures involving Soviet or Russian spacecraft which were carrying nuclear reactors rather than RTGs between 1973 and 1993 (see RORSAT).
Gotta love the Soviet design principles!
You say death beam, I say death ray. Let's not let semanics be a distraction.
TEPCO and the Japanese gov't can hope for the best... but they must prepare for the worst.
Anything less and they could end up on trial for crimes against humanity. This rock isn't that big. A few months of this Ce137 fountain, and it will be detectable in every corner of this puppy. All the fish, animals, bodies of water, all of it.

Neutron Beam? ....Isn't that just a radioactive rainbow?
Sure, as long as your rainbow only includes the color blue.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticality_accident#Blue_glow
From my posting yesterday, at the rate of temperature increase of .3 to 1 degree C/s, we can safely assume without proper cooling fluids, it is just a matter of time before this whole incident blows up in their faces. Even if we use the lower end we are talking about a 30 degree climb per hour, even if they are getting some seawater in these things and it stays there.
So roughly 12-24 hrs from now we should be looking at temps that will start melting the alloys of the containment vessel.
Then the SHTF....................
This site has so many ways to blow/melt down, and they are all in play. Yes, just a matter of time. The Japanese have many admirable qualities. They don't deserve this, but their leadership does.
