Radiation Reaches California

Tyler Durden's picture

After travelling in the first class confines of the Gulf/Jetstream for the past 3 days, the Fukushima radiation has finally reached California. This happens just as The Hill reports Obama has oredered a full review of all US nuclear power plants. Look for the nuclear pair trade to become all the rage in the next week.

From Reuters:

Very low concentrations of radioactive particles believed to have come from Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant have been detected on the U.S. west coast, diplomatic sources said on Friday.

The level of radiation was far too low to cause any harm to humans, they said.

One diplomat, citing information from a network of international monitoring stations, described the material as "ever so slight" and consisting of only a few particles.

"It is very low level," another source in Vienna said.

Until it isn't. Any since when are diplomats nuclear power experts?

This is quite inflammatory and false.

First off, everyone on earth has at least some minute amount of plutonium in them, most likely breathed in. This is due to unburned plutonium from atmospheric nuclear testing, RORSAT/Cosmos reactor reentry/burnup at high altitudes, and of course from Chernobyl.

In all of these events plutonium was spread through either high altitudes over the whole of the earth(RORSAT), or stratospheric altitudes from large thermonuclear weapons tests, or from small nuclear tests affecting the troposphere.

This whole deal of people freaking out about MOX is rediculous as well. If you're going to freak out, at least freak out about something you know something about.

Yup, everyone who disagrees with you is a troll. You are also great at identifying sarcasm. This must stem from your excellent understanding of science/nuclear physics in general and your lack of watching TV.

I tried to explain some gravitating facts to you. Perhaps you will go back and reread it with a bit less unwarranted self-importance. If not, that's cool. Hopefully others will read it and do some actual research on the subject before going mental.

Just a thought.  With the proclomations from official channels getting greeted with a lot of skepticism, those of you in California and the West Coast in general who are close to a university or hospital with a lab that can do radiation detection and counting (ask if they have a HPGe or NaI detector), you could set up a local program to take swipes at consistent places over the coming weeks and have your local facilities do long counts on them to provide a baseline and catch any spikes in rad levels.  This way you don't have to worry about a federal filter.

A testing program like this would need to be done consistently, but it could be done cheaply and if set up and executed properly could give some great information not just on rad levels but on the specific isotopes in the mix.  Like chemicals, not all rad materials are equally dangerous.

A local program might look something like this:

1.  Contact a hospital with a nuclear medicine department or contact a university with a radiation lab.

2.  Propose a swipe-taking program.  They'll have Health Physicists who should be able to give advice on this.

3.  Consistently take swipes from the same locations and have them counted.

4.  Publish the data for all to see.

5.  With data you can trust, you can then make a determination if these levels are problematic or whether they fall way behind other health-affecting factors like smoking, drinking, air pollution, etc.  Having a baseline of data will be crucial to making rational decisions.

Just a thought...

At the 2002 session the discussions revolved around a set of four scenarios. One entitled "Green as green can be" began with a description of an "environmental disaster" that "galvanizes public opinion" and causes the US, Europe, and Japan to pursue "aggressive environmental policies" including heavy gasoline tax, stricter pollution regs. The policy cut oil demand so significantly that by 2020 the world is using 13 mil bbl a day less.

We're so bullish we WELcome nuclear fallout. Get that? We want it.

First of all, nuclear fallout components begin to address the rare earth shrotage. And like a gift from God (or Godzilla, in this case) we are getting rare earths falling out of the sky and directly into our laps! And even the prospect of nuclear castration is bullish because US manufacturers will be first to market with steal jock straps and pelvic belts. It's a win-win-win-win-win!

I offered TEPCO the use of my geiger, since apparently they don't have one anywhere in the area, but they haven't responded.  I also offered to send some batteries to the Onagawa plant.  Apparently ALL batteries were washed away in the tsunami, but I haven't heard anything back on that either.

I wouldn't worry about it.  I'm sure if it was that bad, the USS Reagan would have measured it, and let us all know. Right?

On the off chance someone reading is actually taking this seriously. No the plant did not blow up like a nuclear bomb, if it had done the current state of the buildings would have been considered mere cosmetic damage by comparison.

In any case, if it was merely like a nuclear bomb blowing up then it would be nothing for us to worry about. We've done it plenty of times with mostly only local effect! Right?

all I know is that the explosion at no. 3 had a mushroom cloud like look to it. Big puff of debris out to the side at the base, a column of upward blasting force in the middle, and  rounded head (ok, half rounded) at the top.

is there any significance (for purposes of drawing conclusion) from the appearance of the explosion?

No, a mushroom cloud is actually characteristic of any large explosion. the GBU-43/B"MOAB" bomb (which is large, but non-nuclear) creates them. Under the right conditions even very small exposions can create a small mushroom cloud.

Fri, 03/18/2011 - 13:43 | 1072212 TheEternalTriangle
TheEternalTriangle's picture

Yeah, all you have to do to get a nuclear explosion is to bang the rocks together guys!

Well, actually given the right "rocks" that is indeed all you need to do...

Fortunately those "rocks" are not what we use in nuclear plants for obvious reasons. For "Weapons Grade" (the stuff that goes boom) you need to get to around 70-90% Uranium 235, the low enriched stuff in nuclear reactors is around 3 to 5%. The proportion of Plutonium is around 7% and even that 7% mostly consists of isotopes not prone to going boom.

There is a reason why Iran is going through all the trouble of enriching their Uranium, the stuff they got shipped to run their reactors just won't cut it for a bang.

Fri, 03/18/2011 - 13:54 | 1072229 bob_dabolina
bob_dabolina's picture

Guess what MOX is?

Weapons grade plutonium from decommisioned nuclear weapons...

Guess what else? Hydrogen combustion dont emit visible light, which is seen (fireball) in the footage of #3 blowing up

Fri, 03/18/2011 - 14:01 | 1072276 TheEternalTriangle
TheEternalTriangle's picture

Yeah, MOX fuel is to weapons grade Plutonium what Low Enriched Uranium is to weapons grade Uranium.

On the Uranium side you have you enrich it from the source (crappy grade Uranium) to Reactor Grade. On the Plutonium side you take the highly enriched stuff and mix it in with lots of crap.

I mean, concentrated Sulphuric Acid is nasty stuff and even a small drop can do some real damage to you. Add that drop to a liter of water and you could stick your hand in the bucket.

[edit] Side note, the is a BIG difference between reactor grade Plutonium and MOX fuel.

Just recently they discovered why there was such a high rate of breast cancer in Marin County (N. of SanFran) -- it was a curious because it's a wealthy area that doesn't correlate with the usual risk factors.  The occurrences were highest along the shore of the Bay and lowest along the ocean.  The bay shore of marine is shallow and silt settles out there. The radiation from pacific (and likely russian) nuke tests was coming out in precip on the Sierras , draining into the Bay and settling out in silting areas like the bay shore of Marin.

I believe that is a heavy water reactor, and sounds like the leak is from the secondary coolant loop which feeds the turbines and not from the coolant that flows through the core.  Yet the newspeak uttered by the government officials is, in these times, unfortunate.

Just for the record, the "news" is from UN operators based in Europe who have 1 monitoring station in California (Sacramento).

No information from the EPA on California or Alaska.

Your government at work.

Do not know if there is any truth to this but:

The stories of dead fish (entire bay somewhere in California) and birds falling from the sky are a precursor to earthquakes...

I won't waste ZH space by posting this as an actual post (unless people want).  But I spent countless hours yesterday reading through the scientific literature at Pub Med yesterday and found a bunch of foods, supplements and herbs which help protect against radiation:

How to Protect Yourself from Radiation

All of this worry about radiation in California from a slight leak in Japan is just nonsense.  Consider what the downwind damage was from all of those nuclear tests in Nevada.  A large number were above ground explosions with full release of all material generated.  What was the health effect in Missouri, Ohio, New York?  Were those people given protective pills or supplements?

Cancer has skyrocketed in the U.S. over the last 100 years. But it has nothing to do with radiation.  Radiation is GOOD for you!  I add some to my cheerios to pick me up, and spray paint it on my light bulbs so they glow brighter!

calling Japan's problems " a slight leak" certainly makes you the nonsense expert

Side note: Some people think the increase in cancer is genetically modified food (since it did such a bang up job on rats)

There's nothing that autocratic regimes fear more than independent thinking and decentralization.

That's why all the efforts of the self-proclaimed "elite" oligarchy will be geared towards centralization of power and dissemination of disinformation and distraction in order to disperse organized opposition.

Think about it.

Sorry if everyone has seen this already...EPA trumpets deployment of more radiation monitors to West Coast, but refuses to inform public of actual radiation data:

http://www.mercurynews.com/science/ci_17621522

"EPA officials, however, refused to answer questions or make staff members available to explain the exact location and number of monitors, or the levels of radiation, if any, being recorded at existing monitors in California. Margot Perez-Sullivan, a spokeswoman at the EPA's regional headquarters in San Francisco, said the agency's written statement would stand on its own."

So, all this nuclear waste in these spent fuel pools, are stored within a thousand feet of a reactor? Is this a good idea?

Also this other storage in the same room as the reactor?

They do this in USA? Nobody is inquiring?
