Its the last little bit of AOL thats contributing anything positive to the interwebs. Just an instant message chat program. Its legit enough that they let folks in iraq n afghanistan use it to keep in touch with the folk back home. Some cool features like direct file transfers are possible. There are other better IM programs out there but since this was basically the first to reach a wide group in the US folks stick with it. Plus you can usually link up yer buddy list with other IM programs, so you can use AIM without opening the program.

AIM is a chat program with the ability to send files back and forth. It's like yahoo chat or MSN messenger. It's GAIM under Linux but changed it's name to PIDGIN. My linux's browser doesn't link up to pidgin right gottta figure out how to link to them sooner or later.

Edit - Preferences - Applications.

Then add Pidgin as the preferred client for the type of URL that Marla posts.

Whatever it is, only freeware will be free. Corporations are not obliged to have souls. No worries, just know the basics. They are there to tear you from your money and if you are bleeding, they call counsel or public relations. No blame. I hope you find one and share the free way. I don't know of a freeware IM since you asked, but if it isn't, it's coming.

Yes, of course. Rapidshare is great but only a "one-off" when what you really require is streaming radio rather than station archiving. May I present a solution that worked for me in another venue but same medium?

I'm a member and regular volunteer at WBAI-NY and listen streaming from other locations. When they began, I was getting the stream through http://www.wbai.org via those :8000 and listen.pls route. For some reason which I have no cares the route went down. The soution is congruent with the following set of conditions. I now most reliably get the streaming radio broadcast via http://stream.wbai.org. The opening screen offers some choices from which I found a winner in using the 64kbps, MP3 Mono, or use Real Player, listen here option. The download appears as a 64kmp3.ram file and plays beautifully using the freeware Media Player Classic.

Just now Rapidshare must have finished and some techno music presented and drowned out Amy Goodman's excellent Democracy Now story du jour of how Ted Kennedy report from Delores Huerta on how Ted Kennedy helped send family doctors to help Cesar Chavez diagnose a strange debilitation which turned out to be a pinched nerve..It's 6 minutes into it and I'm thinking Jeannie Hopper dance music...you got it going on..follow the links or other breadcrumbs to the truth. If you don't get there, you'll have a good life trying.
