Radio Zero: Sick Leave
Having now returned from extended sick leave and coming to you from within her digitally wired ISOPORT™ (the CDC approved portable, negative pressure isolation enclosure in which she now resides full-time) Marla Singer is pleased to share with you:
- A small but finite risk of exposure to plague in the form of multi-drug resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae
- The lingering side effects of ongoing and massive doses of vancomycin and linezoli (including altered taste perception- brown sugar Pop Tarts™ now taste like foie gras to her, though cornflakes apparently remain as bland as ever)
- A large supply of Laudanum painstakingly hoarded from the 19th century medical facilities in which she was imprisoned housed and soon to be available for resale through the Zero Hedge Store (Act now! Supplies are limited!)
- A (hopefully) temporary loss of speech (induced by repeated intubation)
- Advanced, multi-lingual electronic speech synthesizer with integrated wheelchair (one beep for "yes," two beeps for "no")
- Several advance copies of her new book: The Complete Guide to Defrauding ObamaCare (with an introduction by Dick Fuld)
Oh, and
- 12 hours of Radio Zero (brought to you by the complete lack of circadian rhythm long hospital stays apparently induce)
Join us around... well, around now.

That which does not kill you just makes you stronger.
Club foot on.
Damn, since moving to this hosting company I haven't connected reliably once. Pleeaaasse replace cobalt blue as the mp3 download!
(or not, and just enjoy your weekend...)
Now, that's funny. LMAO.
Nice way to start the morning on the East Coast....thx
4 fingers of dark rum and a handful of the blue pills chased by a good swig of pure virgin olive oil. works every time for me.
Does the oil keep it from coming back up?
Marla,
Many of us had figured you'd been taken hostage by the evil horde and were being held in the Goldman Sachs black tower, forced to endlessly sing the 2009 GS annual report. Glad to hear you survived your imprisonment at the hands of LORD Black Fiend and other than scarred vocal cords and stubs for limbs (looks like they left you one finger to press "play") you are back.
Thank God Almighty, Marla's back!
Marla, You were so sick they gave you Vanco? That is a powerful med that is used only when, "Nothing else is working and we have a problem". Also it does not work very well the second time around. So don't get sick again. Please.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is pretty easy to treat, assuming treatment is started early. There are a plethora of antibiotics that will treat that bug successfully. The old standard was 12-20 million units of Pen GK a day. All the penicillins with or without beta lactamases should kill the bug. For those penicillin allergic, erythromycin, clindamycin, Septra can also be used. In some cases, vancomycin is used. Confusing staph and strep, and various types of staph and strep is pretty common in laymen, so if I had to guess, it might very well have been a hospital acquired MRSA (methicillin resistant staphlococcus aureas), for which vancomycin is the drug of choice, or it might have been group A strep (the bug that killed Jim Henson).
A very bright and intelligent friend of the family contracted H1N1 last year. She was 21 years old. By the time she got to the hospital she needed intubation. After being in the hospital for over a month, she developed a deep vein thrombosis, which broke off and became a pulmonary embolism, from which she died.
There is this group of nut jobs in our society that seem to think vaccinations are bad, or cause autism. Nothing could be further from the truth. Andrew Wakefield, the MD that proposed the vaccine/autism link was all about making money for himself and falsified the study data.
For anyone who has managed to read this far, here is my professional "How bad is my cough?" advice, If you coughing and have a high fever, seek treatment. If when you breathe, there are odd sounds coming from you lungs, kind of like little pops and creaks, seek treatment. If you feel like shit, seek treatment.

Check, check, and check. Thank you FGB."How bad is my cough?"
i think only cause i just started smoking weed, never had before.
medical purposes only, though.
Try cooking rather than smoking velobabe. As a strong proponent of medical mj and a chronic pain sufferer prudence and compassion require being forthright about the hazards of smoking. There are alternatives... seek them out.
cooking, i don't cook.
cooking interesting, brownies?
The confidence of hard won professionalism shines through...
Vanco is old school....but a good drug. Very safe as long as you have docs or pharmacists checking pre-dose level every once in awhile. If you have discomfort while infusing, ask the nurse to run it over 2 hrs instead. Vancomycin is a large molecule and doesn't penetrate lung tissue well - unless they acheive higher blood concentration. Target pre-level is 15-20mg/L in pneumonia (although they may use different numbers in the state-side). Get well soon.
PS: Linezolid is ~75 dollars per tablet in my country. Perhaps we could make more money trading in linezolid than equities:)
Get well soon, Marla!!!
Radio Zero on a Saturday morning? Life is good. Hope you get better soon Marla!
Extensive exposure to sunlight might contribute to improve your situation:

the evil corporate entity Dyn-corp has blocked http://72.13.86.66:8000/listen.pls
they have been recently bought out by eviler Cerebus capital management and the fetid stench of fear wafts thru the halls of the admin building at camp Hicks.....
Marla,
God speed, hope you get better quickly. About three years ago I got strep throat, which spread to my lungs and gave me pneumonia. I lost 30 lbs, felt like shit for a month, was in bed most of the time. Anyways, the doc gave me some antibiotic and told me me "if this doesn't work, I am hospitalizing you". It worked, and I slowly regained my strength.
Now I take mega does of vitamin D all year long (almost 20,000 IUs in the form of D drops). This is a high dose (I recommend 3,000 to 5,000 IUs for normal people) but I also do it to combat my MS. Ever since I increased my vitamin D, I never get sick. Didn't even bother doing my H1N1 shot. Nada.
Get well soon...health is the only thing that matters.
leo, just lay out in the sun, totally naked for an hour every day.
that's what i have done my whole life, that is the purest form of vit D,
never been sick, ever.
Chicken soup!

Get well; and please consider ayurvedic immune system enhancers. Even as a regular flyer and trainer, exposed to every nasty virus and microbe, my health has become spectacular.
Oh, and since it's May Day, can you please play the Internationale?

Chain Smoking, Dating Strange Men and a Skanky Life Style May Lead To:
" plague in the form of multi-drug resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae...massive doses of vancomycin and linezoli... A large supply of Laudanum painstakingly hoarded from the 19th century medical facilities in which she was imprisoned house..."
So let me get this straight...
A. You were exposed to an antibiotic resistant strain of streptococcus pneumonia... or
B. You had a severe respiratory infection and then were exposed to antibiotic resistant strains of streptococcus at the gulag medical facility you sought treatment at...
Since infection control is the #1 plague of hospitals...
Gee, it is too bad that the US pharma industry continually chases after high profit, patentable antibiotics chasing nature's bacterial ability to evolve and immunize itself from said high profit products...
Instead of the low cost, Soviet, now Russian method of medical infection control through the use of targeted bacterial macrophage regimens... which can be used in everything from operating rooms to dairy production facilities to food bacterial control... I'm running a stat analysis on the later as we speak...
But there is no profit in prevention... hence... your antibiotic resistant pneumonia.
Just sayin'...
Hope you feel better and are getting your skull banged into the headboard real soon.
Love PI.
PS: There is not much active food value in a pop tart. So don't worry about bacterial food poisoning... Michael Pollan has a 3 year old twinkie in his office still in its original state...
PSS: I was just complaining to you in a comment the other day:
How come most readers were getting "Cougar" porn pop up ads and I was getting "Currency Trading for Dummies" and "Singles over 40" ????
I like Cougar porn too, you know...
On a long enough timeline...
Once again, Chumba finds the carotid artery and immediately pinches it off, assuring all of us that fun and laughter will prevail once we reach the white light at the end of the tunnel.
The vitamin D advice is good advice.
Get better kiddo. This body is your chariot. We talk gold, stocks, bonds, and money, but your body is all you have.
Pardon my dear MsCreant, but I would argue that you, Marla and many others bring much more to life and community than your bodies. (Yes, I do appreciate your whole person context my friend) Am I reducing this to semantics? It never ceases to amaze me how we punish our own selves in pursuit of our engagement as some sort of scouting badge or red badge of courage. Once more we are reminded that pace and patience are essential when engaged in sustained operations. peace lilsis.
The mind and soul are housed by the body. It is all we really have. Yours causes you fits, and I know you are grateful to have it, too. There is more life and partying left in you, yes? Need your chariot to contain your joy, sadness, pain, whatever life brings.
It may indeed be semantics.
Every meal is a banquet, each thread a parade. Thank you for yours.
Get well Marla. I am putting on my tin hat and will chant some Karmatic love in your direction.

P.S. Vitamin D works especially well for fair-skinned people in Northern climates. And carefully check the true country of origin because powdered milk and melamine counteracts the benefits of Vitamin D.
Marla, get out of that mechanical device and give it back to Captain Pike...!
He looks like a mess without it.
Also we need Capitain Pike to be mobile, and crack the whip on Captain Kirk... Kirk's got 10 years of TV series ahead of him.
The opportunity to comment positively on Radio Zero is what finally prompted me to overcome my fear and register after lurking almost from the beginning.
Of all the things that will not cure a cold, whiskey seems to be the most popular.
Thankz for the jamz!!
Marla feel better. So glad you are still around.
I had to put down my 9 year old english bulldog yesterday. It was NO fun.
I'm sorry for your loss spekulatn. I am stupid in love with my cat, cried like hell when he was missing 23 hours, I just can't imagine.
I hope you have let yourself cry. My husband's cat of 10 years was killed by a stray dog a year ago. He had to take off work (self employed) to just let himself do what he needed to do to grieve. Hope you can do the same.
A kitten from a rescue place turned out to be wonderful for us. He chose us, stepped on to my husband's shoulder, it was all over.
Thank you MsCreant. I very much appreciate your kind thoughts.
It has been more difficult than I imagined. Winston has brought up emotions I no longer thought I owned. I can't stop thinking about his drooling, farting ass ;) Those that own a bulldog can most likely relate.
Thanks again for the kind reply.
imagine a husband.
I am not brave enough to do that, the pain is too much. Tells me how lucky I am. Thanks for that velolicious. Hope you are well.
Those three words write a book about you.
My God Marla, Why are we just now hearing about this!! We all should get together for a kick the crap out of Tyler party...
As you can tell, you are loved around here, Tyler - not so much... (LOL) Please get well.
J.B. Books
Rumor has it that the GS trading floor was massively short the Marla-on-maternity-leave contract, and then got one of their crack whores to cough on your chinese food takeout. Glad to see you've recovered, time to take them down another notch!
Marla, you look terrible. Please say something.
"beep-beep".
Marla. Wow! You've been there and back. Lots of good thoughts heading your way.
Be well. Be very well.
Just like Trial of the Pyx - forced out of the shadows
by a need to express warm, good feelings for Marla.
All the best, and missed you much.
Oh, WOW . . . So THAT'S where you've been! Feel better soon, maybe we can start a Bionic Blogger webcircle once we're done wasting our time at the docs!
