WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 26, 2011 – The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported steady results in weekly rail traffic with U.S. railroads originating 295,148 carloads for the week ending May 21, 2011, up 2.3 percent compared with the same week last year. Intermodal volume for the week totaled 234,235 trailers and containers, up 8.7 percent compared with the same week in 2010.

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Worldwide retail sales of Caterpillar Inc.'s (CAT) construction machinery surged 66% in the three months to the end of April, as the company's robust sales activity showed no signs of weakening, according to dealer sales figures released Thursday.
April was the 12th straight rolling three-month period of sales expansion for the Peoria, Ill., company as it rebounds from a steep decline in sales in 2009. During the March period, overall machinery sales increased 61% from a year earlier, and for the February period increased 59%.

Caterpillar Inc. believes the American economy isn't far from taking off again but needs a better idea of where government policy is headed in key areas such as taxes, Chief Financial Officer Edward Rapp said Thursday.
The company forecasts that the U.S. economy will grow by about 3 percent in 2012, Rapp said before a speech at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. He said growth of 3.5 percent to 4 percent should kick off demand for new heavy machinery like the company's construction equipment.
"There's a pent-up demand waiting to happen, but it's going to take more robust growth in the U.S. to make that happen," Rapp said.
