The Revolt Spreads to America

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

Yesterday, thousands of Wisconsin public workers protested the state's plan to cut benefits:

As USA Today notes:

House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan compared the protests in his home state of Wisconsin over Gov. Scott Walker's budget plan to the pro-democracy movement in Egypt.

Ryan, a Republican from Janesville, made his comments on MSNBC's Morning Joe program. In the Wisconsin state capital, teachers and labor union supporters swarmed the Senate chambers today to protest a bill that would strip most public employees of nearly all their collective bargaining rights.

"It's like Cairo's moved to Madison these days," Ryan said on MSNBC. "All of this demonstration ... it's fine. People should be able to express their way."

Mother Jones points out:

For the second straight day, demonstrators have been pouring into the streets of Madison, Wisconsin to protest Republican Governor Scott Walker's anti-union plan to address the state's $137 million budget shortfall, prompting comparisons (and denounciations of these comparisons) to the uprising in Egypt. Walker's proposal would limit the collective bargaining power of many state and local employees, and roughly doubles their health care premiums. It would also give public union members the right not to pay their dues, deflating the groups' coffers. Experts expect that Walker's provisions will be voted into law by the end of the week by the state assembly and senate—both of which are controlled by Republicans.

In response, Madison public school teachers have called in sick for a second straight day. And teachers in over a dozen other school districts have followed suit. Meanwhile, union leaders are picketing the capitol, planning vigils and setting up phone banks to try to block Walker's effort.

***

Protestors say that sounds a little…Mubaraky. They're carrying signs saying things like "Mubarak-check. Walker—?" and "Hosni Walker, Elected Dictator." And local liberal pundits are feeding the flames of anti-MubWalkerism. Liberal columnist Pat Schneider wrote that "[t]he success of a grass-roots uprising in Egypt in toppling strongman Hosni Mubarak was a source of inspiration for many of those who brainstormed Tuesday in Madison about resistance to attacks on US workers in several states." Meanwhile, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) told CNN "it's like Cairo's moved to Madison these days…[h]e's basically saying I want you public workers to pay half of what our private sector counterparts are, and he's getting riots."

AOL News reports:

Walker has upped the ante by threatening to bring in the National Guard if public workers decide to walk off the job or if their protests disrupt services around the state.

Labor activists responded by saying that Walker could ignite a "class war."

And now many are comparing Walker to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who tried to cling to power while protests roiled his country.

Dylan Ratigan notes that a large proportion of Wisconsin public employees' pension funds go to Wall Street:

The average Wisconsin state employee gets $24,500 a year. That’s not a very big pension. The state pension plan, 15% of the money going into it each year is being paid out to Wall Street to manage the money. That’s a really huge high percentage to pay out to Wall Street to manage the money.

And the Governor has ordered the Wisconsin state police to arrest all of the Democratic State Senators and return them to the Capital, but the Senate Democrats have fled the state.

Conservative writers like Mish and Karl Denninger slam the protesters (they're anti-union).

Indeed, the Democratic National Committee is apparently helping to organize the protests.

But Max Keiser writes:

It’s foolish to say these protests are about ‘labor’ or ‘unions.’ They’re about people getting their wealth stolen by banks. And whether it’s Cairo or Ohio, it’s the same banks. We are witnessing a Global Insurrection Against Banker Occupation.

Another poster writes:

The one good thing that has come out of this is simply the fact that, for right or for wrong, people are getting off their [back sides] and doing something about something.

And in related "Mubaraky" news, Ray McGovern - a 27-year CIA veteran, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates and personally delivered intelligence briefings to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, their Vice Presidents, Secretaries of State, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and many other senior government officials - was bloodied, bruised and beaten for peacefully protesting a speech by Hillary Clinton (Clinton's speech was about the importance of protecting free speech):

McGovern Bloodied and Arrested at Clinton Speech mcgovernassaulted

As Raw Story points out:

Former CIA agent Ray McGovern, an outspoken critic of US foreign policy, stood silently in the auditorium's center aisle, and turned his back on Clinton.

For his symbolic and otherwise non-disruptive protest, he was quickly accosted by security agents. As they struggled to pull him out of the room, a CNN news camera caught the tail end of the ordeal.

"SO THIS IS AMERICA?!? This is America? Who are you?" the 71-year-old McGovern shouted as he was hauled away.

***

McGovern was being represented by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF).

"It is the ultimate definition of lip service that Secretary of State Clinton would be trumpeting the U.S. government's supposed concerns for free speech rights and this man would be simultaneously brutalized and arrested for engaging in a peaceful act of dissent at her speech," a spokeswoman for the group said in a published statement. [The group also noted that McGovern was "left bleeding in jail".]

US officials came under similar rhetorical fire in December, when they announced plans to host "World Press Freedom Day." The announcement was made on the same day that Sen. Joesph Lieberman (I-CT) declared that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be prosecuted for espionage over his role in the release of US diplomatic cables.

"When people die because we have hypocrites at the top of our government, that compels me to make a statement in whatever way I can," McGovern later told Rob Kall, who posted the remarks to Op Ed News. "It was not the theme of her speech that I was protesting. It was her war policies and support of Mubarak."

And see this and this.

The public was heard, they elected Walker.

Man, nmewn, you're taking a strangely narrow view of things here.  You elect a guy and he becomes dictator, is that it?  As long as he was sent in on the votes of, what, 28% of the adult population?

What are you talking about?  Busting the unions was not a campaign plank.  It came out of nowhere once he was elected.  Even those people who voted had no chance to weigh in on that issue before electing him.

He never gave this matter a public hearing.  Individuals call that Due Process.  For the body politic, I believe that would be called real democracy.

Bob,

"Man, nmewn, you're taking a strangely narrow view of things here.  You elect a guy and he becomes dictator, is that it?"

If it works like everywhere else (it's Wisconsin, so who knows...LOL) the bill, once passed through the legislature, goes to Walker, the governor, for his signature...that is representative democracy because the legislators were voted in by the people as well.

As you know, a dictator does not abide a popular vote.

The problem is the growth of the public sector which needs a tax base to support it. The taxes are just not there to support it. It's this way state after state. Not just Wisconsin.

I've been doing a little digging since we first started discussing this...as the thread seems to be petering out, it won't hog the thread to do what I'm about to do.

While the MSM is only giving this issue 2 min here and 3 min there attention, don't be mislead, This could be historic if it passes. Even staunch conservatives are flipping out on this one. This ranks right up there with Regan's move on Air-traffic controllers in my opinion.

Even if you don't support or HATE unions you have to recognize the implications and attack on the middle class that is happening. Public pay and fringe benefits are a huge "hot-button", and get the political play, then there is that slippery slope that is currently getting greased.

And how ironic, First we get the Citizens United ruling and now this. It is not parisan, it is Big Corporations vs everyone else.

For a little background and on Wisconsin labor history:

Many firsts

Wisconsin was the first state to let public employees organize and bargain collectively, Dresang said. It was also first to grant workers compensation and unemployment compensation.

Labor unions in Wisconsin started as early as 1865, when the Molders Union Local 125 was formed in Milwaukee. Worker strikes date back even further, to a ship carpenters walkout in Milwaukee in 1848.

But in the first five days of May 1886, a strike led to Wisconsin’s worst labor violence. As part of a nationwide push for an eight-hour work day, Milwaukee workers shut down most of the city’s factories. As several thousand marched toward Bay View Rolling Mills, Milwaukee’s largest employer at the time, the Wisconsin State Militia opened fire, killing seven people. It was the day after the riot in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, where eight police officers and an unknown number of civilians died.

Among other milestones:

• In 1893, the state Federation of Labor, which later became the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, was founded.

• In 1911, Wisconsin adopted the first workers compensation law in the U.S.

• In 1932, Wisconsin was the first state with an unemployment compensation law.

What an idiotic argument and you get +100 for that tripe??? With overtime a newby fireman gets $100k+ plus full bennies and 3%/year toward retirement; after 30 years afireman gets 90% salary plus bennies to in "retirement". More established firemen get like $125k+ bennies.  So do the math MENSA. Firemen are getting the equivalent of $200k a year for 30 years (assuming they live 30 years after retirement), plus full medical bennies for 60 years. Compare that to a typical private sector employee. Figure 2,5 firement to fill in a postion (2+ days on and 5 off per week) and that is ALOT of pay.

And pleeeze, no "HERO" chants - okey?  The firemen in my city are measuring to make sure palm trees do not hang into a 13' clear space required in driveways. They are trying to write tickets for overgrown weeds and tree trimming to underpin their salaries as firefighters. Just like the asshat CHP sneaking around writing speedning tix - that money would be better spent on road service.  I have to laugh that only 5% of CHP applicants make the grade - it must be the drug testing?

MENSA, that's funny!  I believe the article clearly states that the average retirement income is around $24k.

I don't buy the HERO speil either.  It seems, from what I hear, that firemen are overpaid everywhere.  And union rules certainly need to be changed to eliminate "income inflating" practices by people approaching retirement.  Lots of things can use reform.

I know.  I worked as a contractual worker with state employees for several years.  I'm well aware of the problems.

So let's reform as appropriate under any conditions.  But busting the unions outright is pure bullshit. And expecting them to eat the harvest of Wall Street criminals' unpunished excesses--not to mention the private sector's abuses of working people over the past 25 years--is also bullshit, no matter how many other people are perfectly willing to patriotically "sacrifice" for them.

There are unions, and then there are public sector unions.  Genuine labor-based collective bargaining is on the wane, but will return as class warfare escalates.  Public sector union employees, OTOH, should all be fired.  Let's see what they do about it.  They're pussies and will sit home and whine.

What about the small business owner.

...no union

...no health care (except what they pay for out of pocket)

...no pension (except what they might or might not have been able to shelter over the years)

...no paycheck if business dries up, but still must find ways to give employees their checks if the doors are to stay open (but plenty of taxes & rising expenses)

...has his/her own money invested, i.e. skin in the game --- very often eveything.

...can't even collect unemployment, but pays for the employee's unemployment insurance each and every year.

...isn't even counted in freakin' statistics

My customer base is Main Street America.  I know what is happening to small businesses, and is is like some kind of silent cancer settling over the land.

We little entrepreneurs are invisible in this game, but will be sorely misssed in the long run,  Right now, however, no one even sees us, let alone gives a shit.

About thirty five seconds. I have no simpathy for these people at all. The basic problem with every state budget is the same, hugely bloated public employee payrolls and pie in the sky pension and health plans. The party's over people. All the free gravy and biscuits been eaten up. Time to get real. If Wisconsin doesn't have a critical budget shortage this year, good; that's a good time to start fixin what's shorely brocken; because nothing is going to get any better next year.

And in related "Mubaraky" news, Ray McGovern - a 27-year CIA veteran......was bloodied, bruised and beaten for peacefully protesting a speech by Hillary Clinton (Clinton's speech was about the importance of protecting free speech):

Well GW, surely you must understand that there's "free speech" and then there's the concept of "free speech". In the first case you simply speak your mind. In the second case, you participate in the illusion that since everyone has the right to free speech, there's no need to actually exercise that "right", which BTW has been turned into a privilege. Those muscles grow weak if they aren't exercised.

I live in a "right to carry" state, which means I have the right to carry my firearm out in the open with certain restrictions such as not in certain public places, usually government buildings etc. This is the concept at least. But when I started to exercise my "right" several years ago you can't imagine the uproar I created. I was even told by a judge (who then dismissed all charges) that while it was my right, nowadays I shouldn't exercise it because it would "upset" too many people. After all, this isn't the wild wild west....right?

I then spent the night in jail for contempt of court when I asked the judge when it would be a good time to exercise my "rights". I enjoyed doing my time. :>)

Not to quibble, but I think you mean "open" carry. I have the right to carry in my state, but I have to have a license and it has to be concealed.

And that was an excellent question to the apparently pompous ass of a judge.

Not the first nor last time I will spend time in jail over my "rights".

I agree that it is "open" carry and I should have used it correctly in this case. But I have a habit of saying "right to carry" when talking to people because I'm trying to educate people as to the difference between a "right" and a "privilege" and I'm talking to people who live in my state. Most people in my state are surprised anyone can own and carry (out in the open) a firearm. They only know about concealed carry, not "open" so open means little to nothing.

If I say "right" to carry, the conversation is usually happening at the time I'm actually walking the street with my sidearm on and in the open or when not, the conversation is already about the "right" to own and wear a firearm in public. So it is already known that it is out in the open. BTW it's amazing how many people in my state think you need a "license" to open carry. When they say that it leads into a discuss about rights and privileges. In my state, you don't have a right to drive your car, you have a privilege extended by the state that can be revoked by the state. But you have the right to open carry.

Let me see...

On one hand we have: People on the verge of starvation due to explosive food and energy prices protesting to overthrow a repressive dictatorial regime that has corrupted the political system in order to remain in power for 30 years while it plundered the country's finances and kept the vast majority of the population in abject poverty.

On the other hand we have: Fully-employed, well-fed civil servants (masters?) feeding at the government trough, fraudulently calling in sick (and getting paid for being absent) so they can protest the government's proposal to reduce their already overly-generous benefits packages.

Yep, the similarity is scary...

The lefties applauding this "protest" should be ashamed of themselves.  Since when was a two tiered society determined by public union membership what you really wanted?  Most of the people taxed to pay for these benefits are not making as much as these public employees and have nowhere near the job security.

Don't oversell this.  This isn't Egypt.

This is good ol'class warfare American style...and the Republican Govenor is losing.

Live blogging indicates State Troopers have refused to go after Senate Dems who fled the Capitol to stall the Senate vote on the governor's bill which would kill collective bargaining.

Madison cops appear to be marching with protestors.

And what's behind this is Un-fucking-believable...

The asshole Governor manufactured a budget crisis by giving tax cuts to corps.

Yep, class warfare is right.  Rep. Scott Walker just manufactured a false flag operation.

The shit has really hit the fan with this---

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/02/wisconsin-gov-walker-ginned-up-budget-shortfall-to-undercut-worker-rights.php

Wisconsin's new Republican governor has framed his assault on public worker's collective bargaining rights as a needed measure of fiscal austerity during tough times.

The reality is radically different. Unlike true austerity measures -- service rollbacks, furloughs, and other temporary measures that cause pain but save money -- rolling back worker's bargaining rights by itself saves almost nothing on its own. But Walker's doing it anyhow, to knock down a barrier and allow him to cut state employee benefits immediately.

Furthermore, this broadside comes less than a month after the state's fiscal bureau -- the Wisconsin equivalent of the Congressional Budget Office -- concluded that Wisconsin isn't even in need of austerity measures, and could conclude the fiscal year with a surplus. In fact, they say that the current budget shortfall is a direct result of tax cut policies Walker enacted in his first days in office.

"Walker was not forced into a budget repair bill by circumstances beyond he control," says Jack Norman, research director at the Institute for Wisconsin Future -- a public interest think tank. "He wanted a budget repair bill and forced it by pushing through tax cuts... so he could rush through these other changes."

"The state of Wisconsin has not reached the point at which austerity measures are needed," Norman adds.

In a Wednesday op-ed, the Capitol Times of Madison picked up on this theme.

In its Jan. 31 memo to legislators on the condition of the state's budget, the Fiscal Bureau determined that the state will end the year with a balance of $121.4 million.

To the extent that there is an imbalance -- Walker claims there is a $137 million deficit -- it is not because of a drop in revenues or increases in the cost of state employee contracts, benefits or pensions. It is because Walker and his allies pushed through $140 million in new spending for special-interest groups in January.

The state pension fund has an expense ratio of .325%, managing 69 billion in assets.  As a comp, any retard with $3K can get his retirement managed by Vanguard for .19%.  The state pays $232 million a year to run the fund, of which, $194 million is in external fees to such "friends of ZH" (heavy sarc) as Morgan Stanley, Old Mutual, AXA, etc.  For this, the portfolio has done about as well as the S&P 500 over the last 10 years.

Main point, there are a bunch of corporate giveaways to companies that literally probably don't exist without government pork barrel spending, which is the fault of both parties, as both parties take pork (via campaign contributions) to make pork (via contracts).

You clots that pretend to be for the middle class have no idea of what the issues are here in Wisconsin.

If I didn't have such heavy manufacturing equipment I would have left this tax hell hole long ago. i sealed my fate by not leaving.

Read what the real issues are on affordability of gombit union slags. I will say that mey local garbage collectors do work fairly hard from what I have seen, but the rest are vastly overpaid and their benefit packages dwarf anything in the private sector. look at the increase in gombit employee populations versus the mundanes. The goo force has increased four times more than the general population in the past forty years.

Yes, I am pissed that my grade school chum retired at 55 along with his wife. They had the special extra duties jobs that grossly inflated their pensions in the last year of employment.

Look at the implied capital base that is needed to pay these pensions. They have no capital equipment to support themselves so they just loot the fecks that did save and invest. The savers are getting killed on taxes to support the pensions of these selfless saints.

Feckit, I will quit if this looting by goo isn;t stopped... Oh, and BTW, I have been on the banksters far longer than nearly any of you have had a clue on what was going down, so don't bother with your preaching.
