Rumor Gadaffi Making Preparations To Leave Libya Sends Oil Lower

Tyler Durden's picture

From the BBC: "Libyan sources have told the pan-Arab newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat that Col Gaddafi has turned to the rebel Transitional National Council to secure his departure from the country in return for guaranteeing his and his family's safety. He sent a negotiator on his behalf to Benghazi and made handing over power before Libya's parliament, the General People's Congress, his condition, the sources said." If confirmed, look for oil to drop substantially. However, since this is almost certainly the latest totally bullshit rumor in a long string of market manipulation attempts, any drop in commodities should likely be BTFDed with a vengeance.

MM, this quote from Duneis favourite of mine, kind of explains things:

All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted.

This is how dictators end up in holes with bed head.

Kaddafi may not have any options in the nicer parts of the world, but he has some friends in various African countries, basically in a line south from Libya.  He could move to one of those, live in a nice mansion, set up his spawn as billionaires and likely die of natural causes without too much trouble.  I tend to think Oh Regional Indian's comments are right.

Mon, 03/07/2011 - 12:08 | 1026216 MachoMan
MachoMan's picture

His comments are right, but they're not mutually exclusive with what we're talking about...  Kaddafi Duck moving to another country is simply kicking the can down the road at this point...  either he goes to a place that kills him and takes his money...  or he goes to a place that will likely be overtaken by its own inhabitants, much like the MENA turmoil that took out Libya.  Regardless, each time he seeks to transfer his wealth, he'll pay a handsome transfer tax...  even to "friends".  My guess is this is why he wants to stay...  he is out of viable options.  People want his head and he can either do their job for them or he can delay the inevitable through additional conflict.  His choice.

I still think it would be awesome if he goes missing and a few months from now they find him in a small bunker knee deep in cocaine and hookers and with nick nolte dwi/saddam wild hair.  I mean, if I knew I only had a little while to live, I wouldn't blame him...

The false patriotism followers crying foul whenever they read something they don't want to read and then they complain to Tyler and ask him to quit allowing GW the right to post around here, etc.  It is this false pardigm of false patriotism , gone bad.  Whenever one talks about the subject of torture it brings them out in force because they don't want to talk about it nor do they want to examine it in any detail because they also probably are soldier worshipers, and if one has a problem with this thing we are doing, called torture, then they also , would have a problem with my friends and/or my sons who are fighting for my rights to freedom and liberty, never mind the fact that these wars are fought based upon lies and that these men and women are doing things that are wrong. Therein lies the problem and in this discussion it causes hate and discontent among those who are infected with this thing called false patriotism. It makes their ears itch and makes them feel unconfortable having to face something like this because if the whole war is a lie and it is, and if our soldiers are doing things that are wrong , and they are, then it is better to attack the writer who ask these salient questions than to face reality, a reality that is as ugly as real truth is, a reality that can and does cause pain.

It was quite nice of Col. Qaddafi to leak this information to the world half an hour before the U.S stock markets opened.   He is such a considerate fella!

The markets absorb the surge in oil prices... and the markets surge on any pullback on highly inflated oil prices.  What an efficient system the banksters have rigged...

Qaddafi Escalates War Against Rebels as Libya Fight Deepens (3)

March 7 (Bloomberg) -- Libyan troops loyal to Muammar Qaddafi used artillery and helicopter gunships to block the rebels’ advance west from the oil hub of Ras Lanuf toward the leader’s hometown of Sirte."

Yep, world thinks Gadaffi is surrendering, Gadaffi seems to be unaware of it while his forces continue to kick rebel ass. The news of Gadaffis demise was somewhat over exagerated.

They want Q-daffy there so they can justify cutting the country in 2.  Of course you have to bomb the oil infrastructure first so you can make loans to replace everything first.  Things won't be serious until planes start falling from the sky.

Maybe they will call in Mr. CFR Jr. - George Clooney, to help negotiation the division of Libya like that of Sudan between the Arab north and the African/Christian-undeveloped oil south.

I am surprised the rumors of the Iranian army cut-off in South Libya haven't made the news.  Team Obomba could have seized the day and put Libya into the Axis of Evil, but alas without a green light from his Chicago handlers all Obama can do is have another drink.  Considering how our Egyptian junta is losing control to the emerging MB, there is little chance G-daffy is going anywhere soon.  With 3 brigades - call it 15,000 troops plus all the khat chewing African mercs you can hire for free rapes and pillages only a close range double tap head-shot with a small caliber pistol is going to end Q-daffy's rule.  And then who will be in control?  His sons?  Some tribes? MI6?

Where a 'third stage' Guild Navigator to tell you what to do?

The Spice must flow.

Let Europe deal with Libya, Italy tells US

http://gulftoday.ae/portal/27462f25-1e03-42d5-a38a-0ff1bf211f9d.aspx

Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni has called on the United States to restrain itself over Libya and leave Europe to deal with the crisis, which he said risked seeing a rise in extremism, Italian media reported on Sunday.

“We have to make sure Libya does not become the new Afghanistan, but the Americans would do well to calm down,” Roberto Maroni said on Saturday at a meeting of the anti-immigration Northern League party, of which he is a member. “We are here, Europe is here, and it’s best that we take care of things.”

Maroni denied being alarmist and said it was necessary to avoid a mass flight of refugees from Libya and surrounding countries towards Europe.

“The collapse of these countries could give birth to regimes supported by Islamic fundamentalism, with the risk of infiltration by Al Qaeda,” he said.

While US President Barack Obama has argued his country must not become a player in the Libyan revolt, to avoid backlash in a region that reviles the US invasion of Iraq and is marked by colonialism, he has not ruled out military action.

Northern League chief Umberto Bossi said military action on the part of the West would aggravate the problem of refugees fleeing the region for Italy.

“There should be no bombardments, otherwise they’ll just come here,” he said.

He will likely leave in front of a heavily reinforced rifle company of U.S. Marines, if at all. This is still spring training. The war season hasn't started yet. The Arab goal is to finally erase the Sykes - Picot administration districts commonly called by their country names. Trouble for London, Basel, Wall Street and its leisure service, the U.S. Government.

Qaddafi is done in military terms.  It is just over 1,000 miles from Tripoli to the Egyptian border following the coast road.  Do any of you realize what is involved in merely moving a sustainable, effective fighting force such a distance, never mind doing so while also engaging in combat and trying to defend an enormously long and vulnerable supply line?  A fighting force that is mostly mercenary and will run at the first sign of real resistance?  Finally add another wild-card, the rebels getting arms and aid from foreign nations, and steadily improving the cohesion and fighting power of their units.

Qaddafi must find a nation that will have him and figure out some way to preserve as much of his ill-gotten wealth as possible from sequestration.  A few billion dollars go a long way in Zimbabwe.

"From the BBC"? you are kidding, aren't you? "BBC NEWS 24" or rather it should be known as "BBC Rumour, Conjecture, Hearsay and Bullshit 24".  I'm old enough to remember when the BBC reported verifiable facts as news, not the bollocks they present as news nowadays.  it's not news - it's a lifestyle option. The events in the middle east the last couple of months are a superb example of this. They're as bad as CNBC and Bloomberg in this respect.

The BBC used to actually be respectable. Now, it's gone totally corporate.

Their business coverage really is as bad as CNBC and all the rest of it.

They had a half decent consumerist business show on BBC2 at midday and then during the beginnings of the great crash they banished their core presenters to early morning radio home service land replacing them with the most absurd blue peter type presenters , no that is doing blue peter a disservice - they were more teletubby like in their analysis.
