Satellite Images Of Volcanic Cloud Causing "Worst In Living Memory" European Aerospace Restrictions

Tyler Durden's picture

Here are some images of the volcanic cloud which is causing airspace shutdowns over most of Europe.

More from Reuters:

A huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano turned the skies of northern Europe into a no-fly zone on Thursday, stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers.

The European air safety organization said the disruption, the biggest seen in the region, could last another two days and a leading volcano expert said the ash could present intermittent problems to air traffic for six months if the eruption continued.

Even if the disruption is short lived, the financial impact on airlines is likely to be significant, a consultant said. [all the more reason to push the transports to all 18 months highs]

The volcano began erupting on Wednesday for the second time in a month from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. It hurled a plume of ash six to 11 kilometers (3.8 to 7 miles) into the atmosphere, and this spread south east overnight.

Impact on airtraffic is already widespread:

Britain barred flights in its air space, except in emergencies, until at least 0600 GMT on Friday, with a flight returning soldiers from Afghanistan having to be held in Cyprus.

It was the first time "within living memory" that a natural disaster had caused such a halt, a spokeswoman for Britain's National Air Traffic Service (NATS) said. Even after the September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, Britain did not close its air space, she said.

Northern French airports were due to be shut in stages on Thursday evening, with Paris airports to shut by 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) at the latest, authorities there said.

Brussels, Amsterdam and Geneva airports said they had canceled a large number of flights and Eurocontrol spokesman Brian Flynn said on Thursday afternoon the problem could persist for a further 48 hours.

So how is this going to be used to explain bad employment numbers in the US?

"The BLS reported today an unexpected rise in unemployment in April due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland, in mid April.  There is a direct correlation between the unexpected drop in European airline traffic and tourism in the United States, as such increases typically cause increases in service industry full time and seasonal employment.  We expect that this volcanic eruption and Easter, both acts of God, to have ongoing and detrimental effects on the US employment outlook."

Dude,

If you don't already work for the Ministry of Information, then you definitely have a career option to go there!  After all, we KNOW government is a sector of the economy that is growing, and will likely continue to grow, for years to come!

Meanwhile in the Midwest:

What is being said to be a meteor was seen about 10:04 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses describe the event as a giant ball of light with a trailing tail which exploded and lit up the sky as if it was daylight for several seconds...chunks of the meteor hit the ground in southwest Wisconsin where nine fires were reported about the same time within a one-mile radius.

Easy, if the ash stays around long enough, it will cause cooling temp's...which will morph into slower comsuming, which morphs into more job loss.........every thing can be used to explain away lunatic economics of Nero & the fair share marxist's

This is all Bush's fault.  The sheer weight of the military machine that he sent, and still remains, in the Middle East has caused a substantial deflection in the mid-Asian continental plate, and with this deflection a redirection of the underlying magma chamber toward the Iceland rift; and resultant volcanic eruption.

Not bad.  I think the current bankers would rather try this.  "This is a direct result of Iceland not paying off the UK and Netherlands!  This is a direct attack on Europe and an act of terror by Iceland!  We must invade and stop these economic and ecological terrorists!"  It is election time in the UK after all, Brown could use a looting war to polish his image.

This volcano known as Eyjafjalla has a sister Katla which is known for more explosive eruptions. Eyjafjalla has erupted 3 times in the last thousand years and each time has triggered an eruption of Katla. When Katla went off in 1755 it caused a winter so severe in the US that the Mississippi River froze as far south as New Orleans.

"The effects of the eruption were felt worldwide. It ejected roughly 10 billion metric tonnes (10 cubic kilometres) of magma, and 20 million tons of SO2, bringing vast quantities of minerals and metals to the surface environment. It injected large amounts of aerosols into the stratosphere—more than any eruption since that of Krakatoa in 1883. Over the following months, the aerosols formed a global layer of sulfuric acid haze. Global temperatures dropped by about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F), and ozone depletion temporarily increased substantially."

BTW the painting "the scream" by Munch was painted right after the eruption of Krakatoa and hence the rich sunset in the background.

1783-86: Two succesive severe winters. The Thames froze completely in both, almost continuous frost lasted from early to late winter. Snow remained for as long as 4 months. Attributed to an Icelandic volcanic eruption, although details regarding this are slim. Heavy snow also fell early on in both years, with snow falling as early as October. 1784 was a cold year generally. Sleet was recorded near the coast of the Moray Firth in August! Heavy snow fell in the South in October. The year was ranked in the top 10 coldest years recorded in the CET series. 1785 was very dry and cold, with again early snow in October. 1786 had a very dry summer, and was persistantly cold from September to November.

I read that report and while there's quite a bit in it regarding alternative energy sources, there's precious little in there about CO2 itself.

If you're going to be snooty and arrogant to people who dare doubt your God-given wisdom, you might want to ensure that the lengthy literature to which you point them actually makes your case.

Anyway:

Care to 'splain to me how carbon dioxide specifically can be such an overwhelming danger to humanity when it's a trace atmospheric gas with exceedingly weak greenhouse properties, and when its atmospheric concentration hasn't actually changed in the last 150 years  ...?
